[Q] Streak at Best Buy - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I went to my local Best Buy tonight and tried out the device. I wasn't too impressed with the speed of it, but a BB sales rep pointed out that the device is slow because it is on 1.6. So I tried accessing Marvel.com to read a digital comic, which failed due to lack of flash. The rep told me to try it on the Galaxy Tab, which he said was much more powerful than the Streak. I was able to pull up a comic on Marvel.com using the Galaxy browser and when I tried reading the comic, the screen went grey and showed an exclamation point in the middle. The sales rep started downloading an update and then tried it. I was able to open a comic, but again, when moving to the next panel, a greyed out box with an exclamation point. The rep told me that the device probably needed to have Flash 10.1 to be downloaded to make it work. At this point, I just left thinking that Froyo and Flash is useless on Android for Marvel.com. Can anyone please tell me if they are able to read a free digital comic on Marvel.com where the screen does not go grey with exclamation points when navigating? Is the BB rep correct, in stating that it probably just needs Flash 10.1 downloaded to work correctly? If so, then I definitely want to get the Streak.
Also, does Netflix work on the Streak with Froyo and will movies encoded for the iphone/ipad using Handbrake play smoothly on the Streak?

I have 2.2 froyo with 10.1 flash player on my streak. I tried loading a digital comic and it got thru the first 2 pages, but the 3rd page was the gray exclamation point. I was running on att's hsdpa 3g, so idk if it would've performed differently under wifi.
However, idk if its flash player or simply the streak being unable compute all the data from the marvel flash site.
Netflix is currently incompatible with any android versions. But that is netflix's fault for not developing an android app, though i hear they are currently working on it.

Man, I really appreciate you taking the time to check it out for me! You saved me a lot of time, money and frustration! The Streak is a sweet device, but I think I will wait until the hardware catches up to do the things I want. Thanks again for that feedback

No prob. I think its more software related than hardware though. Just wait for the dual core or even quad cores that will spring up the rest of 2011 if hardware perf is top priority.

On my Streak it looks a little small and it gets a little sluggish,I am sure it is software related.I do not think this toy would be your best option.
By the way very cool website.

I'm running Froyo 2.2 v 1.5.3 by DJ Steve. I have had this version installed for over a month now. I have tried 1.6.1 and 1.5.2 but, have found 1.5.3 to be the best for me. I just went to Marvel.com and had no problems reading a comic via wifi. I suspect your problems are AT&T's ****ty 3G service. Run a speed test, as did I, and you will probably find the same or similar sub par up/down streams. As far as hardware, a quick run of quadrant will benchmark your hardware. Mine scores better than any other phone it is compared to. I do, however, have experience with Linux (what Android is based on) and would consider myself an advanced user. Simply installing the ROM is not enough. The device settings must be optimized, similar to a PC when you buy it new, the Streak is set up to keep the most people happy (ironic, I know). What you must do is make it YOUR StreakDroid through custom mods, the first of which is deciding what ROM you are going to use. I was initially pissed at AT&T and Dell (I have come to believe it was AT&T politics) for slow walking the Dell software upgrades and wanted to return the phone. After flashing/rooting my StreakDroid and freaking it my way I couldn't be happier. i~CON

Okay, now you have me thinking again! So, you went through an entire digital comic on froyo 2.2 with no crashes or problems? Do you think it would work smoothly on an unlocked Streak direct from Dell on wifi?

I can't say that I remember the last time my streak crashed while on the internet with either wifi or 3G. I use the internet for many things, any of which could cause a crash but, does not. I view flash, read news papers, watch movies, read e-zines, and even have the kindle app for books (they have comics there too i believe). Marvel.com was no exception. I have an AT&T locked (well, it was at one point) and it all works just fine. I have found most bugs and complaints about DJ Steve's ROMs to be the hardware sitting in front of the screen having unresolved conflics with different programs/apps. It is not enough to say you have the greatest PC on the planet. You must be able to answer the question, when asked : What can you do with it? Bottom line is experiment and learn. Run Linux Ubuntu live on your windows box and learn Linux. Consequently you will learn Android and PC in general. You will become a better user and will be able to do so much more with a lot less. i~CON

You have me very interested in the Streak. Honestly- if I already have an iPhone 4, how does the Streak fill the gap for an iPad? I used to have the iPad but gave it to my wife. I was thinking about getting the iPad 2 but thought if reading on the Streak 5 was decent, I would probably prefer the Streak because it is more portable and I could swap my sim card to take advantage of my unlimited AT&T data plan. Am I way off base thinking the Streak would keep me happy with a 5" inch screen?

