Question About Vibrant 4G / Plus Rom - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been using Team Whiskey roms without fail for many months now......I recently noticed the Vibrant 4G / Plus rom that was credited to Eugene and Whiskey.....I disabled Voodoo and flashed this rom on 3 different occasions.....What has happened each time is that it freezes really bad and is very unstable.....My signal keeps going in and out and it took me nearly 30 minutes to be able to get into Clockwork Recovery to flash back to Bionix rom.....It was freezing so bad I couldnt even get into the market......My question is this.....Is there something I missed while flashing this rom....Maybe a different kernel......Thanks in advance for any advice you may be able to offer me.....

Sounds like you need to clean out those "Ghosts of Roms Past". When was the last time you odin'd to stock - all the way back to Eugenes Froyo That Won't Brick?

Remember, this rom is still in ALPHA!!!!!! it was made as a proof of concept.
It wont come out of ALPHA until I get my new phone and finish up Bionix Frost. Which is based off the official build for the Vibrant 4G. (Not the leak that we have Alpha based on now)
The build is done, Just need to add in the mods, and finish making the wallpaper.
But wont be able to test it until my phone gets here.

What ^^^^^^^^^ Krylon said. ALPHA might have bugs, as it is still very new and not ripe enough for ingestion.

I flashed with Odin prior to flashing the rom.....First time I forgot to disable Voodoo and bricked my phone so I had to flash with Odin.....Other than that and repartioning through Odin is there anything else I should do besides wait for a more stable version.....?

its alpha but pretty stable i dont have any problems wit it,

[Q] want to try a custom froyo 2.2

Hello folks,
I am some what new to the Android OS, I have a vibrant that has been updated with mini kies to the JI6 2.1 ECLAIR. I am anxious to try out Froyo. I thought I would wait awhile until the Devs could work out some bugs. I think that has happened by now. So I have three questions.
1. what is the most stable custom Froyo based ROM I can flash on my vibrant?
2. Is there a Froyo based ROM that already has mobile AP enabled for the vibrant?
3. Where (if possible) can I download a stock ROM of the vibrant? (Before you tell me to make one, know that mine is not stock, I have installed OCLF, and the JI6 update)
thanks for any help that can be given,
RAMROD

1. [ROM] Obsidian V2 - JK2 Official Froyo Based 2.2 - Team Whiskey - *11/08/10* Very stable for me
2. Yes [ROM] Obsidian V2 - JK2 Official Froyo Based 2.2 - Team Whiskey - *11/08/10* I think most of the Froyo releases have it now.

This is my preference, seems very stable and can be a daily driver. I imagine its going to have an update soon, we'll see. I don't like TW, if you do, perhaps try another version (eugenes or TWs Obsidian).

Mobile AP should be in there, Im charging so I can't check.

-- Wait the link was to a "True Stock" 2.1 rom, are you saying that is your current preference over Froyo?
-- Your aversions to TW... is that you don;t like them personally, or you do not like their roms?
^ HAHAA, Sorry, let me clarify:
I LOVE Team Whiskey. I HATE TouchWiz (TW).
The link is to Onyx. It is 2.2 without TW (TouchWiz). It flies on my Vibrant... no FCs, very stable. I imagine they are going to have an update soon but the good news is they are not wiping data now so you can flash R21, then R22 and not lose anything. If/when they release R23 I imagine that too will not wipe data so you can just flash right on top and not lose anything.
LauncherPro is more appealing to me, more customizable and it's faster. There is nothing I like about TW better than LP. I also hate scrolling left to right (I know there is an alt way, but LP is better for me). Look at the downloads/comments for Onyx (no TW) vs. Obsidian (the 2.2 version with touchwiz) and you will see an overwhelming majority prefer no TW.

