Flashing LG official firmware from ubuntu - Optimus One, P500, V General

Is it possible to flash the official ROM from ubuntu or any Linux based machines?

Yes, if there was a port of KDZ Updater.
You can run it with WINE though, or through VirtualBox, but I completely suggest that YOU DONT. I don't want to be held liable for bricked devices because of this
Side notes: I'm completely paranoid about bricking my phone, and I never will try KDZ on neither Win or Linux. Not in any day

You can flash it if you have a nand backup... if you dont need the original bootloader.

running ubuntudroid atm. I lost the fear of bricking my phone once I learned a few tricks here.

Heck, I can't even get my OptT to talk to an *buntu box with adb, much less do anything more complex. I was able to to get udev set up for the G1 so it's not like I'm utterly clueless.

OS X + Heimdall + Fascinate still not working?

I read a post somewhere that as of the Froyo update the secondary bootloader error that prevented Heimdall from recognizing the Fascinate on OS X has been fixed. Only, I really need it to work right now, but Heimdall says it can't find a device.
Has this been fixed, or was that post incorrect? I don't have access to a PC, and have borked my phone, so Heimdall is my only option.
Thanks in advance.
Install Linux or Windows via boot camp. That's what I did.

Question about that: I've always skipped over Boot Camp stuff because I never wanted Windows, but is that a separate installation? Is it on the OS X disc? And would I need to repartition my hard drive?
Thanks

Well, I have a mac and a fascinate. I am not able to use heimdall or odin with my fascinate even with windows installed via parallels desktop. Turns out the problem is with the fascinate. It has a faulty secondary bootloader and will not work with osx in download mode. I have read others say (like the guy who commented first) that they were able to get it to work, but not me. It's a problem with the fascinate
To use Bootcamp, you will have to repartition your drive. You start up the utility, let it repartition, and then install your copy of Windows. That's the only drawback... You have to by Windows. But it does work. I have my wife's MBP bootcamped, and that's how I use Odin for anything I need it for

Ick, I'm running a Hackintosh, and while I've read of others who have multi-boot systems it seems like a pain, and I rather like mine just the way it is. Other than for flashing, I have no good reason to have Windows or Linux when OS X does everything else I need. I'm sure the secondary bootloader problem will be fixed eventually, by Samsung, VZW, or someone here.
Fortunately I did manage to dig up my wife's old college laptop (6-year-old Dell), and while slow, it worked. Just means I can't flash too much. Of course, now that I flashed CWM I can flash ROMs from recovery, so problem solved I guess.
I may give Boot Camp a try on my next Mac/Hackintosh. Thanks for the input!
Yeah, I agree... It can definitely be a pain if you've already got your system up and running the way you like. Fortunately for me, Bootcamping Windows was one of the first things we did on my wife's MBP since she needed it for some software. Worked out for me
boot camp is awesome....period...the ability to run anything at anytime on one laptop is invaluable...i even have parallels as well with win7 installed, and google chrome btw...just when i need something quick, but having boot camp, if i have to odin something while commuting is a blessing, i mess with my phone hourly, so at anytime, i could brick it and have to flash a stock rom through odin, like i said...invaluable

You don't need bootcamp to do this...multiboot setups are possible too. Though I must admit its a nice feature and easy to use.
I dual boot archlinux and hackintosh on my pc and must admit that its a bit of a pain to get working but I was able to do it with grub bootloader

Unbricking an OV, by way of OS?

I've been thinking about the OV's that get bricked by way of factory reset after rooting and roming with the wrong recovery. When the phone can only be recognized in emergency mode by the PC, it's a brick. As I've been given to understand, at that point the only thing that can be done for it is to stuff some Optimus S firmware down it's gullet. What separates the firmware for the two? Is there any way to strip out the radio from the flash? (That's what nerfs it, right?) If so, I was thinking we could use a ROM meant for the S, hacked to remove whatever elements would nerf a V's radio, just to get up and running enough to push the correct recovery. If that were possible, it would save a few good phones.
So, am I just being naive? Or would this be possible?
So I guess not.

