Buy one streak and change my galaxy s - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
Can you help me with this question?
I love android and android system.
I have try one HTC g1 one Motorola milestone and finally i work fine with my galaxy.
But in some case i want a screen bigger than the 4 inch of galaxy.
My question is very simple... I don't want one tablet but i want just a smartphone with 5 '' inche and the dell is perfect for me!
But i have read some bad opinion... Can you suggest me if is a good idea change my galaxy s for one dell streak? If the new software version, also some Rom not official, increase the experience may be that i can change my smartphone but actually my galaxy s with a unofficial Rom fly and work fine.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I think most of the bad opinions about the streak have come from people who bought it locked to ATT. They didn't get the 2.2 froyo update right away.
If you buy it unlocked from Dell, you pay a higher price, but you get better support.

I came from a Samsung Galaxy S phone called the Captivate.
Hands down the galaxy S line is dog****.
With 2.2 froyo on Dell streak, there is no lag, working gps and it works as expected flawlessly all the time.
there really is no decision to make.. this will hold me off until the next version of the streak comes out...

Thanks guys
I think that the normal Italian.version is free and not locked... And with your post I thing that if will found a good product... I will change my galaxy.. And i will use a smartphone bigger but always portable!
What is your comments about camera? Work fine?

I recently bought my wife a Galaxy S, so got to play with it a bit. Really like the Super Amoled Screen, a real improvement from Amoled (my previous Samsung Omnia HD).
However, I still prefer and LOVE my Streak, the 4 inch screen looks ways smaller compare to the 5 inch. I love the big screen because I watch a lot of movies on it. By saying that, I did also buy myself a Captivate as my back up phone
If you want a good screen phone but scared of the big screen, why not wait for the Galaxy S2 which has the 4.3 inch screen. But personally 4.3 would still be too small for me.
Streak is a good size not too big at all, easily fit in loose pockets

dear dmax99
your opinion is exactly the same for me: i think that 5'' can be the good size for.a.people.that want work fine with the smartphone and not use the tablet.
i don't know why all the factory produce only 4.3'' as maximum dimension of the screen.
this is the real situation... for example now i can choose.. or buy in April maybe the new galaxy s 2 but with only 4.3'' or try to find one streak but at this moment the streak is not dual core and without tegra... do you know if exist a new.device with this new hardware but with 5'' of display?

[Q] Would you buy a Streak now?

After having and using the Streak for several months, would you buy one today? It's getting to be the time of the year when the carriers/manufacturers start putting out new devices, and with some of the rumored and confirmed Android devices due out this Spring/Summer plus the iPhone 5 this fall, is it worth it to get one now?
It is worth it if you like the formfactor (5") only.. I have had one for an half year, and I still love it, but it's more of an Wifi tablet for the house than a phone now...
GodoPPL
+1
I love the 5" screen ... Would buy one again if this one craps out.
For sure if you want the largest screen phone, there's no others.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
yes, without a doubt.
For 200-350 unlocked it's worth it for the screen size.
It's replaced my iPhone, but it's not perfect.
Screen range of backlight is small , speaker on the back is not that great, camera poor, but for web use the large screen makes it the worthwhile, also had to apply a dpi hack.
Streak + iPad is a great combo.
Yep, for at&t it is still far and above the best android option. The atrix would be cool but a locked bootloader is a red flag for me. I would definitely purchase it again today.
Yes - I would.
Definitely. There is still nothing close to it and its lovely 5" screen - whenever I pick up anyone else's phone now, I just think, OMG that screen is SOOOOOO small!!!
The only thing I'd really like it to have is a physical keyboard - but only sometimes.... somebody make me a case with a nice keyboard built in please
I just did! $99 with new computer purchase from Dell.
well, since the streak came out, att has gotten 4g, though its only hspa+ right now and not lte, the network speed is about to hit the hspa cap. theres now new phones with higher resolution screens, cameras, and performance specs. the atrix with its dual core processor is a very fast phone, but i think what i would buy (if it was lte) is the samsung infuse. itll be a few months before i consider a new phone.
In a heartbeat.

I think I would wait a little longer,to me this device has been a little buggy from day one, besides that the quality of the camera is a little pathetic when it is dark.
The lcd is another reason to buy a diferent device,I really like the 5inch screen and the battery life.I also think the infuse could be my next choice.
I love my streak. I would definitely buy it again.

