[Q] rom developers sought for xperia - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The xperia 10 mini is a neat little device but the rom developed by S/E sucks, which is not unexpected: my target users basically hate the design of mobiles with the emphasis on apps, games, wireless ("expensive") broadband, social media etc. I get the "I just want a phone" litany all the time. So I''m sketching up screen mock ups to slim the *entire* ui down to fundamentals - telephony, sms, contacts, notifications, etc. and fairly unadorned access to the other hardware goodies: gps, camera, whatever else it has. High contrast high legibility for the smaller screen and big thumbs, older eyes, sunlight, polarizing shades, movement, distance viewing. All just common sense stuff of NO INTEREST to mass markets. But it is great that Android at last throws up the possibility of getting exactly the phone you want, and no more.
Anyway, design is one thing, partially-rewriting and recompiling a rom another ... does anyone know of rom developers that would take on a ui-spec project? THis is not just about commenting functionality out or skinning; the whole look and feel changes. I saw cyanogen's reading list elsewhere and wilted. It'd take me a year, someone brighter could do it in a month (guessing...hoping...or is this stuff all so new I should just make it my hobby and tinker away for a year??).
Sorry if this request for info is in the wrong place. Cheers.

Yep, it is a wrong place. In future, don't make any mistake

Contacts Picture Quality

Right then, who else has noticed this? I'm presuming its an issue with the sync?
My contacts are stored with Googlemail and are set to sync, which is good as it saves me manually doing it and I usually change business contacts details so its nice that it updates on its own.
I link the contacts to facebook, pictures come over, look perfect (well, alright).
Later on, the pictures look awful and I'm presuming its because they are sent to Google and then sent back to the phone in a lower quality.
There were similar issues with the Touch HD syncing with Outlook and nobody found a way around it, anyone got any suggestions?
Nobody else noticing that their contacts pictures are really poor quality? Is it just me having this issue?

Me too...
No you are not alone.
Not alone
You are not alone, I presume that there is some kind of loss in the sync to make it work faster, I havnt seen any setting to make it lossless.
When I saved a picture from facebook and added it manually the was no loss in quality.
So until there is some kind of app out I guess you will just have to manually add the pictures if you cant live with the quality.
I sync with Outlook and its the same.
I do remember when i had a HTC Touch Diamond that was the same. The way you cured the problem was to take a photo with your phone to use as a contact picture and then it was full quality. To be honest not tried it with the Hero yet maybe a task for today for me..
Same problem here.
Hope they solve it in a future update.
Its the same with me, on my Diamond I created small high quality pics for my contacts & even with these the quality is crap.
On a side note is anybody else thinking that XDA Developers isn't the place for us & our hero handsets? I'm feeling a little bit unloved

People are only just getting their Hero's so this will get going soon. Its the same when any new devices come out, just takes time.
We have root already, TP2 doesn't have HardSPL yet and thats been out months.

haha, ok...
Root gives you access to all of your phone and should allow you to flash new roms onto your phone.
HardSPL is used on phones and if you have hardspl, again, you can flash new roms.
TP2 is the Touch Pro 2, just another phone.
Basically I was trying to say the phone is new out, and usually when they are it takes a while for people to come over to them, but they do eventually. When more and more people come on board, there will be a lot more support.

You know what I think I need to make a retaction & clarify how I feel about the XDA Developers site & the hero. Both the comments of nicelad_uk & liamhere are totally spot on & it was silly of me to expect the amount of expert knowledge on the hero that I enjoyed with my previous winmo devices.
I realise now that this could be my time to shine & put something back into this community instead of just taking like I was accustomed to before. Now obviously its been established that my knowledge is a bit lax on the software but where I can help I will & hopefully the increase traffic & hel will bring more people to this part of the forum.

Haha, trust me, if you asked my girlfriend, she would say the opposite!
I started putting back into the community with my Touch Pro 2, recreating a theme which I loved on my Diamond but wasn't available, it was a good feeling.
Now I'm making apps for Android, nothing big, just getting used to it and trying different things.
And no problem with the help, we all try to help and its good to see a mod using these devices too, other people will follow shortly, when they see the light
Contacts Image quality
I have the same bad images quality in contact also. Even when i had my Touch HD. I sync with Outlook and even set the contact photo from the phone but when a call comes in or is made to the contact its all blurry. Any ideas?

