[Q] Droid X Keyboard - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So every Droid X keyboard I've tried doesn't work, basically. Does anyone out there have a working one that is compatible with Nonsensikal 16.1 or FroYo in general? I've been using an HTC keyboard and am getting bored of it, and loved the X's keyboard on my Eris before I rooted it...

Have you tried this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764021

Yeah, that was the most recent one I tried. Unless I'm doing something wrong, it won't work. I'm using Root Explorer to put both files in their respective directories, and that includes completely over writing the libjni_latinime.so in /system/lib. I reboot the phone, and there aren't any options that were there from before in the Language and Keyboards menu. And when I try to select the new keyboard, I get a force close error. Any ideas as to what may be going wrong?
Also, I extracted the .zip before I moved the files, in case that matters.
This is the one I would LOVE to get working, specifically the black/red special one in the third post. Although its SUPPOSED to work with FroYo, I can't seem to get this to work either...

Not real sure.. haven't tried it myself but it should work.

Maybe I'll try uninstalling the stock keyboard first. I would need to remove LatinIME.apk, LatimImeTutorial.apk, and libjni_latinime.so, right? Anything else?

Yep, you need to remove the apk. The lib will overwrite, but might as well delete.
"roll your own" froyo-eris v. √-1

Okay so I got the one by Kaos to work. I had to delete the keyboard files from the /system/app and /system/lib. Its amazing! Only problem is that the font on the keys is incredibly small, and that seems to be a problem with CM6. I don't think I mind it so much, I can still see the letters and stuff...but we'll see. Any fixes for this that you know of in the mean time?
Also note: The keyboards in the link that I posted, they don't work. Based on the devices in the thread they're from they're only meant to work on hi res devices =[ oh well.

anyone have the stock eris keyboard? apk

ive search around the forums and all. don't want the custom one. just wanted the stock android version with a compact qwerty version on it. i installed a custom from for my sister inlaw but she doesn't wanna get used to the keyboard keyboard and just wanted that compart qwerty. please help anyone i can't find that darn thing.
It looks like the "stock" one isn't working very well with a few ROMs (Froyo/Cyanogen-based ones, that is) and you have to go the "custom" route. You can make it stock-looking though.
is that the same as a vanilla keyboard? cause evil rom i think has one but its a vanilla keyboard wasn't sure if it has a compact qwerty option you can do on it.

Just a guess, but you probably need the lib file for it also.
Sent from my FroShedYo.V6 using XDA App
no lib should be required (maybe libt9.so) for the keyboard... but, if you want to use it, you will need both the HTC_IME.apk file and the Clicker.apk file (they are tied together).
that being said, i'm not sure how HTC has (if at all) the keyboard tied into framework, etc (i.e., not sure how well it works on a non-sense ROM).
i have zipped up all three files (including the libt9.so) file for you and attached to this post.
the two apk files will need to be in /system/app and the lib in /system/lib
reboot, and test - please keep in mind that i did not try this... as i've used the jonasl keyboard with every ROM and actually remove the stock keyboard. i would try WITHOUT the lib first, and if it doesn't work, try with. either way, BE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD NAND BACKUP BEFORE DOING ANYTHING
(still not sure why this one is not an option for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416 - only "real" difference to the "average" user would be the addition of the mic and smileys... neither of which affect the usability in a negative way. in fact, they make the "stock" keyboard MUCH better).
good luck!
The HTC keyboard works just fine on non-Sense ROMs.

[App] Thumb Keyboard Now Working Well for NC

UPDATE: 4/30/11
Thumb KB 4.0, Beta 3.1 is now available at the following location: http://thumb4beta.blogspot.com/
If you have Thumb KB already installed from the Market, you must uninstall that version first before installing the new beta.
Some very nice changes so far....enjoy!
Thanks to Paul @ Beansoft for his very hard work on this new version!!
------------------------------------------------------------
Original Post:
I have been working with Paul, developer of the Thumb Keyboard (TKB) app, over the last couple of weeks to fine-tune the various layouts available on the TKB for the NookColor.
As of today, we tested the various layouts and they are working great! No longer does the bottom row disappear like it does with the current version available in the Market. A new version, with the new enhancements for the NC, should be available tomorrow.
This is great news, as this keyboard is incredibly easy, intuitive, and flexible to use on my NC. Appelflap is a very responsive dev and is doing a great job in supporting the NC community with these recent changes to his app.
A big thanks goes out to him for his patience with my testing and for a great app that makes typing on my NC so much better.
[My NC: Rooted, running v1.1.0r2 by Decad3nce, OC'd using 1.1Ghz OMAP3630 by Dalingrin]
I'm really looking forward to this, I have big fingers so I'm "all thumbs" to start with.
Went to market and picked it up but could not figure out how to enable it in the nook. Looks like an interesting concept. Will buy again but can you tell me how to activate it? Refunded until then.

