[Q] New Eris Sub-Forum - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today (Aug. 8th) a new Sub-Forum was added for the Eris, as a result I moved many threads, if you find yours is missing from its spot look there first before PM'ing me.
Thanks,

I was just wondering where this sub-forum is, if it still exists, what it's called, what it's contents are, et cetera. I can't find it!? I go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=551 and I still see the same old five sub-forums.
I even looked in all the sub-forums and I can't find any sub-sub-forums. Am I missing anything? ::

lol...TRW (or is it WRT? ), I think it is the Q&A subforum that we are in now...

Hehe... it's WrT, thank you! TRW is a trucking company, I think, and WRT is an open-source firmware for, among others, the LinkSys WRT54G/GS/GL routers. Well, dd-WRT. 20+ years ago I would've typed this whole response in reverse, too.
Normally I would agree with you, but the Q&A subforum already existed. Am I on acid?
Shrug! Oh well... LOL!
Edit: I AM on acid. I know I saw the notice about the new subforum in two different places, and I could've sworn in one of the places that it was a brand new post. How I missed the date in the post I quoted above, I don't know. I gotta quit posting while before I get some sleep.
Thanks for humoring me!

official GPS fix

What is ASUS doing to resolve the defective GPS on every Prime? Is it going to be a software/firmware fix or are they going to physically replace something? They did acknowledge the issue by now surely correct?
Why the heck do you need a new thread...we got the other one perfectly fine...this isn't a FIX...misleading title!
Yeah, I feel dooped.
Seriously, I thought you had an "OFFICIAL FIX" and since you don't have one this thread is completely useless!!! Please close this thread and have everything put in the other GPS thread!!

Too many pages to sift through and no answers.
So you expect an answer to magically appear here since there isn't one in the other thread? I don't mean to be a d!ck, but this makes no sense!

I didnt read through all 20 pages just the last 3
Would the mods consider closing or merging this thread.
Next time you post a question, please prefix a "Q:" on the title. The post is very misleading.
And the other posters are right, there is already a thread on this topic. Mods should merge or delete this thread.
Jason
This thread has a horribly misleading title. There is no 'official GPS fix'.
The OP posted this exact same question in the GPS issues thread and received answers but decided to make his own thread about the same issue. The OP doesn't want to read through the many pages in that thread to get the info he seeks, then why are you on the forums if you don't want to read the info about an issue that you have.
Closing as there is already another thread about this same issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404646

SEARCH FIRST: BEFORE Posting a New Thread

So you have a question. We've all had them. In fact, many have had the exact same question you have right now. And most of those questions have already been answered. So please search for those answers before posting a new thread.
Now that the dust has settled with the unlocking, ICS leak, mainver and OTA, most likely there's already a guide written to deal with the exact same issue you want to ask about.
Not only will you get your answer more quickly, you will also keep from cluttering up the message board with yet another thread asking the same thing others have asked and have answered already.
Lately there has been a plethora of new threads asking basic questions that have been answered many times and definitely have guides already written and it gets increasingly frustrating to have to see these over and over again.
So please, search first. Research. Read. And then if you really can't find the answer post in an appropriate existing thead. If there really isn't one, then start a new thread.
Thank you and good night. You've been a great audience.
The worst offenders aren't gonna see this and post anyway. They won't even read stickies usually

Of course he is right.
Seriously, there had to be a bunch of people who have just purchased this phone recently. I'm sure the sale that Big Red is having isn't going to help things. I love that people are getting this phone because it's just amazing, but people do need to read everything before they just start posting questions. And they need to read everything before they start flashing crap on their phones. Just because you did it on one phone doesn't mean you'll know what you're doing on this one. Ou S-On, Dev Unlocked Rezound is a different beast altogether.

I came from a Droid X and before I picked up the rezound, figured all android devices were the same! Boy was I wrong This has been a learning curve but in time Ive learned a LOT from reading all of the threads in this forum.I've only had a single mainver error, which was easily remedied. Other than that, I've been a flashaholic for the last 2 weeks trying to find something that feels like home and I still havent bricked my phone . The guys/gals in this forum who post fixes and guides are all badass!

It's all good man.
The funny part is, I completely agree with you and this thread. I'm actually a little ashamed that I didn't find you're thread originally.
Really though, thanks to you and all the other devs that do all this hard work. I'd really like to be able to spend the time and learn how to do some of the Rom development, or theme dev'ing, or something to contribute. Not in the cards though with a busy job as a software support tech, and a 3 year old and another on the way at home. Time isn't on my side for hobbies like this. So, to get to the point - thanks a lot, much appreciated.
Its actually getting to the point that searching for stuff ends up a waste of time due to the clutter. You know how many threads have something to do with the mainver issue alone in General? Almost a hundred. That is insane. And some people wonder why others get grumpy when they don't use a search function. What would be awesome if we added extra code to the site and when the hit the Start Thread button, it asks them if they did a search.
It will show a list of other threads with the same words in the title, but they aren't just from the Rezound forums. But as con mentioned, the people who don't search aren't going to look at those either.

