[Q] super manager :( - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

when i downloaded super manager on the market and i was enabling root function it says my device is not supported?..(Vibrant) because i was following this steps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925400 so that i could root my phone.. any suggestions or the easiest way to root it?

no.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028&highlight=superoneclick
go there
and follow the instructions where it is quoted and it says 1. Download the attached zip and rename to: update.zip
2. On your device, navigate to Settings > Applications > USB settings and select Mass storage
3. Plug your device into your computer, select mount USB from your device's pull-down window
4. Copy the update.zip to the INTERNAL SD memory (~14gb on this drive, not the one w/ Avatar if you've still got the 2gb SD card in)
5. Turn your phone off.
6. Hold down volume up and volume down while powering on the phone, this should get you to a recovery menu, you may have to try this a few times.
7. In Recovery menu select 'Reinstall Packages' (use vol_down then power to select)
the update.zip is in the post above the quote.

oh i tried that before that's only for 2.1 eclair right and it failed because i upgraded mine to 2.2 and yeah im so hard up on how to root my im confused now being a noob .

you said you followed this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925400
Did you download Super One Click root and do it? and after that was there a app called "SUPERUSER" on your phone?
if app superuser is on phone, you are rooted.
when you were using the app that said its not compatible, are you sure it was because of root?

ok bro.. thank you i'll wait for that !

yes sir.. i did that,i clicked root but when i try to see if its done already the window just said (NOT RESPONDING) and im using windows 7. do i have to run as admin? or i have to enable usb debugging? coz i plugged my phone into my computer already...

you want to try a new ROM?
You will need:
ROM MANAGER
Titanium Backup
Use Titanium backup to save any/all of your apps installed so you can use it on other roms. don't save the apps that are labeled red.
In ROM MANAGER
Click "flash clockwork recovery" its the first option.
Now download the ROM and put it in the SD CARD
Reboot into recovery mode now. If you can't or don't know how, theres a option in ROM Manager
After your there, it should be in BLUE text. if its in GREEN skip a few steps here, but if its in blue, click reinstall packages, it will reboot.
click reinstall packages anyways... now continue if you were in green, now it will be in Green text recovery.
USE VOLUME BUTTONS TO GO UP AND DOWN, AND POWER AS OKAY BUTTON
Click INSTALL ZIP SOMETHING
then again the second option INSTALL ZIP
and then find your rom in your SD Card
click it.
Now Click OKAY INSTALL
wait for it to finish
done.
Any roms to recommend?
Nero is old. Get with Bionix.
These are the best roms out and i suggest you try them all, and find the one thats for you.
Bionix
Flagship
Axura
Trigger
are currently the most popular.
I use axura and flagship back and forth.
Bionix is just not for me, but may be for you since your from NERO.

so axura is better than bionix? hmm.. is there a voodoo on that? because i've heard that voodoo is a lag fixer and its cool. so for you whats better on vibrant axura or bionix? i dont know anything about this haha i'm barely starting but thank you!