Yes and yes to streak 2 when it serf ices
Just did.
$49 on contract from AT&T, for my father. Got him updated to FroYo (build 340) and so far he likes it.
The 5" screen is what makes it so nice. I can't imagine going smaller. My next phone will probably be a 5" form factor (or at least 4.5"). 7" will be too big to use as a phone, and I can't justify having two devices when the Streak works so well.
Just too convenient as both a phone and tablet. It really walks the line of usability, and I can't believe so many people comprimise when they can have it all.
I managed to bust my first streak, but luckily (even though i didnt have insurance) i managed to get the screen fixed for only £60.
I use my streak everywhere and i love it. Its big (which is wonderful) but not too big for my pocket, so its the perfect size. the only time i think it is too big is when i get phonecalls: I put it to my head and people think im listening to a bible or something.
I use mine a lot in lectures, hooked up to a bluetooth keyboard, if it was any smaller, I wouldn't be able to use it like that! (Its also great for high quality films in lectures )
I also use mine as a music player. Its playing music for about 3 hours a day, and its perfect.
All in all: its an iphone killer.
Count me in. dont know what I do without my streak
Lol iphone 5.. That'll happen..
Yes.. I will
New here..Like McDonald, I'm Loving It..!!
Love the big screen.. Would love to buy one more for my wife if she can manage it

What does that mean? Apple has released a new iPhone every year since the original 2g iPhone.

Best Alternative To Discontinued Streak?

What is the best option if your streak has an early retirement? I am thinking the Samsung Galaxy Note or the up and coming IBM 5 Inch Tablet. Any ideas for this endangered species? We need to be thinking about this right now or we will have some serious withdrawals when all of our phones die.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA Premium App
......there's only 1 device for every Streak users to upgrade to, and this is the Galaxy Note. There's nothing more to say or anything else in the market to consider beside the Note which is far more superior than our Streak! Problem is the price but it is more affordable now on ebay, 600-680usd.
I finally said goodbye to my beloved Streak 5 and sold it off to a happy new home. It served me well, providing just over one year of joy (not without some pains of course). It's a pity that the device reached 'EOL' so soon. I guess Dell decided that Android tablets were not their strength.
Thanks go to all the talented members on this forum for having helped to make the device such a joy to use despite the challenges.
Although I'm sentimental and was sad to let it go, I can't wait to lay my hands on the Galaxy Note asap! As Final5K stated, the Note is the only device for us ex-Streakers now
Unless something changes, probably going the Note route after the 1st of the year. Hopefully the price will drop just a bit after Christmas, and hopefully someone state side picks it up "officially", although I plan to by a carrier unlocked version.
Everyone? But do you think the Samsung Note is going to be as modible as the streak. I mean it seams like you hack the balls of your streak and then glue them back on. I just hope there is a lot of support and hackable/modible support for the Samsung Note!
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA Premium App
I'd also consider the new galaxy nexus. I know the screen is smaller but it's still a behemoth (hardware- and screensize- wise) with a 4.65'' 720p display.
Regarding the hackability you're better off checking the phones' threads here on xda to get yourself a quick idea of how things are going to evolve. My prediction? the galaxy nexus will be modded, haxxored & supported beyond imagination.
If you think about it, the streak modding community is unfortunately too small. As it has been said over and over many times, the point is not that dj steve, fards and all the other few great guys are not "good enough", but the strength of the hacking/ROM community is in the BIG numbers, and you can bet your house the galaxy nexus will deliver.
Not sure about the galaxy note though. As the streak, its size makes it a niche device, and although sammy is supporting his product way better than dell (at least with proper advertising, clear upgrade schedules etc) i guess the big numbers of the above will not come to the note.
therefore, for my next phone I'm willing to sacrifice a small amount of screen real estate in favor of an incredibly bigger community, with all the benefits/ major geekery that come with it. I'll surely keep an eye on the note though, since it will take a while before I change device. Who knows, I could be proved wrong..
Not so sure about the Note
before reading the comment on the galaxy note's thread, i would've agreed with you about it to be the "after streak" phone.
i was really interested in buying a Note, but now i'm not so sure, because i've read too much comments about screen, gps and bluetooth problems.
i don't know, it looks like a good device, but too many users wrote about the same problems, so i don't know what to do