I second that. I bought it too but have no clue how to get it to show up i the list of keyboards. I've done everything from renaming the zip to apk, renaming the latin ime and even copying the zip and the apk to system still to no avail. I see theres going to be an update tomorrow hopefully it fixes the the installation issue but if not can anyone who has gotten this to work please offer a solution.

the apk that you have to move to system/app (as with other keyboards) is actually located in data/app-private. move that guy over and maybe change permissions. its been a while but i think thats how i got this working.
edit: after doing that, i also had to reinstall by clicking on the apk that i moved. it then showed up as a selectable keyboard.

This is what I did to finally get it working. It took me a very long time to get this keyboard recognized in the NookColor Tools as an optional keyboard, but here is what I did:
1) Backing up the Thumb KB on my Droid X using "My Backup Pro" app
2) Transferred the newly created backup from my DX to my NC
3) Used Root Explorer to go into the backup file and and copied the .apk to /System/App
4) From within Root Explorer, installed the .apk (I was already mounted as R/W)
I could just not get it installed from the Market, for whatever reason...even after copying the .apk from /Data/App-private to /System/App.
As a side note, it does seem like renaming the LatinIME.apk in /system/app was something I tried and worked, in addition to what I performed above. I have since renamed that file back and I still have the Thumb KB in my menu option.
Let me know if this works, realizing that backing up from another device may not be possible for everyone.
when you tried copying the apk from data/app-private, did you then install by clicking on the apk while it was in system/app? that was the key point for me.

After copying the .apk to the /system/app folder, I did run the installer directly from within Root Explorer and this worked for me.
I was also helping the Dev out and testing this, and it works great. I did do a restart after I moved the .apk to the system/app folder. Using this keyboard makes a lot more sense for a tablet than the other keyboards. I can type faster now without having to put down the Nook, or feel like I going to drop it on accident.
Been looking forward to seeing the "not completely compatible with Nook" note go away. Thanks for the heads-up. =)
This worked for me

I don't know what happened but somehow I had my order cancelled (must have hit something somewhere along the line). I downloaded from the market again and it is working.

Same issues as above. Great idea though. Refunded until confirmed it can install from market with no tinckering.
Thanks 360Razir for helping me out by testing the keyboard on the NC!
For people with a parser error: do you rename the apk when copying it over? Renaming could be the source of the parsing problem.
Furthermore I turned off copy protection on the market. This should reduce the installation hassle a bit.
I'm planning to make a installer for (rooted) NCs. Can someone describe the exact steps that have to be taken to install TKB on a NC? That would be great (please use the non protected app on the market as the starting point of the description)
One minor issue I noticed; when using the 7" symbol/numeric keyboard in portrait, when I press the ., key, it enters a period in the text box as it should, but the key confirmation popup displays a 0 .

And renaming my current blurhome to blurhome.apk.bak causes forcecloses and i have to battery pull
its obviously beyond me because even when i do get it to recognize, it says This is not a blur device
i even setup motoblur and still no go
i also left my blurhome.apk there as well.. Still no go
this droid 3 blurhome should just work . But obviously its missing some dependiencies. If anyone can figure it out let me know
i have the whole rom deodexed so i can pull any file necessary

Its dependency is in the framework mirror service.jar or something very similar however you have to modify the jar to mimic a blur device in order to use it

I haven't tried it but I have a strong feeling it will work. That is how apps check what phone they're on. I used Swype on a phone running CM7 before by changing the build.prop to make it think it was an LG Optimus S (it WAS an Optimus S, but they changed the model and name in CM7).
Yeah I remember that swype problem on my evo. Took me a bit to find a working version.

