I did find some threads about my questions but i was still confused.
i used to have to iphone 3gs which had 256mb ram..
so no matter even if i filled my 3gs full 16gb it still had 256mb ram to work with,..
so my question is when i am installing apps in htc aria am i using up free rom or ram???
and how do i install live wallpapers? is it just a gif file or u u have to install them just like an app ?

internal memory != ram
sd card memory != ram
in other words, when you install apps they are not taking up your RAM, they are taking up your internal memory, and if you have it configured they are taking up your sd card memory.
what ROM are you running?
They are typically apk files...you can find them all over the market. But i don't think stock allows LWPs.

i m running liberated froyo 008..
with this rom installed i get roughly 160 mb free internal storage.
does that mean my phone has 160 mb ram to work with or in the background i do have 384 mb ram??
what i am not able to understand is, in iphone 3gs there is a separate dedicated 256 mb ram to process application, while 16gb internal memory is separate which has nothing to do with ram.
while in aria its look like internal memory and ram are not different is that true??
because installing more apps is just slowing it down..
i know i can install apps on sd card, but when 5 or 6 apps are running in the backgorund aria starts lagging i have to use task manager to kill tasks which makes it lag free..

No. internal memory is different from system ram. The aria has very little internal memory, which is where your apps go, this is what you're seeing. The system has its own separate ram.
EDIT: you can see internal memory by going into your application manager. You can see your system memory by going into your running services settings.
EDIT 2: The more apps you install the higher chance you have of having more apps running, which does use system memory.

Task killers are generally bad. Search for task managers like watchdog lite. You can run a benchmark test such as Quadrant Standard to check your phone's performance. I'm running CM7 overclocked at 806 and my score ranges from 990-1040, just to give you a reference range.

Did the benchmark programs get updated to support 2.3? if they didn't, your scores are probably not accurate.
Quadrant Standard is Gingerbread compatible per the dev.

I have searched on numerous fronts but have never found the solution to my problem. The issue is, on the vibrant I have 2 GB internal memory for app installation, with 512 mb ram (I think) to run the apps, in addition to 16 GB of internal storage for files and what not.
However, having 1.4 GB 'app' memory free currently, whenever I install any further apps, some of the existing apps start to crash/restart whenever I need to use them. For example, I use LPP, and when I install some more apps on the phone, LPP homescreen icons disappear whatever action I do (open an app, use an app, etc), and then they reload for about 15-20 seconds when I go to the homescreen again. I have about 35-55 MB RAM free at any given time.
My question is, why give 2 GB app installation memory when you still cannot use it to install apps since they start giving you all sort of problems? I am running stock t-mobile eclair and have recently rooted my phone.
you know what, i think all you need is a task killer or clean your phone or something.. just find a way to free up some space.. 35-55MB is hella low.
Hmm, whats the normal free ram for stock 2.1 vibrant supposed to be? I have not tinkered around with my phone much so am wondering how it could have gotten low to that extent. All the apps that I use are also well known and from reputable developers...

dunno when i was running 2.1 i was always at 80-120 free range with apps running..
try getting a task killer and kill all running apps..
also check settings > applications > running services > tap and kill processes you dont need running

Yeah, but then what about what I wrote in my first post? It does not make sense if you can 'theoretically' install 2 GB worth of apps but renders the phone useless in function?

On average the free RAM on my phone is between 40MB -60MB, is that normal?

Also my internal memory widget is reading "414MB used out of 465MB" thats sound too high. my phone feels laggy and ive even stopped using live wallpapers, sumtimes the phone would even reboot on its own but hasnt done so in a while.
if u install too much apps without using app2sd, its normal to have that amount of ram.. i recommend u to use link2sd, u can manually select apps to move to sd. bt make sure that dont move any widget apps to sdcard or else it will stop functioning and appearing in ur widget list

That being said, Android naturally will kill processes and apps. It waits for a certain amount of time, or until the resources are needed elsewhere. You shouldn't have to wory about how much free ram you have available... Unlike Windows, Android will manage it all on it's own!

link2sd is telling me i need to partition my sd fisrt and im not sure how to, im going to try apps2ds

Second, i recommend using AutoKiller Memory Optimizer, it's super amazing and very essential app for me. I get usually more than 100 MB free RAM most of the time, and it's easy customizable, after your read the help section.

