[Q] Busybox on Gen 8? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know if i can install Busybox on my 101? I want to try run ubuntu on it (like on the nook color) and it seems like i need busybox first. I tried running the busybox installer app and the method mentioned in the nook color thread but both failed. Tnx in advance if you respond to this.

We'll need alot more info than that. Firmware version, root status, etc. Or you can just install the developer edition and use the included Angstrom, it's linux customized for the Archos Gen8.
Also, just FYI, the Archos already has busybox, i think it's required for Android in the first place, but I bet getting busybox isn't nearly the hardest step anyway.

sorry lads i shoulda given the info first time round.
firmware 2.0.71 rooted with archangel.I've already got the sde installed.
i've a little more linux and android knowledge than an average user but it's still limited. tnx for the reponse.

Moved to general as not android development

Umm, not to sound like a dink here, but if you have the SDE installed, why do you need ArchAngel? I'm pretty sure you can root through the SDE more effectively and without running the "questionable" code Archangel....

archangel was just a means to an end and it was quick (3 kids+1 wife+job = little or no spare time) just rooted with newer kernel and removed archangel. sorry if i wasted your time with this guys but as i said this is a learning curve for me.

If he wants to run linux, it makes sense. He'll need the developer edition bootsector for it, so Archangel will let him root without using up the secondary boot option.
I would reflash the develop edition and boot into Angstrom to see what it's like. All the extra Ubuntu stuff would probably grind the a101 to a halt. If you think it's worthwhile, you can build a custom angstrom build with more features.

New official folio update (2.2.5.0131), DO NOT UPDATE, if you want to use Custom Roms

Hi,
I´m writing this post to notify that there is a new official update from toshiba.
I cannot give more information, because my folio is in SAT, but the version number might be "18/02/2011 (2.2.5.0131)". I have no info about changes yet, but I´ve red something about preparation for the new flash player and more utilities.
My source:
htcmania.com/showthread.php?p=1874046&posted=1#post1874046
(Sorry, I can´t still post urls, you may add the usual www to check the adress)
Maybe we have new materials for our favourite mods (for me, Folionotion and foliomod, I can´t decide).
Any additional info will be wellcome, thanks

Is there support to market place?
Will we have it in mods ???
I have installed it.
It seems to be more performance in 3D games.
Flash plugin preinstaled, and it can run the flash animation in Toshiba's web page .
It solves some bug about brong accelerometer axis in some games.
But no Android Market, only the same *sigh* Toshiba Market.
The question is whether we can install FolioMod on top of this update or not. For me,it's not worth updating this without DexterMod, which is already very good imo

THIS UPDATE WILL BLOCK YOUR UPDATE OPTIONS, AND BYE BYE CUSTOM ROMS
I confirm that the root of 5.0131 is ok yessssssss !
I'm guessing this updates the recovery kernel, and the recovery kernel is the only place that the recovery kernel is visible from to write? So root access is not enough for a simple way of updating the whole OS partition.

they might have blocked it on the new update as well, making it really hard to get revert.. but on previous editions you can easily write a new recovery.
the partition is visible at partition 7, but this might have changed.
i have not had the luxury to look at the actual update, so what is inside, is for me to find out.. then we get all the nasty details.
ok guys... anyone having installed this update pls kindly report the following:
1. stability status
(crashes freezez sod)
2. software issue - can sideloaded applications be installed and used?
3. root ability ?
4. 3d games like dangeon defenders working ?
5. custom flashing ability?