Does the factory unlocked version allow the Streak to be used as a wifi hotspot for tethering?

I don't think so at all.....I want a do-it-all device that fits in my pocket....with the biggest screen that can still fit .....and the streak is great at this.....after using this phone for a week now,I can't imagine going back to something smaller, and if I have to carry something because it doesn't fit in my pocket....I'm bringin my 17 inch lappy : )

Honestly if you dont have 2.2, u won't like the device. But froyo makes the streak a VERY pleasurable device.
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk

Unlocked will have mobile hotspot. But manually putting it on a locked streak will do the same.

Its kept me very happy. I can access a home network server and interface with 5+ machines...all from my StreakDroid. I imaged the ROM into my network so I can reflash it in minutes if i do something too intense. You can do anything you can think of, thats the beauty of open source. You can take it, preferably share your improvements, and do as you please. Good luck i~CON

Yes it does.

Thanks all! I am going to be a proud owner of a brand new Dell Streak unlocked directly from Dell for $400 plus they are sending me a $50 Dell gift card! This will be my first foray into Android, so I am pretty excited! I am still keeping my iPhone because I have a lot of games that I am not sure if they are available for my Dell and I also listen to a lot of podcasts that I have to daily download on my Air to sync back to my iPhone. This will be my iPad replacement!

I went and tried the digital comics too. I'm a comics geek from way back. I mean, I bought Wolverine Number 1 new. So, I was interested (but not surprised) to learn that comics were online.
The first few I tried resulted in the grey exclamation mark. Then I went into preferences and changed some settings. Now I've read two complete Spiderman comics on my Streak with no problems.
As for the Streak vs Ipad thing... let's face it, the bigger screen of the iPad is always going to be better for reading on. However, I will say this. I too wanted an iPad. Then I got the Streak. For some reason getting an iPad just isn't on my list anymore. I like that I can use the Streak for a phone. I like it can fit in a pocket, so I can take it everywhere with me. I have also found that since I've had it, I've used my laptop less too.

Thanks for sharing that information. I have been having eye strain lately reading off of my iPhone 4 and carrying around my iPad at work was pretty awkward. I am hoping that the Streak will fit the bill as a tablet/phone for me. I will still keep my iPhone, but will see how much the Streak grows on me. I see that there are a few games that may interest me, particularly the ones from Gameloft. What's confusing to me is where do I buy them, how will I know an update is available, will it run from the SD card and can the Streak gpu handle games like the iPhone?
Also, I would be very interested in knowing what settings you tweaked to get the online digital comics working successfully so I can hopefully do the same when my Dell arrives.

I changed page transitions to "simple" and changed it so it only displays a single page at a time. These are inside the preferences box in the popup when you launch the comic.
As for buying games, the android market is one place, and there are three other android-centric sites for getting apps. As to the update thing, with most apps you can select auto update. I have chosen not to, however. I check about once a day in the market to see if any of my apps have updates. I manually update apps only after looking at reviews to see if the update broke anything with the app. I'm purposely running a few old apps right now.
Some apps under froyo can be moved to the SD card, some can't. And, as for the gpu vs iPhone, I can't really comment as I've never had an iPhone. I have a few friends with iPhones, however, and after letting them mess with the Streak for awhile, 2 of them have ditched the iPhone for the Streak and the rest are thinking about it. I let them all play Asphalt HD on it, show them google maps with traffic and satellite on, youtube, facebook, and a few other apps I have. I guess it is comparable, or they wouldn't all be so interested in it.