That warms my cockles, does that! I feel just the same so I'm trying to help where I can (Not totally altruistic, just its summer break and I have time on my hands)
On the point of poor quality pics in the call window, I think what is happening is that the fone is grabbing the little Thumbnail created for the contacts, not the original pic. The thumbnail then looks like Sh** in the big call window.
Not a solution but could be a reason.

This issue is usually to do with the Sync, its been a common problem with Syncing with Outlook and google from Windows Mobile Devices. I posted a comment about poor picture quality on Google's forums and one of their development team said they would look into it, that was nearly 3 months ago though.
Can't think of anyway round it! Very annoying though. Auto Sync off for me I think.
I think everyone should go to the google forums and reply to this thread...

[Q] Resizing photos in Gmail app !?!?

Ok, I came from iPhone 4 and now when I want to send a photo in my Gmail app it does not resize them, sends them in 8 mpix !!! Are they so stupid that they cannot copy that feature from iOS or I am stupid and dont know how ? Basically, when I add photo on iPhone it asks me if I want small, medium, large or original and on every mode it says how big it would be, like "Small (96 KB)". Now I have sent one photo and it has sent 2,5 Mb which is insane.
Any help for this ?
Tnx
It is not a feature of the Gmail app. If you want to resize, you'd have to do it first using a different application.
Tnx, and then people call iPhone dummy phone, yea right, so much normal things are missing on Android. Today I also realized that I cant go oflline in Facebook chat on my phone, maybe I can but as soon as I get in the Facebook app again then I am again online for good, I really think that iOS app developers are waaaay smarter and more polished than Android app developers, and also have better taste because EVERY app looks nicer when it is for iOS, is it so hard to take some nice looking font and colors so the app looks nice. Obviously it is. Only thing that is better is Handcent app.
Sounds like you bought the wrong phone.

I think so too by the sound of it, but wait - imagine not being able to change your homescreen or even worse the battery, etc, etc the list goes on!!!
I come from white iPhone 4 to white SGS II ) I am realistic, there are basic things that iPhone is missing but surely there are basic things that Android is missing, at least in 2.3.3 version, I hope ICS will be better. But that aside, the look of iOS apps are not comparable to Android. Can someone explain me if the same developers are making lets say Skype, why they cant make them IDENTICAL !? If they cannot make it identical inside, why do they change the look, colors and font and Android ALWAYS looks worse, I dont get it, it looks like only iPhone users are classy people and Android users are second class, like stupid old Symbian which became offense to intelligence how old it looked and costed like something on top.
And that Facebook app on Android cannot be in the same sentence with iOS app, the look, the functionality, the speed.
Well if that is so then you should return to an iphone. No one should really stick with something they don't like.
$1 gets you a reply
So here is forbidden to talk about Android flaws !? I thought that iPhone users are blind sheeps and now it seems that Android has some blind folowers ! If something is bad than you should be a man/woman and openly say it, not hide it and think that you have the best phone in the world., jeez. Ive told that both of those OS have flaws and that is opinion of every normal man, only idiot can tell that there is a phone that is pefect.

You have a very aggressive writing style. No-one has said you can't talk about a "flaw" (it's not by the way, it's a feature request), we just can't change it.
If you want it changed, voice your opinion to Google. Venting with flame bait here isn't going to get you a new feature added.
No, we're not forbidden to talk about Android flaws. And nobody here claims their phone is perfect.
It just seems that Android pisses you off enough that the SGS2 shouldn't be the phone for you to use on a daily basis.
I hear the resale value for the iPhone4 is still pretty good. Probably best to sell it and then get the iPhone 4S.
Sorry if it sounded aggressive but when I tell that something is stupid on my phone most of the answers are go back on iPhone, I didnt tell that iPhone is better overall but I know what I miss from it and I dont like it because I cant have that now, there iz no Cydia which could make those tweaks.
I have waited for iPhone 5 and when I saw this s**t called 4S I immediately went for SGS II even tough Ive had BAD experience with SGS I, this one is not comparable with the first model.
Cheers

