Hello guys. I'm new to smartphones and Vibrant is my first. I bought one off ebay for $240 and it has Android version 2.1-update1 installed on it. I would like to know if you guys recommend that I ungrade it to Froyo or above. I've heard some bad things about Froyo and wouldnt like to regret doing the update. I've already backed up all apps on the phone. Just need your professional opinion on this matter. Thank you.
Well welcome to the world of the samsung Vibrant, lol, well obviously froyo us the best and You should upgrade and if you want, You should root your device and learn to put a "ROM" on ur phone like the ones below, and FYI, since u posted this in the wrong place, your gonna get flamed, next time post in vibrant Q and A.

A ROM is pretty much your OS. All these Froyo ROMs are really good, just know how to flash properly. I STRONGLY suggest you:
1) Consistently backup all your apps with "Titanium Backup" and google, AND make a copy of all your data on your computer.
2) READ, I suggest you read the Bible (it's Stickied at the top) and LEARN before you do ANYTHING.
3) And lastly, when you mess up, as EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE has, you will need to know how to revert back to STOCK firmware.
Keep this link close, it will save your neck:

For some reason Titanium Backup does not work for me. When I run it I get 0 as a number of apps installed and when I click backup all apps and system files it immediately says backup completed. I've been using the Flii Backup. Is that okay? How do I copy all the stuff to my PC? Thank you for all the info.
Also, should I go with the 2.3 Gingerbread version instead?

when you open Titanium Backup, does it say that it has been granted SU permissions?
If it does, then we're good so far. I've had that happen when I first used TiB on my hubby's phone. The way I got over that was to hit the menu button and select "Batch". You should now be on the Batch Backup/Restore - ALL page. From there, I selected RUN for "Backup all user apps + system data". That should force TiB to go ahead and make the backups.
Now, as for copying the files over onto your PC, just use plug in your USB cable and connect it to your PC. Your phone should emit a little tone or vibrate after this (or at least mine does but it's been a long time since I've used stock). From there, slide down your notifications bar (slide your finger from the top of the screen to the bottom of it) and you should see a note telling you that your USB is connected and if you hit that, it will ask you if you would like to mount your SD card (or something similar to that). Select "yes" and your PC will ask you if you want to open these "drives". Select "yes" again and now you will be able to explore the files on your phone the same way you'd do it on your PC.
As for the whole copy+paste thing, the files work the same as if you're copying files around your PC. Generally, I keep multiple backups on my PC, so it might be a smart idea to label your Titanium Backup file with name or date (ie: Titanium Backup - Stock JFD or Titanium Backup - ROMname blahKernel).
Afaik, we don't have a stable Gingerbread ROM yet but I think our devs are getting pretty close. However, we have several stable Froyo ROMs available in the Android Dev section.

Yes. It seems to work now. I've used the Clockwork Recovery app and did backup through it. Would that be enough? Where is the Android Dev section? What do I do next? Thank you.
As far as the ROM goes. Which one would you recommend? I was looking at the Axura 2.3.1.0 and Ginger Clone R2. How about Nero v5? Thanks guys!
Welcome! And yes you should definitely update to Froyo, or a rom based on Froyo. I'm not sure what you heard that soured your opinion of Froyo...but it is a noticeable performance upgrade! It's been a while but I'm pretty sure the JIT compiler was introduced with 2.2 (someone fact check me pls) which should improve java performance multiple times.
I recommend Bionix-V 1.21 for a custom ROM made especially for the Vibrant. It's extremely fast and the community is friendly, helpful, and most importantly VERY active. I linked you to a guide that should answer any questions you might have regarding the rom, and android in general.