I really can't answer that for you. I was looking for the smallest tablet not the biggest phone. I need the phone to run custom apps, be my calander, my mp3 player, a GPS, an E-book reader, amoung other things. I am a very large guy so although big for a phone it fits me quite well. I like it better than the i~phone, I even joke with apple through my online name. For me, the streak is perfect and I would not change it for anything out there current. i~CON

Ok, so I've had the streak for a couple more of weeks now, being a dedicated winmo userfor some years there were several things I needed to get used to and although there are a couple of thing I will miss, mostly I am more than happy with the switch to android.
There are a few things that are bothering me a little about the streak, although this could be down to my ignorance at not doing the right thing, and maybe others here have similar issues.
My streak sometimes resets for no apparent reason.
Quite often while I'm on the net the browser locks up for a while before putting up the force close message. It's not due to having multiple windows or data-rich pages, it can happen when I've got 1 window open looking at the bbc mobile site.
In contacts, the top tabs for the letters don't respond most of the time.
The browser occasionally closes for no apparent reason.
Anyone else have these issues, or any other niggles?
This post worries me, I really do not want to experience the same problems you are.
This may be bugs which are related to Android 1.6 and not the Streak itself. Remember it is running pretty old software. Can anyone who used Android 1.6 often confirm this? Like the OP, this will be my first Android device

I have had mine for a week now and it has had some hammer in that first week i have tested it a lot and i have not ran into any of the problems you have is yours an 02 one or dell, mine is a dell one
I suppose I have to add, that even with these little annoyances, I'm more than happy with the streak, I wouldn't swap it for two HD2s! No device is ever going to be perfect, but the streak for me is the closest thing to it that's out there.
The promise of a simple upgrade to android2.2 to come later this year is great, seeing as I've been stuck with never-updated Orange roms on htc devices for years. I certainly don't want to dissuade anyone from getting a streak with the original post!
@ LUFC, yep, mine's on O2, but unlike Orange they don't seem to have ruined the device with their own crappy rom. Maybe too many 3rd party apps with all my experimenting, maybe I should tidy up a bit?
I use opera mini and that never locks up or hangs (so far)
I replaced the contacts with phonebook 2.0 (little slow but better facebook picture association for contacts)
My streak has been on 3 days now and has not rebooted once or crashed. Or slowed down...
Mine is direct from dell unlocked.
I've had mine from launch and only had to reboot once - but I think that was because I got carried away with task killer and probably killed something important.
Otherwise its done everything I've asked it to do without too much trouble. Still looking forward to 2.2 though.
it's been mentioned in other threads that task/app killers have been causing the browser to lock/crash perhaps this may be the issue?
I found this to be right, I uninstalled the app-killer apps I had and now the browser works brilliantly.
sorry, duplicate post
My next little grumble in the hope that someone can show me how dumb I'm being.
I store a lot of my favorite photos on my phones, some of which are quite old and I usually have them categorized into folders. I love the stock "photo and video" viewer for it's editing features, and I love the idea of the timeline viewer. But, I get my streak, I transfer my pictures folder to my sd card and now my streak thinks I have 1600 pics taken on the same day! I don't suppose there's any way to switch the view? My other bug with this is that when I open some apps (eg poker or a racing game) the photo viewer shows all the image files just opened by the app. It's pretty annoying, I'm sure someone else is bugged by this?
Yeah the stock picture app is annoying in that respect, its going on the time stamp from file access by the look of things, which is a but crude to say the least, hopefully the one shown on the nexus froyo build will be better.
I guess there will be a way of dictating what folders etc are accessed but I don't know it

Wouldn't putting .nomedia in the folders you don't want showing help?
This should stop the viewer picking them up.
to be perfectly honest im getting abit bored. i didnt think it would bother me so much having 1.6 on this thing but it really bugs me but so did my x10. i seem to have in my head that because i brought this device out right that entitles me to get more from the device than if id simply got it on contract. theres so much i want to do with the streak that right now i simply cant do because of the OS

[q] is htchd2 really worth it?

ok so we all know that the htc leo has alot of cool features you can use on it and alot of its qaulity is unique. but unfortunatly it has lots of problems too. i so far has gotten 4 brand new htc hd2's and they all have bugs and problems within them like restarting by itself many times and freezes. tell me what u think?
I love the phone. But I also have very few freezes and have never had the phone reset itself.
I've never had a defective phone. I think a lot of it is things we do to them.

Same here. The only time I get lockups or slow-downs are after I install certain apps.
Same here..............
Had mine since November and the only problems have been ones that Ive caused through too much tweaking.....
And a problem with T Mobiles original stock rom but that was T Mobiles fault not the HD2.......