it wouldnt be a lack of memory causing a phone to reboot but the app w memory leaks causing the phone to reboot. the apps youre killing werent designed for you to kill them unexpectedly. they were designed to run any necessary cleanup routines on exit. if the app youre killing doesnt have an option to exit, then you should replace it w one that does or ask the author to provide an exit/close for the app to free itself from the list of running processes.
you're introducing dirty unintended states for the apps and the os by killing them unexpectedly. you will have immediate gains in performance and will gain unexpected problems when those same apps go to run later. lost widgets, widget data, duplicate widgets, or maybe even break an app that wasnt designed to open from a dirty state.
keep an eye on the tasks, but leave them alone if you can.

to op, i think u better try the autokiller 1st. because the link2sd and app2sd need to make partition.
1st make a fat32
2nd make a ext2
size of partition 2 put less than 1gb, i assuming u having a 8gb class 2 sdcard
the rest of it goes to fat32
ps : this require u to format ur sdcard. so make sure u backup it up in ur pc

Apps2sd needs partition as well... try a partitioning program and make a main fat32 partition and then a second one ext2 partition (i suggest 1gig max should be more than enough)
You don't want to free up ram. It messes with your phone. Your suppose to use ram

Get rid of the task killer and get AutoKiller Memory Management. I went from ~35mb free to ~135mb by changing the last 3 settings to 150, 200, 250 and never need to kill anything

Hi, i recommend the app "Taskiller Full" from AxDroid LLC ( i dont know if the free version is the same ) when i kill apps get a 150-200 free ram
do NOT use task killers. all you will succeed in doing is to use MORE battery. Andoid (which is linux based) is designed to have very little free memory. The way android handles application and memory use is it keeps frequently launched apps in memory so they launch quicker. if a task comes along that requires resources android will simply ditch the reserved memory (that is reserved in case you launch a particular app that is in memory) and will allow it to be utilised for the new app. as has been said 1000's of times before, free ram is wasted ram!
all a task killer will do is to fight against the native android instruction set, each time android attempts to launch a process into ram the task killer will kill it, and each time this happens it will chew a bit more battery life.
having a lack of ram is not necessarily the reason your handset is lagging.....the perceived lack of ram is only because it is earmarked for potential use.
my advise to you? just leave it be, maybe reboot your handset a bit more frequently, and remove some of the apps that you have installed that are fighting against android!

If you're comfortable with it, going to a custom ROM will almost always improve memory usage and system speed. I recommend leedroid.

That is a very reasonable usage of RAM memory, its not application storage.
Linux and Android attempt to maximize memory usage while keeping a certain amount free for program loading and switching. It's normal for Android to keep RAM about 75% full and intentional. That way when one of your app bits needs to run, its already in fast memory and does not need to be loaded. So you can kill apps all you want and android will just happily keep reloading them in the background and refilling that memory. That's why task killers generally ware not needed and can often slow things down by unnecessarily killing tasks that the OS will just start up again.
I am using nAa kernel 10 with MiniCM7-2.1.8 on my X10 Mini Pro with System theme. I use a PIN code for my SIM card. My SD-card is 16GB class 10 with 15.5GB FAT partition followed by 0.5GB EXT4 partition (for apps 2 SD)
My favourite apps that I have running most of the time are Swype, Keyboard Manager, TouchPal Dialer and MortPlayer. These all appear in my Running Services.
I have noticed that MortPlayer has been getting killed recently and I have noticed that Facebook and Maps are running all the time.
I think I am running out of memory and Android is killing MortPlayer. I have frozen Facebook and Maps with Titanium Backup to reclaim the RAM but this now means I have to unfreeze them to before I can use them. This is inconvenient.
At times I got down to 1.2MB RAM free. I had turned on CompCache to 18% but this did not solve all of my problems.
I read somewhere about moving the /data to /sd-ext (cache memory?) - this post is for an Arc but does the same principle apply? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1333379).
As my SD card is a fast one can I make the SD card appear as extra RAM? I realise this would slow things down as a fast SD card still cannot beat RAM speed.
Is there any benefit in keeping my /sd-ext partition on my SD card? I thought it would enable me to store more apps on the phone and still be able to plug the SD card into my PC as a mass storage device (seeing the 15.5GB FAT) to copy music while still using the phone (apps being on the 0.5GB EXT4 partition).