Yeah, forgot to mention that...but hey if you're gonna try the rom you might as well join their site ;P
Update: Ok, guys. I went to this link and got the Axura 2.3.1.0 installed with the use of this video, which is very useful and I was able to perform this flash flawlessly.
Anyway, The ROM is really responsive and I have only found one flaw, which is that the Fast Web Install app does not work on it. I get the message that they are working on it. Also, the Titanium Backup did not back up anything. All was backed up by the ROM Manager and the Flii Backup.
This ROM has impressed me with its responsiveness. It seems like a high-quality ROM and this is the first time I did the flash, so I'm not familiar with other ROMs. However, this ROM seems like a good pick for now at least. Can you guys advise me where I can sign up for notifications about the Axura updates? Any further suggestions? I appreciate your precious time.
In the Questions and Answers section, at the top, there is a NOOB guide... I would HIGHLY suggest reading it. It explains just about EVERYTHING you could want to do to your new phone!
As far as your next mod... start customizing your phone! Go to the Theme section of the forum and browse around for some custom battery mods and framework mods. It's CRAZY amazing how customizable these phones are!
I used to use the ROM's on here, but since Froyo came out, I'm sticking with a deodexed stock of KB1 (the latest and greatest update). That allows me to modify my framework and all the phone images without having to worry about screwing up one of the custom ROMs out there. I always feel safer with stock... plus root of course. Replaced my boot and shutdown animations with custom ones I created... don't have them posted on here as they are made specifically for my band and noone here would want them!
Keep your contacts synced to google so you don't lose them, backup with Titanium every once in a while to keep your game data and app data up to date, keep reading on here about modding, you could start reading the google developers website to learn about the inner workings of Android and how to write programs... so much to do and so little time in life!!!
Enjoy!
P.S. Everything that I've done to my phone (and it is quite a bit) I've done myself simply by reading these forums and researching everything on my own... you would be surprised how little you have to post questions on here if you simply take some time and read everyone else's posts. The search button up on top of every page is very useful!
Fair warning: I've never rooted a phone before. I've dabbled in ADB with my nook color, but am far from comfortable with it. I installed Honeycomb on the nook color, then decided to just go simple with autonooter.
Now, I'm thinking of rooting my new Thunderbolt. Mostly because I'd like to get rid of all of the bloatware and try to get all of the performance out of my phone as I can get. After having the Droid1 for a couple of years, I do not want to see my phone get laggy like my D1 did.
So here come the beginner questions: once I root the phone, I know I need to get ROM Manager and Titanium Backup. Those apps will let me be able to get back all of my data and preferences, etc once I switch ROMs right?
What else will I need after rooting? Is it a simple process to flash a new ROM?
Can anyone suggest a (mostly) stock ROM that just gets rid of the bloatware and gives the phones performance a boost?
Also, does a rooted phone require a lot of maintenance? For instance, will I have to be updating ROMS often? Also, if an OTA comes out for non-rooted phones, do these updates get worked into the ROMs quickly? I dont want to be without a necessary update, ya know?
Last question: Once I root my phone, should I just cancel the insurance on the phone? Or does "voiding the warranty" only mean that VZW wont fix it for free?
Thanks!
First off, I highly recommend following this rooting method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616 and not using the easy root method. If you have any problems at all, you can log into http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951190 and get some help. I also highly recommend reading up a bit on ADB, what it is and how it works http://www.xda-developers.com/android/adb-easy-tutorial/
Then...once you get rooted use ROM Manager to flash the clockworkmod recovery. In ROM Manager there's a little fix that everyone's been doing: open ROM Manager, menu>clear download cache, then settings>erase recovery. Then do your backup before you do anything else like flashing another ROM. Use Titanium to backup all your apps. I recommend the paid versions of both since you will be using them a lot.
Added: What I usually do the first time: Root, backup rom, install debloated rom, set everything up like I want it and then backup again. Each time I flash a new ROM, I create a backup of it all set up and with the name so that I can easily switch back and forth. I like change
The basic debloat rom is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000103
It's easy to flash a new ROM, just download the one you want, put it on your sdcard and then use ROM Manager to 'install from sdcard'
You are going to be flashing ROMs left and right because they come out so fast. Each time an update is out, it'll be put into a ROM and released for all of us here so that you stay current. Most OTA updates will remove your root, so I wouldn't suggest applying them. Many ROMs will block the OTA updates, but not all of them do; at least in my experience.
I would not recommend getting rid of your insurance, it is different than the warranty and you can get your phone replaced if it's ever damaged. I've used it 3 times now all on rooted phones. It indeed will void the warranty.
Happy rooting!
^ +1. I did use the easy root method and had no problems with it but it is truly still hit or miss. I am sure it will get better as more developers start pushing new stuff out.
Good luck
Thanks for the reply!
Why dont you recommend using the easy root method that I've been reading so much about? I realize it has some faults, but I'm planning on waiting until an updated version comes out. I'm a bit afraid to brick my phone while trying to root the phone myself.
Also, after rooting, how can i do a backup of my apps? Doesnt rooting wipe all of the data on my phone?
Learning ADB would be helpful...I must admit, I am an easy root junkie. I just don't have the time to learn ADB. Maybe someday that will change.
Rooting will wipe your phone and I use Titanium Backup to back up my apps. It does make it a lot easier once you start flashing ROMs on a daily basis
Because the non-easy method doesn't have any flaws, thus has a lot less chance of bricking your phone. If you copy and paste, then you reduce your chance to brick to practically 0.

