I don't know if the subject was already discussed, but I never saw anything about that.
So, as we are a lucky to own a device with a removing keyboard, I thought we could plug something else like a real pad and some buttons to make our device looks and feels like a real portable console. Take a look at the pic, though it is just a draft.
I think we could get the pad and the buttons from a real little joystick (there's plenty of them for diferent consoles), mount them on the Athena and join them with micro wires to the 8 pins used to connect the keyboard.
We would need informations about how the keyboard work with the main unit.
This is just an idea but I think it could be a really good one. I'm not a good homemade genius nor an amator, though, if you are interested, we could maybe work together on this project.
The cursor pad does exactly what the Athens' own joystick does. You can skip that.

Hello,
I noticed that the stick on the Athena's can't do up-right,up-left,down-right nor down-left. At first look and first use I thought the stick was well designed, but finaly this issue prevents playing most games. If people here can use the stick to do diagonal axis, please let me know.
Aynway, the main idea was to make the Athena looks and feels like a real portable console. Game buttons really lake for this purpose and the ones available just suck. The feel is not good and they are not well set.
Also I'm not talking about piercing holes in the athena but finding a way to fix a pad+buttons set on the surface of the machine.

When u say fix a pad+buttons set on the surface do you sorta like using a silicon skin over the device with the buttons built in on it and using either fiber optic wires or some kind of thin ribbon cable going back to the keyboard pads and all the necessary cutouts already in place on the skin so you can still access all the stuff (ie. reset, battery area, external gps conectors etc. etc...) Or was I way over my head on this one?

Well, there are many ways to bind a system like that on the device without damaging it and by keeping access to the functions you mentioned. I haven't thought about that yet because I think the 1st thing to figure out is how the Athena deals with the keyboard using the pins. Has anyone ever seen informations about that ?
A very good & interesting idea , in my opinion add more buttons is always better as u have more choices to activate these buttons if otherways failed to do so , and i don't think it will take up space in the ram / rom , anyway Htc should look into this page , always more buttons , more better i say

i was wondering if there was any way that the ASUS transformer keyboard can be hacked with the gtab dock adapter? I dont im alone in this, or if not that do you think there will be some third party who would make one? I think the sale on woot and now amazon might help push manufactures to make it.
Its very less likely that the keyboard would work due to the proprietary connector.
That said, a blutooth keyboard with a 10" enclosure should work no problem, and I see many manufacturer going into this once the transformer style become popular.
There is nothing unique about the eee keyboard the convertible style keyboard was already available for IPAD2 long before any one knew about the EEE.

unfortunately not that slick, you currently can go with the clip cases with USB or BT keyboards, they are very campy compared to this (well at least the USB version doesn't cost that much).
That said, I think with the huge recent surge in GTab owners, I don't think it would be that before some go on and make a professionally looking case like the ones quoted above (esp if the EEE transformer goes popular)
Crossing my fingers to that! I've spent a lot of time looking at everything that is currently available for our G tabs, and nothing seems "professional"; instead it all looks slapped together. Engadget has been posting a few articles about the G tab and with the lower price and the over clocking kernels....
Here me hoping that some third party shines some light back in Viewsonic's direction.

Id revise this to Don't get it if its your ONLY case. I actualy like using mine with Evernote for coursework. When I dont need the keyboad, I use another case.

