Hello,
I have been searching for an widget that will simply turn auto brightness to on or if I press it again will turn backlight completely off but I haven't found it.
There is already similar widget but it also sets backlight to max, which is really annoying to me!
Why I need this?
Whenever I turn on my Desire during night backlight is too strong for me when set to auto, so that is why I need this simple widget that will turn auto backlight on or on another press will simple turn backlight off
+1 for this.
I can't see a way to do it in AnyCut either. If anyone has been successful please let me know
Bump!
Anybody has little time to make this widget?
Now that the Power Control widget in Froyo includes auto-brightness in its cycle of brightnesses, is the apk floating around? Would be a nice addition for the po'folk who don't have (and probably won't get) Froyo.
Brightness Profiles
I got this app a couple of days ago... i think its just what you're looking for, its called Brightness Profiles.
you can either search it on android market or scan the QR code I've attached. hopefully it works:
Mippin Apps
Check out the Dimmer app from Mippin. They made a battery widget with quick toggles for gps/wifi/bt/display but this dimmer turns it down to 10(20 less than standard 0* of display settings). If you're looking for an automated time scheduler, check out timeriffic.

Thanks for suggesting Timeriffic. It doesn't do exactly what the OP requested but if the need is time based control of brightness it does a great job.
I have seen a huge battery savings with managing brightness carefully throughout the day. Is by far the number 1 cause of battery drain.
Anyone tried this app yet? It seems to be able to do... um... everything?! Ha! I am interested to see what custom profiles and tasks people have set up in theirs!

You can download a 14-day trial from the developers website:

(it is £3.99 in the market for the full version)
Wow, I would have normally glazed right over this. For some reason I read the articles and this is pretty cool. I started thinking of a bunch of uses for it. I bought it outright. Thanks for the post, moonrock!
Welcome!
I noticed in the wiki or forum (somewhere!) that they were able to set up a profile that remapped the camera button -- I am wondering if this can be used to remap the power button while the camera app is open, maybe?
So I haven't had much time to play with Tasker, but the two scripts I have currently running:
* Silence from 11pm > 8am, simple, but it replaced the other 'profiles' type apps
* Disable screen rotation when in the Kindle app, for whatever reason this isn't an option in the Kindle app itself.
I have it set to turn on my Bluetooth when plugged in and off when unplugged works great!

Fantastic! I need to set up a (again, simple!) task that will turn on bluetooth in the times that I am always in my car (commute to work and home, same time every day) which won't be difficult.
I have Locale already, but this may replace it (gotta love paying for apps to find out another one does 10000x more things! oops!) I've had Locale since first getting my G1 though, so it's gotten plenty of use.
So glad you posted about this app... its amazing..

I have a couple tasks set up. First, I have gps automatically turn on and off when entering and exiting google maps. I also have one that lets me pick input style when I go into or leave remotedroid (swype's backspace doesn't work in it). And I have a couple apps that like to hang around after I close them, so I set them to be killed upon closing.
All in all it's a great app, well worth the $6.

Also worth noting is that it is £3.49 from the developer directly (paypal, via his website) and a larger % goes direct to him that way.
I have it setup for text to speech on SMS messages when my phone connects to my cars bluetooth.
I am trying to find a way to let my replay to said SMS with the voice to text feature or just ignore it. Anyone have any idea how to accomplish that?
Also think it would be cool to have it change my wallpaper based on the weather conditions in my area, but Im not sure how to go about doing that either.

Beautiful Widgets (paid app, couple bucks) and the (free) Beautiful Live Wallpaper. Uses the weather widget to make the wallpaper match the weather
Tasks that I've set up so far:
Silent / dim screen / timeout / alarm volume 7 while I am asleep (timed task)
Vibrate / auto brightness / timeout (slightly longer) while at work (timed task)
Bluetooth on while in my car (timed task -- specificlly during the hours of my work commute)
Load Vlingo when Bluetooth connects, Kill Vlingo when BT disconnects
GPS on when Maps, Navigation and Foursquare are opened
Display timeout (1hr) and brightness (max) when USB plugged in (for when i am in my car, typically listening to music and/or have vlingo up on the screen, annoying (and worthless) for the display to timeout if vlingo is supposed to be a one-touch process!)
Anyway of exporting a profile then importing it so some of the more advanced useres can create some and we can tweak them ?
Edit: Having hard time getting them to do what i want .
Probably, but I am not entirely sure how... lol
My initial use:
As previously mentioned on this board the bluetooth streaming volume is not the loudest, so I always end up turning up the volume for bluetooth. Then when I plugin my headphones I destroy my eardrums.
So I setup a task that when I connect to my bluetooth car stereo, it automatically sets the volume to max and turns off wifi for good measure.
I have another task that when I plugin headphones, it sets the volume to 60% and opens the doubletwist music player.
Finally I setup the standard battery task so that when my battery gets to 20% it turns of all the GPS, wifi, and bluetooth radios, as well as dimming my screen.