So to answer my previous question: When rooting, I'm still going to lose all of my current information including apps, sms, etc. However, its good to backup my phone before installing the debloated rom.
Is that correct?
Correct - when you root your phone, you're wiping everything except the sdcard, so you need to backup your apps and such.
And we should stop using the term 'not-easy' root ... how about 'less easy', it's not as scary
Another quick question: I downloaded all of the necessary files.
When I try to open up the RUU_Mecha zip file, it tells me that the file is invalid or corrupted.
I've downloaded it twice from different sources and this happened both times.
Any idea why this is the case?
Can anyone point me to where I can get a non-corrupt version?

you don't open the files. The exploit one is the one you unpackage to your tools directory. The other you will put on your sdcard when told too. you can join #root and get help if you want.
as far as apps, the market 'should' reload all your apps when you wipe data just give it time. Then use titanium to back them all up.
So ADB is basically finding the root copy and paste and run ? .

ADB is learning what you are doing to your phone instead of letting a program do it for you. Copy/paste is just so there are no typos if you don't feel as comfortable typing it all out. I recommend reading up on ADB so that you have a bit of knowledge of what you are doing.

Titanium backup only works after you're rooted.
You can use a program like Mybackup Pro to backup stuff like sms mms, etc.

As a first time rooter myself, I ended up doing the original root process. The well written instructions helped me not to feel paranoid and I breezed through the steps. While, I was confident in rooting the phone because of the instructions, I don't feel so confident post root because I don't know how to do many of the elements like flash roms, kernels, apply mods, etc. So my question is, are there any guides for flashing new roms and the steps taken before and after? For instance, let's say I wanted to flash adrynalyne's no bloat rom, and his mod package, how do I go about doing it? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

If I root and remove bloatware manually, will OTA updates occur automatically, or do I have the option of blocking them. Would they re-install all of the bloatware I removed?
Ok I'm building this out some more. I added to the bottom of this post with future changes and am asking for requests of what the community wants in a this. Please read entire op. It's not that long yet..... Yet. Lol. It will be I forgot to nab a couple for changelog. I will get on Ubuntu and format this for the site but I'm on tapatalk til that happens.
So..
How many times have you flashed a new ROM or an update and had to go through the hassle of reinstalling or restoring all your must have apps? I usually have about 60 to 80 apps that I was installing/restoring with titanium backup. It's a pain. You gotta sign into Google and go DL titanium backup or whatever app you use. Wait while it installs all your apps. That, I guess, is if you have TiBu pro, if not its one by one. A painstaking process to say the least.
Well I was sick of it so I did something about it. I made a flashable zip you can add your apps to and flash from recovery to bulk install as many apps as you like all at once.
Here is a simple but endlessly useful tool I whiped up. What this allows the user to do is take any amount of apk files that you want (granted you have enough room) and restore them in a painless onetime flash from recovery.
Simple to use. Just follow this quick guide to get started.
Step 1. Download the file at the bottom of this post. Save it to your SD card wherever you can remember where it is.
Step 2. Using root explorer extract the zip folder to wherever you want to, I recomend makeing a temp folder to work in.
Step 3. Using root explorer or astro file manager navigate to your data/app folder.
Step 4. Start a multiple selection and choose all apps that you would like from your data/app folder to be automatically flashed back to your device next time you need to do so.
Step 5 COPY don't MOVE your selections to the data/app folder of the bulk-installerV1 that you extracted earlier.
Step 5.5 At this time if you have other apks you want to use that are not in there already now is your chance to get them in there as well.
Step 6. Rezip with root explorer or astro. And if you so choose rename the zip to update.zip and place on the root of your sd card. Or leave the original name if you prefer.
That's all, now next time you flash a new ROM or wipe your data and want your base apps back all you need to do is flash it from recovery. Or if you renamed it to update.zip and put in sdcard root you can choose apply sdcard update.zip and it will do it thing.
I have tested this on my evo3d and it works great, I wrote it on my phone with root explorers file editor so I made sure to test it with both twrp and cwm5.