2.3d games like the one mentioned should work has a charm
3.root ability yes
4.ability to sideloads apps not tested but should be fine since you can root its easily
5 custom flashing ability yes using adb to instal first the old kernel
basicly the tablets works has it was ment to be i think that toshiba might even suprise everyone by realeasing honeycomb for this tablet in future
When I go to Toshiba Service Station, there is no update available(using Dexters wonderful foliomod). How do I get to see it and if I want to install how do I keep all the wonderful stuff on it already. This is my wifes and not mine so she will get pissed off if she loses everything on it again?

and honeycomb will not appear as display is just 1024x600, so no chance of a google certification for folio100 here, same as with gapps support. so forgot toshiba solving that..
Saw people got honeycomb running on nook color with the same resolution screen... no certification does not mean that is not possible...so we still can have our fingers crossed on that

I don't doubt you can. But I guess this screen resolution difference could cause troubles in some apps again
Just read about the new update and the issues with it. I have my Folio sent in for repair and they always update to the latest firmware before sending back to customer, so it looks like im in deep ****. I know how to use adb and fastboot, use them all the time on my desire hd and my VEGA. Maybe someone could write a good guide on how to flash this old recovery and which of all the rooting procedures that works with the new firmware. I also dont know how to get Folio in fastboot. But if we have a working root we can flash the old recovery or clockwork recovery, is that right? Because if not i might as well throw it away. No use in trying to sell it, no one will buy a useless tablet anyways. HOPING FOR A GUIDE CALLED: HOW TO RESTORE YOUR FOLIO WITH FLASHABLE RECOVERY

[Q] [Help Request] Getting ROOT without Uruk or using APP

I am interested in just making my stock Archos 101 (clean install from format w/ sde) to have just root working right now. I have used Uruk and I just don't find it stable enough for me to want to keep around, instead I would like to stay stock but have permanent root access without using any apps. Unless the app is 100% garauntee'd to give permanent root access always and no stability issues or conflicts with other apps.
I turn to you XDA for this help request. Hopefully to hear from someone with some more information soon. Maybe some guides, links, etc.
If I have to use an app that would be fine, but I would really like to know how to do it without using any apps. Just to make my own. Thanks!
P.S. i have done alot of reading and alot of the posts just made things more confusing to me. I am hoping to get some good clear information, thanks everyone here at XDA!

[Q] Few questions about Android

Hello, new Galaxy Ace and curently in the process of customizing the **** out of it. Few questions:
1. Exactly what pre-installed apps can I uninstall safely? Device is rooted, on GB 2.3.5.
2. I plan on installing SaidyBoost, do I need to uninstall apps if I'm going to do this?
3. The thread is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1561806, could someone please tell me how I install a kernel that supports init.d, and should I install ext4lagfix?
4. To install it, do I just put the .zip on the SD, then update from recovery mode, and do I need CWM, and does this void the warranty (I'm guessing yes).
I'm sorry for the spiel; I'm usually the one doling out the advice but I am a total n00b to Android. Any help and time taken is much appreciated, thank you

1. You don't uninstall.. It's impossible. Maybe possibru if you have a file manager and you navigate into /system/app then mount it as R/W (read & write) and delete them (not so recommended though)
2.No need to do anything, just install it
3. Get yourself a ROM, and see in the ROM thread which kernel runs best with that ROM. Many kernels support init.d
4. Dude, forget about the warranty. Get rid of your paper, your warranty was gone the second you rooted your phone
Press thanks if i helped

Soo, get yourself a recovery, boot into recovery, make a backup.
If you want to learn ROM development, this is the place for you ..
It will tell you what to do, and how to do..
After that you will learn to delete apps you dont want(ex.Maps;if u dont use maps)
Then you make a flashable zip and install it through the Recovery you installed previous
The thanks button is below the post im posting now
One better (IMO) option than uninstalling pre-installed apps (as this has been known to cause problems with updates and stability/performance for some) would be to use an app like Gemini App Manager to turn off Autorun settings (usually just turn off "On Boot Completed", but some other events can help also) for the apps you don't want to use. That way, these apps will not use up resources in the background without running the them yourself. That way you can keep the apps around in case some future update or something else requires their presence.