Yeah as long as you have the correct version (MDPI, HDPI) and change the build.prop to a phone that has Swype pre-installed, you're good to go.
tried the build prop edit, still a no go. Maybe I did something wrong??
Can you post a build.prop from the Droid 3 and the Photon? I'll edit the Photon one and upload it back for ya.
here...i'll take the liberty of uploading the build props for you....i'm just as interested in getting this working as everyone else
Try this build.prop. Make sure you don't rename it or anything. If it doesn't work let me know because there is 1 more change that may affect it.

Change Keyboard

I love my new Nook Tablet after sideloading all of my favorite apps...the only thing that I haven't had success with is changing to a third party keyboard. I've downloaded the Thumb Keyboard from Amazon, installed it and see it running, I just can't activate it in the Nook settings. Anyone else have success with this?
I have had no success either. I tried swiftkey and, after downloading the language files, once I try to enable it just force closes. It seems the settings menu has completely removed the option to chose which keyboard you want.
Although (and this may be a long shot), I have an idea. I cant test it right now as my nook is dead and I left the charger at work >.<. Anyway, here is my idea:
root the NT
using a root file manager go to /system/apps
locate the keyboard apk and copy the name. (I don't know if case matters but I would just copy it exactly as it appears)
rename the apk after copying the name to something like (keyboard).apk1
now locate the /data/app folder
locate your keyboard app of choice and rename it to whatever your default keyboard is named
move the file to /system/apps
reboot tablet and see if the keyboard you downloaded sticks.
If this doesn't work, that is why we just renamed the origonal apk. Basically, go back into your file manager app and delete the apk for the 3rd party keyboard then delete the 1 after the stock and reboot and your device should be fine.
This works just fine on my phone (I know it's a completely different animal). If nobody is willing to try it, I will today while I'm at work and post back if it works.

Bah, this method does not work. I didn't snap that my phone had swiftkey enabled already so the LatinIME.apk being renamed had no effect on the device functions. On the nook, I rooted it and then renamed LatinIME.apk to LatinIME.apk1...which means no more keyboard so I cant rename swiftkey. In my infinite wisdom I tried to master reset (using wipe/deregister device in settings). Apparently this does not completely revert to defaults but just wipes user data...so now I cannot login to my B&N account due to no keyboard!
So...DO NOT DO THIS! >.<
Alternatively...once you have root you can push the renamed swiftkey app (or whatever keyboard app) to /system/apps and that MIGHT work...All I know is, looks like I'm returning my device as I cannot do anything with it
Turn off the device. Hold down the N key and Power it back on to do a factory reset.

I actually figured that out just messing around trying to find a hard button reset...this doesn't work either. Apparently a factory reset only resets the factory settings but does not restore the rom to default itself...weird.
hmmm...does anyone know if there is a way to get to adb shell with the device off? or without being able to get into settings...yeah...long shot lol

Debugging gets disabled after each boot, so no ADB. I think you are screwed. Perhaps this is a sign that you need to go into a B&N and have them "fix" your tablet. When they pop the secret SD card into it, grab the tablet and RUN.
I found in an old Nook Color thread that the file is saved as com.beansoft.keyboardplus.zip in /data/app.
I had hoped to do this without having to root my NT...love to be able to sideload apps but just don't want to hassle with rooting it.
At this point I think I'll just be sticking to the stock keyboard since it sounds like you have to install the apk in /system/app for it to have a shot of working anyway.
i think kfmethod can work if android versions is same
I have not figured a way to change which keyboard is being used, but I was able to find a way to change to different themes of the B&N Stock Keyboard.
Here's how:
1) Download/Install Anycut from the Android Market
2) Open Anycut
3) Select New Shortcut
4) Select Activity
5) Scroll down until you see Android keyboard Debug settings, choose this
6) Go to your homescreen and click on the newly created shortcut
7) Select Keyboard Theme
8) Enjoy!
I'm rooted and I'm not sure if that changes things or not, perhaps someone can test it out for me?

Nook Tablet SIP Keyboard Switching without rooting
I too am desperate for my Nook Tablet SIP Keyboard to be switchable without rooting. I was previously using windows mobile where you have CTRL+x,c,v,b,u,i,e,y,z, etc -- i used it CONSTANTLY to undo, redo, and most importanly: being able to cut, copy, and paste info form fields.
This is driving me nuts that the standard SIP on a tablet doesn't have such basic features.
I purchased Thumb Board from Amazon (Amazon says it's compatible with Nook Tablet) but I can't execute it... bummer.
After using the hacker keyboard for a day, i found the keys a little too cramped for how fast i type. I ended up just changing the theme to stone and i like it. Im much more accurate with it as well.