[Q] 10.1 update through kies

Illu ppl.
Was wondering if I could update through Kies even tho I have rooted my device (galaxy 10.1 tab /w 3g). Done nothing else with it.
Seen the s2 phones have gotten the ICS now and I havent on the tabb yet. Even tho it was announced.
So do the root have something to do with it?
LOL Root has nothing to do with it.
It's all regional based, that is if you still rely on ****ty Kies.
Another similar question: Can I update through kies or OTA if I am on custom rom, i.e. overcome? Do I have to edit the build.prop, or have a stock recovery?

Just tried kies for the first time. Got it to work or rather see my tab after some hours fighting with it, instaling sdk and get the extras instaled.
Did read about a person who had some problems updating on the s2 that was rooted. so I figured, why not ask. atleast then I would be 100% certain
I thought it would not have anything to do with it
ty for the reply.
Ah no worries Forgive the sarcasm but I've seen this question floating around way too much Then again, rooting just enables access to system files, it does nothing to affect OTA updates, HOWEVER some OTA updates would reset the phone to lose SU rights, so you may need to root again.
It's like a nail on the wall, you can get a new nail, but you still have to hammer it in.
@Pandos, No. It won't work as Custom ROM's are based on a firmware build but the kernel differs from the ones that come with the stock.

No worries about the sarcasm figured you might be kinda tired of the question. I know what rooting do. Used it alot on my old htc to change roms, screw aroundwith coding in the terminal and sutch.
Then I'll just wait for the ics and test it before going withroms or dualboot with linux. Or try and fiugre out if I can have linux on asdcard and get it to boot from that when mounted.would be awsome
You can run linux via terminal app Dont need to double boot, Linux can be installed but only Gnome and ubuntu so far using VNC Viewer

OSX-Heimdall users here?

I just hot my S3 today and I am struggling with all the new information I have to study here . I was an HTC user all this years so terms like Odin are pretty new to me. Beyond that I have a mac . Very bad combination with Samsung mobile phones. Not even android file transfer is working at the moment. I tried first to accomplish all the rooting and recovery procedure with virtual machine of Windows 7 but the phone is not available to the guest, when it is in download mode. So I thought I will give Heimdall a try eventhouh Odin seems a far better solution. I don't know which programm is better but Heimdall has very bad documentation. So back the subject. I saw numerous complaints about Heimdall 1.3.2 so I decided to start with 1.3.1. My first question is about the pit file. It is not clear to me if I have to extract it from my device and if yes, how can I do this? Does anyone here has experience with this particular software ,to use it under OSX as a daily driver?

Yes and partially negative:
I have flashed the CWM and all went fine.
I have then tried to flash a new stock rom, all went fine and no errors in the program, but then the phone was not working:
it was saying no SIM card installed and was lagged in every operation.
I had to find a Windows PC and reflash with Odin to have my GS3 work again, i suppose Heimdall soft-bricked it, at least the modem part.
To be honest i created myself a Heimdall package with the files of the unpacked stock rom and my own phone downloaded PIT.
But even if i'm pretty sure i did all in the right way, the flashing result was a dead phone.
So, use it with caution ...

Unlimited.io no longer supports the Windows version.
I wonder however if any info here will help you:

A reminder to be very careful. I make no warranties express or implied, but will admit total success after completing all the pre-requisites and then following the proper procedure through linux. Granted, my timing was off, and it took a great many more than several tries, however on the plus side, I get points for perseverence, and it was truly exciting thinking I could have destroyed my phone at any moment, and somehow, did not. FWIW, I used an older than recommended version of linux (don't remember which) than that specified, but can't recommend anyone else do that.
Good luck.

Good point, shubham211995.
There is a clear notice in the pre-requsites on the unlimited.io website to use Ubuntu 12.04 and newer 32-bit, and that even if one has Windows installed, one can use the LiveCD:
"1. Supported Operating Systems:
We only support Ubuntu 12.04 (and newer) 32bit, you may use a LiveCD if you have the wrong OS installed natively. LiveUSB will NOT work!
Ubuntu 64bit, Ubuntu versions lower than 12.04, other Linux distros, Virtual Machines and Mac's will NOT work - we will not help you if you break your device!"
live cd
you can download a live cd and run it on vm ware if do not want linux on your computer.
If you're still stuck @ravike14 can help you out!