Ah, I keep meaning to setup the low battery task as well!
I have two keyboards i really like in 2 different orientations.
Droid X keyboard:
its sweet autocorrections and large real estate makes it ideal for two thumb typing in landscape
swype:
slower than droid X keyboard in landscape, but in portrait, this is possibly the fastest/most accurate keyboard around.
I tried to set it up so that i could change my keyboards depending on the orientation, but i could not figure it out
im also for an app that turns your screen off with a timer (in the background). and have that work when you turn your screen downward./
any with either of these would be greatly appreciated.
Anyone know how to make it so that the Incall volume goes up to max on the connect of the phone call? I cant seem to find it in the settings meeting seems to only answer on 3/4 volume. Thought Tasker might be able to .
This app is awesome. I only got a few tasks setup but one nice one is turning the screen timeout to 23hr when I open the web browser and back to 30 secs when I exit.

To export a profile tap the context (left) icon <profile<export. To import just open the file with Tasker as the chosen program I think. lots of premade tasks on the Tasker wiki. (it won't let me post a link)
Tasker is nice, but it'd take a few weeks to set up just one profile and it's confusing as all hell. I just need something to set my phone to vibrate while I'm at work, and turn on 4G, and disable 4G when I get home(all time based, I don't need locale) and turn on wifi and ringer volume all the way up.
So is there a more simple app that can preform the more basic actions of tasker?
I use something called quick profile. I manually change it when I get in and out of the car, but I have 2 profiles. "car" and "out of car" car turns off wifi and turns bluetooth on and makes some adjustments to the brightness and volumes. it's really simple and very quick. the paid version will let you make shortcuts to profiles on your home screen, but...I don't mind the extra click. hope that help.
I've been using "Setting Profiles". Allows for setting changes based on locations, time of day, day of week, actions (like in the car dock or connected to a specific bluetooth device). Was pretty easy to set up.
I've also use "Llama"...functions similarly and also not difficult to setup.
Two questions, mainly an is it just me set of questions:
My phone lags when you first hit the power button to wake it up, mostly only the first time, but it's for over a second and it's kind of disconcerting. Is this normal? I noticed it stock and on Beans now. Is there something that can be done, or am I just the weird one...
Lightflow doesn't work very well. It doesn't control sounds worth a damn, and the quiet hours feature is afu. Just wanted to see if I'm doing it wrong...
The lockscreen wake lag is normal, people say it's the deep sleep that the phone goes into to save power.
Light flow doesn't work, but Light Manager works very well - it's free and on the play store.
EDIT - saw that you were talking about sounds controls and quiet hours - didn't know Lightflow had that stuff. I use profiles for that sort of thing. You can easily create Quick Commands for things like "home" "work" "car" and "night." I find this feature really useful, because with one swipe of the pen and a quick drawing of a symbol, it'll change settings for sound, bluetooth, wifi, allshare cast, gps, mobile data, etc. all at once.
I'm wondering if there's a way (app or manual edit of system files) to make the hardware buttons less used to keep them from getting soft
and for that I'm mainly focusing on the power button as it is frequently used, I have two ideas:
- taking the gesture from the new M8 which is by double tapping the screen, if you're a developer please tell me if it's possible to take that function from the M8 maybe edit it and make it work on the One Max!
- We have a great special thing called fingerprint scanner, and since it's not that good at identifying the owner's fingerprint but always works at identifying fingerprints of people, maybe we can use it to wake up screen by simply swiping the finger over it!
So here is my question and here are my ideas, if you have a good answer for me please share it in the comments!
Thanks XDA!
Also looking for a way to do it, but in my case the reason is my power button stopped working and the only way to wake the device is by plugging a charger. What could I use else before having it fixed by service?
for switching off i use nova launcher with the app "screen off and lock"
DoubleTap on screen now the max going off. (i do this with all phones)
But switching on with doubleTap i always searching how it can work. I have
no idea
my understanding is that without a modded kernel, turning screen ON with touchscreen taps is a no go.
an alternate is to use something like the xposed sense 6 toolkit feature "wake screen with volume buttons". granted it still uses hardware buttons, but at least the power button wont have to take as much "abuse" anymore.
for turning screen off, sense 6 tookit offers gestures on the homescreen. i have mapped swipe down to screen off.
i vaguely remember reading about another xposed mod that can map double tap on status bar to screen off.
just my 2 cents!
edit: i m using another xposed mod called "sense 6 lockscreen mods" that enables double tap to screen off on the lockscreen.

Try WTN by Wolandsoft. Works perfect for me. I was looking for a way to turn on the phone in the car while driving. This works perfectly.

Try AutoScreenOnOff

Even better than WTN that I recommended. Just found this one last night. A lot smoother.