MOJO Kernel source

Hi,
Just wondering if/when MadCatz will release the kernel?
I know linux being GPL, it has to be shared, but not sure about Nvidia's sources?
I'm new to android but not java(my day job) and linux.
I've compiled and installed my own kernels on desktop and on my mobile phone (Nokia N900).
I want to try and add a few things.. ie filesystem/DVB/webcam support etc.
Following this how to.
Apologies for the delay in getting this released. Here's the kernel source:

Yes i hope someone can make a kernel to re-apply resolution settings on the m.o.j.o, as mad catz said to me via a phone call some tv's can't adjust to 1080p natively because the os is preventing it,and stupidly they removed the resolution changing slider in settings don't ask me why they did that?
If there is a way to set resolution without endangering the console booting up afterwards would be awesome,i am thinking it is there but hidden away and accessable some way but don't know how, developer options can be opened but not resolution settings as far as i have found any way.

I think it automatically sets the resolution based on the TV/monitor, try a different one?
TMK, the slider has nothing to do with the kernel.

I would do that but i only have a panasonic 50" plasma it's a 600hz 1080p it p50x50b model, there are 2 variants of it a hd ready and a 1080p model,i know it's the 1080p model as i used blu ray and xbox 360 and a wiiu etc in 1080p modes so it's definately not 720p only on my model.
I still think it is possible to reinstate that hdmi resolution slider though? I would love for someone to find a fix for that to bring back the slider though.
It also has nothing to do with the overscan as that's off,and the guy said it's an argument between the console's os and the tv,but maybe if i had an option to change resolution within the console when in operation it would ammend this, resolution changer pro works then looses usability eventually and it's awkward and time consuming to get that to work, only for it to stop after a time?
There is no forced hdmi resolution setting in the tv menu unless of course there is in engineer mode but all that seems to do when entered is show test and it's results coming up as ok,after testing it factory resets the tv as well so sick of trying that now.
Someone needs to get a custom rom made up with kitkat and 1080p natively set.

It doesn't time out but it says some .c and .h cannot open: Not a directory when I use tar to extract it. Then I thought that I should install something else to extract and tried ARC. It extracted and then the same message box as appeared in windows 7 OS "file already exists cancel or overwrite"
I then said overwrite and then I get the extracted package. I just want to ask you that when you extracted it did you got any errors? What procedure you used to extract it? I downloaded twice with same results...

OK as per your suggestion I used wget c and the address. That gave me again the same file and upon extracting it I am getting same errors.
May be that the file isn't corrupted as you can extract it and its possible that I am doing something wrong in extraction..
I tried to create the kernel from sources and got a make error, to remove that I must delete a line in the make file (Line no 603) and after that I can successfully compile the zimage. But the issue is that after completing the procedure for boot.img file the original and compiled one has a difference of 0.1 MB and device don't boot with the newly compiled boot.img
Please if you can provide me with the steps on how you exctracted it and which OS you are using?then it will be really helpful. Also can you please upload the makefile of kernel and config.gz file you are using to make the kernel...
One useful information that can prove that there is an issue in extraction:
Extracted content on windows OS with Administrator priviledges: 42889 items , 487.8 MB
Extracted content on Ubuntu with Tar and other utilities: 42692 items, 482.5 MB

Hi,
I'm in Aust. so there's a time difference.
I'm also about to leave on a 4week holiday and don't have my mojo dev stuff on my laptop.
I just used tar -vxzf filename
I think the only errors were a bad lsymbolic links which arent required.. from memory I could be wrong.
If you read the other threads here, I and someone else explain how we got the kernel compiled and yes it works fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2691985&page=2
You dont use their makefile you recreate it .
If this is your first linux kernel or even android kernel, it's a tricky process and it takes time research all the steps.
Good luck

I'm also about to leave on a 4week holiday and don't have my mojo dev stuff on my laptop.
I just used tar -vxzf filename
I think the only errors were a bad lsymbolic links which arent required.. from memory I could be wrong.
If you read the other threads here, I and someone else explain how we got the kernel compiled and yes it works fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2691985&page=2
You dont use their makefile you recreate it .
If this is your first linux kernel or even android kernel, it's a tricky process and it takes time research all the steps.
Good luck

