Any of us still on stock FRF91 with mac addresses not starting with 00:* are dealing with the bug where wi-fi disconnects when the phone goes to sleep:
(sorry, my account is too new to properly link the bug thread)
google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=01a47ff5b0a92d52&hl=en&start=120
This is fixed in the latest CM6 nightly builds, but I don't think it's possible to get the .ko from that build to work on stock FRF91.
I backported the fix from git (android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/system/wlan/broadcom.git;a=commitdiff;h=5a838529e6197475cbe8f5a4557fbd31f90586a6) to the earlier version of the driver.
I've been testing this for the last 30 minutes and haven't been kicked off wi-fi once after the screen went to sleep.
How to install:
Make sure you're on FRF91 and have rooted yourself
adb shell and get root via 'su'
Copy your old driver to /data/local: cat /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko > /data/local/bcm4329.ko.old
Check that the MD5 of the unzipped .ko is 959dda656228b4191f8e97b920482ae2
From your system, adb push the attached bcm4329.ko (unzip it first) to /data/local/bcm4329.ko.new
adb shell and get root via 'su' again
Copy the driver over top of the old one: cat /data/local/bcm4329.ko.new > /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
Reboot
You'll probably screw up future OTA updates if you manually patch this, but it's easy enough to undo (just flash the stock FRF91 or replace the old driver). Also, it worked fine for me, but you'll be doing this at your own risk, etc, etc etc.

Does this work?
I'm at work without access to a usb cable and wonder if this is worth looking at later today.
I like this alot too bad am too bad at the shell stuff, can't this packed and flash it from recovery ?
nevermind that, I thought it's something different than normal push pull stuff.
Can do this through Root Explorer very easy and less hectic.
This doesn't work on CM 6RC1. get a wireless error can't start wireless.
I don't have the problems that my nexus logged of the wifi network while screen is off.
But when I make a ping to nexus one everything is fine when screen is on, but it become very unresponsable with screen off and has connection time out.
Is this the patch for that problem?
Can more people test this out? Some people report that the latest CM doesn't fix this issue.

CM6 ships with a different kernel, so this .ko won't work for those builds. This is only for those on the stock FRF91 build who can't use the updated driver from the latest tree.
For CM6 users, it should be fixed in the latest nightlies here:

This patch should fix this issue. The broadcom driver in stock FRF91 filters out traffic to the device when the screen is off due to a bug in the implementation that was supposed to filter out traffic to other devices instead.
I can ping my device even while the screen is off with this patch in place. You may also have to change your wi-fi sleep policy to get the best results.

Hi man, maybe you can check out the my thread about this issue here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731395
I hear there are people with the latest nightly build still finding the problem exists. And their MAC address starts with actually 00?
How about your case? Did your phone have this problem before and its MAC address, I suppose, begins with 38?

My n1 has a 38:* MAC address, so I was seeing wifi disconnect almost as soon as the screen went off (and getting disabled in some cases).
There are other wifi issues on the n1 phones. This patch just fixes the worst one.
Yes, and my NexusOne has a MAC starting with 00.
WiFi doesn't disconnect, but I can't hear stream audio....
I try this fix here now.
But, what I wanna know:
Kernel updates includes this bcm***.ko, too.
Can you share your fixes, that the kernel devs can use them, too?
I tested this and seems to be working fine, thanks a lot.
Just wanted to add another thank you. I tried this and it's worked great.
Hm, it doesn't work on enoms rom.
Now I'm sad.

Possibly because enoms rom is using a different kernel. I suggest you request enom to update the driver source in his rom.
Hi guys
someone can upload a modified stock (FRF91 or FRG33) with the fix?
i don't know how to fix it and i will be very grateful
thank you!!
@mmastrac
thank you
it works only on original FRF91 ROM
can you make ist for FRG33 ?
I just tested the new FRF83 (2.2.1) and it includes this fix. Pings now go through when the wifi sleep policy is set to never, as they should.
I'm not really sure about this part, but looking at the new bcm4329.ko binary it appears this patch was included:

Sony Ericsson X10 Barnacle wifi tether can't tether with my Galaxy Tab, what should I do, please help
Dont know. I can't even download it from the Market or AppBrain. It says it's not available and that could depend upon my phone (x10A 2.1 generic) or location(USA/AT&T), both of which I have read of other successful Barnacle tethers. Can't find a direct apk downloadable file either. :-(
Any help, please? I need my laptop for pending vacation.