So I installed bionics Obsidian 2.2 on my vibrant using Clockwork rom manager. Everything went smooth. It installed and booted just great, I really liked what I saw. Only problem I ran into was I had purchased a app before I flashed rom. After flash, it was gone.. not just off the phone but not in the market either. No big deal normally I would just go into market and click Downloads and there it would be. Not this time, cant even find it doing a search. I paid like $14 usd for it so I would like it. But its completely gone. Maybe it wont show it to me because of the new firmware?
Now, it is not there and my first instinct told me to re-flash... So I open clockwork and try and re-install. I locate file on SD.. But, instead of rebooting into clockwork, it reboots like its going to and reboots again but into standard recovery OS mode.
What would be the easiest way for me to re-flash this using a macbook?
Remember reading somewhere that the market installed was the european version so some paid apps would appear. However i can't seem to find the post that originally mentioned this issue. Anyone else remember if obsidian was using the european version of the market?
C to the L-O-T-O-R-I-O, U-S, you just, lay down slow.
If you have clockwork still installed (the answer is yes if you have a team whiskey rom loaded), if you get to the standard pre-loader, recovery mode, just select "reinstall packages..." That should get you into CwR

Just got onyx up on my phone, and damn.... You were 11O% correct about launcher pro.. Did you buy the full version?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Regarding apps... don't forget to get Titanium Backup and backup not only all your apps but also their data. I recommend the donated pro version for $5.99 which makes the backup/restore process completely painless and automatic. So after you flash a new rom if something like you describe happens you can just recover your app from your backup.

So.. what's the best excuse to get a new vibrant?

Mine is having too many issues with the 2.2 ROMs and I seem to be the only one, or one of the few, meaning its my phone... What's the best and less expensive(free?) way to get a new one from t-mobile? I do have the warranty plan as well so I'm already paying... Any help?
Go into the store and explain to them your situation and that you have been installing custom roms and they don't seem to work right. I am sure they will be completely understanding.
You are better off waiting for the official 2.2 release and if that causes problems then you have an official firmware on it that has issues.
Have you ODIN to stock then installed a new ROM?
If the phone is defective and you are paying for the insurance, then I would take it into the store.
If the phone is user error, then I would wait till the official release or go back to stock. No sense in trying to get something for free IF it's user error. (Brick)
thanks for the quick reply, Guess I'll wait, stock gives no problems so hopefully official stock 2.2 won't if it does I get a new one thanks
When flashing new ROMs on the phone I have had the best success to odin back to JFD first and then flash the new ROM. Currently running the Deodexed JK6 and it is running smooth.

Yeah saw that too. Went in their IRC and asked but the ppl who were on told me it would only work with I9000 and the Captivate-i897.
I'm in the process of getting in touch with Darky to see which is true haha. If it does indeed support everything now, there will be a special installation method for Vibrants.
Go ahead and flash it...your problem not mine ;-),I flashed it and paid the price,it will not run on U.S. models....it will wipe your phone of everything,so be sure to back up everything on your pc as I did luckily.
It wont damage your phone or anything but make sure your near your comp unlike when I flashed it lol becuz it will wipe all....I had 3 other roms to flash back to on my phone but like I said,it litteraly wiped everything

hmm i pm'd him and he said to get the darky app
or something like that?
I was on their IRC this past day getting HOW to install his ROM.
Yes, it WILL work on a Vibrant but it will have a major BUG. The bug is the same as jellette/Heathen's Ragnarok 2.2.1 port that he tried a month ago. The phone will restart when it reaches a certain network strength value. I'm talking to jellete now to see if there is a fix for that but I don't think so as of RIGHT now.
If you wanna flash it though:
You need two things before you flash.
ENSURE you are on a 2.2 Froyo ROM (or 2.2.1 if you can get one). You will need the modem and kernel from the current ROM. Ensure the Kernel is i9000 based. This means you will need to use Morfic's DoW 1.4 or Ttabbal's Dragon 3.6.
Get the Darky's ROM App configurator from the market.
Get the Darky's 9.3 beta 1 ROM and copy it to your phone.
Using the app, uncheck flash kernel and modem. You do NOT want the flash to flash the i9000 kernel and modem that comes with the rom. You want your old ones.
Reboot into clockwork, flash the modified Darky ROM that DOES NOT include a kernel and modem.
Reboot.
NOTE: The Rom WILL WIPE your phone. You've been warned. Back up EVERYTHING and anything that may be of value to you and have ODIN ready in case anything goes wrong.
it seems too complicated, i'm a fan of darkyy's roms because a friend of mine has a I9000, and he had it running, and it was amazing, and no rom on Vibrant can compare to it. YET. The Devs here for the Vibrant are awesome, but darkyy's got more experience i guess, but his roms are just... faster, better looking for some reason.
I just PM'd Darkyy, and will reply on this thread if any response is made.
I suggested to him that he can chat with our Vibrant Devs as well and try to make it compatible with our device.

