hold both volumes and power until you see the contact screen for the second time.

Same problem here. Spent a day trying to get it to work. Finally gave up and used the one click root method to get into recovery. This is my second Vibrant, so it's not that I haven't done this correctly before. Very strange, but one click worked for me.

The one click doesn't do anything
It puts the update.zip on my internal storage then doesn't reboot or anything
Would it still work through adb?

I've spent several hours trying to get into recovery and download mode via the buttons. I've tried everything I've found on the forums, and pretty much concluded that the US Vibrant is seeing the same issue that Bell Canada and Aus Optus is with some phones not having the power button reboot functional for whatever reason. I'm going to return mine tomorrow for one that works. Hopefully I don't get any static about trying them out till I find one that works properly.
ADB works fine for me to reboot to recovery and download. I personally would use TGA_Gunman's root.
Hey guys. I just bought a Vibrant today and am having this same issue. No matter how many times I hold either volume button independently (or even together), I can't get into Fastboot, or I guess Download mode as it's called here. I'm coming from a Nexus One where it works everytime, so this is kind of weird. Launching RomManager and selecting to boot into recovery does work, but I don't want to rely on that.
Is the smart thing to go swap the physical phone?
I am having the same problem with my Vibrant. Anyone figure out how to get it into recovery?

As unpleasant as it may seem to do so, it really behooves you who are having those issues, (as am I with my 3rd replacement!!!) Vibrant, it is absolutely worth your while to set up ADB, for numerous reasons. It solves both of those issues and allows so many other options. Once you do the installation of the SDK on your PC and install the right drivers, it is not at all difficult to use it to do many important things much easier.

he means boot rom and hes right just download it from app store and click install clockrecovery and after that click reboot in recovery and your done.
The problem with relying on adb, Quick Boot, and Rom Manager is what are you going to do when you flash and your phone won't boot? You won't be able to get into download or recovery mode and you'll be hosed. Take the phone back while you can and get one that works.
Exactly. I'm curious if there's a way around this though. What is it
that actually causes the phone to boot into recovery with the hardware keys and is it something that can be fixed/flashed?
I already exchanged once within the thirty days and I don't think the 30 days gets reset. Think I'm past the return period now.

I'm so glad you wrote that. This is exactly my feeling. In ideal solutions, ADB or even installing a terminal emulator onto the phone is great. But for any dev who dabbles with modifying their phone in any way, having access to recovery directly from the phone is an absolute must.
Im having the same problem but let me ask could it be because Avatar is in the sd card?...I keep reading (NOW) that the Root zip files should be copy to a SD without Avatar....

There are two "SD" cards, an internal and external. The external one is the on that the user can swap. It also contains the Avatar movie (if it is the one that came with the phone).
The update.zip file should be copied to the internal SD card. The one WITHOUT the Avatar movie.
I also cannot get my phone to boot into recovery using the buttons. I rooted using one-click.
It seems to be an issue with new/replacement Vibrants. I have a thread about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764360
If anyone has a device like this and can pull a dump file from it and upload it, that would be fantastic! I'm not sure if this is a physical limiter or a software based one, but I'm pretty sure it's software based on experience and manufacture dates. Once we get a dump, I'm sure someone will be able to figure it out.
And to back what the others said, I was able to adb download no problem, but when the Odin flash hung, there was no way to get back in to download mode and I ended up having to exchange the phone. As soon as my next one gets here, I'll test and post a dump if someone else hasn't already.

I had the same issue on a replacement Vibrant and this works for me to get into download mode (even after Odin hung and it looked 100% dead):
1. Removed SD and SIM card
2. Removed battery
3. plugged the phone into USB
4. held down vol-up and vol-down
5. popped the battery back in while holding vol buttons

Excellent directions. Worked like a charm.
OMG! I seriously thought my Vibrant was trashed! Excellent directions for getting your Vibrant out of Boot loop and into Download mode:
1. pull everything out of phone (battery, SIM, SD card)
2. Plug in USB cable
3. Hold down both volume buttons
4. Insert battery while holding down volume buttons.
My phone went into Download mode easily at this point.
In my case, my phone got stuck in Boot loop while trying to use ROM Manager for a new ROM. Guess I used it wrong, I'll just stick with installing ROM's by way of Recovery mode. Anyway, my phone stayed in Download mode until I flashed it with ODIN. I just flashed it back to stock and started over. Here's the link:

I'm so glad I didn't have to exchange my phone, I feel bad for those that had to exchange thier phones, this is a nice workaround.
i try it went into downloading screen. Odin did not see my phone. What can i do now? Can anyone help.
Okay so i ditched the stock rom for axura 1.0 and am using it...but i changed my mind and want to go back to stock...but never made a backup of my stock rom in clockwork like a moron. Now i tried Odin and here is the weird part it detects my phone in recovery mode...but not download mode so now im stuck trying to get back to stock vibrant 2.1...any suggestions?

