Hi guys!
It's very difficult not to cup the bottom left side of the phone which ultimately blocks the antenna on my phone and decreases its signal. I was wondering if there is a work around for this problem? Will buying a thick cover case for the phone (like a Trident Cyclops for the Samsung Vibrant) resolve this?
Let me know if anyone is experiencing this and how you guys get around it.
Thanks!
we have a death grip?
everyphone has a death grip.
Stop using your phone as a cup and hold it the way its meant to be.

Not even cupping, just merely having my hand in the bottom left side of the phone
like this decreases my signal 1-2 bars.
I found that putting a couple of layers of cloth in between my hand and the phone decreases the effect. Hopefully the armor will do the trick.
i just tried it, and i HAD to cup it for it to work just normally holding it or while making a call my hand doesn't cup the whole thing and nothing happened...
maybe you have a faulty one?
try to get a replacement? i'm not sure

I don't know, maybe i'm a little bit far from my tower which is the reason why the antenna is a little bit finnicky? I'm not sure. Oh well, if problems persists then I'll just have to hold it differently from now on hehe
DUDE........... I'm left handed and this phone works just fine there is no death grip. It is the First thing I Always check on a phone or other devices being in this right handed world.
It is probably your phone ONLY........ I have 2 Vibrants both work flawlessly

No one is experiencing this. The way you get around it is to stop referring your iPhone as the Samsung Vibrant
I have this issue too, but it doesn't drop calls it just drops my 3G signal which sucks. So if i want to use 3g i have to use it in landscape and don't touch the bottom left.

Thanks! Good to know i'm not the only one with this problem.
I had this problem on the stock 2.1 from samsung. Once i switched to the bionix v 1.2.1 everything is great. I used to have that same complaint
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I think I have this too. Just posted a message that my phone won't stay on HSPDA or 3G as soon as I pick it up.
There are 2 other Vibrants in our household. The other two do not have this problem. They stay on 3G just fine.
Do you think this is a warranty covered defect? It's bothering the heck out of me.
Just an update on this.
I figured I should test this out on the Rogers network as well here in Canada. I tried cupping the lower left side of the phone but amazingly, no drops in signal at all.
So, in conclusion, the signal drops only happen when under the WIND Mobile or Mobilicity (AWS) networks...
same here
I have an unlocked vibrant on att, and suffer from the death grip as well.
Has to be a bad antenna wire Never had a problem with the phone and I am left handed,
this death grip only happens when i'm inside my house. Very weird.

What do we have here? A discovery I made on BriefMobile.com about an extreme loss of signal while using the HTC EVO View 4G. As sad as this is, it is true. I have embedded a video I made describing and detailing this problem.
Can anyone duplicate this issue? If so, please explain in detail what is going on, and then go ahead and send you complaint to HTC and see what they have to say. I have already done so and am waiting on a reply, but if anyone else wants to join me, please send this video along with any others to HTC and mention where you found it first.

I have ordered a tpu case for mine. It is supposed to be here on Wednesday. Once I get it, I will put it on the View and see if it helps resolve the issue.

Huh? You tell him that's dumb but then you make a dumber statement? Honeycomb does work in portrait mode. The only native app I"m aware that forces landscape is Market.
(Owner of an HTC View and Acer Iconia)
I was able to reproduce the problem with the bars on mine, however it didn't really seem to cause a performance hit for the most part.also, except for one hiccup, I have stayed consistently in evdo on the 3g side since my last reset.
Also, I have the official htc case from sprint, and in the case I don't really se e the signal drop. However, in a stupid design flaw the case hinders the speakers.
just curious. why would a case make it better? wouldnt it make it worse? I see this on both the flyer and view.
Just ran speedtest in portrait mode with around 950K download and 640k upload Average over 3 runs. Land scape had a 400k average download and 300k upload. Then back to Portrait with a 950 k download and 670k upload.
It is Def a performance Hit holding it with 2 hands in landscape. Holding with 1 hand in landscap with hand supporting bottom of tablet has no effect. That is the way I use it as I'm using my other hand to navigate. Only time I use 2 hands is when typing or reading. But it is an issue, though probably won't be able to be resolved. Your hand isn't the best conductor. There Just needs to be a label like on several of my other phones that say, "Holding in this area may reduce signal strength." This really isn't a big deal and can probably be found in some sort or another in every device out there.
Yes, Placing your hand over a wireless antenae may result in reduced signal strength. This is nothing new in wireless devices.

