Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but I did a search and couldn't find anything on it. I'd like to get a docking station, but more importantly I would like to have a cable that has HDMI out. This would be "just a cable", and I'd like it to not go through a dock. The reason is for travel. I can handle wrapping up a cable and stuffing it in a suitcase or something, but I don't want to lug a docking station around.
Anyone know if there's "just a cable" for this thing yet? Thanks.
I have seen this come up before and as I recall nobody knew of one.
Do you realize how small the dock is? It's < 5" long by 3" deep by 2" tall - very compact. Weighs a bit more than the stock power adapter, mostly because they added ballast for stability. It is very portable.
My recommendation: buy a dock and forget about obscure cables that may never exist.
If you check out the original thread covering the Zpad Docks you'll see that itSteve has been passing on details of the pin-outs to someone who was looking into making an HDMI cable. I haven't seen a conclusion to this yet, but if one does become available I'm sure you'll see it make a splash in this forum.

Correct, that would be huge. BUT, there were questions in regards to it needing power to that port and people were unsure if one could be made. I would LOVE to see that tho.

I personally would prefer a cable over a dock. I would only use it for watching movies on my LCD Tv. Wow one more post and I will ascend to another plane!

Yeah I would prefer a cable to a dock as well
Can anyone link to the pin-out for the connector? Also, does anyone know if the connector is a standard type that could be ordered form a component supplier?

Use Search... I and others have posted much on this before. If there was a quick viable solution, the forum will be screaming with it as soon as it appears. Not any time soon unfortunately.
Power needed for HDMI?
I've noticed that without the power plugged into the dock, neither the HDMI nor the ethernet ports work. Wouldn't such a cable then need to supply power as well?
This would most certainly be a huge benefit. I plan on using my GTab for business as well as work. Would be great if a simple cable was available as opposed to the dock. I know the dock is small, but the inconvenience is still there.
There are times I have 15 minutes to get setup and present to potential clients. If I could just plugin a cable, it would be golden!!

Nope but here is a thread with someone in China who "says" they are working on it.

There was a post buried in one of the threads, that stated it's the same connector that apple uses. I will confirm this weekend.

Very interesting! Would of just flew by me in that aspect. If this is true, then we can potentially use the ipod to hdmi port that was made for the 4th gen ipods and iphones. Let me know how that turns out. We probably have to create drivers for it though.
"The Viewsonic Tablet also has a 30 pin iPod like connector on the bottom that's used for -- well, nothing at the moment. There is not even any associated cable in the box. It's not actually iPod/iPad compatible, and very sadly, it is not the new PDMI standard. Theoretically, Viewsonic will be coming out with cables and docks that break this connector out into HDMI, charging, USB, etc. Again, it's only theoretical at the moment, but the G-Tablet should be able to crank 720p HD Video out that port. Also seen at the left of the unit in the following picture is the tiny hole for the microphone."
According to
w w w . linuxslate . o r g/Review_Viewsonic_G-Tablet_Android_Tablet.html
**EDIT**
Checked and the ipod version is 30 pin also.... sooooooo i wonder if they line up with the ipod version. The above is probably stating that this has no drivers as of yet, but doesnt mean that devs cant attach a kernal that enables whatever pin to do whatever.
Or is there a certain suit that has to follow? like pin 1 (+ hdmi power) or whatever. Thanks

Even if the connector fits, I'll bet big money the pinout is completely different. No big deal, I just need to find the mating connector. I can make a cable (would have to put an active chip in it to get HDMI output and find power on the connector).
People with a sansa player cable claim it fits, but I wasted $20 on a "sansa break out cable"from a company called Kinetica, but it does not fit......but it fits the I pad.....I told them about it and they claim it is different than than the I pad connector....I tried......
A really quick eyeball inspection seems to show the connector to be *very* similar to the apple docking connector. I'm kind of half-heartedly trying to fidget and see how the plug is modded to fit.
But above all else, I'm no expert. Just someone who wants to see if the plug can be tricked into fitting without wrecking my gtab.

I have seen a lot of discussion about docking stations and I was wondering how many of you X10 users want/need one. This is a rather neglected market from the manufacturers and it seems not many people use docking stations.
I for one cannot go without one anymore. I used to be sceptical, but the convenience of having your phone upright next to your PC (for example) dispalying all sorts of useful info and getting charged is a must. Especially if the station has a socket for a spare battery.
Thoughts?
I want one on my bed table as a charging station/ alarmclock
How many X10 user are there (25/03/10)?!
I would probably buy one, if it was cheap.
I looked at the HTC docking station which was around £20 and though nah.
A docking station is basically just a holder - like a slot in your table. Waste of money IMO, if you've already got a charger.
It's not a shaver or a toothbrush!
But the usb connector is on the top of the phone... so i think there will not be a docking station...

