So i keep on getting this error when i'm trying to flash clockwork recovery. I'm on stock btw.
"Error while download from server. Please make sure that you have a stable internet connection, and that your SD card is inserted and has free space!"
I have a stable connection and my SD card is fine. So can anyone lend me the update.zip of the clockwork recovery?
found this

geez. Thanks man!
I had the same problem and installed the update.zip as per the instructions, but ROM manager will not detect that Clockwork recovery is installed and will not let me install a ROM. What can be done in this case? Clockwork recovery is correctly installed and works when I go into recovery mode. I am on stock Eclair 2.1.29 JFD.
If you can get to recovery by normal means you can flash any rom you want aslong as that update has been installed. Thats what I did. btw rom mananger was down thats why it was acting funny.
I see. So I can just boot into Clockwork Recovery and select "Install from zip" and that will start the ROM installation?
Thanks.
Once that update.zip has been installed It should take you to the green clockwork mod recovery.
You can then find the option that says install zip from sd. It will let you pick any zip file
For instance I Have bionix v.zip on my sd card in a folder called zip. I will navigate to that folder and select that zip file then confirm the flash.
Awesome! Thanks man, got it to work too! Was freaking out last night haha.
I was also. Just a quick note If you keep that zip file on the root of your internal sd card You can always flash that and it will give you access to the green recovery menu. I do that Now instead of installing the root update. Then I can automatically flash any rom I want.
Yeah, problem is I got wiped so my files and I didn't backed up that .zip. I thought there was something wrong with my phone.

i think i accidentally deleted the update.zip file i think cuz thats what the error said
but is there anyway where i can fix this or download it somewhere please and thank you
Just open rom manager, install cwr (top option), when done, reboot to recovery... If it's the stock recovery click on the reinstall packages... I think that's the name it uses. Only like 4 options to choose, so it should be obvious.

I am trying to install the new Obsidian based on froyo 2.2 with the Samsung Vibrant. I rooted it using the one click root and downloaded ROM manager. When I try to back up my current ROM the phone reboots and says E: Can't open /cache/update.zip (bad) Installation aborted.
Because of this I cannot install the Obsidian ZIP file because the same error message pops up.
redownload rom and dont use rom manager, it will erase your internal sd card. Use clockwork recovery and then flash a fresh downloaded obsidian rom

I use ROM Manager like 50 times a day and my SD card never gets wiped.
is clockwork recovery within ROM manager? So i click on Reboot into recovery or Flash ClockworkMod Recovery? Thanks for the help also.
Wait, is this your first time flashing a ROM? Walk us through what you've done so far.
I'm guessing you had your USB plugged in, and didn't get a good flash of clockwork. Unplug your USB, go into clockwork, and flash the latest version of clockwork. Then reboot, go back into clockwork, try to backup and see what you get
Here is what I did:
1. One-click root
2. Download ROM Manager from market
3. Downloaded Obsidian and placed it on my SD card via USB
4. Opened ROM Manager and clicked Backup current ROM, which is where i got the error message that /cache/update.zip could not be read
5. Tried to install obsidian by clicking Install ROM from SD Card and choosing the obsidian that I put on my SD card and I get the error saying /cache/update.zip could not be read (bad) installation aborted.
FIRST WRONG SECTION
notw thats out of the way, In Rom manager click reboot into recovery, then if you have blue text on your screen click reinstall packages, thenmanually pick thee rom to flash from the other (green text) recovery
PS WRONG SECTION
Iuse think free office. Navigate to download folder. Click the zip. Hit Clockworkmod recovery. Ok. Ok. Now let it do its thing. Enjoy. Personally I don't like it.. im back to fusion... didn't like lack of black. and double tap features... big down sides for me... and twiz.. so I'm back to fusion1.2... and LOVE IT! Only one to beat it is Bionix themselves and I'm waiting very patiently!
sgsV bionix.. If ya don't got it GET IT!

Was your USB mounted to your computer when you clicked "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in ROM Manager? That will cause the error you have.
If so, disconnect from the computer, reboot, launch ROM manager, flash clockworkmod, and then try to backup your current ROM again.

Yes this is my first time.. I have never really had the motivation to, but I want froyo really bad so I am trying to get this down. I don't really know what clockwork recovery is or how I get it, all I have is ROM Manager and a rooted Vibrant.

One in the same here brother. Read my posts before. I'll try to help you through here, but you are in the wrong section, and this post isn't long for this world. A couple tips for you:
1) Read up on these programs you are using. Thankfully you're dealing with a mostly unbrickable phone, but I don't think anyone here is looking forward to walking you through an Odin recovery. You can **** stuff up. Write that down on a piece of paper in front of you.
2) Read the forum guidelines. People will be a lot nicer if you post in the correct forum.
Ok, sorry for not posting in the appropriate forum. I think I got it and my mistake was not flashing clockwork because when I backup my current ROM I no longer get that error. Right now I am using Titanium Backup to backup my stuff and then I am going to try the Obsidian flash again.. but does the Titanium Backup save my text messages?

Good, good. A bad clockwork flash is the only thing I've ever seen cause that error message. At least you've given a good google reference for other people that mess that up.
I've never used Titanium backup for anything other than app backup, so I don't know about texts. I believe it can be done, but I don't know what to select. Maybe take a look in the market? I think there are some SMS backup apps there if that's all you're concerned about.
OP -
I had the exact same problem as you, and I tried everything. Surprisingly enough, what fixed it for me was how I copied the ROM zip file to the phone. When I mounted the phone to the computer and dragged and dropped, I got the error. I had tried copying the file at least 3 or 4 times this way, and I always got the error. The error went away when I decided to try an ADB push of the zip file to the Internal memory card. I still don't know why it fixed it for me, but it's worth a try.