This is the easiest way. Download Terminal from Market and enter SU (gives you root access) and then type reboot download
Your phone will reboot into Download mode
i tried the su reboot download and it didnt detect it and i reinstalled the drvers too no luck cuz it says usb device not reconized when in download mode but when in recovery or normal mode it is detected no issue
Here's how I do it if everything else fails. Have ODIN v1.3 opened up first. Next, make sure phone is in debug mode and make sure its checked . Next, while phone still connected to pc, remove back cover and pull battery out. Before inserting the battery back in, hold the phone side ways while pressing the volume up/down at the same time now insert the battery. Your screen should now display yellow big letters -
Download Mode - Do not turn off target.

Read the Vibrant Bible here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111 . Read the top 2 sections --Useful links and Odin.
By the way, is your phone rooted?
Have you tried using a different USB port? Sometimes that helps.
yes the phone is rooted and i tried using odin v1.0 and 1.7 ill try 1.3 idk if it makes a difference
One method I've read on the boards is to flash "Eugene's froyo that doesnt' Brick". Of course that is an Odin file so...we need to get Odin working for you. Like icandy said, try a different USB port and see if that works. If nothing else also post in Master's Axura thread and ask him/her what the best method of downgrading to 2.1 is. I'm not sure if you'd have to flash Eugene's Kernel Back Support or not. I know this isn't too helpful but hopefully it'll give you a few ideas.

Hi, I recently bought a used Vibrant from someone... Worked great.
So I decide to update it and hope maybe get the GPS fixed, but Kies wouldnt work, I tried on 5 different computers with different windows, no luck, crashed on windows 7, and said the OS on the phone is a modified version and so it cant update on Windows XP,
So I decide to try Odin... but Odin only detects the phone in USB Debugging mode, and thats wasnt very helpful... For some reason, whenever I try to put the phone in Download mode, Windows XP AND 7 say that an unrecognized device has been attached... I tried USB drivers, 10 different times on each comp, different combos, different techniques from all over the forum and the internet... Odin wouldnt show the device in Download mode.
So I install clockwork and download the rom to restore the device to its factory state, I have it reboot into clockwork recovery and restore it using the files I downloaded to the phone... Now the phone doesnt boot, it stays stuck on the "Samsung" logo, I hear the T-Mobile jingle, but thats just it, the Samsung logo stays on and nothing happens.
I cant access the phone from the computer at all now, since it could never detect the phone in Download mode anyways, and when I put the phone in recovery mode, it shows two hard drives that I cant open... I have a micro sd card that I tried to load another restore onto and try to use that in recovery, but the recovery mode wont let me browse the sd card....
I hit a brick wall now... I don't think I have a use for yet another paperweight.
Ive all but given up, so if you could please help me, I would reaaaally appreciate it.
Edit: I tried using Ubuntu, but same thing, nothing happens in Download mode, and it only shows two drives that I cant access in recovery mode.
What ROM did you flash?
Yes, I installed the drivers over 10 times over on 10 different comps using 10 different versions of the drivers.
Kies, Kies Mini, drivers I found on these forums, drivers I found in other forums... nothing
Rom... Ummmm I used this file wwwmediafirecom/?kqaulorzx5f6dyq
UPDATE: I formatted the sdcard now, cleared cache and personal data using the recovery console... Now im even more screwed up because I cant access the other options
"E:Cant open /sdcard/update.zim (so such file or directory) installation aborted"
Ok, I put the phone in recovery mode and opened Odin, it was detected... I know its supposed to be download mode, but Im really desperate and am going to try anything since it only detects my phone in recovery mode... I pressed start in Odin and it hasn't moved in 30 minutes