If the issue was similar to the one on the iPhone 4 then I was hoping the tpu case would act in a similar manner as the bumper did on the iphone 4 thus improving reception.

Indeed. Antennagate was such a big deal because it was Apple making a large design mistake and was causing dropped calls. Two things we certainly don't have to worry about. Thanks to Korey for noticing the issue and bringing it to our attention.

The problem with the Iphone was Pressure, adding a case fixed the problem as there was no longer direct pressure. There is No Such Issue with the View. It is not a case problem or lack of one. Having or not having a case won't make a bit of difference. My View acts the same wether the tpu case is on or not. It is an interference problem caused by covering the Antennae with you hand. Could be a crappy antennae, but it's not the same issue Apple was having.
For instance I can place my hand over the tablet in that area without touching the tablet and the signal strength will decrease. This IS NOT an Apple Like issue.

No, but it is the placement of the antenna in such a critical spot...
Just got the 3d and noticed a few things, its really warm at around the camera on back, sprint network is trash can't even watch a YouTube video smoothly thru always stops to load, coming from tmobile nexus one then nexus s just wondering anyway to improve the data speeds? Beside that screen is beautiful phone seems very smooth as it should be but I really wish to step me data speed up...
*Any way to protect the camera lens Im worried about when I put the phone on a table...
How would I go about using tethering?
Get a gel case off Amazon or eBay for +/- $3 if your worried about the cameras , also the screen could crack if you dropped it. Better safe than sorry.
Proxy hack
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140870
to improve your data speeds, you'll need to call sprint and ask for your MSL.
For some reason on the evo 3d, the youtube app is **** (wifi, 3g, 4g) and nothing loads very fast. So I use the browser and go to youtube. It loads instantly.
Oh and just root and install a rom that allows you to tether (Read as:ALL roms here)
3G is very very bad... I can't do anything on 3G. Thankfully the 4G in my area is great.

Do a profile reset.I just did a speed test over 3g right now and got 1300kpbs.... I get anywhere from 1-1.8 mbps depending on where i am in Orland Park.
I also have lots of problems with the 3G, and it seems to be unique to the Evo 3D. It sorta just goes out sometimes.
" *Any way to protect the camera lens Im worried about when I put the phone on a table..."
I use the case from tpu-cases.com as it protects the camera (see pic below). FYI it also fits in the HTC Car Dock with the insert removed so for me, it works and looks great.
Wow thanks guys for all the responses really appreciate it, any one notice that if you hold the phone with your right hand the service immediately goes down to like 2 bars is that were the antenna is?, an nice case up there bro how much bulk does it add also have a pic of it on the phone if its not to much trouble
The top half of the phone contains all of the electronics while the bottom half is pretty much all battery. With how many antennas this phone has it is easy to block them, but most of the time just sliding your hand down a bit is enough to get a full signal back. 4G on the other hand... it's always temperamental unless you are lucky enough to live in an area that is completely saturated with it.
+1 for the TPU case too, I got one to hold me over until the kick stand case came out but I'll probably end up sticking with it now. If you check in the Accessories section there should be a thread in there with a bunch of info about them
I can't even put my right hand near the in a heartbeat lessens the signal bars to 2 smh anything u can do?
(getting frustrating really fast smh)
Cool thanks^^, it may be just my phone but i am tethering as we speak when i send a message the 3g logo turns invisible an I lose allvmy bars for just a sec is thus normal?
It may be dropping down to 1x to send it, I don't know why it would need to but if it treats it like a call then it has to drop 3G for a split second so it can connect.