NEW mytouch slide root

hi... this post is for those who wants to root the mytouch quickly and easily without even using a computer. these directions will be step by step, because i know how frustrating it is when someone gives a broken step expecting you to fill in the blanks.
note
im not responsible for what happens to your phone. i am simply showing you hope when all else fails. now lets get started.
ALL CREDIT GOES TO CLOCKWORK FOR HIS UNBELIEVABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE ANDROID COMMUNITY. THANK YOU
first things first, you need a mytouch slide, your phone charging, rom manager free from the android market, universal androot which i will post the link below, and finally a custom rom from xda developers. pick anyone you like preferably cyanogen mod.
step 1. take the custom rom you downloaded from either your pc or from your phone: pc-> if you downloaded it off your pc, then you need to connect your phone to your pc and put the custom rom file on the root of your sd. you dont have to rename it, just leave as is. phone-> if you downloaded it off your phone, then i hope you heard of astro file manager from the market?! you need that to explore your sd card from your phone and find the custom rom on your downloads folder, and edit, move, to the root of your sd card. then paste.
step 2. now you need to get the universal androot apk from the link below. once you download it, make sure you put it anywhere on your phones sd card. once it's there, use astro once more to find that apk on your sd card and install it by clicking on it.
step 3 now all you need is rom manager free from the android market. i hope that you know how to find and install it.
now that you are all situated, the real part begins, and i will also explain why we are doing it this way along the process okay.
step 4 open up the universal androot apk on your phone and it should look pretty simple. the only thing you do here is make sure that root temporary(unroot after reboot) is checked. then hit root . you should get a sucess and the superuser apk showing up in your app drawer. if yes then proceed to step 5.
step 5 now that you have temporary root, this will give you permission to use root apks until reboot. luckily i found out that rom manager has the ability to flash clockwork recovery while your phone is still on. well this is what your going to do. open up rom manager, and the very top option is "flash Clockwork Recovery" hit this and it should install it. after that click on "install rom from sd card." find your custom rom that you put on here from before, and click on it, then check both boxes: backup existing rom, and wipe data and cache, and hit ok. now hit ok to go into recovery. if you get a superuser request at this point then congratulations, its working. allow it , and proceed to step 6 .
step 6 now your phone is restarting and should back up the system and start installing the custom rom. if for some reason it doesnt install right there, and takes you to clockwork recovery(blue words), then go to step 7. if not then step 8
step 7 if you are in clockwork recovery and dont know what the heck youre at, well in short, your at a screen where your allowed to install any rom meant for the mytouch slide including the 2.2 froyo. yay! navigation is simple if you know how. volume buttons are for navigation up and down, and the camera button on the right bottom is for selecting, while the power button at the top of the phone is to go back one. got it ? all you want to do is intall your custom rom if you havent yet. you might first want to do the wipe data/ factory reset, to make sure everything goes smoothly on your new rom. after that go back to the screen with all the options, and go to install zip for sdcard. then it is important to choose zip from sdcard, as i have no idea what the apply sdcard:update.zip will do to your phone. after you click choose update, you should be in a familiar area: your sdcard. find your custom rom and install it. it will work if its a complete and compatible rom for your phone. once done hit reboot system now and presto step 8.
step 8 ur done lol. enjoy your new rom. misc. if you ever want to go back into clockwork recovery, then go into your normal recovery by power + volume down while your phone is turned off. then hit recovery option. youll notice that you are at the normal recovery. push power+volume up for new set of options. theres an option call apply zip update. click on the and boom, you should pop up in clockwork recovery.
universal androot since i am a new user, i cannot post links but here is an attachment, and if your not signed in then you will find the program by going to 4shared.com and searching for UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta.apk uploaded by chrisjcj27. thanks and good luck

Followed your steps completely. After i get root and flash CW Recovery, I go to install the custom rom and make a Nandroid backup.........it restarts phone and take me to the phone with a question mark (i think thats what it was) and then reboots normally into the stock rom. It says its failing to installl the update package which im assuming is CW Recovery.

try repeating the steps again. and make sure that everything goes right along the way. the slightest error will make this a no go.
ill go back and re check everything. this worked for me 3 times over. gimme a sec. ill make this work. sorry for the inconvenience oh by the way. can anyone confirm that they have tried this on a mytouch that hasnt recieved the new ota update. this is the only phone i have tested it on. im not sure if it has anything to do with it.
Tried it about 6 times now. Even downloaded terminal to ensure i have root before carrying on. Its not letting the update.zip that Rom Manager installs on the SD card run at all. Its saying its not signed and then it fails?
Androot is only able to give us a temporary root, therefore the bootloader is still locked and it will not allow us to actually get into CW at all. Correct?

Read through the working root method here.
This method was developed by ChiefzReloaded, a dev we all know and love. He knows his stuff.
The one posted in this thread seems easier, but simply will not work.

Got update message from Tmobile, should I...

go ahead and do the update, or not?. My phone is unrooted, lagfix installed, GPS runs good and so is AP mobile. Everything works flawlessly. I heard/read and saw lots of people have problem with the OTA update. Do i miss anything if i don't do this update? I am thinking of waiting until the Froyo release. I know to do the update, I should remove lagfix, ext 2. My main concern is the availability of AP Mobile after update? Any advices. Thanks.
You may run into issues if you install it with the MobileAP mod.
There's a new version of MobileAP that supports JI6 just fine - you'll just have to reapply that new version from the MobileAP thread after the update. Be sure you undo the lag fix first or you'll be in a world of hurt.
The OTA may fail on your phone even so, but it's easy to flash the JI6 update via ODIN and get everything working again.
Thanks for the replies. The only thing I don't know how to flash using odin.

OK. I removed OCLF and EXT2, then go ahead and do the update. However, during the update process, the % bar 0-100%, near the end when it reached 100%, I got a prompt "update failed, your fone will reboot". Now, looks like I am stuck at the boot screen (Vibrant and SAMSUNG screen). What should i do now?
One thing though, I was able to put the phone in the Download mode (volume up/down, pwr button). But when i select re-install packages, i got message "no update.zip file on sdcard". Is it ok if i put "update.zip" file on the SD card (root) and reinstall? Will this restore the phone? Thanks.
I ran into the same thingwhen I tried to install the ota update...ended up having to reflash...i just don't think its worth it to update....if it isn't broke don't fix it...lol

