[Disregard] multitouch distinct files are already present - update to maps 5.x - Nook Color Android Development

Moderator, please close this thread.
EDIT - Update:
This is a non-discovery. Reports are that rotation is working for many people with NookieFroyo 0.6.7 (and later when they come?), out of the box. Not sure why it wasn't for me; but you will definitely want to test it and make sure you have Google Maps 5.1.0 or later... before proceeding with anything below.
I am using this on NookieFroyo... not sure if it works on Honeycomb or stock-rooted.
I took the same file I used to fix multitouch on Google Maps on my Nexus One and it worked!
You can find the file and instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880447&highlight=multitouch+distinct
Obviously 100% of credit to rori~ because I merely tried it on a different device and am reposting.
You will need a working ADB setup. Other than that it should be a straightforward push (I think a script is even included). I didn't try the update.zip method (the Nexus One partitions layout is different, so I wasn't sure it would work).
You may have to remount a different way than the included script says. This is what worked for me:
Code:
adb shell mount -o rw,remount -t ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /system
It seems pretty good on mine; but I would suggest doing an ADB pull of the existing, original file so that you can push it back if this breaks anything. I can't provide support and I'm not responsible if this breaks anything. Good luck!
What does this do?
This actually enables independent multiple finger tracking within Android... a feature not enabled by default because hardware that does not fully support it will report input with a lot of glitches.
The best test to see if it is working is it allows you to rotate Google Maps by twisting two fingers, circularly, in opposite directions.
I am curious though, if this will make multi-touch keyboards more effective?

Will test this out soon. Sounds awesomely fun.

Please try to do rotation before you apply this. Some people seem to say that the rotation is working out of the box... so I need some testers...
I tried pushing back the old permissions file that I had and it made rotation stop working; but I want to know how it goes for other please.
Thanks

I know on my Eclair version, the rotation by default is not working; so i will be able to try this and see what i get.

Not sure about previous versions, but I'm running the internal CWM flashable nookie froyo and it has the multitouch distinct xml file already. For whatever reason I'm still unable to get either the two finger slide or the rotation to work in maps... but then I never had any luck with the nexus one version either.

Have you checked Application Settings to make sure you are using Maps 5.1.0?

Good call. I had assumed that would include the latest maps and it wasn't showing up for me in the market due to the location services bit. I now have working rotation et al.

[Q] All vibration

I just got my Dell Streak and let me know how I can eliminate all vibration from the operation of any occasion(when you tap one of the three buttons
). is there any application or code to achieve this? Or you can change any internal file to achieve this. thanks
yeah the hardware btn vibration is the most freagin irritating thing ever, however i haven't been able to find a workaround this issue, i've been checking around so far w/o success....
The vibration has stopped working on my streak, and I want it back.
This is only since the 2.1 update so I'm thinking about reflashing to get I back.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I'm also on 2.1 (O2 build, from a 00 factory unlocked device) and still have the vibration. Drives me nuts too, I'd love to switch it off.
I see engineering codes have been posted that gives access to EMList and other engineer apps in the app launcher - i've already removed a bunch because i didn't know how to access them so it only half works on my device. Would be interesting to find out if there's a way from EMList to enable/disable the vibration and perhaps even set the device primarily into portrait ...... but I'l have to reflash first cos I didn't back up the stuff I removed doh

ok thanks, I read what I have suggested, I put this code
chmod 777 /sys/class/timed_output/vibrator/enable
but android Terminal?
sorry but not very practical android ,thanks for your help

You can get adbWireless form the market if you dont like typing in the commands - works a treat
Or what I have also done is just copied the text into a .txt file on my SDCard so when the vibration stops working again i can just copy paste into termainal emulatior.
it resets after every reboot. i even renamed the "vibrator" file and it got named back on the next reboot. seems that the streak has some self-healing built in ...

Android Market Support (Vending.apk)

Has anyone had any luck sideloading the vending.apk to the nook?
(edit: possible that it will work based on youtube.apk after sign in to you tube. )
some people are reporting success!
I think the issue is that before it's installed the Market app needs to be made to work on the device. Odds are by default that the market app will not work until someone will be able to edit it's properties.
The Market (vending.apk) has dependencies which be installed before it can work. The Setup Wizard that is normally present which links the device to a particular Google account is not present.
Even with the Market working, the NC isn't licensed for use with Market so it likely would have to use another device's fingerprint such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab. This is change is typically made to the "build.prop" file.