Thoughts on Keyboard Folio
The main problem for Android for me has been typing. I've spent hours getting used to swipe technology because I hate softkey keyboards, then came along this little keyboard folio.
At first I regretted buying it. I spent $90+ to get it, and as soon as it showed up I was unhappy. But then I started using it. The way that the tablet itself is not connected to the keyboard is a little bit awkward. You only can place the tablet at 3 viewing angles which vary by only a few degrees, rendering them almost useless. The folio case also takes up the full size USB slot, which was one of the best features of it imo. Also, the way it slides in and out of the slot does not seem like it would stand up against a lot of use.
That being said, getting this case literally redefined how I use my device. UX is now no longer a problem at all. The keys are individual, and spaced at a perfect distance so typing on it comes very naturally. Instead of a tablet, it seems like I have an android netbook now. I am a web designer/developer by trade. Using the tablet by itself is perfect for designing, the adobe touch apps are great, however I was never able to code due to the lack of a keyboard. This folio has changed that.
I recognize that half of my excitement over the folio is just the fact that I am using a keyboard with an android device, and that can be achieved simply by plugging in a regular USB keyboard into it, however after a little use, I rarely take the tablet out of the folio unless I am designing.
I like the keyboard. But I have in my bag and use it when I need heavy typing. Very impressed with the quality of it, there is some issues however, if you don't use the native english version. Then you'r at times stuck, with ENG layout, which can be rather annoying.
I find mine indespensible. If I'm not mistaken, it's the fastest for coding in Android from powerup to first keystroke, even on pokey stock ROM. The speed of getting hooked up with BT isn't something I like. The battery drain is a hassle for me, too. Granted, I use it mostly for typing rather useless stuff like this, but I really like it. It's a one-of-a-kind at the moment.
Yes, it's about 1.25 inches (33mm) thick, not counting the magnetic flap closure. The TPT in my Sikai case is 15/16 of an inch (23mm), but it doesn't seem like it thanks to its design. They could have worked a little harder on either the aesthetic or the actual depth. It's definitely not slick looking, but its a great workhorse. For criminy, it's Lenovo. What do you expect?
I think it's a transitional gadget, perhaps ahead of its time. They will get thinner. We will be jealous. We'll get the fourth gen and be smug for a month or two. But for now, we have the only one.
I just got my tablet yesterday, but so far I really like the keyboard folio. I do a lot of posting on various forums as well as document editing for clients. My only complaint with the folio is with the trackpoint. I was hoping it would be a traditional trackpoint. I find myself having to get used to rubbing my finger over the trackpoint instead of just pushing it in the direction I want the mouse to go. However as I use it more and more, I will get used to it.
In the realm of what I really want is a backlit keyboard. I would prefer if it was kind of like the Asus keyboard dock in that it offered additional battery life when in use. That beings said this is a rev 1 product and I am sure in the future things will improve. As it stands now I am about 90% satisfied with it the way it is.
Regarding the tablet in general I wasn't too sure about moving to a 10' device over my Nook tablet, but last night I read a book on it just fine when it was out of the folio, and difference in weight didn't bother me one bit. I love this thing.

I also bought the keyboard folio and it makes the TPT heavier and thicker. It would only fit(snug) on my 11 inch sleeve case.
I like to use the keyboard folio when I am replying to emails, but it drains the TPT battery faster so I always have it plugged in to a power source.
And the magnets are very strong (compass apks will be useless)
Function keys
Has anyone found a solution to using the Fx keys? (F1-F12) I need them to use some work apps in Citrix. Besides that this keyboard is awesome.
Great for travel
I use mine quite a bit for travel when I don't want to bring a laptop and a tablet. This gives me just enough laptop functionality on the go and tablet when I need it.
Bummer, I wish I'd seen this thread before I ordered my keyboard today. It was on sale on the Australian Lenovo site for AUD$60, reduced from $90 and freight was free. I have a 10" netbook which I have just upgraded with a Vertex SSD but I prefer not to cart it about everywhere with me as it needs to go in my motorcycle backpack. It seems like they will be about the same size in the end. Sigh..
I can't really complain though, I picked up the 16Gb ThinkPad on a 1 hour sale for AUD$249 so in the end it's a pretty cheap solution for an iPad killing android tab, especially now I've upgraded it to ICS which I much prefer over Honeycomb.
All I'm waiting now is for a rooting solution for ICS on this pad, that will be brilliant.
If anyone has one of these they want to sell, i'll take it for a good price.

I received mine. It's not too bad and protects my tab in my backpack.
I don't use it at home unless I am using a citrix client in a window where I am unable to use the native ICS keyboard.

Hmm, no. It could be done, but you'd be physically modifying each key yourself and adding your own LED's and everything, I don't think another keypad would fit right. And then your battery consumption would go through the roof, you'd likely want to increase the size of the battery in the keyboard.
There's not going to be a simple way to do it, and I'm afraid none of these ASUS devices are going to get popular enough to warrant a ton of third-party support and products, not for ones like that anyway.
i actually thought of this a while ago and took my keyboard apart. It does not connect like your laptop keyboard for easy removal (that i remember) and there is VERY little space in there to work with. Overall i think it would be more work than its worth.
You would have to find a keyboard with transparent keys, or find a way to make your keys transparent if you want the letters to glow. This is hard because the keyboard is like, 80% or something of a regular keyboard.
If you just want a glow between the keys this might be a little easier, you would still have to find a way to route power to LED's and find room to place them under the leys which, honestly, do not travel very far meaning you need very small LED's
There ARE small enough LEDs (the size of like, a large grain of sand? not sure how to explain it) and you technically COULD solder those to the ribbon wires (like what connects the screen to the mobo in the prime), supplying power, then route the ribbon around where the keys are, connect to a switch which you route to the outside of the dock and connect to power and BAM you have a backlight keyboard!
But honestly, thats a lot of work and you would have to fabricate everything yourself.

