Unlocked TMOUS Vibrant vs AT&T Captivate and why?
That is the question of the day as I am currently debating wether to get one over the other. I know the two devices are nearly identical in guts but factors to consider include form factor (which is better in hand), development support (which phone has more custom ROM support) and others which you might deem helpful to add into the discussion.
I am currently leaning towards the Vibrant for some reason because I have heard pretty favorable comments on it. Oh and it might be helpful to know that I am in the AT&T network and would only consider to get an Vibrant if it were unlocked.

The Vibrant doesn't have the UMTS 850 band.
So you won't get as much 3g coverage as you would with the Captivate.
Thanks for the input fellas!
You see what I mean? When it comes to these two phones, trying to decide which one, is better gets a little contradictory.
So in terms other customizability, which one wins? Because that is a thing to consider and I am now sort of leaning towards the captivate for its better housing (metal vs plastic).
Any more input is appreciated guys.

Vibrant cause you can use international galaxy s cases. Once you put on a case its all same. I rather prefer vibrant than metal because its lighter. And plastic absorbs more impact. Less chance to break the screen.

Agreed.
Really, the Vibrant (imo) is a better looking phone, and adding a front-facing camera is very easy on it too.

saintsmmx, Post in the captivate forum and you will have tons of defenders for captivate. Having said that, I personally like the look of captivate, it looks like a high end phone more so than the vibrant.
choose captivate if you want to save more battery. why? because it has a feature that when you don't use the phone it will automatically power off. cool huh?

Yeah I know, but I thought I might post here I favored the Vibrant a bit more so I was looking to see what people thought customizability-wise. Haha but I should post there to see what they think of the device also.

Haha you're being sarcastic aren't you. So is that a bug or something that the device turns off automatically when you're not using it? Or not? Or are you not even being sarcastic lol.

Well my Vibrant is unlocked, and currently has an AT&T SIM in it. I suppose one advantage, if you have poor coverage where you live with TMO, you can use the wifi calling app and get around that. With AT&T you have to buy their personal hotspot thing, and requires a monthly plan.
I have a TMO prepaid SIM that works great in my Vibrant.
Also - I think AT&T locked down some features in their version. (possible BS on this one).
TD
They(ebay) have rubberized back covers for vibrant too . And I don think ATT have received their official froyo unlike us .

Ok chief I think the ratio of favors from Vibrant to Captivate is about 3:1, so favoring the vibrant right now.
So what if its now down to these two phones? I'm actually just looking for something to replace the HD2 that I have right now with something that has great hardware specs like super amoled screens like these two phones. I know the nexus s is also out there but that is waaayy out of my budgets reach. So if you have a phone to suggest I would really appreciate that a lot bro
Sent from the Heavens
I was about to suggest the nexus s. lol but if you're out of budget then you may just get the vibrant. people here would suggest to learn flash a custom rom because the vibrant is PIS when on stock but when using a custom roms, it's like one of the best phones out right now IMO.

The Nexus S is the phone most likely to be updated in a timely manner, as it is primarily controlled by Google and not a carrier (even though it functions on T-Mobile's network).
HTC seems to be better about updating than other OEMs.
a HTC or Nexus S as the guy above me said, they both have great software update times.

I'm going to go with nexus s like everyone else. I'm surprised you dont like the vibrant with nero v3 with voodoo on, since with that it becomes a better phone than the nexus s (at least speed wise).
To be honest, I'd probably go with the nexus s or one of the phones coming out soon if I could. The problem is I bought this one from tmobile for the upgrade price and one for my wife for full price, so it's not really an option to spend anymore on another phone unless it were absolutely necessary.
I'm still content with my phone though. To anyone saying it's already outdated, I guess that makes every phone out right now outdated. The vibrant is comparable (hardware wise) to any phone currently being sold. It really could use some more dev love though.

I purchased a Nexus One based on the same logic...unfortunately, as I'm still running 2.2 when 2.3 has been out for almost a month, I'm starting to question the soundness of said logic.
I do realize that no phone has been officially updated to 2.3 (the Nexus S launched with it). Despite having some excellent custom ROMs in the development section, I'm really disappointed that it's been weeks without an official OTA (or even a leak with some updated drivers for that matter).
To the OP: Are you opposed to a physical keyboard? What about the G2?
Honestly, for t mobile the vibrant is probably their number one imo. So you either go with the $549.00 nexus s, or G2....i don't know, whatever....

Lina, Samsung is to blame for the Froyo firmware issue. They made a promise they could not keep. BUT don't be afraid of updating your phone, It is a lot easier than you think. Since it sounds like you've already done it once already. I know you may have information overload if you have been reading the forums here. Check out my thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10341870 of two tutorial videos I have made for flashing roms. It is presented as "simple stupid" for anyone to understand. Good luck. Don't throw out the Vibrant yet =]
The last few days have been very slow in this forum. I hope people are just satisfied with the phone and are not posting. I guess I'm just spoiled by the Evo 4g forum where you always had something new to read.
Starting to worry.