Hi there
I need to make this more userfriendly - yes, it works with any device (it's a bit basic for now)
For now, you guys just need to select "Skip Kernel" and "No-Modem" in the Darky App and then flash - btw, since v9.3 Beta 1, the automatical Wipe isn't there anymore
Will update the ROM soon
I'm off for 3 days now

There are really only two permanent fixes if you want 2.2.1.
1. EDTs 2.2.1 which is a hybrid at this point, incorporating the Vibrants stability with the 2.2.1 speed.
2. TWs Frost which is pure 2.2.1.
Neither of these are based on I9000 though, both are based on the V4g.

[Q] kernel question(nooby)

So i just flashed CM7 yesterday and im in love, now i want to move onto kernels to get even more out of the already lightning fast CM7. As far as i can see there is only one CM7 supported kernel? The "1.4 highpro for cm7 old-oc version 3 with proper dhd.ko" I poked around for a while and cant seem to find if this is in the "alpha" stages or if its a stable release yet. Just looking for anyones .02 cents on a good kernel to pair with CM7.
As of right now that is the only kernel that is out for CM. Joker is the Dev that put that out and is suppose to be putting another out that is reworked. I would flash it and see how it is on your phone. My phone is weird, I can get it to boot and run great for about a day or until I reboot then it goes into bootloop

V3 kernel is what i flashed to get OC against the stock CM kernel. its all you have to pick from unless you can build one yourself. Joker is planning and is making more tweaks to his builds and will be updating with more. flashing kernels is a simple and fast thing to do, so moving to his updated ones or rolling back is not a hassle. If you want OC, you will be safe with flashin jokers V3. when he posts new ones, ull boot to recover, wipe dalvik, flash new zip for the kernel, and youll be good to go.
be careful... flashing is an addiction. lol
Stupid question, but if i flash it and get stuck in a bootloop or something happens how do i go back to the stock kernel..? Just create a backup of entire rom in CWM and reflash that if something goes AWOL? And is it just my phone or does it take a long time to make a CWM backup? I made one so far of stock rom and it took literally about an 45 min to an hour or so.. And thanks for quick and useful responses!

What version of CWM are you using? I had that same problem with romracer's previous version, but the latest works great. Unless you include webtop in the backup, and then you may as well go out to eat while you wait.

Pull the boot.img from cm7 and the dhd.ko then put them in my cm7 cwm zip. Rename.

[Q] What's the safest way to switch from Froyo custom ROM to ICS ?

Hello,
I would appreciate any input.
My Vibrant has a custom ROM (Trigger v2.8.2) and I would like to move to ICS.
It seems that the safest way to do so would be by going back to stock 2.1 as stated here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
Then, I would have to follow these steps
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do6mTvgfH8Y
Could anyone please confirm whether:
1. This is the safest way to move to ICS ? I read about risks related to installing Gingerbread Bootloader and would prefer not taking any.
2. Going back to stock 2.1 means I will lose root and will have to root again (I rooted it long time ago and no longer remember what I really should expect while flashing) ?
Thanks

I tried that before and it's safe.
-odin back to stock
-flash CM7
-flash ICS rom of your choice
But beware, it may cause some problems like the rainbow thingy other than that it's safe.