Wrong section dude. But um when you said u only opened rom manager to press back up current rom?..if so you got that error cause the wrong update.zip is on the root of sd...go back to rom, manager and click flack cwm click allow when it asks for root,n then pick the vibrant one.
OP - Do not worry about backing up your current ROM. You are going to 2.2 and your ROM now is 2.1. IF you decide to go back to a 2.1 ROM flash an all new one (ie. Bionix Fusion or Final) that comes with a 2.1 Kernel. If you try to go to your backed up ROM though Rom manager without getting a new kernel you will soft brick your phone, and as you stated this is your first try, a soft brick can be a little scary. To be on the safe side delete your backup in your phone now so you won't forget and be tempted to go back to that old ROM without the proper kernel installed and ready to be flashed also in your phone. Just wanted throw that out there for ya!

Thread moved to Q&A.
Maybe it's a noob question, but after update to 2.2, how do I revert all the apps and games I have currently on Bionix 1.1. I can reinstall them, but what about save states? Any way to transfer that when update is done to Froyo, or we always need to start from scratch on every new update?
hey guys can you guys help me install this rom on my phone its aready rooted Eugene's Ginger Clone 2.2 gingerbread clone... please!!!
download
move to sdcard/
go to recovery
make backup
flash rom (install zip from sd)
reboot
First install his rom then connect your phone to your computer and mount. Then put the rom in the internel SD card the one without avatar. Don't rename the file. Then boot into recovery and reinstall packages twice. Then you will be in clockwork wipe factory reset and cache. Then go to install zip from SD card, then choose zip from SD card and find the rom. Don't forget to backup your apparently.

What is the point of making a backup? I mean, you can always go to stock using odin and the JFD tar and pit.
Is backup just to save all your personal files, pics, music, etc?

I have heard this over and over. I only have one question that I could not find anywhere. Do you need to rename the "Ginger_Clone_Final_R2.zip" to update.zip? Everytime I reboot into recovery and try and get ti to install, I get the same message over and over; something to the effect of package not found. Thanks

you don't rename it. maybe your choosing the update zip from sd. it should be choose zip file from sd card then you choose the custom rom you're flashing.

Yea, thanks. I thought that was what I am supposed to do. I don't have that option though. When I reboot into recovery (through ROM Manager or on my own) I only have the STOCK recovery options. For some reason, the Clockworkmod options are not showing up. I noticed this about a month ago. I will have to try and figure that out first. Thanks again.

Have you flashed clockwork recovery from rom manager? If so, when you get into stock recovery just hit reinstall packages to get to cwm. You may have to do that twice to get it to work. If it still doesnt work try reflashing cwm from rom manager.

I had been doing everything right. I had to roll back to CWM version 2.5 (I think it is about 3 or 4 versions earlier than the current one). No wonder they have been making so many updates over the past few days. Well at any rate, I wanted to ensure I wasn't doing anything wrong. i have done it before, but for whatever reason (now known to be CWM) it just wasn't working. I got it fixed and now have 2.3. I will install my apps including Titanium Backup and report any problems. I hope there are none; from what it sounds like, I will probably not have any, but only time will tell. Thanks for posting and confirming that I was not losing my mind.

I can get into rcovery but I don't have the option to install from sd or make a backup. The options that I have are reboot, install packages, clear cache and there is on more I can't remember I don't have the phone with me. Install packages dies nothing but show that it can't find any update zip files. I think its not recognizeing my sd card. I have pics and music on my sd card and it works fine so I don't know what's going on.

Sounds like stock recovery. Did you download rom manager? Did you flash cwm recovery. If so reboot into recovery through rom manager
download ROM Manager, and click the first option, its like flash clockwork recovery, choose your device, and then it'll finish, then try going back there, and it should be in GREEN or something
Moved of: Samsung Vibrant > Vibrant General

I've done all of that. That's how I get in recovery. And its green writing. The weird thing is that I've been able to flash some roms before then I end up wanting to do something else so I use my backup and go back to stock. I did have some problems with the backup that I did and had to use odin to fix it. I then relized that I did not odin the update j16 file so I then did that. I've got the nero rom ready to go just can't get to the right recovery. I do have the clockwork recovery that I got with the rom manager.

Is there an "advanced" option?? If so go to that then you should see reboot recovery. Then you should see the install from SD card option. Also, try mounting your SD card to the computer. And try pulling out your battery while phone is still powered on.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If you are going into stock recovery after flashing CW Recovery from ROM Manager, you need to select "reinstall packages" in stock recovery (it may need to be selected twice). Then you'll go into CWM.
Also, don't delete the "update.zip" file on the root of your sd card...that's the CWM file, which is what is installing when you select reinstall packages.

Im going to give it another try when I get home. I've done the install packages but I get an error that it can't find somthing. But I will try doing it twice.

If u deleted the update.zip then that's y its not working.

I think my problem is with the update zip. I downloaded the new nero b4 and when I look in my files I see it but I can't open or do anything with it. But if I look in astro I see it and I can do something with it. So its something to do with the file app. Its changing it to something that I can't do anything with. I go into recovery and reianstall packages and it looks like its working but then says aborted.

Just giving a quick bump because I still cant get this to work.
Do I need to factory reset as well? If so, this is new to me, and I think it may be wise to include these details in the Kernel thread, as not everyone is 100% on these sorts of things.
Many thanks.

So when you boot into CWM recovery do you see the kernel .zip on your sd card?
Steps for installing pershoot's kernel.
Place file in root of SD card
Boot into CWM Recovery
select install zip from SD
choose kernel zip file
select yes
reboot
No need to wipe anything, should be a quick boot up.