The HD2 is a wonderful machine that gives you best performance and wonderful features.
Especially when u compares it to competitive products or the price paid.
I have HD2 , T-8585, since January and never had any freeze or self restart.
All problems I had never cased from the HD2 itself. They cased from installing soft wares which sometimes do not work properly with other soft wares. That was easily recovered with the assistance of nice guys here.
Some problems occurred from defective accessories such as croppy cheap usb-micro cable.
The HD2 is wonderful machine that can be easily converted and modified according to your needs and imagination.
Thanks for the great answers ! I think its just the T-Mobile Rom thats a complete piece of crap. Because I didnt even add anything or tweaked the first 2 phones i got and they still caused many problems within the first day no B/S. Another quick question dough, how much would it cost to buy and repair an htc hd2 LCD screen, because one of my phones screen cracked. Its not the glass outer part that broke but the inner screen.
I am agree with you all, it's a great phone fast-big screen-cool design, but....
It's worth to pay 450 euro for this phone now (AUG)?? I mean I can wait for the next generation (mabe hd3/NOV or DECEMBER) thaat will have more features like an S-AMOLED and mabe a hdmi cable, and all of that with +50 euro.
Do you know anything about new HTC phones that will be released and when, and it is worth to wait more??? Thank you!
I believe the hd2 is one of the best devices on the market. It's fast, it has wonderful features, and now it is capable of running more then one os. Even the stock winmo isn't bad if yu change the rom and don't care about downloading apps. I believe for tmo usa, the hd2 is hands down the best phone they have, other then the n1. And yes better then the samsung vibrant, which is supposed to b upgrade but doesn't even have a camera flash.my experience with samsung phones has been horrible. I don't even think froyo has been released for it. Even tho it's ported, I've been running froyo on my hd2 since late july. As for up coming phones, google htc vision aka g1 blaze. 1GHz processor, medium sized screen, slide out keyboard and android. Basically the first legit replacement for the original g1. Much better then that mediocre mytouch slide 3g. The choice is yours.personally I love my hd2, but yu might just want to wait alittle while longer.

Btw the htc vision should b coming out before the years end. Also there is a rumored hd3 coming soon that is supposed to run wimo7. Decision, decisions lol best thing about the hd2, runs winmo 6.xx, runs linux, runs android, and most likely will run winmo7(I'm sure someone will figure out how to port it) what other phone can do that! Lol decisions decisions

i think its a Great phone, i love everything about it slim design customisation element big screen but unfortunately it does have its flaws eg battery life occasional freezing to name a few plus no further windows upgrade officially it looks like a dying breed imo but without the chefs on here this handset will be resurrected with android port coming through and presumably windows 7 the futures look good
I do love the phone alot and i do think its the best phone on the market but im just highly upset with its problems. My bad luck i guess hehe . I have another question dough.
What does the red or yellow dots on the back of the phone next to the battery on the lower left mean? I got a 3 phones with red dots but 1 with a yellos dot.

all that is a reset button. First it was red, then on the newer batch, it was changed to yellow.
For me, its the best windows phone I have ever used. Although if I was thinking of buying a new phone at this stage of the year, I think I would wait till around Oct-Nov or at least i'll wai for the first release of W7 and see if it is worth the wait. But the HD2's built I think is almost perfect(virtual keys at the bottom would have made it perfect for me).
Well dasz really true ! Thanksz for all da help guysz .. Ima jusz try to find the best rom out there . I wuld like sum help on dat too if u dont mind hehe This site is very supportive and useful !! Big thumbs up
Coming from a google phone for the past 2 years and then going back to Windows I was amazed how easy it was to deal with the phone.
The issues are the same as the others freezing, lag, etc. I think its the stock ROM itself, but I wonder? Sometimes it acts like my old dash and when you have to close the tasks and use a program to clear up ram space, it annoys me.
I don't like the windows market place, in google certain programs are free, but in windows you have to pay to use features? F-that.
I awating till they perfect a andriod rom to be put in the HD2 with no issues.
The good points of the phone is that it syncs to my outlook with ease..