Mmmmh by the way probably with "edge led" lighting and semi-trasparent keyboard I can at least turn my prime keyboard to a littler visible in the dark....
In a LOT easy way i can put on all key a reflective or luminescent paint, and probably light form the screen is enough to make keyboard visible....

But btw I suggested an idea to mod the keyboard and put bigger batteries or larger capacity, and maybe mod the backplate of the keyboard aswell in order to fit the possible larger batteries.
It shouldn't be a difficult operation I believe and imagine the battery life increase if its a success

X2 on this. The prime is beautiful and super thin, but I would have no problem if it was thicker with even more battery.
One of the biggest advantages (other than the ridiculous battery life) would be that it would make the dock and all much more bottom heavy.
Edit: Does anyone know if it would be possible to buy the Transformer Prime or Original Transformer dock batteries. IIRC the OG Transformer had a 3300mAh battery. I wonder if it could be wired into the original battery and then a spacer installed.

Im planning on opening mine at some point not right now because I am still testing ths unit and may have to return it.
But it doesnt 'feel' like its a difficult operation. Just find bigger batteries, change them, modifiy the plate beneath to fit the new space which should need to be too big but what the hey the bigger the better, more battery life (ALOT MORE) and finally some weight to the bottom to have it easier in your lap or wherever.
We have to keep discussing about it and finding out what sort batteries are used right now in the dock, dimensions and so on.
I believe its an awesome idea!

When you open it be VERY, and i do mean VERY carefull, the tabs on the side of the dock break very easially and, as a result, will cause it not to hold closed as well.
Also, under the latching mech there are a few screws, hidden by the stickers that act as padding. again, carefull as you remove this because you dont want to deform the sticky padding nor do you want to lose screws.
Also make sure to take lots of pictures!
Oh, and +1 for the glow in the dark keyboard stickers! pwnt!
This would be an awesome mod. If you go through with it and succeed, would love to see pictures, and a guide on how to do it, if possible. Not sure I'd be willing to try it on mine if it's too complex. If it's the glow in the dark paint though, as opposed to the leds, it might not be that bad.
Personally, if it were an issue for me (which it isn't!), I'd buy a USB keyboard light such as this:

Thanks for the advice, I will most likely start doing this next month as I may change to the T700 but the keyboard is just the same I believe right?
The only major differences between the Prime and the Infinity is the 1080p screen and that the CPU will be 1.6 Ghz
My Prime is defect and I the shop from which I purchased it are not taking in any more of them and so I came to an agreement that I will get the T700 instead and just pay the difference.
But im thinking about maybe buying a second keyboard just for experimental purposes.
I think if we all could put our heads together we could create a very cool mod
I would have 'dissected' my Dock right now if I wasn't going to return it.
We'll discuss more about this, I dont see why it should be hard, and yes I shall take a ton of pictures.

Hehe that's cool but I think it enough with some high quality stickers, maybe even just the material that you cut into the the shape of the keyboard strokes and place them, tha would be even easier but also the battery thing would be the truly cool thing to do if its a success of course.

I have something similar for my laptop and I hate it. It casts shadows across the keys and doesn't illuminate everything uniformly. Not to mention, it's an eye sore.
I'd love for some to come out with a very thin line of lights that would sit at the top of the keyboard beaming directed light towards the keys (in your direction), but so directed that it doesn't go straight into your eye. It would be low profile and sit just behind the keyboard, under the monitor.
I still think stickers are the better option, but I personally wouldn't invest until there was a cool font in the right color (blue!).

Is this confirmed that the keyboard will be the same? I've heard contradicting info on that. I'd make certain that this keyboard will be compatible with the 700 before you start tinkering with it.

nobody knows for sure, there is some speculation that the dock will be slightly different, the 700 may be slightly thicker, but nobody knows for sure.

wire is too thick / not enough space.
I have a 700, the prime is SLIGHTLY different (curved edges, 700 is more angular) tho they both fit in the same dock, you just gotta work it a little to get the 700 in properly.
Internally the dock is the same for the infinity and the prime.
Would love to see a mod with an extra battery. Here's a video on a tear down.

