Okay guys. I got a Dell Streak and I've been trying like a mad man to replace the stupid weak Dell UI with a Stock Gingerbread ROM. I have tried using Google's ASOP link to collect and compile Gingerbread. But how do I install take that ROM and replace with Dell's UI?
Please would someone help this poor soul, i think we would all like 2.3 on our Streaks.
Thank you for replying. Can someone please in the love of God help me? I followed each and every instruction from Google's AOSP (Android Open Source Program) and I am still having difficulties.
I think majority of us cant help you since nobody successfully installed gingerbread yet as far as we know
I read somewhere in one of DJ Steve's Streakdroid development threads that Gingerbread has changed something with the graphics API which breaks the Streak's screen drivers, as such even he is having a hard time porting full Gingerbread to the Streak.
This is why Streakdroid has several apps from Gingerbread ported (such as themes, the keyboard and the launcher), however the underlying OS is not portable just yet
Times like this I really wish I learnt how to program...
Now that sucks.

**UPDATE**
Brad is doing some amazing work on the Android msm-2.6.32 (froyo) kernel. He still has quite a bit of work ahead of him, but you can follow is development on his site at: http://brad-smith.co.uk/streak/. I think we all would agree that Android 2.2 + Streak = AWESOME!!
I will post more info as it comes in!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I gotta get some sleep, but before I do so, I wanted to share my accomplishment.
With the help of XDA and all of the guys hanging out in freenode/#dellstreak, I have finally got my Dell Streak to boot 1.6 from the Qualcomm's source/AOSP using a compiled kernel.
Nothing works at the moment (i.e. sound, proximity sensor, wifi, bluetooth, ect...), moreover, this is only a proof of concept. The real goal is to get 2.2 (Foyo) booting. If you want to help with development, please visit freenode/#dellstreak IRC. Here are some screen shots... More info to come later...
excellent work
Nice work
WOW!, I don't even know what to say... Congratulations! Really looking forward to all your work.
"All our science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike -- and yet it is the most precious thing we have"
Very Nice! (in Borat voice)
U da maan!!!! thanks for opening the doors of ROM flashing frenzy.
very good job. i was having a play with this myself but couldnt get it to boot
Great work! I'll be following your progress religiously.
yup ill be dropping in helping out esp on froyo builds once we have a good kernel to use as im stronger in porting android than i am building kernels
/me edits signature to add dell streak porting to the list
awesome job
Great work! Hope you have time to update the guide on how to build it soon.
Excellent work! I'm really looking forward to where this goes. If you need any beta-testers later on, hit me up.
My Hat off,Well Done
So what comes next?
I came across this site: h ttp://jaxov.com/2010/03/flash-10-1-preview-on-dell-mini-5-tablet/
Is a demo of the Dell Streak running flash 10.1. Not sure if it is running froyo, but since flash 10.1 runs only on 2.2 I would say it is running 2.2
Would be nice if we could find that rom.
Anyone with a friend inside Adobe ?

So maybe I'm thinking on the wrong track here but if streak there is running flash wouldn't that mean dell had a 'working' 2.2 rom? back in "Posted by Jaxov on March 24, 2010"???
WTB vanilla!
I am really looking forward to not using the Dell UI as well as 2.2
Great work, I would love to buy you some beers

The Streak in the Video is totally out of Dell UI
great work i have been on the forum since before i bought the streak looking for any android developement activity and now its finally making a push, will be greatly anticipating your work.
I am just curious because I just put it on my Motorola Defy today and love it, I can only imagine how it would be on my Streak!!!
you know I just woke up with the same exact question. it's just a shame that my sister's old backflip can sport official support for cm7.1 and the streak doesn't.
I fear the main two reasons are the lack of support from dell (source codes etc) and the lack of developers. I myself am trying to understand how to actually make a rom just for the purpose of porting cm7.1 to the streak...
edit, I just realized that dj steve and fards are back on business with another rom. once those two guys have a rock solid version of gingerbred up and running on the streak, porting cm7.1 will be easy as pie...
I think Dell's strange 'customizations' to the hardware and unreleased source code for some obscure stuff (audio driver is one of the culprits iirc) are the things holding up a CM7 (or MIUI) release; i think a CM7 build could be theoretically done, but it would require lots of work and it might be really hard to get together as a daily usable rom.
Is probably for more than a year that DJ_Steve, fards and others have tried to convince Dell releasing source code for this stuff, but as of now it seems really unlikely we will ever get something.
Dell has released source code for the Dell Streak 5:
http://opensource.dell.com/releases/streak/
Is this incomplete or something that is not usable ?