I wouldnt say that since most of the roms here seem to make it run better, but Windows mobile is crap compared to Linux.
The HD2 has the same features as my Andriod phone Google maps, You Tube, Google Browser, yet run like crap on the windows mobile phone. GPS take forever to lock on and the maps just has a differnet feel to it..Youtube runs differnet and the browser is crap
Does this phone really have a 1 ghz processor? It feels like my a phone is on 450ghz at times, again maybe window mobile requires too much?
I'm going to flash a rom on the phone since I am tired of the battery drain which is annoying
I have a Nexus One that I am in the process of selling since I like the Hd2 alot more.
The Hd2 does everything I could ever ask of a smartphone and more:
- Free turn by turn GPS directions
- Emulator gaming
- Word/Excel documents
- Bluetooth keyboard support (Android cant do this at all)
- Voice recorder
- Gorgeous 4.3' monster screen
- Tethering
I haven't had any problems with my Hd2 whatsoever. If anything Android gave me more problems than Windows Mobile. The only reason you hear about Android more is it's newer and the media want's to push it as hard as they do with Apple stuff for ratings...
I'm bored with my HD2. Because its working perfectly. I guess I need a new phone with lots of problems
I love the phone. It's design is great, the screen is amazing and the hardware is beefy. What really makes the phone though is the community and chefs here at XDA. I lose count of the amount of times I have reflashed my phone. With different ROMS, experimenting and messing around. It's a great device if you like doing that. It makes you pity the iSheep followers, really..
However, my main 2 drawbacks are this: 1) The battery life is poor.. although that is understandable with the screen and hardware it's got to supply. 2) the fact that HTC have confirmed that they will not be supporting/supplying WinMo 7 for the device. However, I hold out hope that will not be a problem for the clever guys here at XDA .

[Q] Streak or Atrix

I'm finally going android. After 2 years on the iphone 3gs, my contract is up and I can come to the dark side. I've always been intrigued with the Dell Streak b/c of it's screen size. When the Atrix came on the scene, the laptop dock really impressed me. But after checking out some reviews, the performance of the laptop accessory just isn't quite there. Now, that the streak is just under $50, should I go ahead with the streak, or make a play for the atrix? What say you all?
play both devices first and you decide.be careful though because streak on bestbuy has outdated build so thats means its slow and laggy but if you got the froyo build its like night and day.good luck
If I do get the streak, I'm putting streakdroid 1.7 on there asap.
I just moved from my Nexus One to a Streak this past week and haven't looked back. I was actually planning on getting the Atrix, the locked bootloader kinda ruined it for me though. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm glad I went with the Streak, it's an amazing phone.
play with them both, BUT, make sure the streak has 2.2 on it, or it isn't a level playing field. Since I got mine last fall, I don't think I could use a smartphone with less than a 5" screen
While the Atrix has very cool specs it also has the worst overlay in the form of MotoBlur. In my experience it needs the dual-core processor just to make up for the resources that Blur uses.
If you want to see what new Atrix owners are saying visit the Atrix area in the Motorola owners forum.
I have read reports that SuperOneClick will root the Atrix.
I went to AT&T yesterday and played with teh Atrix. I wasnt too impressed. Sure, it is fast and all, but the screen size just sucks. I think I'm going the way of the Streak. Also, will I have any problems rooting my streak if I do get it from AT&T. I've been seeing some threads saying that the AT&T streaks are locked.

Surprise! I'm happy with the NT

Thought I'd post a contrary opinion (based on many of the threads here and on other sites).
I REALLY like my NT! I've come up Handsprings, Palms, Pres, and iPads, so this isn't my first visit to the rodeo. Currently, I've got the NT and a Sprint Evo 3D.
Yes, out of the box there's some gaps, but a bit of time here and other forums have offered suggestions on side-loading, sync'ing my Evo apps, and tweaking the KT. It's not the end-all-and-be-all pad,but for the price, it does well.
The biggest issue I had was the lack of offline media, since I spend 12-15 hours a week in the air. However, a bit of cross-syncing and I've got my Amazon MP3 library and a couple of pretty good media players.
Am I missing things? Well, I'd really like bluetooth for my freedom keyboard and being able to see my side loaded apps from the main launcher would be nice, but at this moment, I'm finding the KT to be a fine investment.
Oh, and I have moved my new media purchases over to BN. I figure tossing them some bucks only encourages them to keep Nook development going.
I'm really happy with mine too. Its super snappy, feels much more polished than the nook color did. Plus I love reading and reading is an absolute pleasure on this thing.
I absolutely adore my NT, granted its my first tablet, but its ridiculous how much i can do with it for the price i paid. Not to mention it hasnt even been rooted yet!
Ok, I have to ask because I keep seeing things go back and forth:
If one could get a NC or NT for the same price (hypothetically), which would they choose? The rooted NC? Or the "upgraded" NT?
I currently have the NC and I can get my gf to get me a NT for christmas bc she wants my NC. Is it worth the trade?
Well, since I haven't found too much I couldn't do without a touch of effort, I'm not feeling the pain of not being able to root. Sure, it may come later, but, yeesh, I've only had the NT for 3 days!!