If you look at the Streak forums here, you will also see many people whining about the Streak. So, unless you are ready to do some compromise, every phone has its flaws. Nearly every forums on the xda have people complaining about problems - there is no exception!
My 1 year old white best buy unlocked Streak is a totally perfect device for me. Yes as with any phone out there it used to have its flaws. And lately the microphone does perform too good.
I am a huge reader, reading absolutely everywhere and everytime. Actually I was reading when I realized I wanted to check xda a couple of minutes ago. And yes, it is my Dell Streak that I read on. For me it's almost flawless.
But I made up my mind to try something else. I used to have one of the very 1st iphones out there. And I believe I was one of the first users out there who threw up on it and sold it because of its...hm...I'd say incomplexity. I used to own all the best symbian devices as well including the monster e61, beautiful e71, gargantuan n97 and mysterious Maemo based n900 (the fastest texting ever!!!). I tried blackberry as well. Now it seems with my Streak bot being able to deliver the clear voice experience I'm going to try something new. Like good old Dell Venue Pro, windows phone. Surely it's going to be some kind of downgrade, but I'd still want to try some new experience, especially sweet for 179$ on outlet. We'll see. And if I don't like it, my choice is going to be either the colossal note or sgs 3 ehich might come up soon. Last week I had to use dad's iphone 4s for 1 day. I could not hold it in my hand. It was too small. It was too freaking small. And the screen was annoyingly small as well!!!!!!!! Truly cannot understand small screeners these days.
P.s. just wanted to add (right, tastes differ) that Dell Streak is one off the best looking devices for me. And not only for me. Several friends of mine told me it's an absolutelly stunning and clean design.
P.p.s. Go, Dell. You used to be the biggest guy in the hood. Now you have to be the smartest.

It would be very interesting if Dell went ahead and released the Opus One after Christmas - bearing in mind the weird screen hue of the Samsung Galaxy Note, I'd like to see what Dell could do as a Streak 5 successor...
Cheers
Brian
Lenovo released it for them, they called it the LePad S2005, it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect the "opus one" to be.
Most of ex-streakers/early adopters of the Streak have sworn never to buy any phone from Dell due to the number of problems they've encountered and deceptions about support.
It is really surprising that people still want to buy/longing for Dell phones after they've let the streak down and not releasing a GB rom for so long!
I love my white Super Streak, but I'm definitely going to get the Samsung Note. It was announced today that AT&T will be getting the Samsung Note 4G version in 2012. One of the AT& T store reps told me that it will probably be sometime in the first quarter, after the CES conference. Check out the following articles:

+1. Dell couldn't care less about their customers.
Imo the Galaxy Nexus is definatly worth considering
With a 4.65" screen (0.35" smaller than the streaks) I doubt you would notice the difference (I didn't)
Having guarantee updates and developer base would be quite refreshing
The Galaxy Note is an impressive device, but for that price..

Well the 4.65 is smaller than the 5" from the Streak. I've noticed a big difference when using these smaller screen devices. Thing is the first few hours will make you miss the large screen of the Streak, but past 1 day, you'll get adjusted to the smaller screen. Still, there is nothing comparable to the 5.3 inch of the Note --> saved money people and get the Note instead - it's definitely worth the investment.
Finally got my SG Note 2 days ago, and I can see now how badly Dell messed up with the Streak. I realise now in retrospect how many compromises I was forced to accept in comparison to the Note. Anyway, we did not have much of a choice due to screen size, so I have no regrets tho. Thank you Sammy for bringing us an alternative ....and what an alternative! indeed! Honestly, the Note rocks and my Streak experience is fast becoming a distant memory...
This sucks. I have an AWS streak on tmobile it took a long time to find one after I found out they were even made. Now its been a year and I want something fresh and new but I have no good options for tmobile. Switching carriers is not an option I have to nice/cheap of a grandfathered plan. The new nexus might be nice but I just got my wife a galaxy s2 and even 4.5" seems to small so 4.6 is not going to cut it. So what is there for me? I search at least once a week for the next 5"+ phone. I would buy the note but no 3g =no good. So anyone know of any other large phones coming soon for tmobile bands?