You mean like when there are about 9 different threads going at the same time to tell everybody that "Sense sucks" ???
the only problem is, if your browsing these forums via your rezound, search doesnt work properly. if you tap on the "search" button, once the pop up appears and you try to enter text, the pop up disappears and you cant search. it does that on both dolphin hd & opera. dont recall if ive tried on another browser.... but as it happens on more then 1, its not a problem from one particular browser.

[Q] Problem with the 10 post rule

Hey,
So I have been a regular visitor to this site for about 2 years now ever since I first rooted my HTC desire.
I have downloaded and tested many custom ROM's for the desire and the SGS2.
My recent favorite ROM is resurrection remix which i have been using various builds of since xmas. And only now do I have a question that no one has asked and I cant find an answer to.
Of course since I have never needed to post before when I tried to ask my question it wont let me because i have not made 10 useful comments. The only place I find useful comments is on the development forums. There is nothing specifically that I need from the other ares of the site and so I cannot offer any feedback that would be helpful to others there... the only place I can make useful comments is on the development forums, which is exactly where Im not allowed to make them.
So how does one get around that?
Luke
Probably not, but you can try contacting a moderator, the rule is there to avoid people joining and spamming the dev section with crap, if that isnt your plan they may be able to help you out.

I'm in the same boat bud. Hopefully we will get one day to ask questions in the normal thread. Can't wait.

Personally and apart from the spam issue the ten post thread in dev section is far to low a number one only has to read the inane posts from users with more than ten posts in many dev threads .
But how do you overcome the problem of a large amount of idiots posting who cannot be bothered to read the rules read the faqs or instructions and repetitively ask the same questions .it reflects badly on those who like the OP have taken time to read and learn as they are treated the same .
jje
That rule also stopped me in my tracks. But I can see the point on the development forums.
After the "no you can't" it encouraged me to look harder for answers and ask the (dum) questions on the general forum.
I realize the point is to avoid opening new threads for questions that might be better served in the appropriate development thread, but if you've searched and haven't found your answer I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to post one in Q&A or General, but make sure you exhausted all search options before you do.
Same for me...To be honest I wanted to answer questions and help members, not to ask myself but... I see the point of the rule, there are too many people that will ask (dum) Q without even bothering to use the search tool and filling the threads with crap when there is no need to...
Solution:
make thread about it.
Answer all who replys
Profit

Unfortunately, there will be some people (a minority) affected by this rule who probably shouldn't be (those who wouldn't post crap to dev threads from the get go), but at the end of the day it goes some way to reducing the mountains of crap which get posted to dev threads every day (at least 75% of posts in my experience. I'm probably being generous).
Again unfortunately (for the people who would do the right thing if this rule wasn't in place), no system is perfect in this regard. Frankly, I'd rather have the current system in place as opposed to making things open slather. Changing the current rule would make an already bad situation even worse IMHO.
Edit to add - As was suggested on the first page of this thread, you can always plead your case to a mod if you think the rule shouldn't apply to you for whatever reason.
Further edit - Poster above me. Your recent post in Q&A is a prime example of the type of post which should not be cluttering a dev thread. It is a general question, and not specific to a particular rom.

A great example of the mountains of crap that spew out of many of the users (if you look in there I'm sure I'm guilty too) in this forum, check out the CM9 discussion thread, imagine if that was in the dev thread, how would codeworkx and the others ever find anything that might be relevant?
Find 10 noobs to help in Q&A section, help said noobs, done.

This is true too, when I started I felt handcuffed by the 10 post limit, but I spent a little time reading posts and using the knowledge I gained to help out others and my post (and thanks) count quickly increased well beyond the limit. Helping others also gave me more understanding to be able to troubleshoot my own problems.
Yep that's exactly right Thracemerin, a perfect example.
I dread getting home from work & having to scroll thru 18 hrs worth/sometimes up to 40 pages of posts in the CM9 discussion thread & 90% of them are utter crap.
You're right, if it were in the dev thread, I think Codeworkx, Xplodwild et al would have given up ages ago.

Apologies I stand corrected, I thought it would be ROM related as the only info I could find through search was about adding poweron.ogg to system/etc and making sure permissions are set correctly and this is not working for me.

I can see the point to it cutting down a number of people who would make useless comments, although the development forums are still littered with idiots who type before they think or even look around for a solution.