No it will not save data of any sort. Next version I will see about writing some more to the updater to be able to add data to. That's more reading. This is my first albiet simple script, and ill add to it for sure. However you can put TiBu in the update folder and when you boot up it'll be a few seconds extra to restore just data for certain apps instead of the whole app.
Update...
I'm working on building my "superzip". I will update the op when I get there.
But expected additions are..
Incorporate init.d path for custom scripts.
system/app option.
Cleanup after flash (cache and dalvik)
Path for themes, add what you want.
Two versions also, one with system tweaks from our awesome devs. I'm currently building it and asking permissions to bake in stuff from certain developers and various mods and tweaks from various developers on xda. I want to add the stuff. But further, I would ask everyone what tweaks they might want written in. Please throw stuff out and ill get to putting this together.
Till then.

I think i will create two of them, one for Sense roms and the other for AOSP. =)
I use the same setup for both but all my apps are pretty much compatible with both sense and aosp. Remember no data goes just fresh apps on a fresh ROM. Simple and as custom as you make it.

I tend to use a lot more apks on aosp because of theme builder themes, go launcher and go sms themes, and certain apps to replace sense widgets.
It worked beautifully. Thanks. That temp file is still in the extracted section of root explorer. So in the future as I am adding more apps can I just put them in there and rezip? also I renamed the temp file to update and I had to flash it. Thats not a problem but it sounded like changing the name to update would give an easier way to install. How does that work? Either way I'll be using this from now on. It kind of reminds me of the sashimi days( I think that is what it was called) from windows mobile

The simplest way is just restoring the data partition from recovery. It restores both the apps and the associated data, so you don't lose anything.
btw, nice work, just not for me, too much work for such little return.

FAQ..
Till then.

Been reading/researching for the last week or two; and the solid info keeps leading me back here to xda!
As a long time personal system builder with some OC'ing experience and flight sim beta testing, I'm starting my trek to the dark side of these android phones.
Just upgraded the wife from an original razr to the X2, and she's perfectly happy. I'm waiting on Santa for a new Droid Razr. So, my plan is to get started on the X2 with the goal of rooting it, then immediately doing a backup using Moon Shadow's excellent stickys along with the help of anyone else that wishes to post. Thinking the X2 experience should help to calm my nerves once I really get into the Razr.
Couple of questions that are sticking in my mind right now are:
Am I understanding the stickys correctly that I should be doing the nandroid backup immediately after rooting? This includes backing up before installing any optional apps such as TI, etc?
In Moon Shadow's Nandroid and Backup Recovery, it's recommended to use Dropbox to get the Recovery APK over on the phone and installed. Any other methods that will work equally well? Would a simple copy/paste of the APK to the sd card suffice? Or would I at least need some sort of apk "installer" to finish the install?
Also, any other apps to keep this X2 lean and clean so as to make it as simple and pain free as possible for the wife? She likes simple/easy to use. I'll be providing tech support and keeping it as optimal as possible.
I'll close this long ass post with a simple THANK YOU to all the members/devs here on xda for tolerating us "noobs" and providing a wealth of info for those wishing to learn the "right" way!
A nandroid is a good idea after rooting imo. Although you can always sbf back to stock if need be. The reason it's a good idea is if you are going to remove stock apps yourself, you can restore back to stock rooted if you remove something important that screws up your phone.
You can copy/paste the apk to your sdcard, no problem. You'll want a file browser to get to it and install. Personally I like Root Browser, Root Explorer, or Astro. You should be able to install through any of those.

First I'd just like to say welcome. You're in for a good time. Nandroids are just good to keep as a refference point so that if your phone gets messed up you can just restore the backed up image vs having to sbf, reroot etc. You are more than welcome to install any apps you would like before a nandroid backup but I recommended doing it before you flash anything or start making modifications that require root permissions.
As far as the recovery Apk is concerned, I just keep it on my external SD, that way I can just find it with root explorer or a similar directory app and install it from there. Very simple. There is no installer app needed, just turn on the setting that allows third party apps, select it within the directory and you should be given the option to install.
Not really sure what you need to keep everything simple. Maybe some specifics would help. I could suggest looking into different Widgets so you can have access to certain things right on the homescreen.
Glad to see you here!

