I haven't tried flashing any of the new ROMs because I like the BN Reader app that comes on the Nook. I've been looking at the various threads and haven't seen anything mentioned about it. Let's say I flash HC, will I be able to read my magazines?
Sent from my Nootered NookColor using the XDA app.
Yes... and no.
I used this process to root and add HC:
At the B&N forum on Android Central in the stickies section: 54069-guide-how-root-your-nook-color.html
When I completed this process, I had full use of the B&N app.
But I also used the CWM method (ClockworkMod/Rom Manager) and that eliminated the stock B&N apps for me, although you could, presumably, D/L some functionality via the market with the Nook App.
Now, I have the full functionality with the "Home" Launcher that was on the NC when I completed my root in the first method, but that goes away to some extent if you add, say, ADW Launcher IF YOU SELECT THAT LAUNCHER WHILE USING THE INVERTED U BUTTON; THE BUTTON THAT ALLOWS YOU TO PICK WHICH LAUNCHER YOU WANT TO USE.
So now, when I hit the "Home" function, I pick between the launchers from the pop up window that wants me to choose.
When I want all B&N functionality, I just pick the "Home" Launcher, which has full B&N functionality. When I want to do more non-B&N stuff, I use ADW Launcher. I picked ADW Launcher because their non-pay version allows you to change the icon size, while Launcher Pro makes you get the paid version to do that.
Hope this helps...

No, you cannot use the stock B&N app on any of the Froyo ROMs, HoneyComb ROMs or the upcoming CM7. These ROMs basically wipe the B&N software.
The stock B&N app is only available on rooted 1.01 or 1.1 (Eclair).
For the newer ROMS you would have to download the B&N app from the market.
I am on phiremod (froyo) and the nook app from the market works for the books I had previously bought. I just had to re-download them (but not repay of course)

Looks like I'm sticking with Nootered 1.1 until/unless BN decides to switch to Froyo or HC then.

That would be your best bet because i know the books work but the mag and kids read to me books don't.

if stock is that important to you just use the dual boot option to load another rom in a new partition. all of this is posted in the development forum
Agreed - the way to go is Nookie Froyo 0.6.7 on SD card - I used a 4GB SabDisk that I picked up for like $12.99 at Office Depot. When I want to run the NC as an Andoid tablet, I pop in the card and it works just fine.
When I pop out the SD card and re-boot, back to stock NC, no footprints at all of the Froyo - and I have my magazines and the wonderful reader on the stock Nook Color.

What steps did you take to get the other card like that? I just picked up the same card, for this very reason... but unsure how to go about doing this.
Thanks for the help
I'm in the same boat as I subscribe to some magazines on the Nook.. I've tried to pull the stock reader out and get it installed in the HC preview running from sdcard, but hit a bunch of snags with missing lib files. Since there are others wanting this too I'll take another snag at getting all the libraries needed.

dependencies getting me..
So far I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on this but I've pulled the apk and have started going through the dependencies that are causing it to fail to run. I'm hoping to get some time this week to work more on it. I really want to have it working (if it's possible) before the Honeycomb V5 build makes it out as I'd like to ditch the dual booting and simply use HC for it all.
On a good note I found a thread here on XDA with an APK reverse engineering tool, so hopefully this will help speed it along.

I have made some progress fixing the dependencies: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976270
Just an FYI, using ApkManager and decompiling/recompiling the Reader.apk won't work automatically. I had to fix some layout xml files.
After going through the APK I think I may need to start a thread in the dev section as it appears there are many more hooks than simply pulling the libs over with the apk.

How to load book previouly bought on nook stock reader to the market version of nook for android. It does not seem to regonize them. Haven't been able to find process of how to do this yet. It says it supports it, but no directions on how to. I tried loading barnes and noble purchased ebook on another reader and it was asking for username password. Which for some reason can not remember.
So how do I load epubs that I purchased from barnes and noble on orignal stock nook color. I believe some are children eread books someone mention those can not be read by Nook for Android market app is that correct?