One of the devices that was tested was a Note, and it performed flawlessly. I backed the project, and will give my review once I get it. Really looking forward to it - works on both desk/countertops as well as in your car.
Be careful when adjusting it, could really bend or break your ports. Otherwise it looks like a cool product. Could see it being great in the car.

For sure. It looks like they made a nice, fat base for the mini USB connector to rest on. Hopefully it will support a good deal of weight. Supposedly it will even hold it in landscape, which I am cautiously optimistic about.
That does look pretty cool. As the others have said, the microusb port is such a shallow port, it may not provide a lot of support if any when adjusting, or if set at an angle of any sorts. Be curious to hear your review when you get it!
Im not impressed. Micro USB ports arent designed to hold weight.

I watched the videos, I dont see where your getting the idea that the base holds the weight. They only show a glimpse of the iphone connector in one of the videos and it doesn't look any different from my ipad2 cable.
I would love to see a Note held horizontally via USB. Its one thing to position an iphone in every position since the port is 100x more secure and locks to an extent.
This has no base. Your USB port will support the entire wieght of the phone. Won't be long before USB port is loose and ceases to function.
By 'base', I mean 'connector plug'. The USB port is on a large plug which distributes the weight across a larger area than if your phone sat on just the cable end. Still, small port, certainly not made to be jostled around on. I bought mine for my desk, so should be fine. Again, more details when I get the thing.

From what I'm seeing that would only be true if the phone were completely balanced at a 90 degree angle otherwise much of the weight is actually distributed as shear stress against the inside of the micro USB plug which is not good.it needs some kind of backplate to cradle with.

I've asked Jon Fawcett, creator of Une Bobine, to drop by this thread and comment on concerns. I think they are all valid.
Hey all. Meatlocker sent me an email to address your concerns. I'll give some info here, but please feel free to ask more questions of me.
We made 2 substantial changes to the standard details around the micro connector that are intended to resolve the issues with all of the weight on the connector. First, our connector housing for the micro is about the same width as a standard iphone cable. The extra width spreads the weight of the phone to a greater area, which places less weight on the connector itself. Also, if the phone is tilted slightly, the phone body will hit the connector housing and stop the phone from putting additional sideways strain on the connector.
The second thing we did was to make replaceable caps on the housing end. These caps adjust the space between the connector body and the tip of the connector. This essentially adjusts how far out the connector comes. These allow us to reduce or remove the gap between our housing and the body of the phone so that the 2 items listed above are as good as possible. We have 3 caps designed to adjust this spacing to keep the phone tight in position. We also have one cap with a right angle bracket to assist with some side-port phones. And we have another cap that leaves a small portion of the traditional micro end sticking out that will let it fit into cases. Each device comes with all 5 caps.
Of course, these won't solve every phone and every usage. But we have tested with 30 different androids, windows, bb's, and feature phones and these have made the difference for most of them. Also, we don't recommend adjusting the position of the phone while it is connected to the cable except for small amounts to get it to the exact right position.

And we have another cap that leaves a small portion of the traditional micro end sticking out that will let it fit into cases. Each device comes with all 5 caps.
Of course, these won't solve every phone and every usage. But we have tested with 30 different androids, windows, bb's, and feature phones and these have made the difference for most of them. Also, we don't recommend adjusting the position of the phone while it is connected to the cable except for small amounts to get it to the exact right position.

Looks cool...but I don't trust it.
I know the Note doesn't weight a ton, but it seems a little top heavy/big to be comfortably used with this thing.
Hmmm...maybe they could come out with something that'll attach to the USB port and allow the phone to be rested on or something to prevent all the weight from being on the phones port?

This is a cool idea, and I like that the maker takes time to come and talk. I understand what he means that the weight is on the plug and the base and it seems like it would work fine under ideal use, but my concern is that I would smack it, hit it, knock it over, something that would cause far more then normal amount of weight on the plug. Im glad to see some innovation though, I may give it a whirl, we'll see.
Managed to get my hands on 2 of these and they are great - if you have a smaller phone. I have no problems with HTC wildfire s or Sony Xperia Ray. When it comes to the rather large Samsung gs3 it is a different story. I have to lean the phone forward to get it to charge and this defeats the purpose of the bobine. Also in portrait mode it doesn't charge just rest against the connector casing.
Great idea for small phones! Just hope they can get a solution for larger devices as the concept is great!