I have gone through with the links you provided already and I understand every bit of conversation. Yes I am new to kernel compiling but its reasonably understandable.
I respect your valuable answer no matter when you reply since you have a minute for me and don't worry about TimeZone differences as I am not in a great hurry, I just don't wish to waste time on errors for which I ain't responsible
OK I tried compiling modules for which I had to compile the kernel to get the module.symvar file and "THE MODULES WORK!" that too with the Default kernel Makefile and ofcourse my own module Makefile.
"You dont use their makefile you recreate it" this line you wrote.. What do you mean by that??
I mean were you talking about the kernel Makefile or our own module Makefile, Please clear me here? As far as I know the Kernel Makefile should be the same when only compiling the stock kernel as that is my purpose "JUST TO COMPILE THE STOCK KERNEL"...
My compiled kernel boots but just shows a black screen! I don't want to spoil your holidays sincerely but if some help I can get from you then I will be able to relieve me from this burden
Hmm got it compiled finally even after that make issue with -k flag to make
Also all I needed was ramdisk from latest OTA and not the one from the kernel. That was the issue with kernel booting but it freezing at blank screen...
RESOLVED :highfive:

Glad you got it working.
Re the makefile, I think you have to run config first to check your systems compilers/linkers/etc which then creates the makefile.

Apologies for the delay in getting this released. Here's the kernel source:

is there any reason this is done via some random ftp server and not some place like github/bitbucket with better management? or heck even sourceforge would be an improvement.
is that account for developer outreach? are there any datasheets on the components used in the device? sony does a beta program for updates on their flagship devices have you considered doing something similar where people can grab images and help test updates? ever think about tossing the device trees up for aosp to help encourage a porting of 3rd party roms and spread the community?
the nook color and touchpad being hack and having Cyanogenmod and the like being ported to it drove sales up, i would imagine having a hackable android console that isnt some no name chinese brand would probably do decent. unfortunately now with android tv you guys have some serious competition on the horizon, its a matter of how you go from here and try to make the most of it so everyone already has your product and doesnt need another.
edit: i also see there is several updates yet only one kernel source... any chance of updated source?
@Mad Catz Rich
The new update (205-TS) has a new kernel build of May 2nd.
Any chance that can be put on the server?

Ready to Root
As any Android power-user knows, the best way to get the most out of your device is to root it. Root access opens up all sorts of options including adding custom keymapping capabilities and installing custom ROMs. Mad Catz provides a short step-by-step guide to rooting, and our tech support team is ready to help.
The best part – rooting won’t void your warranty.

ARCHOS tablet for kids ARNOVA KIDSGEAR Help!!!!

Hello please can you hellp me I have this tablet for kids and kitkat is on tablet and I want put the new kitkat on.
I was tried root but as soon as the turn it off no longer be rooted!!??
Please help me!!!!
Well I did not think archos did that on other devices after the Gen8 ones but to me it would seem like yours is booting from a squashfs image which means you can't permanently modify the system/root partitions so to actually achieve permanent root I think you might need a kernel that mounts a unionfs partition and uses that to store system modifications.
I can't really give you more help than the information above with the limited information you gave us, perhaps you could list the device's full name, generation (if it has one), device ID, android version, CPU/SOC info, and some pictures of the bootloader/recovery and system structure.

What you should do is search for a custom kernel, that's what, or give more info about the tab (the info I listed in my last post) and I might be able to help.

Yes it does, try this first:
http://www.iroot.com/
and if that does not work try:
https://www.kingoapp.com/
Try both the APK and PC versions and this will install a Chinese root manager and some other Chinese apps, just use root uninstaller after installing SuperSU to remove all the Chinese bloatware.

Well I will guess you already replaced the chinese root manager with SuperSU and also used root uninstaller (from play store) to remove all the chinese apps, if not that's what you should do.
But really I can't answer what you want to do, you can do many things with root (but don't expect any custom ROM's or kernels for that thing as there are no sources, you'll just have to stick with the android version and ROM that is already on it).
Some things you can do though are: remove all the "kids" things from it and put apex or nova launcher on it, install xposed framework, perhaps install the CWM recovery for the version of RK chip in it to make backups before erasing any system files or just use flashfire.