I do nand backups regularly and delete the old(usually keep 2 most recent just in case) to keep up to date and before changing roms or updating. you can also restore just the data if you go into Advanced Restore and choose data restore as long as your previous rom you did the backup on and the current rom you are restoring it to are on the same version (2.2.2, 2.3.3, 2.3.4, 2.3.5+ are all different). Its typically not required to restore when updating although some roms will in earlier testing stages sometimes or if a drastic change occurs to the rom but its a good idea to back it up prior just in case.
As far as apk files are concerned the easiest way for me to keep them is emailed to myself through gmail because you can install the app straight from your email without having to download it to the phone(there will be an install button in the body of the email when checking it from your phone). You can email them to yourself on the computer and move them to a special file to save space on your internal or external sd and keep the files for whenever you might need them.
As far as "keeping it clean"...just flash a clean rom and choose a script you can find and read about in the development section that will tailor your needs best. in my opinion apps that are made to save battery, free memory, and keep programs from running only make the phone slower and use more battery because those types of apps will always be running and therefore counterproductive. There are some good root apps out(search "root" on market) that help out a good deal, but they are few and far between imo. Just find what you like(or she likes), the more you find out about these phones the more uses you find in it.
Good luck

Yes, at this point I'd prefer to restore back to stock rooted vs. sbf; and it's good to know I've got both as options.
Right now leaning towards Root Explorer.
Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks for the welcome. Truly appreciated!
Glad to hear the simplified procedure for installing the apk. I'm sure once I get it rooted, and a solid backup saved, I'll take some time to evaluate what to add app wise along with the Widgets.

From my reading/research I have it burned to memory to always stay with the same version when restoring! Her X2 is currently on 2.3.4 via the OTA update.
Good idea on using the gmail account! Had no idea this way was an option.
Once I get over the initial shock of getting it rooted and backedup, I'm sure I'll look at a custom ROM if she allows it. Just need to do additional research on how to choose the right ROM for her needs. And right now, I'm totally in the dark on choosing a "script"; but I'll also learn this as I go.
Thanks for your feedback!
Preliminary Game Plan
At this point, I've put together an initial game plan. Currently have on the desktop pc: Pete's Root Tools v1.07, RSD Lite v5.6 along with the GB 2.3.4 SBF, and the MOTO_Bootstrap_signed.rar (apk).
Please feel free to confirm or correct my plan.
1. Root the phone via Moon Shadow's X2 Tutorial using Pete's v1.07.
2. Once Pete's tool gives me confirmation that the phone is rooted, upgrade SU and Busybox via the Market. Sure would like a confirmation on this step!
3. Prior to the backup, copy the Droid X2 Recovery APK over to the external sd card, dl Root Explorer which is going to let me "install" the Recovery APK.
4. Follow Moon Shadow's X2 nandroid/backup Tutorial by launching the Recovery APK and following his Backup prodedure.
5. My plan is to backup to the external sd card so I can also keep a copy on the desktop along with one on an external thumb drive. Sorry if I sound too redundant!
A few of the apps I plan on purchasing/dl'ing (don't mind contributing small $ for the pro/pay versions as I hope it thanks them for their hard work and encourages continued upgrades) are:
TI Backup Pro
Root Explorer (File Manager)
My Backup Pro (for the wife's contacts, messages, photos, etc.)
Again, all feedback/corrections/confirmations will be appreciated!
Thanks!