The nook tablet. The difference in speed alone is worth it, the nook color felt underpowered to me even rooted.
Ditto.
On paper, the specs are simply hardware upgrade...this much B&N got it right. In reality, it makes the the device more responsive and more enjoyable user experience. The jerky delay in NC drove me nuts.
I have owned the xoom, asus transformer, galaxy tab 10.1, htc flyer and got rid of them all. The one reason? The tegra 2 processor. These devices were hamstrung in the video playback department, a fundemental functional of a media tablet. The NT plays the same hd media files i couldn't on these high end devices FLAWLESSLY. If you ask me this alone makes the nook tablet worth it.

My tablet history has been:
Viewsonic Gtab (Awful. Just awful. Don't ever even look at one)
Nook Color (1.1ghz OC and still slow to my tastes)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (The designer of the Tegra 2 should be impaled as punishment)
Nook Tablet (It does what I wanted except run Google stuff)
What I had wanted was to watch 720p shows in bed or plane or between classes. NT has been the only thing that could do that except my phone (SGS Fascinate).
Even without a root ever coming to be and having to deal with sideloading I still think this is the best tablet I have ever owned. And it's made by a damn bookstore >.>
There some flaws but I bought it mainly for browsing the internet. It really excels at that! I have mainly been using dolphin, not the stock browser. Overall I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. I was at Best Buy today and checked out the kindle fire. It was cool but I really didnt like size of it. I have big hands and like how now matter how i hold my nook its always comfortable. The only thing I really want to change is the crappy keyboard
About the not seeing sideloaded apps, I installed go launcher. From there I use a combo of widget locker, Wave launcher(right side of the screen), and button savior( left side of the screen). I also learned to fear the nook button. I havnt seen the stock nook launcher in over a day now.

I have noticed that using the n button in certain situations (ex: during video in MX Player, certain games) it acts as a back button. Don't fear the n just treat it like a very "special" friend.
I've driven twice to a B&N store and played with the device. As of right now, I still haven't taken the plunge because of three big reasons:
1) I need a web browser that can let me access an Extranet of my work place, and when I used the NT stock browser, the login page button doesn't even show up as a button, but just a jpeg. I know using the Android stock nameless browser, it isn't a problem at all. So it's a huge issue for me.
2) Even if I can get the web browser issue resolved, I am fearful how B&N has the unilateral ability to update the NT without our consent (unless specifically block B&N incoming traffic), we'll lose the ability to sideload and send us back to stone age. (It wouldn't be an issue if root is accomplished)
3) The 1gb user content space wouldn't an issue if we can root it, but now it seems like a huge deal. (Again, it wouldn't be an issue if root is accomplished)
Are my concerns legitimate? I firmly believe the NT could be huge, but right now, we just need to be patient and let our devs gurus find an exploit, or somehow we can get B&N to loosen up the grip on the bootloader.