Looking for "Natural Display Calculator" on Android 2.3.7 CM

Hey app devs out there,
I just looked for a simple but powerfull calculator via the android market. Found nothing but the "old school" ones.
Yeah, there are tons of calculators out there, one has more abilities than the other. But thats not what I am looking for!
I am WORKING with my windows7 laptop, word2010 and microsoft's math4. Give it a try and you will see why I love this combination that damn much!
I am studying machanical engineering, so I need some features more than others, but the biggest thing is it must be as written on paper, that is what word2010+math4 gives me!
I write the fractions just as I would write them on paper, right after x^4/y^2 and space it is shown to me not in that freaky oldschool style, like excel still does.
So, why not have such an calculator on android? That would give many high mathematic working people a chance to get rid of windows, get an tablet (for me still an GalaxyAce) with android and a powerfull but easy to handle calculator.
As I have no clue about programming, it would take me months just to get the first lines, but this job realy needs enthusiasts to get it the way I mind it.
So, if any of you here knows where to place this request, please help me out. There must be sitting some super brains waiting for another challange, this would be a huge one!

I also came across the same need. It is pretty strange that on google play there is no such scientific calculator app available. I mean, the "natural display" feature would really be usefull, particulary on big screen devices. Anyone knows if such an app has been developer since DaBigFreak opened this thread?

Hahahaha I definitely didn't expect to get a response from a 3 year old thread That's great to hear. You guys were actually part of the reason why we decided to develop this app - I ran into the same problem and was amazed at how there were zero natural display scientific calculators on the store, while the Apple Store had tons. We're continually updating the app at the moment and just added programmable constants! If you could leave a review that would mean a lot to me :fingers-crossed:

Before that, I'd love to see integrals, sum and matrizes. Then you can essentially do anything you want or that could be done.
Next big thing would be to make variables calculating available. Not storing a certain number as A, B, or C, but let the calculator solve an non-number equation to a specific variable.
Right behind that, setting up variables with a value, so you can define A:=5.0, B:=2*A and the equation only has A and B, the calculator gives the results.

All the things you've asked for are being worked on at the moment, but understandably it will be months before they're actually implemented. At the moment we really need traction to increase the visibility of our app, otherwise there's really no incentive for us to continue developing if it's going to be buried underneath thousands of crappy calculator apps on the Play Store That's why reviews and ratings are so important to us. We do take into account the many features that our users request, they'll all sitting in a document, slowly being ticked off one by one

Why on earth did Google remove Tablet UI?

It makes no sense on a 10-inch tablet.
Frankly, the navbar should be on the side, because that's how you hold it in both portrait and landscape. But at least with the old TabletUI, it was in the corner, which is sort-of to-the-side. Phablet UI on a huge 10-inch tablet just makes no sense to me.
It works just fine for me. Heck, i even used the tablet UI when i had AOKP on it, didn't see the hype, went back to phablet. Same with pie controls.
Everyone likes everything. Any change made is always going to please one and displease another.

They did this to unify the Android experience. I think this was an important step. With KitKat, every app can hide the navbar if need be. I think this is a good compromise, at least in the long run.
(The N10 has this feature too, right?)

I hate not havind tablet UI. I find Phablet mode annoying. It is one of the biggest reasons I root and mod, then I can custom my UI the way I like. If google were run with half a brain they would understand the importance of being able to customize the user experience but they have proven their inability to manage responsibility just with their lack of announcements allowing potential customers to plan ahead, so I expect ignorance on a colossal scale when dealing with any sort of reliability or customer service issues when it comes to this giant waste of potential we call Google.

It they want to better unify the Android experience I wish they would do it by adding features to the phone (auto rotate quick setting, option to select the channel when using the volume buttons) instead of taking useful things away from the tablet!
In my opinion, the only thing potentially out of place is the nav bar buttons positions. Being in the centre makes it a bit hard to reach if you are holding your tablet with both hands. Which is why I have the ability to reposition the buttons in my custom ROM... other than that, I love the unified UI... I always hated the old tablet UI...
When i had Xoom on 4.1.2 I couldn't wait to get the phablet mode that was introduced in 4.2. When I got it in my hands I really liked it, specially the two notification bars (one for notifications and one for settings). Then I got Nexus 10 and never willed to have the tablet UI back, as I really enjoyed this one. However the only thing that I really disliked in KitKat update was the settings app! I think it's important to unify android now, as we're talking about many devices worldwide, but leave tablet stuff for tablets and phone stuff for phones!
If you don't like the UI you can flash a custom ROM and bring it back I believe.
sad news for many...
A lot of people on a Google+ Paranoid Android thread upset about this.