Edit: I didn't go to page 2.. thanks JD for answering the same question before me
I just got the OTA update and I was rooted and OCLF lag fixed with clockwork installed and wireless tether installed.
After the update I was still rooted, lag fix still worked (quadrant about 2300~ or so) and wireless tether just worked.
To be honest I don't like the update becase of crap running in the background and the new task killer administers vacuum to genital organs of decayed donkeys...but it all went smooth.
I'm even tethered to the phone now

[q] heeeeeellllllp meeee pleaaase

I, an ignorant vibrant user eager to break into the world of ROMS, finally and successfully rooted my phone with the one click root.
One Click Lagfix from the marketplace immediately thereafter. Phone was blazing fast.
I decided to push my stupid limits. I tried to download and install Eugene's Vibrant Hybrid final ROM that would give me glorious, stock android. I followed the instructions I found for "installing a ROM":
Copy the zip to the root.
Boot into recovery.
Go into clockwork recovery.
factory reset.
install zip from sd card.
after that's done, reboot.
I got a little chimy, should-be-startup noise, (not the standard vibrant start-up noise, but what I expect would be the new ROM start-up noise I downloaded) and then nothing. Just the Vibrant screen.
I can boot into recovery mode, but I don't know what to do next. I tried to find the backup I made on Clockwork, but it was NOT THERE. I am now panicking and trying not to do anything stupid to my phone.
read on Eugene's site that it could be that I don't have the correct kernel flashed to support the ROM...? At this point, I kind of just want my phone back while having to lose the least amount of data. Please Help.
and before I tried installing the ROM, I used the one-click lag fix from the market on my already rooted phone.
Thanks!
james
Did you disable the lag fix before flashing?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
no, didn't realize that it would be an issue until after flashing the ROM. I think I'm stuck in a boot loop... and I have access to a mac only at the moment. Tomorrow I'll have access to a PC if ODIN could help at all...
Search for "froyo that doesnt brick your phone" flash if with odin and after that flash back to stock.

Will this restore my data and settings...?? What will I lose?
In a weird. Everything. Unless you made an external backup. Eugene's will wipe the phone.

its just a simple user error. Honestly imo opinion, if you are using the lagfix option found on the market, flashing to other roms reformats /data and /system and such undoing it. So thats not where your issue came from the flashing. Before the flash, if you were on stock jdf, the flashing the hybrid final rom didnt update your baseband/modem.bin and i am pretty sure that would put you in your situation. Possible situation number 2. You had the ota update on your phone already. Meaning you were running ji6 then the rom update.zip may have been corrupted or incomplete.
to fix either one of these situations is simple. As long as the answer to my next question is a hell no. Did you flash jacs xmod voodoo kernel after you flash the hybrid rom?? The faster you reply to this the faster i can get to to a solution. You will also need a computer that has adb installed and properly recognizing your phone.
IF YOU DID FLASH THE VOODOO LAGFIX YOU WILL NEED ACCESS TO A COMPUTER WITH ODIN AND ANDROID SDK!! WETHER IT BE A MAC WITH PARRELLS OR A VM OR LINIX OR WINDOWS.

That is not true. Anything on his internal memory will be perfectly intact. And if he can still get into cwm recovery, he adb push a few files to the root of his sd card and boot right up depending the cause

I didn't flash **** after that. Just the Hybrid mod, then I was stuck. The steps I mentioned in my process were the only things that ever ever happened.
also, yes, I (was) running JI6 as well. Until this fiasco.
Eugene's thread for the hybrid mod also has files posted for, quote, "reboots and freezes" with the file name JFDkernanmodemji2.zip. All things that have been mentioned positively at one point or another in this thread. Since I am pretty sure I don't have the appropriate kernel to run the ROM, do I simply push the JFDkernanmodemji2.zip file to my root, flash it, then flash the ROM again and life will be good?

boot your phone into clockwork recovery and plug in to computer. Then open a command prompt window. you can type in cmd into search bar in windows to open it up. Then type adb devices into the little black window. tell me what happens when you do this. Do you have gtalk or aim? This will go by faster If you have one

[Q] Rooting Vibrant with Froyo

Hi
I looked around and saw a few ppl having trouble while rooting vibrant.
I've put update.zip on /sdcard, and when i reboot my phone in recovery mode it says something about my package not being signed.
So i googled and did this:
java -classpath "/home/ohai/Downloads/android-sdk-linux_86/tools/sign/testsign.jar" testsign update.zip file-signed.zip
(don't worry, i'm not that stupid, i DO have the sdk and the testsign installed here)
then renamed file-signed.zip to update.zip and replaced it on /sdcard, but still got the same message.
Does anyone have a link to a actually working update.zip to vibrant's froyo?
i'm using froyo.UVJL4, downloaded from samfirmware.com.
Thx in advance
?