Well, issue 2 is definitely legitimate. Issue 1, just go to the store and install dolphin on one of their nooks, see if you can login to work.
Issue 3, if the rumors are true that they will be able to repartition the space in a week or so then, well, not an issue.
if the nook tablets bootloader is truly locked, then say good bye to ever, ever seeing a beautiful custom kernel on the nook tablet to perform tweaks such as overclocking. This also makes it difficult to create custom roms. cyanogenmod 7 is a possibility with 2nd init. cyanogenmod 9 is also a possibility, but unless official ics is dished out to the nook tablet, then we will get cyanogenmod 9 2nd init with gingerbread libs.. Someone should send a rather nasty note to barnes & noble about this.
Re: 1GB usable - It's a legitimate support issue. You (and everyone concerned) should call support and light a fire.
Front-line grunts won't be able to help you (a good thing), so ask to escalate it to as high as you can go. Your first response will be to get the tech's name. Your last response will be, "I'm sorry you can't help me with this issue. Please refer me to someone who can. If no other tech is available, please let me speak to your manager."
Don't get discouraged if you get blown off or hit a dead-end. Redial and retry. Social engineering is about patience and persistence. Always be polite, but firm.
Once you get to someone who knows his bits and bytes, then soften your tone and get friendly. Talk shop. Use the occasion to ask about other techy things, like, eh, locked bootloader. Get whatever info you can, including the dude's extension number so you can call him back.
The strategy is to leverage a legitimate support issue to get info about the things you really want to know. To do that, you'll have to troll their support services, and have some social engineering skill. It's probably best done in a team, but you can be the Lone Ranger if you're good.
BTW, techsupps have scripts, and you should have one as well. Plan everything you want to say in advance, and type them out.
Anyway, at the very least, you will get the 1GB issue logged and escalated.
I honestly don't think they're going to bother blocking this loophole. There's really nothing in it for them but bad press. Currently they can sell a tablet to regular folks, while at the same time offering a tablet that's also appealing to techie types (but without having to advertise it). There's really no advantage in blocking the loophole.
Also I'm wondering: is there NO way to block updates from Barnes and Noble? No way to tell the device to notify before actually updating? I understand that B&N will push out updates without any warning, but isn't there a way that WE can decide to accept them or not? Or is it really just totally out of our hands?
to whooever it was who thought the HTC flyer was running a tegra 2: it's not. It's a 1.5 ghz single core.
So far, the t2 seems fine in conjunction with mx video player and the software decode on the things I've tried it on. but I'm not mostly using a tablet for video, so the fact that a PAL formatted disc image I have makes trouble is ok by me. I will say, though, that the single core chip in the Samsung media player seems faster than the t2 or the (admittedly brief) run I took at an NT this evening. I didn't walk out of BN needing desperately to replace my NC, though - manual nooter, 1.1 ghz kernel, seemed relatively comparable to what I saw, but I wasn't ready to actually test carefully.
The NT is rooted as of today, via zergrush. This should make it possible to redo the partitioning. The bootloader's another issue; I don't know if anyone has tried looking at putting the little guy into fastboot and seeing if oem unlock is an accepted command. It may be. Unlocking it may turn off Netflix support, but it should open up avenues for complete custom ROMs.
On blocking OTA updates: probably fairly simple. D/l the OTA and look at the build id strings in build.prop. Update build.prop on your device accordingly. I've blocked the 1.3 update this way, and it works great.
It will probably not work cleanly for blocking the 1.4 update, though, if that's a Gingerbread update, since to get the block you probably have to tell the device not just that it's running the current BN build, but that it's also running a Gingerbread vintage OS - but I don't know about that.
There are some sqlite hacks for blocking updates as well - setting an autoupdate flag to "false," basically. I'm not sure how well they work, but blocking the update is always a topic of discussion immediately after one's released and no one's figured out how easy it is to pop yet
My real question on the NT is whether it contains a complete recovery image. Very few Android devices are as idiot-proof as the NC. Most of the "recovery" modes I've seen don't offer the ability to return the device to a true stock state. The NC, at least, is fully recoverable.
To me, that makes the NC one of the most useful Android platforms out there, and if the NT can't do that, then it's not really much of an upgrade for me -- I screw things up. Often. Badly.

I'm fairly certain that it does have a full recovery image imbedded somewhere. Yesterday I tried in stalling Chainfire (which apparently messes with the filesystem) in order to get full access to the GPU and fool the market, making all apps show up. After installing it, which required a reboot, my NT went into a boot-loop. I could not power it off and with no recovery available I thought I was toast and out of $260. However, after many (10?) failed boots it automatically went into Factory Reset mode and did a complete wipe.
I'm not sure how deep of a tailspin this recovery can get you out of but there is definitely a safety net there.
I have to agree with the OP. I am very happy with my NT. It is very snappy and with the ability to sideload apps I have been able to fill in what I feel was missing. Battery life on this is very good. I did buy this hoping I could boot off an sd card, but if it ends up not possible I will still be pleased with my investment.