In my opinion phones with EXT are much slower than normal phones, I talk from my experience. My phone was much slower after i created EXT particion.
To heve more free memory I recomend RAM Manager Pro and 256 swap and of course reformat the SD card with no EXY particion;]

RAM Manager bricked my phone after setting it up and it caused major FCs after installing every app.
RAM manager doesnt/cant brick phones.
ayhow, its not very effective. The most effective app for RAM conservation, after alot of browsing i can say, is Auto Memory Manager.
I get about 75+MB RAM with MiniCM7 2.1.8 with just the launcher running.[Adw ex]
The minimum ive seen with ALOT of multitasking is 40Mb. [Ive set it in such a way that when my RAM goes less than 35Mb, it starts killing hidden/empty/secondry server apps.]

i must say i tried both and i stay with ram manager pro! its amazing how smooth my phone is now! with over 40 mb free with different apps in the backround... i use balance(more free memory) settings which its more recommended to phones like ours... its even better than supercharger,and by now no forced closes or issues... i must say i use last kernel 10 minicm 2.1.8 ondemand 122/691 mhz and no more tweaks or scripts to improve performance,just thus wonderful ap, but ram manager pro,not the free one which does not have all availanle settings... one suggestion to the buddy who open this thread is to reboot the phone after appling the new setting im sure u will feel the difference ..hope to help!
I'm using minicm 2.1.8 with nAa kernel 10,and with ram manager pro 2.1.1. I always have 60mb or more of free ram. Just awesome apk.

Problem is that when I used it for first time on rooted stock and minicm7pro, it caused bootloop at least, and I couldn't manage to do anything, didn't meant to say brick actually. On StornMix, it works normally.
I'm running dagr8s alpha 2 ics rom. And I know that it has lower ram than the gb roms. But lately I have been running Tasker (amazing app btw) numbers and it keeps notifying me that I have low ram and it might not work properly. I go to applications in settings and check my ram and it says I only have 98mb free. I end all tasks and clear ram and then still I have like 120-130 free. I'm afraid that this is a too low amount. And wanted your opinions on what I should do. Is this enough should I just ignore the warnings will Tasker still run fine? How can I get more ram? Are any of you also experiencing low ram?

Taller uses ram also. I run trebuchet launcher on alpha 2 and have no real issues. If it gets slow you can hold home and clear things out. Running a lot of widgets still affect ram also.

If you go to developer options in settings at the bottom and select the background processes and set it to 3 processes at most that helps alot...also if u change ur dalvik heap to 64 that also helps a ton...DO NOT and I repeat do not set it below 64 as u will soft brick your phone

You must understand how Android uses memory, it loads your frequentlyused programs into ram so when you go to use them, they open much faster than if they would if they had to open "fresh" each time.the lmk (low memory killer) should take care of everything if you ate currently using a process that uses a lot of memory it will kill off apps as it needs to.
Put simply: FREE RAM IS WASTED RAM.
Have a marine navigation program "Navionics USA EAST" that wouldn't open in ICS(leak and Saurom) unless I cleared RAM. No issue onstock GB, and runs fine on sgh-i777 ICS? Tried debloating leak, but didn't help much. Will try limiting running programs when back on ICS.

Free Ram is wasted ram. Never thought about it like that. I understand but i would still like some free ram just so its available for other apps i open. I did use the task manager to kill running apps and clear ram and it didnt free up that much ram that is why i was worried.

Welcome to ICS. This is exactly why I DONT like ICS - the memory footprint is huge just for ICS alone.
Free ram is not entirely wasted ram.
Let me explain.
So, my phone RAM is completely (or nearly) filled and I open a new app. There is now a long delay as Android goes to work closing app(s) down and doing garbage collection to free up memory for the new app I just tried to open but it only frees up enough for the one app I just opened.
And now, every app I go to open is going to have this long delay.
What you really want is about 80% ram usage - enough that there is free ram to open new apps without Android having to scurry around to free up a bunch of memory.
I dont know if there is a way to force a certain amount of ram to be free but imo, thats what youd really want.
I only have 6 user apps on my phone and Im running stock GB so even if I opened everything at once, there would be plenty of ram to have them open all at once (Go Launcher, Blue Skies (paid), Battery Power Widget, System Tuner Pro, BeyondPod, & Audible).
It's called "minfree memory," what you want is an app that will allow you to modify those values. Back when I had a Captivate, I used an app called AutoKiller for that purpose. I haven't needed it on the Note though. You can find it in the Android market.

yea i think thats normal because the phone system uses some of that ram to make the phone work. Like if you ever had a sd card or an ipod that was say an 8gb ipod you actually only have like 7.66gb free.
But yeah I would like more ram availabe so the phone can load apps quickly and wont have to waste time closing stuff. I dont think free ram is wasted ram
As said before, Android uses ram differently since it based upon Linux. If the entire ROM runs around 600-800mB and most of it gets loaded into RAM, this will leave you with 400-200mB free RAM but the entire OS is already loaded and ready to go! Once you load a RAM intensive application, Android/Linux kernel will free space for that application.
I believe GPU consumes an excess of RAM to handle this beast's resolution/size.
I have to go back to GB. Delay in apps opening is getting old compared to i777 daily driver.