I can't agree with much of this. If it was as you say then you would not be able to ever modify anything. The reason you were able to root and do your modifications is because Google does listen and releases source code for android. They could keep it closed. Then people could kiss their Roms goodbye. People that modify, root, and change their phones are still in the minority. Sure if you come here it will seem like everyone does, but in truth we are a small minority. My son is the only person besides myself that I personally know that roots. So what Google is trying to do is create a uniform look and experience. They are trying to get developers to follow the model. Android is still basically new, but has come a long way. If they get enough requests they may bring the feature back. But if not, I am sure it will continue to evolve.

It's hard to disagree with conan1600's suggestion that some type of changelog prior to upgrades would be extremely helpful.

Simply by taking options away invalidated your beliefs. That I can modify my tablet is not an issue regardles of google. All locked bootloader tablets are eventually broken. But Google makes you do it this way. Add features and make defaults but NEVER take features people like. Also it wouldn't be hard for google to easily say, hey guys we are going to refresh this or that device, or we are not would show common courtesy. Google or most other big brands know nothing of customer appreciation.
Apple and Microsoft frequently remove features when they upgrade. In fact I have seldom seen any Of that doesn't remove something in an upgrade. Sometimes they are added back, but more often than not it never is. There are always people that are upset when this happens but they hope that most are happy with what they have improved or added. Windows does this over and over. There are things I miss also in this version. One is tablet mode. But for me it is not a deal breaker. And yes, unlocking a device allows you to modify the device, but if the Operating System can't be modified like Google allows by providing AOSP then all your tweaks can't happen. Android is to phones like Linux is to PC. Apple and Microsoft do not allow the flexibility. I understand your frustration, we all hate losing things we use. Like I said, I am not real happy about losing tablet mode. I just do not think Google is terrible like you say. I see steady performance improvement and a desire to added useful features. Are they perfect? Hardly, but they are trying.

I also wanted to add that Google didn't decide what devices get updated. In fact Kitkat was specifically designed so more device could handle updates. It is the carrier/device manufacturer that decides that. Google sends them the updated system then it is up to them to modify source and prepare it for the device. Luckily we have some great ROM makers who are capable of doing this themselves.

openness...
The Open Source Project was a brilliant business decision which has been hugely successful in accomplishing what Google has referred to as ''our most important goal... widespread adoption of the software....'' They go on to say, ''Openness is vital to the long-term success of a platform, since openness is required to attract investment from developers.... to make sure there would always be an open platform available for carriers, OEMs, and developers to use to make their innovative ideas a reality.''
Has Android succeeded at attracting the creativity of developers? For sure. And I'm glad they have... Android is awesome that way! But let's not forget that Android's openess was born of a business decision, to attract not only developers but end-users as well.
Google: ''We also wanted to make sure there was no central point of failure, so no single industry player could restrict or control the innovations of any other.''
I'd like that to include allowing Paranoid Android to continue using Tablet UI to give us a more tablet-friendly environment... and, for that matter, CM to be free to introduce MultiWindows without facing a dictator's wrath. CM's MultiWindows would be kick-ass on the Nexus 10!

It's encouraging to see Google emphasize tablet apps more in the Play Store, but discouraging to see them de-emphasize tablets in Android itself... especially when it's a surprise. Google could be a lot more 'open' about what they've done... at the time they release Android updates.
I assume, conan1600, when you talk about Google refreshing devices, you're talking about it's own Nexus brand. I guess that's kind of obvious since this is a Nexus thread. Also, I read you as wanting to hold Google to its own standards of openness, not to the low bar set by Microsoft and Apple.
If I understand you right, it's not enough to say there are worse tyrants... we love Android precisely because it promises freedom from tyranny.

Frankly, the navbar should be on the side, because that's how you hold it in both portrait and landscape. But at least with the old TabletUI, it was in the corner, which is sort-of to-the-side. Phablet UI on a huge 10-inch tablet just makes no sense to me.