Also, the market should work without a fingerprint, BUT some copy-protected apps might be hidden. I'd get the market up and running first, then worry about the fingerprint stuff.
Also, yes, you'll probably need SetupWizard, but that can most likely be grabbed from...well, pretty much anywhere, including an emulator image.
I'd try it myself, but I won't be getting my NC til tonight.
I think the issue currently is that Setup Wizard doesn't appear to want to work over wifi.
I was able to get all of the Google apps installed last night but the Setup Wizard won't use wifi to sign into my account. Market and Gmail appear to want to work, but shoot you over to the Setup Wizard. The logcat doesn't show much with regards to fatal exceptions.
I'm open to ideas. It got really late last night so I didn't really get to try much.

Have you tried this? Where did you get the dependencies? I tried a gapps that was suggested from CyanogenMod, and it runs, but will not log in. The assumption was that it was trying to connect over 3G rather than Wifi. As of last night I thought it was still unsolved.
The last line of my post says "I'd try it myself, but I won't be getting my NC til tonight."
I don't see any particular issue with connecting over Wifi unless the Nook has a weird setup. We did the same thing with the Pandigital Novel and it worked fine (and that doesn't have 3G either).
Hopefully I'll have time to give it a shot tonight.

It also worked fine on the g-tablet, but something is configured different on the NC. The more eyes looking at it the better!

SUCCESS!!!
I was able to get Vending.apk to install but I also had to install the following:
SetupWizard.apk
GoogleApps.apk,
GoogleCheckin.apk
gtalkservice.apk
But since I can't seem to get it to register my Google account it does no good.
So how do we get the SetupWizard to work?

I pretty much got to the same place. I'm not really sure why SetupWizard wouldn't go through, if it is an issue with something they modified or something else. Unfortunately, they're using a really non-standard Settings.apk, and if I push that over and boot the Nook won't start until I revert it.

Is there maybe a way to set this information without going through the wizard? Maybe a db or prop file somewhere?
Thinking that it might be the AccountAndSyncSettings.apk I tried installed it however, got the following error.
[INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_INCONSISTENT_CERTIFICATES]
I wonder if it can't go through the wizard due to a cert not being loaded.

I'll probably play some more tonight. One error message that stuck out to me was "GoogleLoginService not available", though that is supposed to live in Google Apps (which was pushed), so I'm not sure why it's having issues.

I'm probably spoiled from working on the Pandigital before this. That was a piece of cake, push over the appropriate stuff and Google Apps worked. I'm not really sure what the issue is in this particular case. It's most likely that Pandigital did a really lazy job building their ROM from an emulator image, and BN has done some more customization and removal of stuff, which in turn may be causing problems.
Hopefully it won't be a huge issue.

[App] Thumb Keyboard Now Working Well for NC

UPDATE: 4/30/11
Thumb KB 4.0, Beta 3.1 is now available at the following location: http://thumb4beta.blogspot.com/
If you have Thumb KB already installed from the Market, you must uninstall that version first before installing the new beta.
Some very nice changes so far....enjoy!
Thanks to Paul @ Beansoft for his very hard work on this new version!!
------------------------------------------------------------
Original Post:
I have been working with Paul, developer of the Thumb Keyboard (TKB) app, over the last couple of weeks to fine-tune the various layouts available on the TKB for the NookColor.
As of today, we tested the various layouts and they are working great! No longer does the bottom row disappear like it does with the current version available in the Market. A new version, with the new enhancements for the NC, should be available tomorrow.
This is great news, as this keyboard is incredibly easy, intuitive, and flexible to use on my NC. Appelflap is a very responsive dev and is doing a great job in supporting the NC community with these recent changes to his app.
A big thanks goes out to him for his patience with my testing and for a great app that makes typing on my NC so much better.
[My NC: Rooted, running v1.1.0r2 by Decad3nce, OC'd using 1.1Ghz OMAP3630 by Dalingrin]
I'm really looking forward to this, I have big fingers so I'm "all thumbs" to start with.
Went to market and picked it up but could not figure out how to enable it in the nook. Looks like an interesting concept. Will buy again but can you tell me how to activate it? Refunded until then.