For me - I love the phone. Only thing I'd change would be placement of the USB port relative to the kickstand.
I've rooted it to remove bloatware, but don't know that there's anything that I want it do to that requires a custom ROM. Customizations, yes - but launchers, widgets and apps can do what I want.
I was in the same place with my EVO 3D. Stock was fine.
ROMs were necessary in the WinMo days (and perhaps the early Android days, though I missed those). I spent a LOT of time cooking kitchens for my WinMo phones.
There will always be people who like to cook ROMs as a hobby, but I knew that the Moto Photon would NOT be one of the target platform for them - will be mostly HTC phones, I imagine.
Well unlike my evo shift I'm happy with the phone the way it is. The evo shift was boring unless rooted and running a custom rom.
I love this phone and i'm satisfied with just root. Best phone I've ever owned. It just seems like there were a lot more people in this forum last month.

I also spent more time here and AC a month ago, but really don't have much more to say, or problems that need solved. I'm spending my time now customizing it and try out new apps.
Enjoy it!
Love this phone but its too complicated to unlock boot loader and such so people lost interest in the forums, not the phone in my opinion. I came from the Nexus S 4G and don't see a reason to lose 4g for a rom its great as it is running launcher pro. Just my 2 cents.

Photon was a great phone, its great with root alone. I now got the sgs2 and gave the MoPho to my gf. She loves it coming from an HTC Aria. I was too nervous to unlock the bootloader, I tried but it looked too risky. I was pretty much satisfied with stock and my own build prop tweaks, there was no need to unlock. I do recommend to phone to people who aren't as tech savvy for just being a good dependable fast phone.
The sgs2 is no way inferior to the photon, every day use they run about the same, the photon does have better battery life and video recording, the sgs2 has a bigger screen and an unlocked bootloader.

CPU is only one component in comparing phones, and IMHO not in the top 3 criteria. Screen, battery, radio signal, construction quality, vendor support all more important than minor (in the real world) CPU differences.
I won't get into any more bashing - will just say glad you like your phone; enjoy it!
I think my Photon is the best Android phone i've ever owned and I've had a few over the past couple of months, including the SGSII. The SGSII is a great phone but just too thin for me, so when on a flat surface my manley fingers couldn't quite grasp it right and i ended up dropping it. The Photon just feels perfect, build quality is great, just ticks all the boxes for me and I'm gonna stick with it for a while

Phone is great out of the box, not much to complain about on forums nor are people in a rush to slap a ROM on it like they would need to so their Samsung works correctly.
I came from the tmobile vibrant. At one point I had a choice of 65 custom roms and 11 kernels. I wanted unlimited data and more minutes and sprint was the only choice. I got the epic but took it back the day this phone dropped on the market. I like htc but 3d had some drawbacks. Mainly signal quality. I would like more roms, but mainly overclock kernels. I am learning to make my own themes and that will probably satisfy me. I hope development picks up, but if it doesn't I won't be upset. This is a wonderful phone and works right out of the box. I don't get 4g on my end of town and probably never will, and I could really care less.
It's good to see people are still here and they are satisfied with their phones. This is probably the best phone Sprint has to offer right now. It sucks that it was released sandwiched between the 3vo and sgsII.

Hi, i also upgraded from a fascinate and a continuum. This phone is pretty sweet. I would definitely suggest this phone.
The things i loved most about this is the 8mp camera and the big bright screen because i love watching movies on the go.
The beats headphones are awesome, definitely better than the ones i had for my ipod
I upgraded from fascinate, to charge, then this. IMO this is a fantastic phone. I love the camera, and its pretty slim design, similar to the fassy.
Coming from 2 samsungs, with ODIN and all, it was a learning curve to root and flash roms, but if you read everything carefully, you will be ok
When in doubt, ask for help
theetit N1
IMO the only downside is the screen isn't as bright, and the Colors arnt as vibrant. BUT is does have a better resolution.
Would it be better to go to the galaxy nexus, I don't think it's as powerful and I'm not sure I want to stay in the Samsung family.

Personally whenever I'm looking at a new phone (if your gonna be stuck with it for a while) I consider that software can be fixed/changed/updated (thanks to the devs), the hardware not so much.. That being said.. I REALLY miss my fassy and had to upgrade b4 i wanted.. got lazy with not flashing the gb bootloaders >.<
It doesn't feel like a huge leap forward from the fassy, but they are at two different stages in their life cycle. If upgrade you must.. I'd go with the better chipset.. just my 2cnts

I'm sorry but the comparison of the Gnex and Rezound have been beatin to death...that being said the best thing you can do is stop by the local Verzion store and check out the devices to see which one works for YOU. I have them both and there are some things I really like about the Gnex but it really comes down to personal preference. Currently, AOSP is a work in progress and if you happen to be a person not fond of Sense, the answer is obvious unless you'll be okay with Senseless roms for the time being.
That being said, a lot of the aura has worn off of the Gnex becauase many other devices (including the Rezound) are running ICS. We have some great Developers who work their tails off and a great community.
P.S. The Rezound has dropped to $49.99 and the Nexus is still the same price of $299 IIRC which may also factor into your decision.
Good luck on your decision.
Gnex has terrible radios and an even worse camera. Else wise I loved it. I love my rezound and chose this over the gnex in the end. Even with sense it doesn't feel slower than the gnex. So once we do get cm9 it will make the gnex feel like a joke.
And hey by may who knows what will be available.