Simply put you have to log in to your B&N account on the nook app. If you don't remember your user name and password then...I guess you'd be out of luck? I mean there are ways to figure out your password and username (their website, or call them) so you could try that, but there is no way to just import them to the app without it, unless you made a backup on your computer of them prior to going away from the stock reader. Let me know if that is the case, I may be able to help you.
Also, I don't believe that the B&N format is simply ePub (I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure) and so if you were to want to use a different app (like Aldiko), you'd have to convert the file (assuming it's DRM free)
And you're correct, at this time childrens books can not be read on the android app, but they are working on it (along with magazines) from what rumors say.
If you need more help let me know.
I have found "alternate" sources for my magazines now (in PDF format) and canceled my magazine subs through B&N. I really liked the reader and some of the extra features, but I really want to move forward with CM7 (and not dual-booting).
Thanks,
what was the process for logging in and registering nook with stock app, meaning how does B&N site regonzie Nook Color Reader, when you first register to provide a email for userid. It as been a while since I had stock nook reader so I have forgotten what I used. The problem I am having is I made a back up off all my B&N epub docs but the market app does not evern regonize them and or not sure how to select or load them into the nook market app. I guess I will check to see if there is documentation on nook market app.

Care to share the alternate sources for mags ... either by posting here or by PM? Likewise I don't want to get into dual-booting or having to stop and pull-out my sdcard to switch functionality. And CM7 will be all the more appealing than it is now once they incorporate the tablet tweaks that mad-murdock (a Cyanogenmod dev and member of teamdouche) is working on.

Hey guys-
I don't think anyone has asked this one yet, and I can't find an answer in the Dev forums. I know that people had been getting the Nook app (the one from the market) to work with NookieFroyo, but has any had any success getting it to work with Honeycomb on the Nook? I tried installing it today after getting version 2 (which was posted this morning, I believe) to no avail.
I get to sign in and everything and I can even download books, and futz with the settings. But, when I go to read a book it either sits there loading forever, or just crashes outright. Has anyone had any success?

+1 same problem here.
I was about to post this same question. I believe I saw someone in the main honeycomb thread who said they got it working but I can't remember where or who it was. This is really the only thing keeping this from being a daily driver for me.
Same problem for me, but not only does the nook app just sit and spin, but 50% of the time, nook and kindle crash the device every time, and it reboots.

I'm in the same boat. I get a FC when it loads.
Using the 2a build.
It works for me just fine.
This is not antagonistic, but what advantages are there between the Nook and Kindle apps? I'm sure people have a preference, but I've never seen a need to move away from Kindle. (Supporting B&N is a good reason, I suppose.)

I have B&N nookbooks so that is why I would like to use this.
im on same bout also running nookhoney v3 get main screen get library and also download books but it hangs on opening book or get a FC. shop opens but havent tried to purchase anything yet.
For me, I use B&N and have friends that use B&N. We use the LendMe feature, which saves me some cash here and there. On the Kindle side, my wife lovers her Kindle, and I sync my Kindle app with her account, and we share books that way.
It's working!!!!
I am running v3 of deeper_blue's HC image and the Nook app works for me. Finally. And I am not sure how or why, it just started to work. I could get to my library before and I could download my book(s). But previously, I would try to open the book and it didn't seem to load, only the never ending circle.
The page loads, I can turn pages, bookmark them, close out, come back to the same page, go to the table of contents, skip to a chapter, etc.
I did change the screen to NOT auto-rotate. I was getting FCs when the screen would flip around between apps, so I shut it off. I am not sure if that helped, but that is one thing that is different now v. before.
(on the other subject: I like all the readers - B&N, kindle, and google books. They are all fine. I like the features that are offered by the NC for the B&N books the best, but they all work fine and read fine )
Great news. I also see that Honeycomb v04 was posted today and it specifically addresses problems with the nook and kindle apps. I'm really glad this is finally fixed. I read quite a bit and the lack of a nook app kept me from using HC as my daily driver.

Nook app definately works in HC v4.
But NO magainzes or newspapers in the app. Very disappointing.
Weird I MUCH prefer the app reader experience with the turning pages, etc. but the stock NC is the only thing I have seen let me access the newspapers and magazines
what about the nook color reader app
Is there any way to get the reading app that is on the internal memory to work with HC? Theat would be ideal and the NC would then be just about perfect!