I could not agree more.
Found this while searching for tabletui options for the nexus 7.
I guess this is it with android. By moving everything to closed source and removing features like tabletui, Google is showing itself to be just as bad, if not worse than others.
With baytrail win8 tablets landing, I would say this might be a costly mistake for Google.
I love my android phone, but if Google declared war on tablets, then I will leave ... And it looks like I won't be the only one.

This goes far beyond simple decisions such as tablet UI. It is the demeanor of Google in taking Tablet UI that does show their direction of thinking though. Android was freedom, it was different than cookie cutter icrap.
Yes I am talking about nexus. It makes no sence whatsoever to refrain from at least making loyal customers aware if they should continue to wait on our chosen favorite devices. However I do not consider this high standards at all but simple common sense. By being so introverted they have driven me and several loyal nexus fans into the arms of others on both the 7 and 10 inch lines. Its not specs or trade secrets we are looking for but simply is there going to be another one or should I look elsewhere. But so many companies have become so large and powerful they dont even care about pissing a few thousand off with rudeness. And then there are the fan boys who defend bad business practices. Secrecy is one thing. Stupidity is another.
I came to android because I felt trapped by Apple and Itunes. As you can see by my sig I like android, and those are just the devices I personally used. This household has 5 times that many devices. Lately though I see Google forcing Google plus on me, i see google messing up youtube comments, I see Google making decisions about a few killobyte lines of code that could easily be defaulted rather than done away with, I see Google being closed mouthed about simple things such as if there will even be a new nexus tablet in a timely manner, and I see Google forgetting why we, the customer, made them great. the first page of a google search is almost entirely adds now. Over all I have been a Google backer, however I find myself pulling away from the monstrosity that I once saw as a bright and more transparent company than Apple or Amazon.
So yes Microsoft is becoming more appealing to me again. At least they had the decency to say, hey we took a butt kicken on surface rt but you can count on us making a surface 2. People knew they would get a refresh and could easily decide if they wanted to wait on it or buy from another company.
I most likely will stay with Android this year but Nexus has lost me simply because of the unreliability of the parent company and its inability to show courtesy. Fortunately other manufacturers of Android tablets are as yet not so crazy.
Another great invention by Matias Duarte?

Dude, we are basically coming back to gingerbread, without the tablet UI...
Everything come after ICS in terms of interface, was worst. IMHO.
They wanted the experience to be the same across all of their devices. I personally prefer the tablet UI on a ten inch screen, but whatcha gonna do? Still beats a physical home button!

There have been a lot of what people argue are missteps (these generally being wildly up in the air; even the tablet vs. unified layout debate rages on months later), but a wealth of subtler improvements that take us far and beyond Gingerbread. The comparison is juvenile at best, both at an aesthetic level (Holo has been refined significantly since Ice Cream Sandwich, and the new "Cards" style UI is starting to come into favor) and at a performance level (Project Butter and Project Svelte, among other things).

Google on the fall

What do you think? Since MM Doze never really officially worked, Nougat's "enhanced" Doze barely works.
I'm wondering what happend to Google? They release half working internal official releases. Has the Developers been there too long? Too tired to care make something great? Or is Google just hiring Developers that want to get their foot in the door with no experience?
Just something to think about as I'm seeing a fall in android which is very disappointing, I mean after 5 previews and an offical release you really cannot fix the Android System bug thats using same % as screen? Pretty embarrassing on Google if you ask me.
Been android quite awhile it was doing great but they just cant get it together anymore?
MM Doze never worked? It works exactly as they intended it to; when the phone is not moving.

Go back to Apple you Apple scum!
On a serious note though, I disagree with pretty much everything you said.
Doze is working completely fine, and so is everything else.
There is no such "fall" in Android. As far as I know, pretty much everything is rising.

There is already a general Android discussion section.
This thread reminds me of a galaxy Black Hole!
Google's not perfect but they allow indie developers freedom. Steve Jobs wanted the ipad to be an extension of the user but then he had specific ideas for how that user should behave. Apple says we know whats best for you, while Google says "go ahead and get that tatoo. We might think its a poor decision but its your body!"
Ill stop rambling here. I like freedom and SOMETIMES that means things wont always go smooth.
Back to the topic--never had issues with doze either.

