Just wondering of the procedure is the same as the captivate to view app that at&t normally blocks in the android market
Go to the online marketplace with your desktop and the app will be sent to your phone. Don't think that ATT can block it that way.
That doesn't work either. I tried it just to see by installing barnacle tethering. When you choose the device all of mine are grey and can't be chosen.
there is a thread in Atrix Development forum that will direct you on how to change the APN of your phone to get free tethering without an app.
here it is...

grrrrr.....can someone please help!!! I have seen multiple posts about this and I cannot believe there is not a long term fix.
Background
I have a GT 10.1 purchased from the USA...wifi only. I currently live in China. I have a Google account setup with a US credit card. I am using a VPN which gives a Utah IP address. I still cannot see most paid apps in Marketplace nor download and install many. I have many friends with iPads that do not have this restriction but I desperately want to stay with Android, but cannot believe Google has made this so frustrating.
Non-solution
Please do not recommend MarketEnabler. This app may work fine for some units if they have a radio but it does not work for wifi only devices.
Solution
I am able to get it to work following these instructions, but I have to do this every time and it is a pain....there has to be some setting or program that will make this easier. Can anyone please help me and the multitude of others that post about this same thing? There has to be some setting in build.prop or something that is controlling this. Thank you in advance.
1) Go into Settings>Applications>Manage Applications. Find Market and force stop it then clear cache.
2) Go into Settings>Accounts and sync and remove all of your google accounts. (I have not always had to perform this step but often it is required for some reason. Don't worry they are easy to add back and nothing gets deleted.)
3) Connect to a USA VPN.
4) Add back your main Google account that has an associated US credit card.
5) Open Market place and when you do you will have to agree to the terms and conditions again. Accept this. At this point you should be able to find and download most of those apps that you could not previously.
6) Now you can add back in all of your other Google accounts if you have more.
Please someone help us....there has to be an easier way!
Sorry to bother, but can anyone recommend a better way around this? Thank you.

There are no solution for this. They are too stupid for this, too busy acquiring companies.
You realize that its not that hard to download the said application's apk and installing them directly to the tablet.

Sorry but this is the problem....I know it is easy to sideload an application but the problem is that they cannot even be downloaded from the website. When I go to the Market from a PC it shows my tablet but it is greyed out and I am not able to just download the apk.

If you have a SIM card from another country (your home country maybe?) , switch that into your SIM slot after removing you China Mobile/China Unicom SIM. Then you install the app with the foreign country SIM and once done, put in your China SIM once again
Source: I regularly do this to my HTC Desire and wife's Galaxy S2 and we live in China.
However, if you do not have SIM from another country, you're SOL. If you find out another way to do this, please let me know as well with the Note 10.1
I need help understanding VPN. I've rooted my Note 2 so that I can use it as a hot spot. Do I need to use VPN so that Verizon doesn't know that I'm sharing my 4G or is this not really necessary? If so, do I sign into my VPN service on my Note 2 or just on the device that I'm using to connect to the Note 2's hot spot? If I only need to sign in to VPN on the device that's connecting, I guess that means that I would only sign in to VPN on the Note 2 if I'm connecting to a public WiFi? Thanks.
I don't use the hotspot feature very often.
A vpn= virtual private network. If you are just tethering, you have no need for a vpn. Either use treve's wireless tether apk, or install a rom where the naive tethering is unlocked. Does this answer your question well enough?

And if the OP is really paranoid about getting caught like I was he could always use PDANet from the Play Store.

I searched and found nothing for exactly what I'm looking for. Apologies if there is and I didn't find it.
I've tried these two programs...
- ClockWork Tether
- PDANet+
They work great... except when I try to stream from Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/Etc...
I'm looking for a way to stream videos through these major streaming sites with my AT&T HTC One without AT&T knowing I'm tethering to a laptop or a desktop.
I've tried both of these and found I could browse the web just fine... but when I hit Netflix, for example, it tells me I don't meet the requirements for the stream... which is related to how Tether/PDANet+ proxy the connection... I'm guessing.
The site doesn't see the laptop/computer as a viable streaming platform.
Has anyone ever gotten either of these, or a 3rd app, to work by streaming content but at the same time hiding from AT&T's tether detectors?
HTC One
Cyanogen MOD 10.1
Any help or a firm "THIS CAN'T BE DONE" would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Thank you! Worked. To be more specific on what to search for in Shortcut Master (Lite), its "$apnsettingsactivity" without the quotes. The app name will be "Settings" and more detailed info about the app will show "com.android.settings.Settings$ApnSettingsActivity".
Any way I could get a bit more step-by step instructions? Thanks in advance! This would be a godsend considering how Boost's mobile hotspot service is $10 for 2Gb... That's bad news when Battlefield 4 puts out updates that are 1,500 Mb. :banghead:

Download "Shortcut Master (Lite)" from Google Play store. Open the app and go to the options menu by clicking on the vertical 3 dots at the top right corner. Click on "Search...". Where it says "Enter text to search" at the bottom, type in "$apnsettingsactivity" without the quotes. The app name will be "Settings" and more detailed info about the app will show "com.android.settings.Settings$ApnSettingsActivity". With my phone, it only popped up with that. If yours pops up with more apps after searching, just look for this field-> "com.android.settings.Settings$ApnSettingsActivity". Click on it and click "Launch". Now you will be in the APNs window. Select the APN that is in use (bubbled in). Now you will be in the Edit access point window. Scroll down and look for "APN type". Select that and put in the field that pops up "default, mms, dun" without the quotes. Click "OK". Now, I believe the final step is to restart your phone. Your all set
Not working for me?
It seems I'm not able to save apn.
Anyone know if the latest software update breaks this?
I did this with full updates today. Works fine. Make sure you save at top right by the dots drop down. Install a Wi-Fi tethering app.
Anyone comment on what is lost by putting in default, mms, dun?
Instead of dun mine said hipri or something. Worried I lost something and dun should just be added at the end. I should have taken a ss.
Edit it is hipri. Seems no reason to remove it. Still researching though.

I wish there was a way to add a toggle to the notification drop-down.
All the toggle apps on the market are hideous and/or slow, so I slapped together a clean little app with Tasker app factory that toggles the mobile hotspot on or off instantly: tinyurl dot com slash gs9lgkf (new user, can't post links)
edit: you still need to edit your apn obviously.

Hate to have to ask 4 something not even related to this discussion but..... I'm looking at getting the ZTE Warp Elite 5.5" phone with Boost Mobile but...... cannot find a link on XDA 4 rooting & would be nice but not necessary anything to do with TWRP!!! To me a phone is handicapped to h*** and back without TWRP but........... root would be enough to get me to purchase.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated bro
zach
zte warp elite root.
Can you use Shortcut Master to help root process of the ZTE warp elite n9518? You can unlock free hotspot no root necessary.
After using the shortcut master to hotspot, hotspot in 4g is very very slow.
My other phone is 3 g and is acceptable speed at 3g.
Is there Any way to control the network speed of the zte warp elite while hotspoting.
My phone refuses to operate 3g hotspot. I use a $35 plan, just wondering whether 3g on zte would be faster, if I could control it.
I have an Alcatel OneTouch Pixie Glitz. Tracfone. Android ver. 4.4.2 No modifications at all.
I want to enable the hotspot on my phone, but the option to do that is missing from the settings. I tried several apps to enable with no success. I asked for a solution on another forum and was directed here. Could someone explain what I need to do and/or direct me to a guide?
Thanks
Your carrier probably charges extra for that service. Mine does.

I checked Tracfone's site and could not find anywhere that said they offered that service. I might have been willing to pay for it if they offered it.

If you can find a root method for your device, then you can use one of the hotspot/tethering apps from the PlayStore, you'll have to try a variety of hotspot apps, some of them can be made to work with a few adjustments to their in-app settings(some require a bit more to get working, such as, edits to your build.prop file or some terminal commands).
There's no specific suggestion I can give you because it doesn't work the same for all devices and android versions. You'll have to do some researching and experimentation to find something that works.

I did some research and saw that if you manage to turn on the hotspot you will get a warning from Tracfone.
Are there any hotspot/tethering apps that disguise this usage?

I have been using hotspot/tether on Straight Talk(TracFone) for over 5 years with 4 different devices, I haven't done anything to hide it and I've used a large amount of data while hotspotting/tethering. I haven't received any kind of warnings yet.
You can try the "FoxFi" app with the "FoxFi key" app(this is not a free app) or the "PDANet" app with the "FoxFi Key" app. Purchasing the key unlocks all the features and allows you to hide the fact that you're tethering.

Turn of anti-virus and it might download. Try a different browser when you download it. Use a different device or PC to download it. I downloaded it just fine from Geohot's website so your issue is on your end.

Go to system settings>applications>(chrome or browser), then check it's permissions, make sure it has access to storage or it won't download.

I will check but I downloaded Framaroot off XDA forums, no problem.
I believe I was being blocked by the various free Wi-Fi spots. I walked around my neighborhood and found a no password protected Wi-Fi and downloaded just fine. Sadly, when I tried to install it, I got a pop up that said installation blocked because app would bypass android security. Back to square one.