I second that. I bought it too but have no clue how to get it to show up i the list of keyboards. I've done everything from renaming the zip to apk, renaming the latin ime and even copying the zip and the apk to system still to no avail. I see theres going to be an update tomorrow hopefully it fixes the the installation issue but if not can anyone who has gotten this to work please offer a solution.

the apk that you have to move to system/app (as with other keyboards) is actually located in data/app-private. move that guy over and maybe change permissions. its been a while but i think thats how i got this working.
edit: after doing that, i also had to reinstall by clicking on the apk that i moved. it then showed up as a selectable keyboard.

This is what I did to finally get it working. It took me a very long time to get this keyboard recognized in the NookColor Tools as an optional keyboard, but here is what I did:
1) Backing up the Thumb KB on my Droid X using "My Backup Pro" app
2) Transferred the newly created backup from my DX to my NC
3) Used Root Explorer to go into the backup file and and copied the .apk to /System/App
4) From within Root Explorer, installed the .apk (I was already mounted as R/W)
I could just not get it installed from the Market, for whatever reason...even after copying the .apk from /Data/App-private to /System/App.
As a side note, it does seem like renaming the LatinIME.apk in /system/app was something I tried and worked, in addition to what I performed above. I have since renamed that file back and I still have the Thumb KB in my menu option.
Let me know if this works, realizing that backing up from another device may not be possible for everyone.
when you tried copying the apk from data/app-private, did you then install by clicking on the apk while it was in system/app? that was the key point for me.

After copying the .apk to the /system/app folder, I did run the installer directly from within Root Explorer and this worked for me.
I was also helping the Dev out and testing this, and it works great. I did do a restart after I moved the .apk to the system/app folder. Using this keyboard makes a lot more sense for a tablet than the other keyboards. I can type faster now without having to put down the Nook, or feel like I going to drop it on accident.
Been looking forward to seeing the "not completely compatible with Nook" note go away. Thanks for the heads-up. =)
This worked for me

Same issues as above. Great idea though. Refunded until confirmed it can install from market with no tinckering.
Thanks 360Razir for helping me out by testing the keyboard on the NC!
For people with a parser error: do you rename the apk when copying it over? Renaming could be the source of the parsing problem.
Furthermore I turned off copy protection on the market. This should reduce the installation hassle a bit.
I'm planning to make a installer for (rooted) NCs. Can someone describe the exact steps that have to be taken to install TKB on a NC? That would be great (please use the non protected app on the market as the starting point of the description)
One minor issue I noticed; when using the 7" symbol/numeric keyboard in portrait, when I press the ., key, it enters a period in the text box as it should, but the key confirmation popup displays a 0 .

Thanks for noticing. Have to work a bit on the symbol keyboards anyway.

Finaly got a fully working market (2.3.2) (all apps shown).. somehow.

So, after a bit work working and jerking, i actually got my Nook to show everything on the market; sad thing is, i can't say exactly what step did it. But i know overall what i tried, so i can at least mention here...
The first thing first - 2.2.11 and 2.2.7 are out of date. The newest is 2.3.2, and there are some great customized versions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957331
From here, i did a couple of things:
1) Did the standard clear market cache, force close, clear framework data, force close
2) Mounted /system and pushed Vending
3) Fixed permissions (on this, i went overboard, and basically did a chmod 777; but i am sure it doesn't really need that)
4)reboot
5) try to install it a few times (each install failed)
6) Use market enabler, with t-mobile (US) (i ended up buying the key, so i can fake it always on boot)
7) a couple more reboots in there
All said and done, the themed market finally showed up, and even better, EVERYTHING that was once hidden is there. Flash, Angry Birds, Dolphin.. all accessible. Even better, market.android.com now shows the nook, and doesn't say that my device is not able to run whatever. The website itself shows:
Unnamed Device LogicPD Nook Color (zoom2) T-Mobile February 17, 2011 February 16, 2011
Anyway, ill try to answer questions as people have them, but it looks like with the newest market, and (maybe) the faker, we can get full market access.
Well not sure how to get it working, did the easy try with just trying to install the .apk , but it says something about a problem parsing the file or something. I am new to android so not sure how to do the other stuff you talked about. I have root explorer btw.
Hmm.. when trying to install, i didn't run into any parsing errors - it just said it couldn't install.
For Froyo only?
Saw the framework data clear cache which is not seen in Eclair. Just checking.
I found this app that makes the market work with all the apps showing up. It's called MarketAccess. I couldn't find it in the android market, but you can download it here h t t p://amip.org.ru/android/MarketAccess. I have been using the T-Mobile US setting and it seems to work.
Interestingly the site claims MarketAccess is a complete rewrite of MarketEnabler. Not sure whether that's a good thing or not (yet). However, the site does detail why the rewrite was done and what was changed to a degree. Sounds good anyway from the bits I read.