Im using a stock evo lte (not rooted). The swype that comes pre loaded on this phone sucks. It always messes up what word in trying to swype and it constantly stops working mid text forcing me to switch inputs.
Is there a way I can get the swype beta on here? I had it on my OG evo and it was awesome.
Not unless you root. Have you tried Tue speed vs accuracy setting?

Thanks, I actually forgot about that setting. I just put it a little more towards "accuracy". Lets see if that helps.

Mine works fine, never stopped working on my phone.. I did notice it takes a while for it to figure out some words, but now works as good as beta for me...

I am rooted, but had no luck getting Swype beta to load. when running the installer, it says you can't lord it over pee installed version. Tried deleting files using root explorer and could get installer to run, but hung forever on licensing screen.
Would love to hear from someone that has gotten this to work. I agree that the stock version is not anywhere near a good as the beta I had on my evo 4g.

Did you delete all of the files? I remember on the old evo uninstalling it wasn't enough, I had to go into root explorer and delete 2(I think) additional files manually in order to get the beta to install.
I called HTC earlier today and logged the complaint with them. They said their notes get reviewed every week and even HTC in Taiwan reviews them. Hopefully if enough people complain we can get them to include a better version in a future software update.(wishful thinking lol). If someone gets the beta to install, I might just have to root.

I deleted the Swype.apk and even tracked down any file with the word Swype in in it, deleting files in lib and davlik cache as well. Still no joy.
Also tried deleting files thru titanium and restoring from backup, no joy there either. Either I am doing something wrong procedurally or there is a trick I am not smart enough to figure out.

I'm rooted and I'm also trying to replace the pre-loaded Swype with the Beta (the Beta version has over 50 languages while the pre-loaded version has only two, with no option to add more). I tried using Titanium to uninstall the Swype system app and delete all of the additional Swype files using Root Explorer. No luck. The Swype Installer gives me a "parse error" when I try to download the Beta.
This might push me to try a full root and install a custom rom. I need a version of Swype with an Arabic keyboard (especially since Google inexplicably removed the ability to change input methods by long-pressing in a text field).

A-ha! I found a pretty good workaround. There's a flashable APK of the latest version of the Swype Beta here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?l5brukdug885u6u
If you clean out the Swype system app, the flashable apk should install with no problems. Then you can download additional languages or use whatever functionality of Beta that might be missing from the pre-loaded version.
In case nobody was aware, the stock HTC Sense Keyboard has a "trace keyboard" option that behaves like Swype. Works well for me...

Yeah but it's not as good and doesn't support as many languages as Swype Beta does. It's noticeably less accurate than Swype.

Yea thats what I switch to when my swype stops working.I dont like it as much.
Parse error is cause you changed r/w back to r/o too soon. Go into root explorer, go to the correct folder, change to r/w, delete Swype, install through Swype installer, change back to r/o in root explorer. It's so easy to get this working, I did it weeks ago.
Find my post about this from the other week, it has better directions.
Swyped from my eVo
Swype stops working for me when I am tapping the letters vice swyping when entering the letters:
si
It will freeze the phone for a moment, then drops the keyboard. If I attempt to type, it will instantly delete what I am trying to type.
I have to back out of app, and then go back in to type.
This doesn't always happen. Like now, multiple apps and I am able to type all sorts of words that begin with the letters si - but at some point, it will start messing up, and everytime I type si in it was do this odd behaviour.
I can Swype si words no problems.
I was wondering if it was the app thinking I was typing in the Spanish word Si.
shrug
Anyway - it's annoying.

This exact same thing is why I made this thread. It happens way too often. I havent been able to narrow it down to a single instance like you did but I will pay more attention when it happens the next time.
EDIT: It happened once today and I was swyping the word "so". Its similar to yuor problem with "si" except I was swyping and not typing

Can you post a link to your other post? I tried this instruction and got the measure that I cannot install on a phone with Swype pre installed.

Did you do it on an EVO LTE or on your EVO 3D? Please dont post info here that you have not specifically tested on our device. They dont all work the same.
The Sense Keyboard is much better than the Swype that comes with the phone.