That is the kernel release, not the heart and soul of the Streak, that is why Steve, Fards, AWD and many others are hand jamming code. The release from the "Friend from the East" has helped, but is not everything they need in one single piece, again requiring more hand jamming of code. However 2.4 beta (Ginger Bread or AKA Ginger Streak)is working like a champ (IMHO).

Well, since cyanogenmod has never been on the steak, there's no way to compare the two. I can tell you that it's awesome on my Aria.

Yes title says everything
Can we have ics or honeycomb
Why dell is not opensourcing the streak 5 drivers
just wait. since dj steve is back there is a small chance...
Yes possibly, ICS is a possibility, forget about honeycomb though.
I dunno, I think dj steve had honeycomb booting on the streak 5. He may do it for the laugh ;-)
Afaik though, honeycomb doesn't have phone capabilities anyhow.

He's been able to boot HC for nearly a year now, but it's never been very useful since many thing didnt work.
Now that ICS is out there's no real reason to attempt to work on HC at all
ICS source code is going to be released soon.
http://www.itworld.com/mobile-wireless/224209/google-serves-android-40-source-code
Once it's released, I"m sure our dominant programmers will be all over it, trying to get ICS for the streak!
if you really want to help the initiative, donate to DJ_Steve's paypal account. He's trying to raise money to upgrade his servers so they can handle the ICS compiling. That would be the biggest help to getting ICS available on the Streak 5.
You can find his donation link here:

DJ_Steve started working on ICS yesterday, for the Dell Streak 7. He fully plans on making it, for the Dell Streak 5, as well.

I still love the Miui projet of Dj Steve, when post the first beta he promise he will take care on this. But. ..
I waiting and check this thread for every day to see a stable Miui version then buy a streak for replace my P100 because the resolution 800x480 of dell is a good choice for all my favorite game. ..But. ..Hope less. ..

Moving to Q&A
if i wanted to port a rom to the streak 5 say ics for example, where would i start , and what software would i need etc, i have a lot of spare time after work so might aswell try and learn something while im at it
any help is appreciated
The drivers are the biggest issue in porting ROMs to the Streak. Even if you did get the required hardware and software you almost certainly would have to create drivers from scratch because the company that made the Streak for Dell won't release the source code. Something not nearly as easy as you might think. I believe DJ_Steve has been trying to create ICS for the Streak 5 with little success so far.
how about if i just wanted to create my own version of 2.3?
You would probably be better off taking the released version, 407, and making edits to it then repackage. There is a kitchen created by dsixda (at least I think that's the name) here on XDA. It doesn't list the steak as one it works for, but it does.

Hey
Finally the BBM is out on android
Is there any way to install it on the dell streak.
Really want to use it.....?????.....
Not unless you're rooted. See, you have to change your ROM to the ICS ROM in Android Development, then install BBM through the Play Store. BBM only works on ICS and up, and only if the device has a screen 7" or less.

I have been through many ics roms in android development
according to you which is the best ics rom available? the one which is most stable?
I don't believe any of the ICS ROMs are truly stable enough for everyday use. Too many issues, such as no data connection.

EVERYBODY wants ICS on this device. But had you bothered to search the forums here you would have discovered that there are significant hurdles to be overcome to get ICS on the Streak. Until these hurdles are overcome, ICS is not going to happen.
One of the devs from the early days is attempting to get ICS working, but that may never happen either. Honestly, by the time it does happen I will have moved on to either a Galaxy Note or (most likely) a Nexus 5. So even if I had sufficient skill to work on an ICS port, I don't have any inclination to do so, especially when an (overdue) device upgrade looms large for moi.

i don't think dell streaks hardware is compatible with ICS, i also have dell streak, and i want bbm too on it, wonder how to get it, if ICS is possible on it, please give me any link to root the device and install ICS on it.
Actually, the hardware is perfectly compatible with ICS as there are other single-core devices of the same vintage running at least ICS. The problem with the Streak has always been the fact that certain drivers were always closed source, making it almost impossible to get a fully functional port. This is why the ICS ROMs in Development only partly work.
If I had knowledge that would change this situation, I would have already shared it. Since I don't, pray that the guy supposedly working on backporting BBM to Gingerbread (link) comes through.
EDIT: The user that claimed to have backported BBM to Gingerbread was banned. The only differences between the two files were a change in the Minimum SDK version in the file manifest and some graphical changes.