I don't mind connecting a top piece manually as long as there is a cradle for the phone in a standing position...
Or something like this? in landscape, so is can be a photoframe and clock in one(app). Calling by external speaker.

Id want a docking! I use them all the time. At the office Im only using bluetooth anyway, so Its nice just having the phone standing, so I can see whos calling.
Also great to see time, weather whatever just in front of you!
Im almost embaressed to admit it but I use a small piece of velcro on my phone and in several places it habituates, my desk, nightstand, car. Feels like slumming but remarkably functional and I actually went back to this from a docking station because I prefer it.
Both the Droid and Nexus One have pretty nice docking stations, lets hope Sony puts out something nice. As for the velco idea... interesting, but I would never do that to my desk or my phone.
Hardly notice the little bit of velcro that is on the phone and in the other places not at all. Its all about placement man, I would bet you wouldnt see any of them unless pointed out to you. Most folks are going to see this solution as getto, just pointing out an alternative that is surprisingly effective. Those looking for the gucci dock definetly wouldnt be happy.

Lol'd @ gucci dock .
It's a nice solution, especially for phones that don't have docking stations... or the ones available are ugly/unfunctional.
I wouldn't do it, becasuse I hate the idea, but still +1 for ingenuity.
hopefully one will be released soon! i wanna buy one! maybe a white station for a black x10??
i remember when all pda's and pdaphones used to come with a cradle lol. it is useful, and its a pity if you want one nowadays you have to buy them for ridiculous prices like 40 dollars or something.
i dont think the xperia has any other connectors other than the microUSB, unlike the nexus one which has those cleverly camoflaged contacts.
Well, there's somthin like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPII.dll?ViewItem&item=390163600318
Holder and USB hub, so could be connected with a cable to charge and sync.
This is more or less just a concept. but i think that it could work, and look nice aswell. And it should not be too hard to make one.
I am sorry if the 3D doesn't look that good, but I did just make it rather quickly.. so the textures looks kinda messed up etc.
17 minutes left until I can go to bed.. yey..
i was thinking last night, and just because the charger is on the top that doesn't mean a dock won't work. if there was a dock that the phone could sit sideways in, and an app that waited in the background and detected when the phone was docked (plugged into the usb port and landscape) it could display a landscape digital clock screen, with little icons for missed calls and texts etc...
once my dissertation is handed in in a few months i might have a go at developping my first android app!

Well I think that it could work out with the design I posted 1/2 posts before yours.
With the docking part at the top. where you can "drag" it up and down. press it down when you have placed your phone there.
that way your phone won't fall out for some reason atleast.
I don't really see why it would tho but..
If you don't mind shopping at AliExpress ..
Lots of accessories (including the HDMI dock, clip case, official malata case, wall charger, cooling pads/stands) has appeared for individual sale (ranging $25~$50 shipped).
Here is the link,
Enjoy.
new arrival: Fuse case black/brown: $37
White/Black clip case $58
Custom case with BT keyboard $85
Official case $38
Official wall adapter $23
Cooling pad with built in USB hub $40
Screen protector $14
HDMI docking station $48
HDMI cable $37 (according to steve it doesn't work)
Car charger $28
The good thing is with these available for single purchases, expect lots of drop shippers to put them on ebay (that most potential shoppers would favor over AliExpress).

If it works, I will be ordering a dock AND a cable from you.
Can you please take a picture of the connector on the cable? I want to see if they installed all the pins (to break out all the other connections). It would be greatly appreciated.
If both of those work for me, three friends will then be buying a dock and a cable from you, each

You mean like he said in this thread 2 posts above yours?
I have seen a few threads around here where people are were asking about some good quality photos of the inside of the Malata Zpad dock that works for our gTablets.
Well, I had a dock that I thought was DOA, after taking it apart it turns out the weight had just come loose and pulled out the ribbon cable. Simple fix as it turns out.
While I had it apart I figured I would snap a few shots. Sorry I couldn't get too close up, I don't have a Macro lens.