Hi Peter,
Nook app on HC v4 works great for me. It syncs BN library pretty quickly as well.
I tried unmounting uSD before installing it (and several other apps giving FCs) and it worked. Now its my standard ePub reader again.
Good luck m8!
I'm happy with CM7 on the NC but the Nook Market app is a huge step backwards - it seems designed to frustrate tablet users. In addition to the tiny, unresponsive buttons, the online dictionary is useless when you don't have wifi. Strangely, the iphone Nook app is far more intuitive. This Android design manages to cancel out half the reason to own the thing. I know others have had the same complaints.
So here's the question. Has anyone been able to resurrect the stock Nook ereader software (along with its dictionary) and make it work on CM7? I don't want to go back to a simple rooted Nook or boot from an sd card. To be honest, if I didn't want working bluetooth so badly, I wouldn't have bothered jumping to CM7.
Apologies if this has come up elsewhere - it didn't appear in my search.
Any help would be appreciated.
I second this; I would love to see an actual usable android nook app.
I was just about to post the same thing here, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the NOOK app for Android sucks. It's so bad that I would consider buying all my books through either Amazon or the store that Aldiko uses, because those apps are far superior. Everything about the NOOK app is bad, especially when you try highlighting words/phrases and you can't highlight exactly what you want (it jumps around). I want to support B&N because I love the original NOOK and NOOK Color, but their app is so poorly made.
If the NOOK app doesn't satisfy people here, which app/service have you gone with as a replacement?

I actually like the Nook app WAY better than the Kindle app. The Kindle app doesn't do the page flip animation that the Nook one does and it keeps your spot by position numbers not page numbers. Sorry, I would rather see I was on page 22 than position 715.
I do like the native Nook software better than the app though.
There was talk on this before froyo was supported on the NC. It's basically been dropped.
Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976270
EDIT: Accidental thank to the OP...oh well.
What is everyone's thoughts about Google Books? I think it's pretty cool that it syncs your last read page in their "cloud," so it'll be at that spot either on your NC, your phone, or their website. The Android app itself has gotten bad reviews, but I kind of like it. Haven't purchased any books through it yet, but it looks promising.
Still not a big fan of the NOOK app.
The built in Nook Reader is the only reason I still run 1.2 rooted... now I have to find something for my Evo 3D.
I am okay with the app if I could just get the magazines to work. I can see the books, but I primarily like to view the magazines. Is anyone else having this issue? If I could get this fixed I would just stay running the CM7 off the sd card to not void my warranty. If not I might just install on EMMC.

Which file type is it?
Is this a magazine bought from B&N? I'm subscribed to both Asimov's and Analog and they work great.
BTW, using an overclock kernel really helps the Nook app speed.
I finally blew away stock and installed to emmc after a few days running OC, makes things tolerable, but I really wish it would resume what I was reading when I open it.
It says it on most of the magazines, like Men's Fitness and GQ. I can run them off the stock but not off the app. I finally installed CM7 on the emmc and tried it then, but still not working. I tried moving it to the SD card to see if that may help, but nope.
I probably shouldn't start a separate thread for this, but I'm wondering if people have a similar question or answer for me...
I went ahead and installed the snowball mod on my NT (yes I realize it gets rid of all B&N functionality). I went and downloaded the nook app for android off the app market, and it doesn't even run on the NT with snowball (what a surprise!). Does anyone know how to get it to run or possibly an app that functions similar to it? I really enjoyed the feel of the reader, but I still want the modified tablet so I can mess around on it when I'm not reading...
You were better off trying Indirect's mod if you wanted access to BN books. Just reimage it with Indirect's mod and you can get both worlds.

I've found that both FBReader and Aldiko are great ebook readers and are free. They work best on sideloaded ebooks and can be stored on your sd card. With Aldiko, they can be placed in any directory or folder and for FBReader, place in \sd\Books. You can also convert books on your computer using calibre (also free) prior to side loading. hope this helps....

I have been reading around. I originally had Indirect's mod installed. Snowball has the functionality I want, I just expected that maybe the nook app would still run, which it obviously isn't for me. Either that or someone might have an apk for the reader (unlikely I know but still). I don't specifically have anything purchased from B&N, so I'm not too worried about losing any books, most of the books I read are downloaded from the web. I might still go back to indirect, I'm just messing around with different things right now. I also realize that the NT is still in the early development stages for rooting/mods...
I'll look into those other ereaders and post back, thanks! on a side note, the kindle app runs fine as well. i'll have to mess around with functionality on all three but they all installed fine.
I like cool reader. You can really customize it. One feature I really like is programmable tap zones. There are nine zones with long and short tap options. It did not show menu on indirect mod. Tapping in the center calls up menu. I also loaded soft keys so I have menu when I need it. I also like Aldiko

montaro is a good reader and ol fashioned adobe reader
I like the Moon+ Reader. It has a free and a not free pro version. If you don't mind not having the latest version you can find it at APKTOP.com. You can also install a companion dictionary, e.g., colordict. Works very nice on the NT.