YES GET ROOT EXPLORER
it will.make ur.life SO MUCH EASIER in the.long run. You will definitely get your moneys worth within the first 2weeks of using it. Simple UI and very efficient set-up. All u need for a root file explorer. BEST choice
I don't use TI backup...
Anything TI does can be done manually by using root explorer to copy apks to sdcard..
I lied...ti can backup data for apps as well...but I have seen problems arise sometimes...I just personally don't use it...
I recommend bloat freezer if u plan on freezing any apps ...it is like dipping the apps in liquid nitrogen...best app freezer available PERIOD...((TI "freezes" as well but uses a different process and some apps don't "freeze" all the way))) ur choice tho experimentation is KEY and us the main point have fun with it..as long as u have a nandroid or sbf file u are good to try TONS of stuff knowing u will be able to get back easily.
Can't comment on "my backup pro" but I can say that if u store your contacts synced to google and/or backup assistant that they will always be available to u. They get backed up to an o line account (gmail for google...myverizonwirelessc.com>>>backup assistant ))) photos get stored on sdcard and shouldn't be deleted unless u choose to format sd cards.
---------- Post added at 09:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:37 PM ----------
Oh...and updating the superuser app itself isn't necessary ....good idea to update its binary tho....but do NOT worry bout it....the first time u grant SU permission to something it will ask u if u want to update the binary and u can just press the notification in the pulldown window to do it....
Busybox ----. U can if u want to.
But if u flash eclipse it comes with busybox 1.19.gitadrynaline...
Not sure what is installed when initially rooted...never checked...
if u want to update I recommend that version...I've never had any issues with it. And it isn't an app. It is installed to system/xbin I believe....it allows for different commands/scripts to work properly....someone can explain better than me if u need to know what it does...
u can update busybox via busybox installer from market....there are a couple...most are pretty fond of the one made by jrummy ....

Thanks for all the detailed info! Things have been hectic the last few days, so my plan is to get started this weekend when I have plenty of un-interrupted time.
Really looking forward to this, and I'll post my results back once I've made some progress.
Truly appreciate the feedback!

Hahaha I didn't realize how long that.post actually got lol.
Sometimes I ramble and go on tangents so if I confused ya at any point don't hesitate to ask me to clarify
If you get titanium then you should probably pass on my backup pro, it'd be redundant as titanium can backup user data like texts and progress in games etc. just setup a regular backup schedule in TiBu and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for pointing that out! My concern was to have solid/secure backups of everything important along with the wife's contacts, messages, etc, etc, etc, so if I screw up the I can retrieve everything she uses daily/regularly.
Will do some more research on the apps once I get the root and nandroid bu secure.

ash: since it appears your familiar with Root Explorer, I'm wondering if the app allows me to use it on other phones I own without having to pay for it again? I sent an inquirey to speedsoftware.co.uk, and their reply didn't really answer my question.
With TiBU Pro, they mail you a "key" and once the free version is installed on another phone, placing the .txt key file in the correct folder allows another phone to have the premium version.
At least that's my understanding.........

Rooted!
Wanted to follow up and let everyone know that I got the wife's X2 rooted following Moon Shadow's excellent Tutorials; and it worked perfectly! After rooting, I updated SU and Busybox through the market. After installing/launching the bootstrap apk, was able to do a complete nandroid following the BU/Restore Tutorial. Had one hiccup that was self-induced while attempting to start the system recovery, but removing the battery and rebooting allowed my second attemp to work flawlessly.
A big THANKS for everyone's help and support. Have to say TiBU and Root Explorer are definitely recommended apps. Have removed/froze most of the bloat listed here at the forum and have been backing up along the way. Phone is working fine.
Now, to continue my research on considering a custom ROM like Eclipse......
Thanks again!

Don't get left in the dark flash eclipse lol
Have fun in ur research. Reading and learning is one of the best parts doing this stuff..you will feel bit overwhelmed at first until you realize how "simple" things can be.
One bit of.knowledge for ya ---i... HIGHLY recommend that you use Bloat /CIQ freezer from.market for freezing any apps https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bloatfreezer.free
trust me on this. It will freeze apps better than TI does. I have read before and noticed first hand((I only used TI twice)) that some apps still run when frozen with TI. Those same apps when frozen with bloat freezer are like solid ice cubes floating in liquid nitrogen. They WILL NOT run until defrosted.
And if I want to remove any apps I just use root explorer to move the apk to my external sd card if I want a backup or I just straight delete it if I don't want it at all.
Have fun!