In the stickies on this forum is help for rebooting prooblems and so you think you've bricked your phone. Yet there constantly appears postings about phone rebooting and Please Help I've Bricked My Phone, and by far most of these it is the poster's first posting.
Maybe the rule should be that you cannot start a new thread, in any forum, until you have 10 posts. Every forum has a FAQ thread that they can post on if they have searched on here and can't find anything.

We need to create a rollup sticky thread.

The number of stickies in this forum is just insane. I think we should create a roll up sticky to include all the stickies in this forum so it doesn't get cluttered with too much information.
Here's an example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1096
I'll look into it.

I personally mentioned this before as well. Would be much apreciated.
Too many stickies are annoying.
Would suggest three roll-up stickies,
. Super-sticky (always on top): READ THIS FIRST! MODERATION AND YOU!
This would subsume the "New Forum Mod", "Questions posted in General...", "Operation Iron Fist"
. Sticky: Official Asus Threads
All threads started by Gary Key
. Sticky: Guides and How-Tos
All help threads
Suggest unsticky the "GPS Dongle" thread, as well as the outdated "Come to #Asus-Transformer..." thread.

for me too many threads on dongles and 300 are the most annoying. i say get rid of all 300 related threads. its not a prime and this is prime forum. if anything, stick all those threads in the OG transformer section aka tf-101, since that is what the 300 replaced. or move them all to the QnA section.
the sticky threads aren't the problem. the problem is 300 threads and complaint threads that new people make instead of just posting in a thread that already addresses that issue. people not using search at all.
A simple roll up sticky thread would do the trick as well as an active mod who locks down those threads as they pop up.
Conferring with other Forum Mods before I make the roll up sticky.

This is a great idea. While you're there could you delete a few of the threads that contain nothing but moaning and complaining lol . I'm actually pretty happy with my Prime, apart from the crappy way ASUS did the bootlaoder unlock (NVFlash will make me a lot happier though if that actually materializes). But a trip in to the General forum generally leaves me pretty depressed. Can't you put something at the top that says "Apparently a lot of people have not being having great RMA experiences, please stop posting about it"!?

If we're removing such threads... can we remove the:
1. Asus, Nvidia, and Transformer Prime are simply the best in the World thread.
it won't happen. no one wants to see repeated complaint threads that could've easily been put into existing threads already on the issue. people had 5 months worth of complaint threads. its time prime forum move in a different direction. we already heard the gripes. no reason to keep trying to shove it down peoples throats. we already heard them the first time. its mostly the same people repeatedly posting the same complaints almost daily. if people used search more, there wouldn't be as many of those threads.
The Positive Movement has already begun. People want to come here to learn more about their device and be in a positive atmosphere. Possible issues with device is important also. But 20 different complaint threads on same issue is far from needed. Maybe some like forum to seem depressing but I'm sure most don't. As proof is shown from outrage against constant complaints or gripes. I see it all the time up here now.
If its not some new issue that's never been reported before, a new thread shouldn't need to be made about it. or stick it in QnA section at least. Post about it in an existing thread already. SEARCH box is a powerful tool.

I think these are good points by both of you. I find myself spending hardly any time in the general forum these days since the repeated posts (both positive and negative) and constant trolling just makes it boring. Personally, I do find the repeated negative posts more annoying since each makes me worried about my $650 investment!

agreed but problem more so with redundant complaint threads on same issue. redundant threads on something good is far n few.
MORAL & POINT IS: People need to use search box more. Redundant threads, whether positive or negative is clutter. post in thread already made on the issue unless its something new. New threads, whether positive or negative, is not needed if there is already an existing thread on that same issue or subject. Once this happens, the backlash will cease against those redundant complaint threads or even positive ones.

[Guide/Info] What you need to include to get help

I have noticed that people in the q and a section are not posting nearly enough information in their post or title to get the information they need. This causes people to ask lots of questions and delay getting the answer they need. So this guide will show you what you need to include in your post to get the most efficient answer to your question.
We'll start with the Title:
- Please do not just say "HALP, PHONE BROKE" or "HELP" , etc.
- You need to be precise, and describe what you're looking for in your thread.
Next, the information you need to state before you even get into asking your question.
- The make of your phone. There are many different variants of your device. I9100 G/M/P/T
- Are you rooted/unrooted?
- What rom you are using? And which version? -and- What kernel are you using? And which version?
- Have you flashed any mods/scripts/themes?
- Have you changed DPI? If yes, to what?
- Have you done anything to try to solve your issue? This would be very valuable information.
- Please (if on stock firmware) dial *#1234# and post the results (thanks to fxrb)
Then you can ask your question.
- Do not ask "What rom/kernel/theme is the best?" -or- Something that you have not searched for (it is infact very obvious if you havent)
- Be specific and precise in what you want/need. Do not write a 10, 000 word essay, or a 3 word question.
- Pictures say a 1000 words
Important things to remember:
- Be polite: People never want to help someone who wont appreciate it, or is rude to them. Remember your p's and q's
- Do not bump your thread: It gets annoying and against the rules
This is under construction and will take a bit to include all of the information needed. I know there are lots of more experienced users than I, and would love feedback of what to include. Please do not hesitate to post in the thread or even PM me with information you think needs to be included in this thread.
Stickies
- DO NOT POST A "What's the best ROM/Kernel/Theme?" THREAD!
- [Newbies][Experienced Users][RCs] New members friendly Q&A thread
- [KERNEL][REF][Q&A] Siyah 5.0+[ICS/CM10] 6.0b5+[JB/CM10.1] +DISCUSSION+. NON-DEV!!!