I got gs2 as a replacement for the dell steak after I got fed up with the lagging and the buggy build by Dell for O2
And I can confirm the screen size is really matter, 4.5 is small Vs Dell steak
So diffenetly I am going for the Note. But its very expensive in the Uk

Samsung
Again samsung, if you are wanting maybe a bit of a smaller screen but still big and want a really powerful device and yet stable custom roms and a bigger community (personaly again as the streak did I don't think the note will have a big audience) I have gone for the Samsung Galaxy S II as this is one of the most popular phones, I went to a friends party to day and three people had the same phone as me. (I found out as we videoed a friend taking of in a heli of our friends front lawn!)
I think that if you go down that route you will have much more of a wider range of roms and a bigger community to help when things go wrong
Plus the bigger the device the more prone to damage!
Hope this helps and would love replies

[Q] Apart from the Galaxy Note, what will you get to replace the Streak?

Hi everyone,
Since the Opus One never materialised, and the Streak is getting quite old in the tooth inside, what have you been thinking of as a replacement? The Galaxy Note seems to be having a lot more success than the Streak ever did, but it's a bit too far outside of my price range as a replacement and I now have an ASUS Transformer so I don't need a Tabphone any more.
Watching a video of the official ICS upgrade for the Nexus S was the final straw for me for some reason with my Streak. I've had it on unofficial ROMs since I got it, but none of them ever made it feel like a non-beta device. I still suffer from random reboots and Dell logos of death when I'm using the Streak, mainly at times when I need a phone the most, so I'm really up for getting a replacement.
Since I'm on a limited budget and on PAYG (GiffGaff FTW) I've been eyeing up a used Nexus S or HTC Desire Z on eBay to tide me over until something better comes out that I can afford. So, apart from the Note/Galaxy S II/Galaxy Nexus, what are you thinking of?
Well since I've heard rumors that Dell is making a "Dell Streak 2" (An update to Dell Streak 5) I think I might be going with that if it's true.
But I'm sticking with Dell Streak till the end.
With the 2.3.3 update the device reached from the level Bad-Ass to Mega B0$$ (With the $'s)

I'm thinking of the Skyrocket from AT&T, but will probably hold out for a quadcore device. The Kal-el chip looks like it rocks! If the rumors hold out true for the Galaxy S3 (quadcore Exynos, 2GB RAM, 12MP camera, 1280x720 screen), it sounds like it would be the one to beat...we'll see what happens in the next few months.
.... HTC Sensation XL !

Note users was it worth upgrading from T989

Hi, I really want this phone but I can't seem to bring myself to pay the extra money to upgrade from GS2 T989. Convince me into why you think it was worth the switch from your GS2 to the note.

convince me if the HD screen is worth it I guess... I'm all about having the best screen, but is it worth selling my GS2 for about 425 and buying a used note for around 550?

I was debating on the three phones for my upgrade, getting the Note, the Skyrocket, or the GSII. I was a little hesitant getting the Note, when the Skyrocket is close to specs, but I am definitely glad that I did.
I love the size of it, and the GPS lock (huge thing for me), is insanely fast. Usually within 2 seconds, sometimes up to 4 seconds.
Amazing phone, I am so glad I got this.
defiantly worth it...my wife has my s2 now....i love this phone and when playing with a ipod or other phones i couldnt believe the difference, they look so tiny,,,but trust me after a week you'll get use it and love it....
I'm already used to large phone screens from owning the Dell steak 5...I haven't seen a note in person so maybe I should do that lol. I can't imagine what the notes resolution with SAMOLED looks like. It has 3x the amount of pixels as the GS2. Do you guys have lines or blobs like the GS2 has been known for having?

My screen is perfect.
If you go into the development area for the phone, and add the tweaks for the build.prop, the screen quality gets even clearer. JPG files are insanely clear on my phone now.
I recently set up an iPhone 4 for a camera install, and I could not believe how small it felt, even with a case on it. I am so glad I opted for this instead of the S3, whenever that comes out. I love the screen and the size.
Thanks for the replies, I'm obsessed with beautiful large screens, so I think will keep looking to buy one on Ebay till I see a like new one for about 500. I can't wait to join the "Note" community lol

SGS2 and skyrocket and galaxy nexus are the bestest of best phone out there,
But Galaxy Note is like their elder brother.
Everything feels way better in bigger and better screen, hd and now there is no way to go back to small one or change to Note 2 when come out.
Most ppl here including me were excited to get it but lil scared of size initially. But I can 100% assure you once you use it, its very comfortable easy light weight HD screen and design, and you won't regret even a sec of it.
You will wonder yourself how did you managed yourself on those small screens b4.