Just a few questions, what roms have bln support? Is there any cm9 rom variation that supports bln?
Also, what rom is giving decent benchmarks?
Is this device even recommended at this point or wait for the s3?
I believe Saurom has the bln support but is 2.3 I think. you can always stay stock and flash Da_G's kernal that has bln support. Thats my preference until ICS is out officially and is matured a little bit. I wouldnt trade my note for a 3s at all, but that all depends on person to person. Its huge and and fast enough. If i wanted a phone under 5 in, then i would get the s3 fo sho. Size and speed balance was my factor and im am super happy with it.
I suggest two weeks of dedicated arm exercises before trying to pick up a note. It's a beast.

I'm using the Collective's (now the Family) GB ROM...which does support BLN...or the kernel they use does. Not sure on the CM9 variation though. Like stated in an above post, I plan to stay with GB until the dust settles with ICS (dust for me is an OC kernel and the Family tweaking the hell out of it).
Benchmarks wise...no idea. Not really a benchmark kind of guy. If it feels fast and does what I need it to do, then I'm good.
Get the Note if you want a 5.3" screen and plan to use it like a tablet and not a phone. By phone, I mean just making voice calls and texting. This device can do so much more and has good hardware to boot. It may not have the S4 or Exynos processor (at least in the ATT version), but it still is up there with the big dogs. You really have to embrace what this device is truly capable of. I love my Note and have no intentions of going to another device...unless it's the Note2 or a badass device with a 5.3" display.
I am definitely a cm7 rom fan as that is what kind of rom variation I use on my old inspire. I just returned the one x because att will not allow you to unlock the bootloader so we can have dev support so I returned it. I have no patience for that.
So now the note I had when it came out but returned it as well because almost no dev support, and had an issue with my screen that was annoying..just problems from first production batches I guess.
Sure att knows me for returning phones if I'm not happy and I really don't care,or I care as much as they care for their customers
With all that being said I def am the type that should wait a few weeks and see what kind of dev support the device is getting as hey isn't that the reason we all come here sort of. I miss the screen size of the note, not gonna lie. I can only imagine custom roms have improved benchmarks, and there seems to be quite a few custom roms out now including a cm9.
So Im thinking of getting this or the sgs3 but by the time it reaches att and gets dev support, I can use this.
Opinions? Thanks

Does the S2 feel like the standard cheap Samsung while holding it? Or does it actually have some weight to it? Coming from LG's and HTC's, those things are heavy.
EDIT: The Galaxy Nexus is supposedly available again next week.

The S2 does feel flimsy when holding it, but you get used to it honestly... Dropped the phone many times, only have one dent on it.

For me it is decent enough to look at and doesn't feel cheap even though it's light weight. Hmmm, you should decide whether you want a fast update (GNex) or better hardware buy slow update (Sgs2). Sgs2 is a great phone but samsung has the habit of updating a device for a year and then stop (not 1 year but you get the point). If i had the chance i would swap my sgs2 for GNex but i'm in doubt since i am a heavy user and i use my phone for gaming. Also, GNex lacks External SD card which is a No No for me.

Well, either way, I'll look forward to the device. Having the international version will be cool since not a lot of people have it, especially in white.
There is also a guy selling a white Galaxy Nexus. not too sure which to go for, same price even.

I don't really care for the OTA's, I'll flash whoever put together a flashable version of whatever OTA is released...
I actually ordered a G. Skill 32gb SDHC Class 10 from newegg.com for my G2X, which I don't have anymore, now with the Nexus S, I have no use for the card! The SD write speeds on this phone are HORRIBLE, about 800k/sec!!!
I'm a fan of the non-carrier branded devices for some reason. My G2X had LG on the top instead of the traditional T-Mobile, and the screen hue while turned off was a brownish color instead of a blueish-gray that the TMO version had. I had one of each G2X's and in comparison, the screen for the LG branded was much more vibrant.
Now I have the Nexus S, again no branding, which is another reason why I want the Galaxy Nexus.
I'm confused, to say the least!
Well, if you don't care about updates then go for the international sgs2 (i9100). Great specs and still one of the best phone in the market.

The S3 is WAY to overpriced, I would just get that, but not willing to dish out around $500 for a non contracted phone.
Oh, another reason to stay away from the carrier branded for me, is that they won't get IMEI/ESN locked by which ever carrier!

Huh? i don't really care to receive Jelly Bean on the Nexus S, the DPI is atrocious on this phone. That, mixed with the screen type don't equal out to a good display. My G2X looked WAY better than this device.
The S2 will get a good Jelly Bean port before the Nexus S will, I'm sure of that.
