Hi Master and TW!
I wanted to know what is the first step for building my own ROM from scratch? Do you have any literature about Linux OS and kernel that you have learned from in order to get where you are today? I'm willing to take the time to learn this. I have basic knowledge about Linux and and computer hardware (I'm a computer engineering student).
Thanks

well you know I think, that linux os on the PDA is only for enthusiasts and people, who know how to use it, how to configure it, and what is an advantage of it. if you are standard user, and have no linux administrative skills, then I cannot recommend this for you. even though it is possible to run linux on some devices. it is nice POC (proof of concept), that it is possible to run linux on such devices, but it is not usable by standard users. yet. maybe after few years... maybe the Android project is the answer - here and here.

Hi, I'm not new to Android and I have experience rooting and modding android devices, But I would like to take it a step further. I would like to be able to develop my own Android OSes from AOSP to run on my devices (My goal is to have ICS run on my Photon 4G) but I have no idea where to start. I don't know what KIND of OS Android is Other than Linux or what kind of programming language I should learn in order to be able to port distros to my devices. I understand the basic concepts I just have no idea where to start! Any help would be appreciated and I hope to here from someone soon. =]
TL;DR Summary: What are the beginning steps to being an Android developer for porting the versions to different devices?
Hey guys uhm i am a programmer needing to know how the android OS works as a whole im proficient in Java C++ with a little bit of PHP and Python. Now ive been wanting to get into android development for roms and custom mods but i do not have a good knowledge on how android works. i mean i know basic things like ADB, Build.prop, the linux command lines for terminal, linux kernals, and other basic things. But if you point out a file or piece of android files/folders i would probably not know what it does or what it is used for. and i was wanting to know if there is a guide on all this. or a book cause i have looked around an all i see is how to develop apps and not develop for the source code. any help would be greatly appreciated and thats all
The subject says most of it.
I would like to start learning how to compile ROMs but I don't know where to start. I figured the biggest Android developer site might yield some useful input from the more experienced developers.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Chris my name is Andrew and i might be able to give you some basic info and guidelines. First i would suggest using a ROM kitchen for basic ROM modding. I would recommend using Dsixda's ROM kitchen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246 .When you feel confident that you can get on tothe more complex stuff you can check my tutorial about compiling from source code http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667551 .After you get over that then the Internet should become your mentor in advanced source code editing (most of the time anyway but you shouldn't feel shy about asking something if unclear)