He's in Orlando, FL. Not Orland Park, IL.
I know where he's coming from. I'm Orlando as well, and 3G is pretty ****ty. I've got full bars and only got .85Mbps down and .39 up. But, my Hero was even worse, so I'm not complaining.

I get .3 if I'm lucky. Luckily, 4G is pretty good around here.
Here's a pic of the back of the camera area with the tpu-cases. There's plenty of height above the cameras so that when you lay it flat on a table that it will be protected. IMO, it is as thin as your going to get and it will hold up for everyday use. It was never intended for the high impact stuff so obviously you have to go with the otterbox/Seidio Convert-type cases for drops and abuse.
BTW, I'm up on a hillside (L.A. area) notorious for bad reception but calling and 3G works great, when 4G is available it's incredibly fast on my EVO 3D. As you probably know, it's like that with all carriers, cell service will work better than others depending on where you are. If it's bad maybe you should consider asking for a Airwave/Airvana.
Hope this helps.

If there really was a serious reception issue, like excessive dropped calls and such, Id expect HTC would address the problem and either push out an update or offer to repair the phone, not just deny or say "your holding it wrong" like another company would.
I'm currently on 1.11.651.3 a message popped up saying that I should upgrade to 1.13.651.3 but im hesitant to do so as I dont know how that would affect my signal since I've heard some people say that upgrading their software messed up their signal, any insight on this?
I am sure most people on here would have noticed that the WiFi signal on the htc amaze is drastically affected by the use of a phone case...
This was a dreaded problem for me up until now...I found a way to boost my WiFi signal without sacrificing protection....
All I did was cut a little piece of aluminium foil and attach it to WiFi antenna located on the inner back panel of the phone.....The antenna is located next to the camera lens....
Once the foil is attached to the antenna, replace the back cover and you should have improved WiFi signal that instant.....Fill free to put on any phone case while surfing the internet at blazing fast speeds using WiFi....
Questions are welcomed if the procedure is not fully understood..
I noticed this when I put a d3o dual case on mine.. can u post pics of what you did?

Now that sucks, I bought this phone because of the luxurious look and feel (high class build quality). This is like putting rabbit ears on my 65 inch plasma (Ghetto). Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in (into the projects lol).
Don't forget that no one else knows the foil is there except you... A rabbits ear on a 65inches tv can't be hidden..

Perhaps your router is not far from your phone that why... If there are few walls between your phone and router you will notice the problem..
This has nothing to do with internet provider or router..
Try covering the top of your phone when the d30 case is removed and see if your wifi signal drops... If it dosen't then you are too close to your router to notice the problem...
All the fol does is boost your wifi signal .. I have been using it for while and I have consistently got full wifi signal even when there are few walls between my device and the router,,,
Makes a difference, thank you
Bluetooth
I've also notice the same problem with the bluetooth radio. With a gummy cover on (silcone I believe) my moto bluetooth headset SD9-HD doesn't work worth a F*&k but without the cover it's all good.
Which is the BT antenne?
How about cell signal???
This trick reminded me of the old product called cell phone signal booster sticker. Here's a YouTube video http://youtu.be/Elgx7lp7YMc if you are not sure what I'm talking about.
If we can boost cell signal using your method, it would save battery as well (without spending too much money on this sticker). Any thought, guys?
Might be a contact issue, not a "this piece of aluminum foil is a better antenna." I'd posit that the two gold colored contacts are not making a solid electrical connection to the rear cover's antenna contacts and that the aluminum is helping by acting as a shim. But I could be wrong. For those of you with Wi-Fi issues, ever so carefully bend the little gold colored metal contacts on your phone upward to ensure solid contact with the rear of the case.