I just got a new one as well. It's much smaller than I thought it would be, only about 5" across.
Great Picks very much appreciated!!!
I had a member PM me about taking the dock apart and do the repair on the ribbon cable. I wanted to post the info here so everyone can read it.
Take a look at this picture
See the 5 brass threaded inserts around the edge of the case? If you peel back the rubber pad at the bottom of the dock, there are 5 small screws at those locations.
I was lucky enough to have one of these on hand, purchased from focal price.
http://www.focalprice.com/detail_IPC04X.html
I used the long pry tool to pull back the rubber pad and remove the screws.
You can also see in this picture to the left and right of the tablet connector, where the ribbon cable starts, are two grey circles. This is where the mounts SHOULD be for the weight that is inside the dock. Malata for some reason only used these two small anchor points to mount the weight, so its pretty easy for them to break off.
I was able to take the plastic pieces where the weight screws in, glue them back in place by holding them with the tweezers included in the repair kit.
Once the weight is fixed you need to pull the grey bar out in front of the ribbon cable slot using the pry tool again. Slip the ribbon cable into the slot and push the grey back back up into place, this should secure the ribbon cable.
At this point you should be able to button the dock back up and have a working dock.
hey folks,
looking at the last set of pics, it looks like the ethernet chip has its own MAC. Just a long shot, but maybe network settings are preventing the dock from accessing the network. For example, I have MAC filtering enabled, and if I don't specifically add the MAC, my lights wont light up.
I am looking to get a dock, so i am doing a bit of research...
Is the MAC address found on the box or someplace in plain sight? I dont want to take the thing apart to get to the MAC.......(I will).

No, the only place I saw it was on the sticker once I opened the unit. You might talk to the devs here and see if one of the custom ROMS has a place to find it in the software.
I had no problem with my dock working if I booted the tablet once it was on the dock. Any standard router should be able to pick up the mac address of the dock.
Looks like next to the power socket, you might be able to solder on a 3.5mm jack...
Hi, does anybody know whether the lapdock 100 works with the atrix? because I am about to buy a lapdock and am attracted by the longevity and multi-compatibility of the lapdock 100 (and 500 too). Both for eventually reselling it or use it with a newer phone.
Thanks in advance!
No, the ports (micro-usb and mico-HDMI) are "upside down" compared to the latest iterations found on the Atrix 2, Bionic, and Razr. I'm sure someone will come up with a mod and post their instructions eventually.

They do, but if you look closely you'll see the ports are upside down and backwards, so just flipping the cable over won't work.
Look at the ports very closely. You should see that they are "upside down" as in the curvatures are opposite to each other. If you tried to turn the cable upside down then the ports would be reversed/ wrong side.
If you look at the cable provided you will notice that the usb and hdmi connections are combined making it impossible to plug into the OG Atrix.

But this is proof that Motorola sucks big time and this is another example of bad PR because of something so simple that could be avoided by using the same orientation/placement of the plugs.
I thought that the whole idea to get rid of the dock and use cables was to future-proof the lapdock so other Motorolas (with diferent shapes and sizes) could use it. BUT NOOOOOO Moto has to make things hard for consumers!
Too bad Motorola is the only one at the moment with Webtop environment, otherwise I would have dumped them already!
In any case, if you are an Atrix 4G user, you might like the original Lapdock better like myself.

I completely agree. I have come to resent Motorola more for their business/sales decisions rather than their actual products. I feel they make some of the best handsets (even if they do run Blur) but they are more interested in appealing to business/corporate users. That is exactly what Blackberry did for the longest time and look where that got them.

it sucks true, but it means that OG lapdocks will go down in price and since there really isn't much difference (save for the larger screen) having the super slim OG lapdock is actually a plus IMO
It's just a matter of making an adapter cable with the ports in the right position. It's not that big of a deal if the ports are switched. It will happen eventually, possibly even from Motorola.
They are made for the newer generation of Motorola Android Devices.
I am using the Photon, (powered by Sprint, the Now Network.)
This lapdock will work for me.
Don't fret, if someone figures out how to open the thing without breaking it, there will be a guide, it is possible.
We were able to modify your dock to get it to work on the Photon.

Put an ad on craigslist looking for broken phones. Then just take the first one that has a micro hdmi in it and bust out the soldering iron.
Simple Solution?
If there is room enough, why not just use two cords; a USB and a micro HDMI?
Wouldn't that do the same thing? Could even electric tape them together at intervals for a neater appearance.
If there is some reason why this couldn't work, please let me know.
By the same token, couldn't I use two cords going from my Razr and plug them into an Atrix lapdock?
I would love those female plugs so I can use my phone as a webcam for skype. This is either for this or original lapdock. We wont have to worry about the 500.