It depends on location as AT&T have blocked it. Use the attached app called Market access to "trick" your phone into thinking that it is not on the AT&T network. Choose from the listed operators (I used T-Mobile USA) to download it. Make sure you back up your SIM value. Enjoy!
I'll give it a shot. Once again, Batman appears and saves the day.
Edit: Worked like a charm. What other tricks you got hidden in the batbelt? Questions...I thought unbranded meant I was free from AT&T. Does that mean the market is really ATT Market? What carrier is the most open? Before I try tethering for my first time.. Will tether work with AT&T APN, and is there a thread I will need to setup Windows7?
Edit2: Nevermind...my pc is now tethered. ))))
I'd click the thanks button but don't know how from my phone.

Glad you figured it out, I was sleeping in the batcave!
As for the market, it depends on the SIM card you insert. The phone (Market) detects your carrier and hides any apps not allowed by your carrier/country. I am not sure what carrier are most open but, whenever you don't find what you are looking for just change the SIM value.
Finally, you can hit the Thank You button when you are back on your PC!

I installed barnacle via the side app loader found on this site... worked like a charm. I configured barnacle settings per previous postings from the forums on XDA. However it says my connection is excellent and my computer is communicating with my phone but i can get online. please help
I am having the same problem as the OP. I have two x10s in which one has cm7.0 but it can't connect to my barnacle wifi from my other phone. My girl's iPhone 4 connects just fine though. Wondering if there is some kind of fix to resolve this issue.

Since the 2.1 update you actually don't have to adjust any of the settings to make it work. Reset to default if you can. You should be fine.

First off, thank you for your response. I unfortunately am still on 1.6 firmware. I have downloaded Bi4nary flash tool and the generic 2.1 firmware however the flash tool always has a problem loading files and I cant figure out how to get to 2.1. (yes I have AT&T those bastards)
As far as my barnacle issue I have the lan set to athwlan0, i tried changing my DNS to 8.8.8.8 and Also have run the cmd and manually changed the netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wireless Network Connection" mtu=1250 store=persistent.
My computer recognizes my phone and says connected there is even data being sent and received but I can not browse or even get google to load.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and respond, all help is greatly appreciated.
Help
Now it will connect and show internet access for a brief moment then why a page trys to load or if i ping the connection or run ipconfig it loses access. I think the problem lies in the setting of my laptop, I just dont know what to do.
Thank you to all who comment on this.
It seems to work for a short while and hten stops working. If I reconnect it works again for a short while.
oh i wish someone told me this.........
since you cannot get barnacle from market on ATT, download from vendor directly!
don't do that crazy workaround.

If you want get to 2.1 download the first generic 2.1 update. Also, make sure you have PC companion on your computer, try to do an update with it first (you don't have to do the update if there is one, just junk), it will install the necessary drivers on your computer to use Flash Tool.
@Prodeje79 - Awesome direct link for barnacle. Wish this was available for me back in the day!
I have PC companion downloaded and it says all software up to date, but still on 1.6. Do I need 2.1 to run adobe flash player, and barnacle. My phone is rooted by the flash tool no problem, i have SU permission but barnacle wont work. It even shows little amounts of data being sent and received but no connection to the internet. I tried the flash tool again and it says error loading data. I have the firmware downloaded.
I am a little all over the place in this post, sorry i'm a little frustrated.
I am really trying to find a way to use barnacle and adobe flash on 1.6
if flashing to 2.1 is the first step ill focus on that.
thanks