Well the foil also helps the wifi signal retain its strength... Try covering the back of your phone using your hand and you will see that you loose all wireless signal unless you are close to the router..
Try the same procedure with the foil on and you will see that the wireless signal remains strong regardless of position
Wow, this little piece of aluminum actually works. However, it doesn't work 100% for me. My WiFi signal strength fluctuates quite a bit. But at least I can actually stay connected to my WiFi now.
Thanks. This is a great tip
Edit: this also fixed the problem my amaze had when connecting to my router at work. It would always say connected but data would never be exchanged.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App
I thought you were punking us. I was hesitant to even try, because I just KNEW this was a joke. But... it really does work!
I have had nothing buy buyers remorse since buying two of these Amaze phones (full retail price at a TMO store) - on a prepaid plan. They give you about 3 nanoseconds to return - and even then charge a $50/phone restocking fee.
Service is very poor in my home - which I knew before I bought. But, I assumed the Wifi calling would circumvent that problem. I was so disappointed with the jitter, stutter, lost packets, and overall piss-poor wifi call quality, that I upgraded my router, and installed a corporate-rated access point. There was some improvement, but nothing that rivaled a good cell call.
Best DL speeds were around 8-9mbps, and very erratic. With the foil, consistently 20mbps! I am completely dumbfounded.
If such poor wifi performance could be remedied by such a simple fix, why on earth does HTC not do this from the get go? It just doesn't make sense.
So, what have you guys done to keep the foil from shifting, or falling out when changing the battery?
OP, I luv you...

Hi all, newbie here
Just received my shiny new S3 this morning and it's beautiful - haven't had a chance to power it up yet.
Thing is, I'm a complete OCD freak when it comes to my gadgets, and I've noticed that on each of the four corners of my handset (on the bezel) there are small lines that appear to be joinery spots, but I'm not quite sure. At first I thought it was a crack but then realised that there are small lines on each corner, which leads me to believe it is joinery and not cracks. The lines are not that visible but if you focus you can spot them.
Sorry to be so OCD but can anyone else confirm this?
Thank you

Saw it right from the moment of unpacking, too... and I don't have OCD neither.
But that barely visible and after a few days with the handset, I'm actually glad it's plastic and not metal... It's softer, warmer, and it will actually absorb shocks better, effectively protecting the screen a tad more. And it's moulded in one piece...Only the mould was not in one piece itself
I noticed mine today which led me here. Thing is i saw a post on the net and the guy had one just below home button and cpw changed the phone for him.
Same lines are on the Galaxy Nexus. I never saw them but my friend dropped his phone and thought he cracked it in those 4 spots. Then he asked me to check mine and sure enough, they were there.
Mine too...............
I have also seen those 4 hair line cracks/joints around all corners on my white S3 this morning. Because I already requested for return and refund from eXpansys-usa.com. so before sending then I want to confirm it, Is it normal?. otherwise they will laugh on me.:silly:
I think the 4 corners are normal, but the other random spots aren't. I ordered mine from Expansys-usa.com too. I don't have the random spots, but do have the 4 corners and they aren't like the one in the picture. They are hard to see unless you look for them. Like it's how the phone is put together.

Cracks in Plastic around edge on my Galaxy S3
I noticed a crack near where I plug the charger into the phone. At first I thought it was a seam where the plastic came together so I didn't worry about it. Now I have noticed that the phone has developed several small cracks around the edge (near the volume rocker and at the top corner.). I have never dropped it and have always taken care of it.
Today I did a quick search and found that this is a problem others have reported so I gave Sprint a call to find out what could be done. They said to bring it into the closest sprint store which is 70 miles away. The only other option they gave was to call Samsung. So I did.
Samsung said they could repair the phone but they needed to take my credit card info and would charge me if it was due to damage and I wouldn't have my phone for over a week! Needless to say I am beyond frustrated. I am a loyal Samsung customer... Have 2 galaxy s2 phones ( for my kids) a Tab2 and just got the Note 10.1. I am even considering upgrading to the note II when it comes out. I am completely concerned about the quality of plastic that they are using in this phone and am reconsidering my loyalty.
Guess I have to take it back to sprint when I am close to their store to get anything done without having to give a credit card or be phone less for a week! What a pain in the arse! Should I un-root my phone before doing this to avoid the inevitable "warranty" - issue?
Are there others that have noticed these cracks and gotten any resolution from Samsung or their carriers?