Hey,
I've come from the s2 international... And there have been trade offs...
The s2 was a great phone for me. It ran well... Really really well.
Moving to the note, the screen is definitely awesome, hands down, but what I have noticed is the way things render on the screen, mainly in websites, isn't always that smooth, and can be choppy, even with the phone overclocked and custom ROM.
Now I'm not sure if it I'd just my phone, or if its the way the north American chip sets version runs, but it does seem a little different for me, but nothing terrible. Its really hardly notable.
I wouldn't go back to the s2, just cause I love this screen. But I would love to have an international version to try to see if the difference is not just in my head.
I Know someone here is going to call me a moron by some rights, but that's my experience with the note.

And yes that's truth Note is very laggy comparing international SGS2, as I used same.
But this is just for temporary till ICS comes out.
Few for now available Custom Roms and third party launchers , dolphin and other browsers on stock still helps and makes Note runs smoother.
I will say that Note offers everything of SGS2 and galaxy nexus in bigger hd screen.

Android phone for a lady ?

Hi my girlfriend has birthday next month and she was talking latelly thank she'd like to have a smartphone because she'd love to surf internet on the go, listen to music ( she's using some old mp3 player atm ), check e-mail etc.
She's been using a classic candy bar phones for years and I was thinink that as her bday is comming I could get smartphone for her as a gift.
But I'm not really sure which model would suit a total newbie in the smartphone world ? She's never used a touch screen phone, she only played littlebit with mine Nexus 7.
I use HTC HD7 personally and it comes with Windows Phone 7 but i thought Android would be better for her because of more apps, etc.
Is there anything you could recommend ?
Battery life longer than 20h would be great ( mine HD7 last like 26-28h )
Thanks !
White Galaxy s II or III depends on your budget .
the smooth interface and lightweight design make these some of the best performing phones right out of the box to date battery life depends on usage but you can ussually get bout 16+ hours of normal use which is very good for android+ the large display. If it were me definetly the galaxy s III

How about something smaller ?
I think 4+ inch will be too big for her hands.
Mine HD7 is sometimes too big for me and my hands are bigger.

Any more models you could think of ? I'd like to have a bigger spectrum of choices.
Samsung Captivate (4', a lot of support from community), Motorola Atrix 4G or Atrix 2 (4', Tegra II or OMAP dual core), SE Mini ST15 (3')

Sense really is a great addition to android, especially for non-techies but if you get the one S be sure to get the snapdragon 4 variant not the the s3 variant.
From my experience , ladies that are generally not geeky prefer something that fits their hands, like some 3.7-4" htc. And on top of that if its pink... well, lets just say she'll be more than glad
I recently suggested htc wildfire to a friend of mine who never had android before. Shes now a successful convert to our beloved OS
Yup I've decided to go for Samsung Galaxy Mini 2.
Unfortunatelly resolution isn't the greatest but it's is a really nice little device. She had old nokia anyway so for her that resolution is going to be a huge step forward anyway.
Perfect size, nice and round edges and it's really good looking and it wasn's super expensive either. She'll be happy with it I'm sure.
Thank you guys for all sugestions !
I gave to my girlfriend an HTC Cha Cha. And she is not really happy...
My wife got as a present a white wildfire S.
She was really happy using it
Until our son broke the (gorilla) screen

Just gave my girlfriend a Nexus 7. She was using an iPad 2 before it broke. I was nervous about her moving from iOS to JB, but she's adapted nicely. She prefers it significantly to the iPad (which she was crazy about).

My girlfriend has a Galaxy S (the original one) and she loves it. The fact that it's running Android meant she was able to turn the home screen and app drawer into a hideous mess of pink and sparkles...
I'd recommend skipping that for the S2 though. Absolutely AMAZING smartphone, near perfection, and you get ICS on it now so it's faster and more functional. I'd skip the Galaxy 'Ace' range as most people I know who have one struggle with it due to it being a little bit too underpowered for what it's trying to run.

Haha that happened to my girlfriends Iphone after i jailbroke it and taught her how to theme it. The next day she shows me her phone and its all baby blue and pink all over the place. I keep telling her all the theming stuff is easier on android but girls tend to like the iphone because it is more of a fashion accessory and dont tend to care too much about what their phone can do.
Well in some ways iPhone can do more though, there's way more on the app store, you just have less control over the fundamentals.
She bought an Xperia U today. Pink on the inside AND outside, even got the light to go pink, lol

Try HTC Rhyme, it little bit outdated but very feminist look.