Hi I'm new and I have questions (PLEASE DON'T KILL ME)

before I state my question, YES i tried searching around this forum for my particular problem, but I'm kinda ishy-washy on some of it- I'm one of those people who needs an answer to my exact problem so sorry!
Anyways, I have this HP Touchpad for awhile (my Aunt bought it for me when it was on a huge sale in mid November) and I kinda got pissed at it with it's lack of apps and things to do, compared to what my friend has: an iPad. So I put it in my closet, until now where I'm just craving for a tablet.
But I still have the same problem: THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO WITH IT. I have watched many videos and blogs about how people changed their touchpad to different systems and I'm interested on how to do that. First of all, which system is good for me to switch too? I do not want to switch to a system that will not benefit me at all. I am aiming for using a tablet for opening Microsoft files (Word, Powerpoint) and editing the files, playing FUN games (not that awful Robotek game), and watching videos on youtube.
So which system you recommend on me getting? And what tutorial to follow to get that system? Is there risks involved (I do not want to waste my touchpad)? How big of a risk? Should I just save up for an iPad? Also please be specific on the tutorial on what to do (Preferably a video tut or possibly have one of yall geniuses be there while I do it)
Sorry for all the questions lol I'm just about this close to throwing this tablet out of the window.
Well, there are a few things you can do with it already.
Firstly, WebOS is a nice OS. Yes, there's a lack of games for it at the moment. Yes there's a lack of other non-game apps available for it, too. That's a given. WebOS is just not as popular. HOWEVER. With it being open-sourced this year, that should change.
Secondly, the ability to install Android on your Touchpad is well documented. There's a great guide on how to do that at this link here (to RootzWiki). They are the people who put CyanogenMod 9 (Android 4, Ice Cream Sandwich) on the Touchpad. This means you have a tablet OS of Android that works, is (in my opinion) extremely stable, and can do almost anything.
For your need of YouTube, that's covered - the HD acceleration has been incorporated into Alpha2 that I linked to you. The ability to play games, there's a lot of them out there for Android, and with a little searching, you can tweak your TP to be able to download and play more of them. As for office files, if you download any of the good Office Suites (they cost anywhere from 5-25 dollars), you can do mobile office work right on your tablet. I have all three from the Amazon AppStore - Documents to Go, OfficeSuite Pro, and QuickOffice. All three offer their perks, all three have their downsides, but all three work great for what I've had to do.
If you have questions about the install, feel free to drop me a PM - I'm more than happy to help walk you through what you need to do to get ICS installed on your TP. And since I've done it many, many times, I can almost walk you through it completely in my sleep.
Hopefully that answers some of your questions, mate. If not, as I said, ask away, and I'll try and help.
I have they fixed the wifi issuse in alpha2?

Some have issues, others are fine. My problem lied with the channel my router wifi was on, after switching it to channel 1 (the most popular solution), I haven't had any wifi problems in over a month, compared to every hour or so before.

Hey again I have another question: I installed Cyan 7 Alpha 3.5 but whenever I charge it, it restarts. It also restarts when I leave it on for a while.
Is this common?

Well... it's now essentially dead... you aren't going to find much support lol. Nobody in their right mind is using CM7 still, unless you must absolutely have half-working Skype or something. Move up to CM9 bud, see if that doesn't fix things.

It'a an alpha, it's common to have problems. But why would you install a CM7 Alpha? Like that guy said, get on CM9. The camera still doesn't work, but to be honest, it wasn't really functional in CM7. Other than that, everything is MUCH better and more stable now.
If you are looking for a cheap method to work with Word documents you can use Google Docs. It is cloud storage but it will let you do the basic work on any device and then download it in Word format.
Any of the other listed apps do a great job as well. I got them all free on the Amazon App Store, they have a free app of the day. Once you get your tablet setup and in a good state look it up for freebies.
its a great tablet.

Euh i just want to say dont buy a ipad if you have a great tablet alrrady hp touchpad. Its the same size screen etc.. ipad is fun but sucks (because of no costumaziation android is and says fun) only thing i still dont like about TP is no hdmi out and no full usb host, but still better then ipad (doesnt have one of then also)
I had used webos for a long time downloaded al games for sites and afcors instaled preware i had i think about 10-15games 3d games like ashalt need for speed. Al for free. But after 2-4months it sucks and i instaled android and never rebooted webos again.
If you have CM7 Running, what you need to do is Download the CM9 files and gapps v11, then go to Clockwork recovery, wipe, flash files, and reboot. That will work beautifully. lol
If you insist on staying on CM7, then that is normal for some reason that it will boot when a charger or usb is connected (maybe even CM9). Even sometimes without it being connected, if you do a shutdown from within the OS, it will reboot and you have to select shut down from the moboot menu.