See my guide in the General Section. It works. Read it, watch the video ( beware though that djeddieone skips some important steps. Not sure how he did it but there are several things he skips).
GB bootloaders are no longer needed to run ICS but as stated above you may get Rainbows although this seems to have been fixed several versions ago.
Good luck and ask questions if need be but please search first. The ICS guide was on the front page of General.
Thanks everyone.
Woodrube,
Do you think the latest Passion version is still risky (I mean the Rainbows) ?

GB bootloaders are very recommended. It was found that on mr_psycho's subZero kernel #17 you could not get into recovery at all with Froyo bootloaders but all was fine with GB bootloaders. So sometimes it's not just rainbows.

Passion should be fine w/o them (as long as you are using stock kernel or one of the Kissed ones)

I agree with Bob, I do recommend having GB bl's but they are not needed on the general ICS builds (for the most part). From what I read in the Zen thread, MP streamlined his kernel and it seems that the recovery broke on Froyos b/c of what he took out but was fine on GB and he recommends most be on GB as well. So the 1 kernel out of all of them broke it for Froyos. I am wondering if MP will fix this for the masses or just keep it as GB exclusive for subZero/Zenwhich?
With that being said, I think that Passion/ Euphoria are good for the general public, while AOKP/ZEN are for more of the advanced users like us. And mostly the ROMs are ROMs. It is the kernels that are being built so fast nowdays. Bootloaders for someone not knowing what they are doing is extremely hazardous and they shouldn't be flashing them unless they know what they are doing.

So, I should not bother installing the bootloader as long as I am using stock kernel? I don't intend making up anything else, just going back to stock 2.1 then moving to ICS Passion. I would prefer not taking useless risks on a phone that I am expecting to last a few more months until I upgrade.
Thanks
Yes you are good (for now), but if you swap kernels, make sure you are reading about them first.
Kiss 2.2 seems to have the best performance with Passion

How do you get rid of these "Random offset" errors that prevent from installing the ICS ?
I did try at least ten times and I still did not succeed.

That's normal. I get it every time I flash an ICS ROM. After it throws that error, don't touch anything. It'll finish installing the ROM on it's own.

Thanks for replying.
Does it install whatever the ICS version is ?
How long does it take ? Hours ?
I had the feeling it gets frozen...
Thanks,
I think you should give Zenwich a try. GPS now works, it is light and based of AOKP too. I have hardly ever encountered the security block.
I know that someone else I was helping kept getting stuck at that point and they just kept flashing it over itself. Sometimes when I get to the point where you are, I would either Odin all the way back and start over or flash CM7 again and let it boot up completely and then try Passion/ Euphoria again. Should push through.
Don't forget to format /system in the appropriate steps too. I have noticed that and not wiping /cache and /dalvik-cache after CM7 boots up causes things to get wonky b/c of ghosts from CM7 apps.

I no longer remember whether I did wipe/cache and /dalvik cache after I flashed CM7.
Do you think I should do so before retrying to flash ICS ?
Thanks again,
Yes. I actaully forgot to do it once and it made all the difference in the boot up and stability.

Well, still no luck.
Even after wiping cache/delvic and more than one hour waiting for the "Random offset" message to disappear, I can't get past it.
No idea whether it is my device or this Passion 13.1 version.
Which version could I try without taking too many risks (Rainbows) ?
Thanks,
uh oh
i took a fresh vibrant on eclair, rooted, place cwm update.zip, rebooted into cwm recovery, flashed cm7 update kernel, than flashed ics passion 13.1 rc1 build 2. somewhere along the way the phone stopped talking to tmobile but i dont know where. now im left without a backed up efs, my fault i know, and i dont know what to do?

coming from cm7 wipe data, wipe cache partition/dalvik, format system(mouts and storage), than flash ics passion latest edt.
Eventually, I was able to flash ICS Passion.
I simply had to follow all steps mentioned on their thread and it did work OK.
Now, I wish there were secret codes compatible with ICS as I would need to make some changes within the bands.
I read somewhere that old ones would not work (unless used with Samsung firmware).
Anyone know about using secret codes with ICS Passion ?
Thanks,
