Got a Q for all of you themers/modders/icon artists out there. I wanted to make a few WP7-esque panels (1x4, 4x1, etc...) and managed to find the resolutions posted for each panel.
My question was (I'm using GiMP for OSX) is there a recommended setting for the ppi to ensure that the image/panel comes out sharp on our SAMOLED screens? I believe the default is somewhere around 72 ppi.
Many thanks!
And off the second page we go.

Hey guys and gals,
How about wallpaper size and resolution?
What size and resolution of wallpaper are you guys using for the Archos 101. I'm currently trying to find the best size of wallpaper that will allow me to see the whole picture on the screen without having to cut a large chunk out of it.
What are you guys experiencing and have observed.

If you just use the stock wallpaper app, that is never going to happen. It will fore you to cut the picture in a square, and then zooms in.
Use something like Wallpaper Set and Save, or MultiPicture Live Wallpaper. I prefer the latter as it does not cut or crop my picture.
Same as every other Android device.
Double the narrow resolution.
So in our case, wallpaper for the 1024x600 display is 1024x1200.
For some reason though, not sure if it's Archos or Android, the quality is still degraded a bit. Not noticeable for a lot of images unless there's text that's already on the verge of illegible.
thanks, TempestDK! MultiPicture Live Wallpaper worked like a charm
I found that on my A70, I had to use a 1280x1040 image was perfect and gave me the full image. I have a great Super Mario wallpaper on currently (see attachment).
for A70 -> 960 x 800 or 800 x 960 and will work in vertical and horizontal position too
Here is a list of the recommended wallpaper resolutions for each Generation 8 devices
Archos 28 - 320x480 or 480x320
Archos 32 - 400x480 or 480x400
Archos 43 - 854x960 or 960x854
Archos 70 - 800x960 or 960x800
Archos 101 - 1024x1200 or 1200x1024

how about when it is on horizontal??does it fits?
I tried a 1024 x 1200 on my Archos 101 and it didnt look great. It lost the bottom of the picture. Looked OK in Portrait. There's something going on with the way Archos is resizing the pics.....
Anyone found a good place to find wallpapers of the correct size?
I haven't found a site that has the wallpapers tailor made to our resolution but, interfacelift.com has enough resolution options to satisfy me. I love their wallpapers. They have a lot of photography content, which is beautiful stuff.
Check it out.
the resolution for the screen is 540x960 right?
Yes but that isn't too important because you can crop a selected area. I pick the higher res Android tablet ones and just scale it to fit. Don't worry so much about the resolution because it doesn't mean squat. Pick a higher resolution, set as background, crop the area when it asks, done.

I'd be interested in the answer to your question, but if you want some good wallpaper while you are waiting, make sure you are searching for qHD wallpapers for other qHD phones, such as the Atrix.
Alternately, you can search for a specific size image with google image search online. Standard is twice the width, by the height of your screen.
qHD = 540x960
Wallpaper = 1080x960
Good luck making your own.
What I do is take an image that has a higher pixel size than what our screen has and crop it to 1080 x 960. The thing is, it doesn't get as sharp as I'd like. I feel like it should be super sharp. Icons are super sharp, why not the wallpaper, ya know. Does it have something to do with the screen itself?
Using the size parameters mentioned in the previous posts you can use photoshop or gimp (free!) and create your own custom wallpapers.

I noticed when viewing an image in the gallery and zooming it in to the size of the screen the picture is crystal clear, but when you set it as a wallpaper it gets a little pixelated so we know its not the hardware or picture itself. Could someone explain this, maybe the software could be tweaked? Try it out, the attached picture is a good example but it does it with all pictures.
Problem solved
What happens is that android compresses the pictures too much when setting them, causing distortion. Using an app called "Wallpaper Set And Save" sets the wallpaper and makes it crystal clear!
I'd like to make some custom wallpapers that will be compatible with every Android phone, can someone tell me what size they should be? Thanks.
That depends. Clicky
Could I just design them at a very high resolution, and they would scale down and still look good for phones with smaller resolutions?
I generally use computer wallpapers since the phone prompts you to crop & scales down accordingly. However, a lot of people notice better quality when using the correct size. I have cropped and resized all of my wallpapers to the correct size for my device (960x800) because I'm a wallpaper junkie. I have noticed that most people have a 480x800 display, which will use a wallpaper of 960x800 (twice the length, same height to allow for scrolling). Usually wallpapers made for Android - like the ones that come in wallpaper packs - are sized to 960x800. Newer devices are coming out with higher quality displays, and those with HTC Sense 3.0 don't have scrolling wallpaper, so 960x800 isn't future-proof. I would suggest making the wallpapers in a larger resolution, and offering both the high resolution to crop & scale, and an already resized version to 960x800 for the majority of current Android users.

What is the exact screen size I should use while developing apps for Prime ?
Declared screen resolution isn't correct, because I used that and tested and its not showing in full size as it should, so it must be some other screen size.
Don't know, but would it work to take a screen shot and mail yourself the photo?
I had the same trouble with my hubs screens. Beautiful Photoshop stuff, but when they display at the original (advertised) size, they have a few pixels missing at either end.
I've used 1280x800px, but width of 1280 won't go to their ends and height seems to be shorter, because I see font degradation and rest of the objects, but its best visible on fonts (at least in my case.)
I'll have to explore tomorrow with different sizes... although I don't like these testing where I have to do whoknows how much of them to find exact dimensions.
The system bar take 48 pixels. So the actual resolution that's is available is 1280x752
If you going to create a app. I why don't look at android developer section for guide and info.. Just a suggestion...

Both of your links don't mention 752px, there is 720.
Anyways I don't use Android SDK or any other of their info. I use Adobe Flash and do it all from there. Very easy and no need for lots of reading
