As the title says so,I would like to clear my dalvik cache as I heard it will make my phone run smoother.I will try to clear it from custom recovery. Is that safe? Because the last time I did it this way,it was stuck at the Android sign.Currently runninng megatron. Is my method wrong or I didn't wait long enough at the boot menu?
You can't completely clear the cache. It will be recreated on boot, which explains why the Android logo part took so long
So if I just wait a little longer at the boot screen, most of the cache will be cleared?

Hehe no.When u clear dalvik/cache the booting faze takes longer because it creates another cache(i hope i explained myself good).
So...should I clear my dalvik cache?
No. Once the cache is recreated, it will almost be as if nothing was ever deleted. And I don't think it will increase performance of your apps either
Oh,ok thanks for the advice!

Since i had to reflash my phone at low battery (under 15%) after messing around with some framework apks (one wasnt compatible with litening rom im using it seams) ive noticed a faster battery drain, so i would like to know how to reset battery stats (if there is a way like deleting a single file like with I9000 maby)?
And id like to know if someone can explain in short what all i can wipe to make sure the phone is as clean as it can be to start over (factory reset, then i heard about some cache, dalvik cache...)?
Anyone know this?

restart your phone in recovery mode
when phone is off press and hold the volume up the power button and home button and when the phone starts release the power.
In a few seconds the menu will appear
So wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition will also reset battery stats?
I hoped i wouldnt have to resort to that becouse i have to setup everything again then... i hoped there would be a single file i could delete like with the SGS...
And can someone tell me if i should wipe the dalvik cache after i flashed a few roms and how id do that?

wipe battery stats is in the advanced menu of cwm if you didn't find it
Since i dont have CWM on litening 1.0 i couldnt use that.
However battery calibration app did it for me and i managed to find the file too in:
/data/system/batterystats.bin .
Can someone just tell me now if i ever want to completely clear the phone, besides doing wipe memory/factory reset+wipe cache how do i wipe dalvik cache?
CWM wipe dalvik cache .

I do not have CWM... any other way?
Hello, I just rooted, and then tried to flash the latest nightly onto my P500H from Koodo.
Now whenever I boot, it's just stuck in the spinning arrow. At first it resets the boot but after 1 or 2 tries the arrow will just get stuck.
I can get into clockworkmod recovery, but there is error message saying: Bad boot message "recovery".
Now, first time I did this I didn't wipe cache partition, but then I did wipe it but same thing happens.
Any ideas?
Did you wipe Data?

When you change ROM or kernel, you have to wipe, at least, cache and dalvik cache.
Since I wipe data most of the times, I don't know if Gingerbread 2.3.7 can handle data from 2.3.3, so I would recommend you to try first wiping the 2 caches I mentioned then, if unsuccessful, wipe data.
BTW, this 'bad boot' message on recovery is the same to everyone. I'm no technician on the subject, but you can simply ignore it.
No I only wiped cache partition.
should I also do wipe data/factory reset?

First you try wiping only cache and dalvik cache. Then, if you're still stuck, you try wiping data.

I just wiped all of it and now it boots thanks a lot all.
this is what I do when I flash roms and never have problems, wipe dalivk cache, format cache, wipe data and system in that order...works for me maybe it will work for you
hi, I'm going to install new rom on my phone, but before I do that, it asks me to wipe date/fectory reset. I understand that part, but do I need to wipe cache partition too??
what exactly does it do?? is it safer to do it???
Cache Partition
wipe data/factory reset will wipe all user data on the device as well as cache. Doing this will leave your phone in the state it was in when you bought it.
wipe cache partition on the other hand wipes the cache partition of the device to clear all the data accumulated there over use.
I think if you want to start building your phone all over again, like a fresh start you could wipe cache partition too.
Nevertheless, I'd suggest you check-up with on of the more experienced developers and see if they second my opinion.
yep, wipe all of it when installing a new rom..
basic flashing 101...
The collective roms format cache and system themselves before installing everything. Only thing needed for our roms is to wipe data/factory reset.
its never a bad idea, especially for n00bs, to get used to a regime of the following:
format system
factory wipe (data /cache/ dalvik)
wipe batttery stats
then flash..
coming from 3 previous android phones, (2 htc, one sammy), as long as I followed this pattern, I never had issues, and, I am sure I have flashed my phone several hundred,(if not thousands) of times..
I ALWAYS perform the following steps when flashing new roms:
1. Nandroid backup
2. Wipe data/factory reset (x3)
3. Wipe cache partition (x3)
4. Wipe Dalvik cache (x3) (found under the "advanced" menu)
Sometimes i even go through the wipe cycle once after i finish, just for good measure!
...happy flashing!!