google sucks they treat their user base as a bunch of alpha testers
they never fix anything , they are a bunch of cheap money grubbers who will not spend money to hire people from the first world none of their developers can even be toilet trained how do you expect them to be able to be trained to develop software?
of course the low level 3rd world developers are not even nearly as bad at the higher ups who are supposed to be managing and designing
nothing they do makes any sense they are all a bunch of severely autistic retarded sperglords with zero real world social skills or experience
besides them leaving critical things broken for months to years like FRP and google maps navigation
they just are very poor at design in general and lack any common sense
everything they do is @SS backwards AF
most basic common sense features are not even included , whenever they do do something right they decide to make change for the sake of change and break it again

so just because i am not a android fanboy i must be an IOS fanboy
uh no, i give criticism where it is due, and there is plenty due for both
IOS is more polished and they do not put out releases in an alpha state though
and both of these companies are getting suckier and suckier by the minute
removing features instead of adding more and screwing over consumers and their user bases
and the fan boys on both sides just beg for more abuse , oh yes remove my SD slot , my removable battery , my IR blaster, my headphone jack ,my front facing stereo speakers, a ton of useful software features,
just take my money you can do no wrong
i like IOS but i hate having to use itunes it really is the "software equivalent of cancer" tim cook spoke about
IOS sucks too, memory is full, ok i'll just delete some videos and free up space . NOPE, backup and restore with itunes , it will work if you are lucky
android is awful too
broken security a 2yo could get past ,not fixed in almost a year now
broken google maps navigation not fixed in years
backwards user account system with more broken security
lacking even the most basic common sense convince features
many default settings set to where they will cause annoyance and problems for users
i can honestly say i hate them both ,and there is really no excuse for either one of them both of these comapnies have more money than god yet continue to produce garbage and be cheap F***s when it comes to R&D
they both love to employ bottom of the barrel 3rd world labor to pinch every penny but google is worse in that respect

Also please edit out the cuss words you have in your post that you masked from the editor. It's against XDA policy as we have kids that come on here. If you want to cuss, please use the * symbol on your keyboard.
While I understand your strong feelings towards Google, may I ask why such strong feelings? Were you passed up on being hired by them? It's just that it's not every day you get to see someone post such strong words against a company that they merely purchased or didn't purchase products from. Seems like there's some personal stuff going on there.

Nothing like completely biased, unsubstantiated, blanket claims. You can easily like or dislike anything about Google or Android, but to just say they know nothing about design demonstrates your absolute ignorance on digital design or how it is accomplished.

probably never
people who can code have no common sense and people with common sense can't code
or it is just bad upper level management
i can give specific examples of glaringly obvious bad design mistakes ,but of course they will never be fixed
googles multi user account system implemented in lolipop is just awful
here is why
there is no way to hand off ownership account status to another user ,you have to wipe and factory restore the device, i found this out when setting up a tablet for a parent with my account and having to start over
but why? this makes no sense what so ever , all they had to do is just make an option to transfer ownership account status to another user account on the device, log in under primary owner account go to settings, select pass ownership status to another user select user, there done would that have been so hard?
also multi user relies on lock screen passwords instead of just prompting for the google user account password to switch between users on the device, forcing everyone using the device to use a lock screen password and to enter it every time the device goes to sleep, this is very annoying especially when using a tablet which the multi user account was ostensibly designed to be used for since typically you do not share a phone, it just makes no sense at all
also smart lock trusted devices is another mess
i figured i would just use my mi band to unlock the tablet then, but even when you set up a trusted device to use smartlock it just disables itself after "inactivity" so after few hour you have to reset it again ,no option to keep it the way you set it, turned on
it's just common sense things like this that get really annoying
also no inversion of volume rocker buttons when in landscape mode
little common sense things like this
a company with unlimited funds and unlimited resourced should not be making ridiculously obvious design mistakes like these
nor should they be leaving such major things broken for years like google maps navigation and FRP security

Doze is outstanding in Nougat. I got 5+ hours of SoT over a 38 hour period so yes, obviously, Nougat is total crap and Doze doesn't do anything...
^^^sarcasm^^^
...I do find it amazing that I can get endurance like that with no, as in zero, attempt to optimize battery drain (WiFi on, GPS on high, adaptive display on, BT on, bone stock, no root, etc.) while others are reporting problems. Regardless, all I can go by is that my 6P is not only just the best phone I ever had (last one was Note 5 that go worse with MM), it got even better with Nougat!