Any interest in Miui v6 for Nexus 10?

Hey all I ported Miui v6 to Nexus 7 this weekend and I was wondering if anyone here would be interested in a port for your tablet. I don't personally have the tablet but I can work with someone to get it ported.
You'll have to know enough about the tablet to flash custom ROMs and also provide me with logcats and screenshots.
Let me know and I can get a port going
Sure.

You're welcome. Just let me know if it boots when you get it downloaded and flashed. No promises I'll get it on the first shot as I dont actually have the tablet

Won't flash:
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
E:Error in /data/media/miui_v6_manta_4.3.28.zip
(Status 7)
Edit: TWRP will flash and boot. CWM not.
Testing now!
---------- Post added at 06:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:31 PM ----------
Whats working:
- Booting
- WiFi
- Touch (obviously)
- mi account login
- mount for photo transfer
- portrait and landscape mode
- Mail app with gmail account
Whats not:
- Play Services FC at boot
- quick toggles area is really small
- Launcher is laggy and dropping frames like no tomorrow (minor problem ^^)
Will update later. Playstore is missing. I'm not sure if intended. I'll try flashing a gaps package i have over top to see what works...
So far i'm really impressed for you not having the devices at all! Great work man, keep it up!

Thanks for the reply!
Miui doesnt include Gapps, however there is the gmscore.apk in the Apps folder that i forgot to remove that gives that Playstore FC at bootup. I will fix that. You will likley have issues with G-apps because of that.
I will remove it and reupload with some other fixes that you mentioned. You can also remove it yourself with an app like root explorer from the Apps folder or you can open the ROM in 7-zip or similar and remove that apk then reflash
Not sure what to do about that slow launcher. Would need a logcat on that one.
Also not sure about small icons in the qucil launch area. I may have to modify the framework a little to getit bigger but Im guessing it wont work becuase of the N10 vs N7 display resolution
Any other FCs? I remember having Keyboard and NFC FCs when I first booted mine
Also, how does the About page look in Settings? Was hoping that I got the build.prop info on the first shot.

Flashing a non-miui Gapps package wrecked the whole system ^^
I'm now loading a gapps package from a hammerhead v6 port and will see.
No keyboard FC so far. I'll look into it when it's back up and running. Since the N10 doesn't have NFC, no problems there either.
I'll do a logcat once i know if i can get the playstore to work or not. Thats my main problem right now.

The Keyboard defaults to Voice-Input with Gapps installed. So you have to skip through setup and make the keyboard standard before entering your accounts.
Working:
- Gapps (Playstore, Mail, Contact sync to miui contact app, youtube... no problems so far)
- Camera (front, back, all modes)
- USB File transfer (Mac)
- Music App (MP3 & Flac, Tags, Lyrics Download, Cover download)
Not Working:
- randomly the keyboard defaults to chinese, although english was selected beforehand
Edit: i'll not try the new build, as the changes won't affect me with the Gapps package installed.
Edit 2: the launcher lags only when moving to the most left page (the widget only page)
Changed my lcd.density to 360 (268 original). Something around 320 would be perfect i think.
So far really nothing to complain about. Everything works. I'll keep using it today and tomorrow in school extensively. If you want me to test anything specific, let me know.
And one more time: I've waited for this a long time, so your work is really much appreciated on my side!

Not a bug just not an option. Like Miui themes.... The entire theme engine is missing from v6 as well as some other things too that you would normally find in other Miui ROMs
Screens are in a GDrive folder (upload size for png's is limited to 256k)

If you need something specific tell me and i'll add it. Most are with density on 320, and i made some with stock 268dpi.