- SGS2 Canadian Thread (Bell/Virgin/Sasktel/Rogers) Root/Unlock/Firmware/Modems/Mods

The thought is nice... but unless this is stickied (and even then), this thread will fall off the first page, and since the vast majority of n00bs (not new members, but "n00bs" - there's a huge difference) won't search, they won't see it.
Heck, there have been dozens of posts since you posted this that have been terribly short of any information.
But I applaud the thought.
You have to think how them noobs operate. They muck up their phone, stick the symptoms in a google search, and want an answer asap.
So they are not going to spend hours reading rules and stickies or use the search function.
I spent a week reading about stuff for the x10i I had before I decided to do anything to it.That way at least I had half an idea what helpers were talking about when/if I got into trouble.
When I joined this forum the s2 looked a lot more complicated and the forum looked a lot more "vicious"(like give that guy 20xlashes since he didnt do a search).
Its a tough world lol

Yea, but we have to try. At least now we have something to guide them to and for the new people to refer to. If we dont at least have a guide for how to get good answers to their questions theirs no standard.. Now there is
Nice thread
hope users follow this
Doubt many people will take notice of this (for a whole host of reasons; don't get me started), but props for trying (thanked OP).
Edit - Oops. Sorry. So used to giving crap threads on here one star I did it to yours accidentally (intended to give it 5).
+1 to search first before posting.

Yeah, but now we have something to refer the horrible q and a posts that have no info to. And dont worry about the rating... it happens
Do you have anything to add to it? It feels like I''m missing something
Oh absolutely. As I said, good that you've tried, I just don't see it making any difference is all. 90% of people who post here are idiots, that won't change.
No, nothing to add. I think you've covered it well.

in relation to search and read before asking questions...
just wanted to share that I've got a nicely setup dualboot with the siyah kernel, RootBox JB 2.1 as my second rom successfully patched with the autopatcher 1.6 and a fully working pdroid. That's it...
Since i have less than 10 posts I cannot thank the developers in their respective threads (at least that's how i get the message). I think this is my 5th post so I guess i never make it to the developers section because i really don't know what questions i can ask and, answers i could give are all answered...
this must be a "new member" problem rather than a n00b one?
Regards and 1 post closer

Yeah, but don't just get 10 posts just to say "thank you" in the rom Dev section. I van personally say that devs hate this as it clogs up the thread and doesn't add anything to anything. That is why xda has the thanks button, and the devs appreciate that more than saying it. In fact, it you really want to say thank you donate to them. Even if its 1 euro they will be very grateful.

course not it was kind of a semi-sarcastic post, I have more to say than thanks I spent countless hours reading and learning stuff (in general, it is fun after all!) and as far as this forum is concerned (which is really helpful btw!) it's difficult to then act (for the time being!). Example: Somehow I managed to post in a developer's thread 1-2 months ago, first a problem then I found the solution and posted it myself. I then got PMed by someone asking me for help. Only problem is I never got an email notification in spite of having a thread subscription so I didn't bother to check my PMs. As for donating, absolutely.
Regards and 4 more to go

OK awesome. I'm used to people who just want to say thanks, so I have to mention something like that. But taking a look at your sign up date, of looks like you might be able to post in the Dev section without having 10 posts. I believe if you signed up before a certain date you don't need the posts. And of looks like you might fit in there. I would try it you never know
Edit: but enough off topic

just tested again and it seems to work now
thx for letting this off-topic slide
All the best!

Sadly I agree to everybody believing that this thread will not be read by those who should do so, sorry. However, if by accident just one out of thousand will read it then there will be 'only' 999 bad questions remaining - a small progress.
For this one out of thousand I would like to contribute something to the information section of this thread. For basic information I often ask people to dial *#1234# and post the result. As this thread is in the Galaxy SII forum this should work, at least as long as people are on stock firmware (probably use this conditionally ?).
