Okay, so im attempting at making my own theme and I came across a .png image which i opened in photoshop to edit, only problem is the .png pixelated(or something) and photoshop says its an indexed image (which i figured out how to change) but its still pixelated and idk if i can use it in my theme like this. basically im hoping someone knows why photoshop is doing this to the png and what i need to do to keep it from pixelating. If need be i can post a before and after picture to explain my problem better

Careful... 9.png files need to be decompiled first before you can modify them.
There not .9 pngs tho

I reformatted my computer and can't find my Photoshop disk . If someone can whip something up really fast for me, you would make my month. I just need a black screen with the text 'Be good or be good at it.' in white, Calibri, in the center in landscape. If you have the time/skill, a fade in with some kind of horizontal traversing animation would be much appreciated it.
Thank you!

I have only seen a couple of tutorials around on how to deal with 9.png images and they were not very informative and left me just as confused as before. I have put together a Powerpoint presentation that aims to make it a little more clear. While this presentation is not comprehensive it does give the basics of how to fix and deal with 9.pngs.
Just download the file and remove the .zip extension.
For more info on Draw9Patch tool see the official Android Developers page here http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/draw9patch.html
I'll be happy to try and answer anyone's questions and please if you have a tip or trick to add feel free.
I wish you could make a guide on how to theme miui... =[

Very nice. Thanks for this.
Thanks I have been doing alot of work arounds for these. I have also found a way to edit them colorwise in photoshop without having to redraw them. This comes in pretty handy when making alot of color variations of the same themes/roms. It is really quite easy all you do is open them in photoshop then hit image>hue and saturation then play with the master color bar do not touch lightness or go below 0 on saturation. If you mess with negative saturation or lightness it will lighten the draw9 guides and they will no longer work. If anyone is interested in trying it do so at your own risk, I have not had any problems doing it this way.
Now I just need to figure out how to properly use jarsigner and im set lol....
Now this is a useful post, thank you
Thanks
Allot of useful info here also

That's very nice, however I've tried mod the bubbles from the Mms.apk a few times and can't get them to look normal afterwards. Text is outside the bubble etc... Any suggestions? There has to be a trick to those.

In addition to this great tutorial, feel free to grab some great 9 patch PNGS from my site.
I'm adding more daily and you have permission to use for all your android apps, including commercial projects.
I use photoshop now to create them, using various styles. It works like a charm.

you use the ninepatch jar that comes in the sdk. the lines are the guides by which the image is stretched.
on another note. ultimatex is a nice idea, however i would reccomend not using it. the problem comes when you decompile an apk that has .9 images that were compiled with ultimatex. the image and the patch seperate into two seperate files and prevents recompile. its just as easy to decompile the entire apk, edit your .9's then recompile the apk.
Just to add to an earlier post when using Photoshop or fireworks or gimp or any editing till you like you simply select the image with the box tool like your cropping the image being sure to select Only inside the black 1 pixel area. Doing this you can change the color brightness saturation or even add to the image. As long as your changes don't go into the black area you can pretty much do anything.

thats an excelent point. if for some reason the guide lines do get messed up, just delete that part and redraw the lines in nine patch. people fear .9 images and they shouldnt, they only take a little extra effort.
Figured I'd make a few kevlar wallpapers to go with the back of the phone.

Something like this?
How about a ICS colored one. Code is 3F9BBF
that dark kevlar is looking nice.
Thanks for the kind words!
This is the closets I could get for ICS. First wallpaper is a little darker blue than the second.
Thank You.
Could you upload them to an image host like http://cubeupload.com/ that doesn't compress them? XDA compresses the jpgs badly and they look terrible. Save them as png as well.
Need new link.

I think its time that we have a place for specific TW theming questions on the S4. Post your questions, or answer if you can, and we will build a resource for everyone to use.
I'll ask the first questions. Has anyone found where the image is for the volume and brightness scrubber track?
Aw yeah here we go. I'm going to be utilizing this thread a lot. Never themed touchwiz before haha.

I noticed the hdpi thing as well. Also look for images in the drawable folder itself. This usually only contains xml's, but Samsung's apks are a mess when it comes to images.

You got that right about the images lol. Also having so many random things tied into framework and twframework makes finding things a pain. It's taken me days to black out mms, contacts, framework, twframework, and the calculator haha.

I would try if I wasn't stuck looking for what ever is used for the hover preview lol. http://db.tt/ZdKeG7yB

Changing the hue (if you didn't select only a portion of the image) will change the borders as well. If they aren't solid black, then the image will be jacked up. You can also re-trace over those borders with a pencil tool set to 100% black "ff000000" and that should work too.

Are you decompiling the apk, or just pulling the image out of the apk using 7.zip?
I'm decompiling using apk manager and then modifying the png

OK, thats good.
Are you then recompiling the APK so your .9 image is batched? If not, that's what your missing.
So that's what I'm missing, would you mind explaining how to batch the. 9?

Well the process of recompiling the apk will do it for you. You can then pull that image of of the compiled apk, in the dist folder, and put it into your original to flash in recovery, or push using adb.
There is also a tool somewhere out there that will process the .9 without using apktool, I don't remember what its called tho.