Everyone's update.zip is usually different is what i'd think.
try getting titanium backup, click menu and click menu, and then CREATE update.zip
that might help you out.
Go to dec section and look for the jl4 rom from geodude(cant remember exact name...) His rom, odex or deodex both come prerooted with the 3e recovery fix as well. Flash that. KTB.

If you are comfortable using the voodoo lagfix you can flash the new voodoo 5 kernels. They come with the SU binary and clockworkmod recovery built in. Then download busybox and superuser from the market. You'd have to flash via ODIN though.
Thx for the tips, but i was not thinking about using modified roms... all i want is to root my default rom from samsung, is it possible?
You need the correct key to sign the zip file. My understanding is this key was not released by Samsung so you will not be able to sign your update.zip files to work with the 3e recovery.
The 2e recovery accepted a "test key" which is why we're able to use update.zip to root and use CWM.
The RATC method still works for rooting in the 2.2 Firmware. You can use SuperOneClick to root, and then replace the stock 3e recovery with the one from here. This is a modified 3e recovery which removes the signature checking.
How about trying the ALT METHOD in the Noob Guide (my signature)... then flash a stock rom with root?

personally, you are hurting yourself by not running a rom like Nero v3 or Eugenes Ginger Clones.
Rooting T-Mobile Vibrant Froyo 2.2 JL5
I have the T-mobile Vibrant US Phone. I upgraded to JL5 and have rooted my phone with a program from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Get the latest version and you might have to run the program 2 or 3 times for it to finish. Note on my phone these were the steps I took.
1. Put phone in USB Debugging Mode.
2. Plug usb cable to computer.
3. Run the rooting program above with windows administrator rights.
4. It will run then probably hang half way through and indicate WAITING FOR
DEVICE.
5. Shut windows program down.
6. Reboot phone (Turn Off then On).
7. Reconnect to usb.
8. Restart the Rooting Program and Root.
9. It should finish and ask if you want to test SU say yes.
10. That's It you should be good to go.
Hope this helps.

You still can't get rooted & you want FroYo?
I attached cwm update.zip so just use that to get into CWM Recovery (Reinstall Packages, You may need to do it twice) and then just flash the following ROM

Sorry for being this dumb, but i don't have a clue of what is CWM
me too,
im desperately looking to root my vibrant from Bell canada. i just updated to JL2 using the kies pc software. i just got this phone for xmas so im quite new to it.
im hoping to find an app or website that can do most of the steps for me. or a youtube video with detailed step by step.
ive tried using the guide that s15274n wrote (btw, thanks for the awesome writeup) but i have the same problem of the update.zip file not passign the signature verifaction.
i would like to stay with a stock ROM for at least another couple weeks because of the super high chance of this phone bricking itself
my phone has a build date of 11.10
any thoughts?
thank you VERY much for any help
EDIT:
I have managed to root my phone! hurray!
heres how i did it:
i used the superoneclick method thanks to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
i used this guide to help me through the steps http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/11/how-to-root-your-android-phone-superoneclick-method/

Start with the stickies. For roms its all opinion. Most popular seem to be bionix and trigger. I prefer trigger.

Well I would say that you should go back to 2.1 through Odin. And to do that, install Odin v1.7 or whatever, and stock jfd along with the 512 pit(I can post the links later, but until then, Google is your friend). Open up ODIN FIRST.. take out the battery, and hold down the volume rockers. Without letting go, plug into the computer and then put the battery back in. When you see the yellow android digging you are in download mode. Now you should see COM(number) on the top right of ODIN on the computer .
Now choose the PDA (t959xxxjfd.tar) and pit file(512.pit), and hit start. Should take about 2-3 minutes to go back to eclair
After you are booted up, download Z4 root (again, find it on google) and root your phone. It will reboot again, after 2nd boot, download rom manager. Open this app and install clockwork mod recovery for Samsung vibrant. It will ask you for root access after you choose boot into recovery, select "allow". It will boot into regular recovery. And you will use the down volume key to select reinstall packages. This will officially install clockwork mod recovery. You may have to do this twice. The way you know is the recovery menu will be green, and have about 10 options. As opposed to the yellow and blue menu with 4 options.
After this, you are golden. You are rooted and have CWM to install whatever rom you choose. I would recommend bionix v1.3. It is an easy install.

I couldn't find out how to root 2.2 so I just converted. Repeating this process has made it quite easy to do this kind of stuff.
Its good practice! But check and make sure the 512 pit is compatible with the jfd, because I forgot.
But yes I woudl recommend this if you plan to go to any other rom. But if you just want rooted 2.2 then don't do this