gotta complain samsung to use such a cheap quality product
So I recently discovered that the Rezound (and other phones) receive signal through the battery door. I did not previously know this. I was wondering if anyone had any information on how this works. The reason I want to know is because I am in a VERY low service area, and if I stand in certain areas or at a certain angle in my house, I can get service enough to make calls and send texts, but just the slightest move can ruin it. I know all about the Network Extenders and Boosters and all the external hardware you can obtain to help this problem, but I was thinking of a more direct way that one might possibly increase their signal.
What I was thinking is that old cell phones have antennas, right? So if the Rezound (and other smartphones) use a similar or at least some kind of antenna system (such as through the door of the phone) then maybe one could use a wire and rig it to attach to the door to increase signal.
I wanted to try poking a hole big enough to fit a small wire through the top of the door, but small enough to not be noticed, and then try and attach the wire to one of the pieces of the door that grabs the signal. I want to be able to remove it if I want to, but I would figure out how to do that part on my own.
I basically just want to know what part of the door is giving my phone its signal. I see that the door has what look like metal plates on it and I am guessing those have something to do with it.
Can someone give me a little more info on how this works so I can try to figure something out for myself?
Thanks a ton!
Btw I realize doing something like this (even if it worked) will increase the signal very insignificantly, but I figure that it might be kind of fun to at least try and see what happens.

Btw I realize doing something like this (even if it worked) will increase the signal very insignificantly, but I figure that it might be kind of fun to at least try and see what happens.

Antennas are very complicated....a wire really wont help you....if you can pick some up id get paint with a hight metal content of gold or copper...prefferably gold...and go over where the copper paint already is...thats the antenna and a slight elongation of the paints design can cause alot of issues....ive tried aluminum tape and it really didnt do much justice in signal...i tried gold content paint as i had some laying around and had great sucess....although the cost would be just as much as building your own signal booster antenna....which i can dig up the guides for you on that as well

Hey thank you for the reply!
I would love the guides to making a booster. That will probably help me out.
Do you think if I got a copper wire, like the copper side of a speaker wire, I could strip it and close the door down onto it with the top sticking out? I mean, like I said before, I don't think the signal would be increased drastically at all, but could this help?
The gold paint you mean, is there an alternative or a cheap method of doing something like that besides what you had mentioned?
Thanks again.

no....they have to match the antenna design thats already there....like i said you can use a better copper paint which is cheaper than gold but gold is much better because of how well it can conduct...sticking a wire in it will proobably give you even worse signal than what you have...the signal booster will still run you a little bit of cash and requires a little bit of knowledge to do so...guides can only go so far sometimes...and unlike old school fliphones or old brick phones with antennas the ones is this phone are designed and programmed a very certain way and is complex...hence why your best bet would be a signal booster...let me google around for the right guide and ill get back to you

About how much would the booster cost, and it'd work with other phones in the house too? Service is spotty in our house too for some of the phones.

you can buy one outright for around $150 or make one for about $50 to $75....also depends on if you want one band repeated or up to 3 bands...rezound on verizon only uses 2 though....and yes it will work for any phone that uses that band and or carrier...the cheaper alternative is the paint...which runs about $30 for the gold or $15 to $20 for the copper
Heck, I would really love a signal booster. I usually have one bar of signal, and I can't ever call or text out here

when i lived in the woodland areas of massachussets i had to try whatever i could for better signal...im looking for a good thorough guide on building one but not having much luck....may just write my own as i know how and whats needed
Right? I have to drive to the end of the street to make a call. We live in a valley in the middle of Nm, so the mountains don't help.