Appreciate the info on bloatfreezer! Even though I've got TuBU Pro, I realize after a few uses that I'm more comfortable with root explorer! And I have noticed a couple of apps that are frozen but still appear in the apps listing.
I'll definitely consider bloatfreezer once I've determined if it can coexist (for my use) with TiBU or should I uninstall TiBU first.
Thanks!
Hi guys,
i'm still very new to this whole Android world and learning each day so please help me understand this problem i'm having. My phone is i9305 (EU model) just for reference.
First off i would like to know if this is possible to do without rooting or hacking since i like to be able to do OTA update and not mess to much with the phone if possible. If this is not possible then i could root. I actually tested rooting using the CF-Auto-root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
So What i like to know is how can i backup and restore my phone is the same shape as it is today. I know that i cant back-up my private data without rooting and for now lets say i dont care about that part. What i like is to be able to backup all
- the applications
- my folders and how i can organized everything
- my desktop and how i have organized everything
- everything else like my background and other system settings.
I tried one to do a system restore+clear cache and my phone was reseted as my day one. When i connected to my google account it started downloading all my applications but sadly everything was just dumped in the application window without my previous structure so google dont save any settings. I did get my background and contact/calendar info back which was good.
So does anyone know how one can make a type of backup/restore i'm after?
I tested titanium backup and my Backup (when i had rooted) but didnt see an option for the mentioned features.
ps. Since i used iPhone i'm a bit spoiled, itunes does a great job doing a proper backup with the whole application/user data when making backup and the restore does restore everything like all your settings, background, folders where you organized the applications so i'm looking for something similar in Android. I had expected Kies to do this but it only saves basic stuff which seems to be the same as Google saves in the cloud (like contacts and such)
Grateful for any tips in this regard.

It seems the CWM is the way to go. Seems like a very powerful tools. One thing i still dont know is if it back up the whole OS or just the application/data ?
For instance if i do a backup when i'm on build AB and then install AC and clean my system and do a restore what do i end up with?
AC + all my applications and settings?
or
AB + all my applications and settings?
just search for the definition of nandroid backup, don't expect spoonfeeding

If you know the answer why not just say it? This type if attitude isn't really helping me (or others as i seen you do the same on other threads). I will search more on it still but please remember why we are in this section and forum in the first place. If i knew what to look for i wouldnt ask. I have searched on the topic it but with thousands of threads its pretty much impossible to get a clear understanding of things and as mentioned i'm not that familiar with Android world.
it might be hard to imagine for you but not everyone are familiar with the rooting and hacking world and all the abbreviations and much of what is discussed is hard to follow for beginners like me.
Atleast if you want to be helpful provide a link or something

Install a custom recovery like clock work mod to do a full back up (nandroid backup). Download Rom manager to install the recovery (must be rooted)
Back up EFS what you can find an app to do.
Use Titanium backup to back up Apps and data.
If you want to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
Ashley covered it all. Breakdown:
To back up your ROM you need a custom recovery installed. Boot into it and select backup. This backs up absolutely everything at that moment in time.
-Your ROM settings, apps including data and settings, messages received.
However you can't transfer your app data between ROMs because it's part of an entire image. So you use Titanium to back up (for apps+app data) which can be used all over the place.
You'll want this if you ever switch back to an old ROM as when you restore that ROM you can restore your Titanium to update the app data associated to that ROM.
You can back up your launcher layout if it's third party as it's an app. Touch wiz launcher I don't think so.
Exynos SIII; CM10.1
Don't use rom manager for CWM.. I've seen it brick more phones than anything.
well, I told you want to search for. check the first rule of xda
the easiest i would say would Titanium backup pro. phone needs to be rooted. you sync to dropbox and other clouds.

Thank you for your valuable input. I think the conclusion is that titanium backup pro is the best way to go since i want to be able to use different ROMs. And nandroid backup if i want to restore on the same ROM. I actually have bought titanium backup pro so i will "play" with that once i root my phone again (not a big fan of rooting and stuff since i can use OTA update but it seems like the only option).
do you know if i actually get back everything as i have today (including folder structure on desktop and application menu) ?
I spend lots of time on doing this so its good to know before i try to wipe my phone and try
@Glebun, i think someone else need to read the rules as well! if i had to guess i would say you just post to get a high number of post under your name. You dont contribute to the discussion and are somewhat hostile in your posts. This attitude isnt helpful and is not appreciated by anyone. So if you cant help i suggest you simply dont post. And i repeat what i said earlier that i had investigated but when you are new sometimes you need someone to push you in the right direction and advice you which is the point of this forum and section. As you see there are many people who helped me and i appreciate that. You on the other hand just complain and wasted yours and my time on nothing useful. Please think twice before posting next time.