Hi,
I have successfully applied snowball-mod to my NT (Thank you cfoesch!). It makes the NT into a very reasonable general purpose tablet.
However, I am having one problem. I install the B&N nook android reader but it doesn't work. I have downloaded the reader from Google market and also tried side loading B&N Nook-19.apk from another device. In both cases the app installs without reported error but when I try to run it nothing starts up.
Has anyone successfully installed and used the nook android application on Snowball-mod?
Any pointers on how I might debug this?
Thanks,

I have the same issue, but I used Indirect's full debloat method. I don't care to use any of the BN stuff so last night I ran the script and performed full debloat. I downloaded nook reader and like you said installed with no issue, but would not run. I just installed a different reader and was back to reading. I do wish though that the book icon still worked though, I did like that feature. No matter I am going to install the ics toolbar today anyway. My belief is the less BN junk on my tablet the better.

Yep, this is a none problem, and there's not really much we can do about it. I think the app is detecting something about being on a Nook, and quitting out as a result. Or maybe last vestiges of Nook apps or something.
Either way, because it doesn't force quit, it's most likely that this is intentional "working-as-designed" behavior.

Wait for custom ROMs. Snowball-mod is deprecated right now. So, enjoy using your tablet with all the quirks for another month-ish, or so maybe, and then everything will be fine with the custom ROMs.
Some fella at XDA mentioned extracting the library.apk and reader.apk from the stock 1.4.0 rom and install that.
I tried that and it work perfectly. Snowball mod with original reader + library and no FC at all.
Try FBReader from the market. I like it better than BN reader. also, go use indirects update block tool. Mine updated yesterday using snowball-mod and I had to use the card method to roll back and then start over.
I have "Cool Reader" installed on a non-debloated Nook Tablet and when I press the 'book icon' it brings up the 'complete action using' menu. Once Cool Reader is set as 'default' it opens when the book icon is pressed. I'm not sure if this will work with a debloated Nook, but it may be worth a try. This feature does not work with others readers (Moon +, Aldiko, etc).
I have made a web page
http://www.makingitdigital.net/android/index.html
to share what I have installed on my NT. I have a link on there for the Nook Reader and the Nook Library. You need to install both. You will not be able to bring up the reader, but you can bring up the library and then select what you want. That brings up the reader.
Very nice putting This together. Much appreciated.
I have 3 nook tablets amongst my family that I rooted from 1.4.0 using indirect's method that have been running flawlessly since Christmas. That said, my mother's tablet today decided that it wanted to basically semi-wipe the nook OS and deleted all of the home screen icons, app history, and ebooks from the tablet. After rebooting I was able to get the apps back, but none of the BN ebooks want to re-download and the BN store doesn't even mention that any of her purchased books even exist. I was finally able to get them back on by copying the epub files from the desktop client, but they have no cover art, just list the titles as a bunch of numbers, and all of the extra features such as lending and recommendations are disabled. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to reset or regegister the BN portion of the tablet without wiping and rerooting the whole thing?
My mother mostly uses her tablet for reading ebooks and games and as such still uses the default nook OS (she insists its better, so unfortunately CM7 isn't an option). I mostly rooted to get her access to amazon content for the occasional app and the kindle book store, but I'm pretty sure it's not the root at fault for this glitch. I've seen several threads about similar problems on the official forums, but nobody there has a solution (or a clue it seems) so I figured I'd ask here.
There is one way, prepare an sdcard with CWM, download any of the stock roms with root and B&N content in development section and copy the file to your sdcard, boot into CWM , format system and only system from Mount&Storage then install the ROM you downloaded following the instructions of the respective thread.

Hmmm, that sounds like it might just work. I'll have to propose the idea to her and see what she thinks. I offered to back everything up and do a full wipe and reroot earlier but she refused and said she would live with it as she didn't want to risk losing her game saves... Wish she didn't prefer the BN home screen over the others as I've had nothing but problems with it. I've tried to get her to use a third party launcher, but she hated them all because she couldn't put books straight on the home screen.
Are there any apps or home screens out there that would allow this (books on home screen)? Also, does anyone know if the BN reader on the android store has an identical layout to the stock tablet version? Maybe I can convert her if I can come up with something similar to the BN launcher.

B&N Market app is nothing compared to original, apart that if you change to CM7 or other it's totally different interface if she likes B&N as is then is because she likes the interface too and all the B&N apps can't be run from other OS because they are dependent of the stock framework. If you get CWM up and running you could easily backup her data and do what i told you. It will safe you time and headaches.
Take a look here - METHOD#1 and here
When you restore your system you could install the app to install CWM internal, which is always good to have.
