I wanna overclock so bad. - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When the source is released will the kernels be better to overclock?
I wanna. But my phone freezes as soon as I exit setcpu

Source has been released. For kernal anyway. Eugenes kernal is build from source.

Yes I flashed today and can run 1.2ghz!
Wow!

I don't care as long as I can overclock a galaxy s like my nexus s doesny freeze at 1.4 ghz my vibrant freezes at 1.4 ghz
Why?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

That's weird. I've got a 1.4GHz overclock on my Vibrant and it works just fine.
Could be something you have on your phone?

Obviously there are inconsistencies amongst our cpu chips. Moral: don't bother overclocking. It is a bad idea for day-to-day use, considering there is no additional cooling.

It's just the nature of CPUs. Manufactured in the exact same way, different models will still suffer varying results, hence binning.

Overclocking.

When will we be able to O.C our phones?. I heard the kernel source was released already. Is someone working on this? Will someone please inform me on what's going on. Thanks

So far, there is only one kernel that allows you to OC on 2.3.4, but you can only OC stably to 1.3 at the time. The developer who made the kernel just had a kid and said he was going to take a break for about 2 weeks until things get back to normal, and that was about a week ago. I've been running the kernel for over a week now and it works great.
Check the thread I started here if you're interested:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255659

Check this quadrant

Stock rom rooted w/ Entropy's Daily driver kernel at 1.6ghz
Not too shabby!
Quadrants are useless. There are ways to cheat it and get you're scores above 8k.
Swyped on my Galaxy SII
They are useless. That being said...
Overclocked to 1.6

Worthless or not, I am still impressed.
I really wish quadrant didn't exist to prevent threads like these.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
no, THIS is impressive
but i agree, quadrant is pointless
Quadrant isnt totally useless as it can show benefits of overclocking. But for the most part it seems linpack is the way to go.

Is there any way to port over the infuse 4g's kernel?

just wondering, considering it has 429 mb of available ram stock.
If the talon kernel can be ported over by Simone for the vibrant, is it possible to port over the kernel for the infuse?
340mb is nice, but 429 would be even nicer.
Any input would be appreciated. I am not a dev, so I wouldn't know where to start. Just wondering if this is a possibility.

You can't magically create ram you don't have. Even though the infuse kernel has.more userland memory, it (I'm assuming) has more built in memory as well. And the two are way to different in the first place to even try to port...

If you look at the specs, it's got 512 ram, just like the vibrant, and any other galaxy s variant. So it's just the amount of usable ram. And the talon kernel is a port from an I9000 and/or AT&T captivate...so why wouldn't someone be able to port the infuse kernel?
Here are the specs:

Because it's an infuse and not a captivate/i9k, that's why you can't port it..

It was wasn't it? But he is on an HTC, not an infuse or even an i9000.
Fact is, the kernel probably could be ported over to a vibrant especially since the infuse can take advantage of hspa+
But the hardware internally is probably a lot different. You wouldn't Need to port the whole kernel prolly. Just got to figure how it manages its ram.

[Q] Possible mods from the xoom?

Would it be possible to bring some of the Mods from the Motorola Xoom over to the photon? As far as i can see they have the same hardware so why could we not bring the overclock kernels over?
I'm a bit of a noob so don't kill me if it sounds stupid.

Haven't really looked at the mods the xoom has but there are a couple OC kernals. Im on one put put by joker, goes to 1.3

The xoom has s kernel to OC at 1.7, and my xoom runs 1.5 no problem

While they are both tegra 2, its not the same chip. The zoom's tegra is bigger to handle heat better because the gpu is overclocked in the zoom. If we had the same chip then yes but sadly no

Theres a 1.4

We should be able to port some of the apps back and forth, such as the task manager we have and some other apps, right?

I think it would be possible with the quad core 2gb ram model as it has the same specs as the note 2 and that has been seen at 2ghz
im what Willis was talking about
Feel free to try it but I have a feeling that the phone will reboot because of overheating buy try it and let us know...
Intact why the f would you want it a 2ghz our phones are phones not blumming computers ... most mobile games don't even touch our phone... but like I said try it ... it would be a gimmick type thing
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Mine reboot after 1.8ghz so wouldn't recommend it
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Personally i would say you can but i think that would be pushing it a little bit, a friend of mine has his at 1.7ghz and its not buggy or laggy so probably no higher then 1.7
Hope i helped if i did please click the "Thanks" button
When s4 is coming, it would probably have 8-cored processor. So when it does, can s3 compete with it...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Siyah Kernel allow up to 1.8Ghz . I believe it is possible however I do not believe it's safe. Overclocking that much might cause the device to over heat not forgetting the Battery drain issue that you will be facing as the battery isn't optimized to endure that power .

But you can only use quad at any one time on that processor as well.

Did you underclock it? Would love to try 1.8, but it never worked for me..

Myn also runs smooth on 1.8.
Have it for 3 months now without anny probs.
Everything in sttweaks like it is only oc. to 1.8 so no ov.
Temp always around 35 degrees Celsius and white heavy apps like navigation sometimes around the 48 degrees.

How did you manage to run it smoothly at 1.8ghz?...i tried that but it just kept freezing everytime.
Not every phone is the same. I have gotten a 1.92 GHz on my old Captivate. Not a lot of people could even get close to me.

Because
If @Yank555 or anyone that knows how to build/modify kernel could make a kernel with 2ghz, I would be happy to test it

This has nothing to do with the original post, but is there any known issues running the s3 in 1.6 GHz for daily use?
thx
No, all works fine.
In 1.8 it starts to get laggy.

Sweet. Thanks for answer :good:
Will try to set it to 1.6 than, and hope for good results