No. The hdmi cable doesn't have micro connectors on both ends. Also not sure they make micro-usb extension cables.
Maybe more than two
I looked online and saw some connecters of both sorts, so maybe with enough trips to the drawing board, say micro to reg to double ended then reg back to mini. Convoluted, yes, but I think it could be done. Esp. considering what the dock already cost.
Elusive white whale ( mini female HDMI)
On one site ( moderater won't allow me to post URL) I found a HDMI (type A) male to Mini-HDMI (type c) female adapter. That w/ HDMI (type A) female to Mini-HDMI (type c) male cord (easily found) should take care of the HDMI part of the problem. Also another ( moderater won't allow me to post URL) has both adapters [mini fem to lg male and lg female to mini male] at $9.50 a pop.
Haven't addressed the mini USB part of the connection but that I'll leave that for another day or person.
Has anyone come across a good Nexus 6 Desk Dock yet? I am a developer and like connecting my phone to my computer on a dock when I program so I can send an app to the device without the cables getting in the way or touching the phone. I had one for my Note II and while it looked crappy, it got the job done. I don't need anything fancy, Universal works, too as long as the phone is in portrait mode and the cable can be reversed.
I came across this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MUHUCBI/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p107_d0_i3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1AD2M7P2BPSP2AG056PN&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=1970559082&pf_rd_i=desktop
I think I'd like to get something a little more secure, but this would probably work well for me anyways.
Sorry... *Not Qi... Long day. Tired and mixed up the wireless techs in my typing...

Connector isn't facing the right way. Its not going to work with Nexus or HTX One. Thanks though.. That's on the right track!
I JUST ordered one on amazon. It's supposed to be really good and the looks are exactly what I was searching for. It's called Bracketron Nanotek Stand. Mine's the aluminum silver version. Weird how we are both thinking the same thing even though I have never really thought of getting one for any device before.
I found what I'm looking for... but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I guess the technical term is cradle.

Since it was posted on their site January 6th, I guess it hasn't made it out to retailers yet. The sell a universal one for the M8 that would work with our phones, but I'd rather get something that supports the device on the sides as well.
This dock is perfect! Has anyone been able to get it yet?

If you don't mind waiting, the same thing can be had for half the price on ebay. FYI I am using one as an iPad stand and it's working very well. Good thing is it works with or without case, bad thing is obviously you need to plug the cable in manually every time.

The only US distributer is Naked Cell Phone (basically an eBay store but they do have a website). I contacted them 3 weeks ago and they said 10 days they should be receiving them.... So that's 11 late now ?. I keep checking their eBay store daily to see if they get them in.
Sorry if I am dreaming
I need a dock or stand that can handle a thick case.
Size of Nexus 6 is 6.27" x 3.27" x 0.4" (159 x 83 x 10.1 mm), so it should handle 0.4" or greater.

I ended up getting that one. After bending to make room for a USB cable on the bottom and still allowing it to stay upright and not fall backwards, I still only kinda like it. It works if I don't have to touch the phone. If I have a button on the top half, it falls backwards.
Thanks. Do you remember where you ordered it from?

I got it from Amazon. Ended up buying the RND dock that recently came out on EBay. Gets here on Saturday.
I found this desk dock that looks like it would do the trick and it's cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Micro-USB-Desktop-Charge-Windows/dp/B00RWFVS1Q/
I don't have my Nexus 6 yet, but can someone tell me if or how this works with Daydream? According to this: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2818748?hl=en 'By default, your device may only Daydream when it is docked. If you want your device to Daydream whenever it is plugged in, make sure to set "When to Daydream" as "Either" or "While charging."'
Are the docks wired for the phone to know if is docked like the Galaxy Notes I have had, or is there another way? Are there special docks that enable dock mode for the Nexus 6? If so, I haven't been able to find any yet.
I bought one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IMOBI4-2I...t=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item43d6b7daf6..
It's properly made for the Nexus 6 and fits perfectly. You may not want the landscape orientation but it works well for me.
This is the one I'm using: http://fuzdesigns.com/pages/EverDock
Not keen on universal docks
I have to say that I am not a fan of universal docks like the Ever Dock. The bottom of the N6 is rounded and the lack of support at the sides means it can wobble while plugged in.
Sooner or later this is going to damage the USB port.

They have a thicker rubber part you can buy. That plus the case on the phone means the phone rests evenly on the dock.
That makes sense. I hate cases so I keep forgetting that a lot of people use them.
Has anybody found one that activates dock mode for Daydream?