I can assure you that flashing 2.1 on an AT&T phone should not be a problem. It must be something you are missing. You keep saying that you have the firmware downloaded, but you don't say what you downloaded and what you did with the firmware. You need to download the X10a generic 2.1.A.0.435 ftf file, and you need WinRar to unzip or extract the ftf file from the download. Then put the ftf file in the firmware folder inside the Flash Tool folder.
Here's a good link for what you need...(except WinRar, search google)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
thank you. I already had winrar downloaded, and I downloaded the rtf file and put in the firm folder as directed, I will follow the link and try once more. I finally got barnacle wifi to work and downloaded an app called open home 6 from the market that gives me 5 home screens and some other cool features but i'm still on 1.6. Will upgrading be mess with barnacle.
Another question is although I am able to browse just fine, every time I attempt to download a torrent file via utorrent I get all these error messages and connection stops working.
Can you some how connect your PS3 using barnacle, although PS3 can not see adhoc connections?
My final question is as about adobe flash player and xperia x10a running 1.6... where do i get it, is there any way to run flash.
Thank you to everyone...

Let me know if you are still having problems flashing 2.1. Actually, check your PM box. I helped someone else the other day with detailed step by step instructions for updating to 2.1, which I will try and forward to you.
If you want flash to work, you have to go up to 2.2 Froyo, but you'll have to install xRecovery with the flash tool to install the ROM. I think you have to be on 2.1 successfully in order to install xRecovery, but I am not sure. xRecovery allows you to download ROMs directly to your sdcard/phone and install them from the recovery menu rather than using the flash tool. Also, I think there is another browser that has flash for 2.1. Try maybe dolphin or skyfire.
Below is the link to FreeX10 beta 4 2.2 custom ROM, which I am using. It's vanilla Android. You'll lose some camera functionality, but there's a new camcorder fix that you'll also need to flash with xRecovery as well. You will need barnacle as well, as native wifi teathering has not been implemented.
2.2 FreeX10 for xRecovery.....

No one use wifi of laptop for X10 mini?
120 views and no answer....
First of all.. you gave so little info about your problem..
You didnt say what firmware were you using, or specificly what did you do, also u didnt give any info about your issue, is phone stuck at Sony Ericsson logo, is it stuck in endless boot cycle or is it even comes on when u press power button.
Second... I see big problem, im surprised how didnt you see this... That is a guide for x10 NOT FOR x10mini /pro so, in start you were doomed to fail.
Third.. Why would you even do that? I have x10mini and im perfectly fine using my home Wi-Fi (on same is my Notebook/Laptop)
only wi-fi edit that i know is 802.11n support on x10 mini/pro
In each case your solution is reflashing your phone:
You can find "how to flash" guide here:
X10 Flash Tool
Guide how to root your phone:
For 2.0.2.A.0.24: here
For 2.0.A.0.504 here
All that u need to know is here: Summary for X10 Mini & Pro
I cant help you more since you didnt say anything more detailed about your issue. And that is the only reason why anyone didnt posted.. Ppl dont know how to help you..
Edit: By reading topic that you linked i understood what you wanna do, it seams that all ppl that tryed that solution failed (2 ppl menage to make it work). Did you read second page of topic? There is solution without editing files.

But, yet again, its for x10, i didnt see anyone mention it in x10mini/pro section.
Again, your solution is reflashing, i posted guide, follow it and everything will be fine (you will reinstall firmware) its easy, i do it couple a times per day since im doing heavy system/framework edits.
Edit2: Just to make it clear, every link that i posted is for x10mini/pro, not x10, since im not sure what phone do you have.
Sorry for my bad English. I live in Vietnam, and in my town, Wifi is not much, there is only 1 near my house, my laptop work with it but my phone doesn't because it too far, so i want to use internet for x10mini on my laptop.
I've use firmware 2.0.A.0.24 rooted. And i've read guide you post, i have only phone and laptop, what should i do now, i don't understand...
what's wlan controller for the x10 mini?
So you menage to repair phone?
You didnt read guide that you followed to brick your phone carefully its for big x10, not the mini/pro models..
Second, im not sure it works, since everybody in that topic had random issues.
My proposition is to try following, its the safest way:

It enables you to make your laptop in Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling your x10 to find it since it will be hotspot.
Only bad thing is that it ONLY works on Windows 7.
Also, be aware that default x10 wi-fi settings enables you to see 802.11b/g networks, not 802.11n..
To set your x10 to see 802.11b/g/n network, follow the guide here
And be careful, every wrong edit can brick your phone, and you will need to reflash again, or, even worse, damaging your wi-fi configuration.
Hello,
having the follwing problem: On my Xperia Mini Pro (sk17i) the wifi is not working anymore.
How does it show up: When enabling wifi (e.g. via gui applet) it disables immediately.
When does it happen first time: I played around with phone connected via USB to computer. At the same Time I played around with Wifi Hotspot und USB Tethering (which seemed to work). After this, wifi connected no more and I never got it working again. I know, this could be just coincidence. This happens with build 4.0.2.A.0.69.
I waited, since new ICS update has been shipped and installed it. But it had no effect. Wifi haven't worked.
Since I thought it would help to have writing access to the configuration files, I rooted the Phone and made a downgrade to buld 4.0.2.A.0.42. I installed also Android development kit on my computer. The wifi problem persists. Now there is a possibility to change files in system partition, but I have no idea, where to start with.
Attached to the post there are three log files:
dmesg.txt - Logging while running up the phone
logcat_Extraction.txt : Logging while starting wifi via applet. It shows how wifi tries to get up, runs into an exception and disables.
tiwlan.ini.txt : configuration file for wifi. (windows converted)
I'm not really deep in android/linux, but have several years programming experience with windows.
It would be kind, if anybody could give me a hint of what went wrong (configuratoin, driver, hardware fault?).
ADDED: Perhaps anybody could post a tiwlan.ini(.txt) from his/her phone (SK17i), so that I can compare it with my one?
Best regards
Horst

Thanks for your answer.
As I used Flashtool. I selected option "Wipe Cache". Is it that, what you mean with "factory reset"? - My first hope was to solve my wifi-problem with updating or downgrading to another build version, but it had no effect on it. I thought, that the partitions with eventually damaged configuration files or invalid drivers will be overwritten by the new one. Possibly I was wrong.

Yes, in Flashtool I choosed the other possible options "Wipe data", "Wipe apps log" too. After the phone has been rooted, I installed CWM for having an image from the partitions, but I saw no other way to save them completely but pull and push single files with adb.

Hey Guys,
Really hoping someone can help me out here. I've been trying to root a friend's Xperia U for the past 3 days now, without much luck!
Its on ICS, Firmware ST25a 6.1.1.B.1.10, unlocked bootloader. The two methods are Bin4ry's script and using FlashTool .For starters, USB debugging is enabled.
In both cases, the phone was undetected, even after installing loads of drivers found all over the web. After extensive reading, I came across a suggestion to enable USB tethering, and lo behold! The phone was detected!
"What's the problem then?", you ask?
Well, after following the careful instructions to restore the 'RootME' backup (on the phone), it phone reboots. When it comes back on, the screen is a mess, very dark (similar to a burnt screen) and extremely slow to respond. I read elsewhere that this is quite normal(!) and will be fixed after subsequent reboots.
The problem lies here, as I believe USB tethering is no longer ticked after the reboot, and it needs to be, doesn't it? Both Flashtool and the script wait for the phone to be detected, with no change at all. I somehow manage to navigate to 'Settings', but on trying to access tethering, it always crashes as below:
"Unfortunately settings has stopped"
Ugh.
How do I see the message when the screen is burnt out, you ask?
Pulling down the notification bar lets me see parts of the screen on its way down, and back up
Soooo...
Without USB tethering enabled, rooting does not complete, and I am left with a nearly un-useable device (until a factory reset). My internet speeds are terrible, and I am now in the process of downloading another firmware (6.1.1.b.1.54) in the hopes that it does not need USB tethering enabled to be detected by Flashtool (or Bin4ry's scripts)!
Thoughts? I want this baby rooted and CWM'ed!
Use xperia u toolkit..search in forums.eats very easy to root and do so many other things.i rooted mine using that only.