Its not necessary to do each three times, once is fine.
What you want to do is the wipe(s), then install your rom and let the rom boot. I have had numerous problems with wiping any data AFTER installing a rom but before a full boot into the rom. So basically, I do the wipe(s), then install the rom (WITHOUT rebooting), reboot and let the rom fully boot and you wont have any problems.
Oh, and my understanding is, if you do a factory reset in CWM, it is not necessary to wipe anything else as a factory reset also does the Davlik cache and cache partition, but not only does it not hurt to wipe all three just in case, a developer can feel free to correct me if Im wrong on this point.

I've flashed multiple roms onto 4 different phones and a tablet in the last 3 days (Captivate, SII, Skyrocket, Note, Xoom), and every guide except the one for the Xoom recommended at least 2 wipes of each (cache partition and dalvik, most in addition to factory). factory wipes are not always necessary, but unless the developer specifies that, it is always safest to just do the wipe. it definitely doesn't hurt.
it takes about an extra 30 seconds, with no risk, and lots of reward.
I dunno, Ive started seeing this come up alot in the last couple of months and Im not sure why. I guess it doesnt hurt to do it all 3 times but it makes no difference whether you do it once or three times.
this is an electronic device, its NOT your butt; one wipe does the job..
if you'll sleep better by doing multiples, knock your sox off, but, absolutely not needed, regardless of what you have read..
I was flashing CM9 from CM7 on my Motorola Defy, botched it up intially due to a slip of my finger which led to me to Clear the cache first. But then I restarted the entire process by Clearing Data -> Installing -> Flashing Kernel and so on...
But when I tried to clear the Dalvik Cache, the phone didn't delete it. It didn't give me a message that it wiped the cache, but it didn't say otherwise either. This led me to believe that the cache just didn't exist anymore.
As a result, I'm unable to install apps - Says there is no memory and I need to make more. Also, everytime the phone comes on is treated as the first time. It takes me through the whole process of Setting up an account and everything. This has rendered my phone obsolete.
Please help me!
Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Solved, reflashed the stock SBF. But is this the only solution? :O
Have you tried doing a clean install?
Honestly, any time you get issues like this where the phone gets stuck (either in a boot loop or resetting your settings every boot, etc.) it's best to just wipe/factory reset and re-flash everything.
This is also why it's important to make backups so that if something does go wrong when flashing, you can just restore and be good to go.
If by a clean install you mean starting from wiping data, flashing the ROM on again and going on to clear cache and dalvik cache; Yes I did that. But I'm unable to clear the cache.
I ought to have created a backup, didn't.
So how can I go about fixing this issue?

A clean install seems like the main thing to do (again). If you want, you could try going back to stock.
Installing again didn't do the job. Still can't wipe Dalvik Cache and the Setting still reset on every boot.
The chief problem I have with this is that I'm in India whereas the stock baseband is Europe. So to change it I've to reboot and can't do that because it resets every boot. @[email protected]
Is it a problem with the Kernel?
I'll go back to stock, but it seems a bit complex and I'm afraid I'll brick my phone. :'(
EDIT: Felt it was important to mention that the boot screen still shows CM7.1 and not CM9
I have a similiar problem.
Everytime I choose clear Dalvik men, it looks like he freezes for about a second or two. Then you see the 'menu' no - no - no - no - yes, clear dalvik memory - no - no - no (or something like that) pop up for half a second, and then it is gone. Is this a problem in CWM? Or is it in my phone?
I have a similar problem too! When I hit 'clear dalvik cache', the CWM screen just flashed once and nothing happened, and nothing says 'cleared dalvik cache' or similar...
Me too , how to solve it? Can anyone help? Mine is samsung gio
I have an issue similar to yours with my tablet (samsung galaxy tab 4 10.1 or SM-T430NU) in which it doesn't mount /data and it doesn't let me wipe to factory. Still haven't found how to fix this.
I'm all ready to flash a custom rom on my device and came across this: How To Load Custom ROM on Your Android Device (After Using the Revolutionary Method), ( <---- type this link into google apparently im not allowed to post outside links so just type it in to google) however no where in the instructions is he wiping the cache partition or dalvik cache, I've heard from most people if you don't wipe the cache you could end up with a phone eating a bowl of boot loops, or having a paperweight, so is he wrong or is it not important, please explain?

"Wipe data/factory reset" will clear both your cache and dalvik cache. You don't have to do it separately.