Odin will not work in Recovery mode, you have to be in Download mode, use the key combinations for download mode, mine is turn off the phone, unplug the USB and hold down the volume key and turn the phone on, while holding the volume down, and make sure you have the pit file, do a reasearch and you will find the pit file for vibrant. You have to have the pit file attached when you use Odin. But make sure you are in download mode not in recovery.
Get phone into download mode. The easiest way to do this is pull out battery from phone. Then plug phone into usb connected to computer it will have the battery sign. Hold volume keys and power button when the screen goes black let go of power button. You will be in download mode if Odin doesn't detect it unplug usb and replug it.
Also clockwork can not read your sdcard, it only reads your interal storage.
I tried that for Odin again, and it didnt work, I also tried a hundred different methods and steps, but they all have the same problem.
Im on Windows 7 64 bit, and I get a message after about 5 seconds of plugging my download-mode phone into the computer that says "USB Device not recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it, for assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
In device manager, I see one of the devices is called "unknown device" when I plug in the phone in download mode... I tried to manually install drivers from a list, but none seem to work so far...
What if I manage to somehow put a file in the internal memory, would I be able to use the recovery console to bring the phone back to life?
EDIT: Sorry for double post

Correct. You can get into cwm recovery still correct? only if yes to first.....And when you are in cwm with phone plugged into pc if you type adb devices what comes up?
Wait... I must be confusing recovery mode with CWM... Sorry Im still new to android... How can I bring up CWM if the phone doesnt boot? Last time I brought up CWM I had to use the ROM manager when the phone was working........
OH CRAP! Now I get it, when you try to reboot into CWM, it reboots into recovery the first time, and then youll have to reboot again to get into CWM... Oh... So that means.... I tried to restore the file I downloaded using the recovery console, and thats why it crashed my phone....
Well.... Im gonna try to connect the phone to yet another computer in download mode, I doubt it will work, but I will try.
Meanwhile if you guys have any suggestions.... And sorry for my stupidity...
Oh, and as for ADB, I tried to install that on my computer, but when I go to CMD, it keeps giving me an error saying the device is offline... So Im guessing I have to turn it on somehow using the phone...?

Thegreat has helped me narrow things down... Im using a blackberry mini USB data cable, and so that COULD be the problem.
If anyone reading this has a mini USB cable that was not specifically made for the vibrant, could you please try to connect your vibrant to your computer in download mode using the cable that wasnt made for the vibrant?
Does the computer detect it?
I would really appreciate any feedback, because I dont currently have the original cable, and it would take a long time to get one shipped from samsung, not to mention the hefty pricetag because its OEM.
Help would be appreciated
I have used a blackberry specific cable when booting into dl mode and flashing odin, and it works for me.
Try this method if you haven't already, or keep trying it, sometimes doesn't work the first time.
1. Open odin on your pc an have the pit and tar fies loaded.
2. Remove battery, sd, and sim cards.
3. Plug in usb cable from pc to phone.
4. Holding both volume up and volume down, pop the battery in.
That should boot you right into dl mode. If you get the green battery image, pull battery and try it again. I have found if you hold the phone face down in your left hand when holding the volue buttons, makes it a little easier to keep the buttons depressed whie popping the battery in. Hope this helps, good luck.

Was there any resolution to this problem? I've been having the same problem for a while now. Worked around it using Wifi apps to log into my phone, as well as just using the external SD card for most media files.
Odin doesn't even recognize my phone and I've tried just about everything. I just get a USB Device not Recognized message when I plug it in and even then I don't always get that.
Thanks. I'd love to be able to odin the phone back to stock and see if the ROMs I've been using perform better after that.
I flashed Doc’s ICS v 12 coming from Bionix V (2.2 based). Didn’t really like the rom..wanted to go back so I tried to restore Bionix V from recovery…. The phone was taking really long to restore so I restarted it from recovery. Ever since then, It has been stuck on Samsung Vibrant black screen. The three button combo isn’t taking it to recovery either. Seems like I bricked my phone… Is there anything that can be done to get it to a working state?
Thanks a lot
Oh hey I bricked my phone the other day!
Alright with the research I did, there's a few things to try.
One, take your battery out. Plug in your phone WHILE holding both volume keys and plug in the battery. See if anything comes up.
Two, or try this. This is what unbricked my phone. My phone wasn't responding to attempting to get into download mode. This saved me.
One-Click Unbrick
I read that it's different for everybody, so take this with a grain of salt since I'm sure you've already been successful at it before, but you should only have to hold the Volume Up button to get to the Download mode if you're using the GB bootloader. Take out your battery to ensure the phone is off, put the battery back in, hold the Vol+ button only (no power, or combos), and then connect your phone to the USB cable plugged into your computer. That's all I've ever had to do to get to Download Mode, but like I said mileage seems to vary (by bootloader, I think).
If either that or knoka's suggestion works and you get your phone back, you should always use odin (or heimdall) to get back to back to a pre-ICS state. Using a nandroid/CWR recovery/backup to do it is bad mojo (as you're well aware now), and should only really be used when you're messing around with ROMs of the same flavor (Froyo, GB, ICS).
So I was able to bring the phone to download mode.. I took out sd card and sim card, pressed the volume up key only and plug it into usb port.
My computer isn't recognizing the phone... how can I unbrick it from here on. Do I use odin? Are there any other simpler methods? If no I will use odin ...can anyone direct me to links...I found a bunch but not sure which one i should go with?
First, you cannot restore a 2.2 coming from any GB or ICS ROM. You need to Odin back to 2.1 and then go back to 2.2. Once you flashed ICS you repartitioned the /system from RFS to MTD. This can only be reversed by Odin or Heimdall.
That you can get into DL mode is good. You can uninstall your drivers on your PC, download the toolbox from my signature and reinstall the drivers that way. It also has the pit/tar files and Odin v1.8 included as well. Look at the AIO Toolbox's OP in the Dec section for instructions.
Thanks for the advice. I am downloading your toolbox.
Is there a way I can just flash the same ICS rom I did before. I want to get my phone in working condition for this week if I can as I am busy with a class and have to study for it.... if not then I will suck it up and odin back to 2.1 tonight
another question: after installing aio toolbox. I clicked on flash to stock: checked if the USB debugging is enabled...it said its disabled. How do I enable it when my phone can only be in download mode. thanks

