first of all: Thank you all guys for developing Rhobuntu and putting so much effort in this project.
I am planning an experimental Application that I would like to use in my studies. But i need a Smartphone (or a tablet) that runs Linux native (not Android). Furthermore i need to develop a small application that is able to receive sms.
Do you think, this is somehow possible with Rhobuntu? Or would you suggest any other Smartphone/Tablet/Linux ?

Hi guys,
we will have to buy a new phone for my visually impaired sister during next year (or maybe much earlier), because she is currently unable to use her simple Nokia (unable to read SMS messages on display etc.).
I tried to find any simple phone with voice output for her, but the only one possible candidate was Samsung Haven, which was only available for U.S. mobile networks and not for european GSM (and did not have Czech language support, but this was minor in this case).
She needs only a simple phone to perform standard voice calls and SMS messages. Current approach here is to use some smartphone – symbian with Mobilespeak or Android with Code Factory or some other a11y suite. OK, why not, but this aims to make a accessible smartphone, while many people need only accessible phone (which is not available).
So this také me to following idea:
if Android uses a modified linux kernel and GUI via Java virtual machine Dalvik, then it should be possible to use alternative simple menu with something like linux console voice output instead of the standard GUI and so make it much quicker.
This menu could be very easy – only to provide functions similar to „normal“ cellphones like the old good Nokia 3310 only with voice output. I know that it sounds very stupid to degrade a smartphone to a simple cellphone, but I do not know other way.
I think, that such trimmed off custom ROM with this sort of text menu and only basic functions (calls, SMS, phone book, calendar and clock with alarm) combined with a voice output could be able to run on cheap and relatively weak devices like Huawei Boulder for example so final solution could be comparable with normal cellphones. We need something with physical keyboard, so we could use HTC Cha Cha or if possible, the much cheaper Huawei which are both available from official distribution.
Are there any initiatives or attempts to create something similar?

Hi Guys
I've been developing a http based Server Software that uses an android device as a single purpose device.. say an input terminal. So I developed a very simple app just for this input purpose (including some data from sensors on the device). It aslo loads a web view for a little html banner.
So it's really simple and the design is to basically turn an android device into a single purpose hardware... and with that said i really dont need 90% of what's installed and running on android, I dont need complicated launchers, and i DO need to kind of "lock the device down" to my app only (i guess kiosk like?)
I basically need the hardware and the OS to run my app.
if possible make everything as lightweight as possible (again as i dont need most of the android features)
and I would love it if my app can run on top of everything and at every start up (it can even pretend to be the SHELL or OS on top of Android OS, or kind of like that approach)..
So yeh, I'm hoping you guys can give me some advise/suggestions as to how best to approach this? (honestly i'm fairly new to android as a whole)
Things off the top of my head are:
1) Custom ROM like really plain/lightweight w/ lock down features <-- is there even any rom like this? or could i ask someone to code this for me?
2) Root, SuperSU, and xPosed Framework plugins and tweaks ? <-- i've not tried xPosed Framework and Im not sure if it's meant to be, or good for, my purpose.
3) Use an APP that can pretty much make a Kiosk out of the phone, w/ my app running permanently? <-- i've seen one kiosk app www.kioware.com but it's crazy expensive and i guess a bit of an overkill to what i need.. Perhaps there's a cheaper more simple kiosk app you can recommend? or perhaps an opensource project i can tinker with?

Hoping to find some fellow (unlucky) Good for Enterprise users here. More specifically, has anyone been able to use it on an Android device that Android 5.0 and up? My company unfortunately requires me to use the software to get to my Exchange email. I am a T-Mobile Note 3 User who is just tired of how lanky and heavy TouchWiz is, but do enjoy the hardware of my phone, every single bit!
Long story short, thinking of going to CM11 (KitKat) to make my device fast, but was wondering if there are any Good for Enterprise users here on Android 5.0 and up and if so, do you know if there is a way to use the app on a ROOTED device? AKA Hide root like we used on Xposed via RootCloak or GFE patch?
Would appreciate ANY help and advice! Thank you in advance for your responses!

I'm no developer or anything but I have been "coping with limited success" for a while now. There is a thread XDA that uses xposed framework developed by "Phantasm4489" but its in a limbo phase at the moment.
1. The alpha build of PA 5, if installed without root ( user discretion now to root or not to) works fine. The only issue is that the ROM is quite bare bones. My point being ROMs built using those principles may work as long as you forfeit your root privileges.
2. If you have a browser access ( web login ) you can install GFE on an unroofed secondary device, and sync notifications across android devices through the push bullet app. You will be notified of new mails, but you will have to login through web. Not the best but it can work somewhat reasonably.

I'm new at Tizen development. I want to make a simple REST call from my standalone Tizen Wearable App. Unfortunately I'm not getting any response. Is it possible to use REST in Tizen?
I even tried using an example getMyIP URL to avoid server side mistaken conduct.

The device is created for our app.
Not sure about from start up, but you can use the screen pinning function in Lollipop or if it's running an older version of Android then you would need to create a kiosk type app.

There are 3 well known 'kiosk' apps available. They are all capable of doing what you want to a greater or lesser degree. (Kioware, Mobilock and Surelock ....others are available). The problem for you is the cost, if you intend to scale up your devices. If you are putting your app on a $20 Chinese tablet, then these apps listed above all want another $15 or so to install, which doubles your costs!
I'm looking at a similar problem, and I think the true answer is a specialist ROM with most of the opsys actually stripped out. Only problem with that is...... that it is WAY beyond my talents and abilities! I would be enormously interested in how you get on (without needing to know your application specifics). Keep in touch?