At this point it would be better to get it back to 2.1 and then flash something from there. If you need something that works right out of the box, try Moped_Ryder's ROMs. They are 2.2's but if you need something to work completely while you are studying, I would suggest those for now. Then once things calm down for you, then flash an ICS.

You don't need to have debugging enabled to use Odin. Just make sure the yellow COM button is lit up and you are good to go. Debugging is for Mass Storage Mode, not Download Mode.
awesome...Im back to stock vibrant. I mounted the sd card and the previous app folders are still there. How do I reset/factory wipe to get rid of all that junk. AIO toolbox says to unplug, replug and then click on master clear button on odin..however i am unable to find that button...there is a 'reset' button.... is that the one i need to click?
Thanks.
I would just do that manually on your PC. Just pull off everything and put it on your PC. That way you will still have a copy of anything that you might need. Masterclear will wipe everything and once it is gone, there is no return.
When you are ready to flash a ROM, just pull the CWR from my signature and put it on your internal. Make sure it is the only thing labeled Update.zip and then boot into recovery, scroll down to reinstall packages. It will cycle through and you might have to hit it again. Once it is done, your recovery will go from stock (blue) to CWR (green), then you can flash away.
If you are going to flash an ICS ROM, see my guide, also in my signature. It will help.
^ Thanks so much for your help and advice. My phone is back to normal ..I was able to flash Bionix V 1.3.1 rom and everything is fine...I wouldnt have my phone in working condition..if it wasn't for your tool and this forum. Thanks.
I am running stock 2.1 Eclair. My kernel is JFD. I am rooted. Please help.
You can put your phone in download mode, then you can use Odin. Make sure your phone is off, then press the volume button + and - at the same time, connect your phone via usb, then your phone should be in download mode and Odin should recognize your phone.

Yes, you must be in download mode. That's the phone state Odin uses to communicate with your device.
With all sincerity, there many, many guides that I would check, These threads are difficult,if we dont know your problem, level of expertise, or intentions,...good peeps that can help.
Alright... Thanks anyway guys, I appreciate it.
Any ideas where to check for help?
Here is fine, I think we are all confused. I thought the question was: Does my phone need to be in Download Mode to be recognized by Odin?
The answer to that is: yes.
Is there another question? This is the right place, fire away friend.
whats going on i guess its not working for you yet i see ....what is it that you are trying to do you lost me now lol.....if your rooted mate then you should have the update.zip file to install CWM recovery on your SD then install ROM manager search around for it people say its not in the play store but its all the way at the bottom if you search ROOT install the app and follow the onscreen to install the recovery mod and then you should be good to go on flashing turn your phone off and and hold all 3 buttons to turn it back on as soon as you see the logo pop up let go of the power button and you should be in your recovery then install zip from SD send PM if your lost
Haha sorry for not making that clear. I went into download mode and it didn't recognize it. I knew it had to be in download mode. I ended up restarting my computer and plugged it into a USB 3.0 instead of a 2.0 port and it worked just fine... Thanks anyways for trying to help.
