Help installing custom ROM - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to install axura custom ROM. So I copied it to the sdcard and then I rebooted to recovery. Everytime I choose "reisntall package" this what shows up :
i51.tinypic.com/212fpfa.jpg

you need to download rom manager and flash clockwork recovery first. You do not install rom's from the stock recovery. Read the noob guide if you have not already.
if you do have CWR, go to install from zip from sdcard and choose zip.

yes, I installed that already and chose Samsung vibrant after that i rebooted to recovery and that's what happened.

anyone who knows what the problem is?? been fixing it for a day.. but still can't make it work.

Ran into some crazy issues when rooting/custom flashing a friend's vibrant from stock 2.2. I ended up using ODIN back to 2.1 and then rooting and flashing a custom rom. The file system on 2.2 is different and CWM doesn't like it right away.
Also, that 3e recovery is a ****.

Lots of work, but worth it. Please read up on other options too.
Good luck

ok.. so all this means... flashing ack to 2.1.. using odin.. then install custom ROM?

Essentially, yeah. Here's an OP that I just stumbled across. It should step you through it. I wish I had seen this when I was fumbling with errors messages like that on my friend's phone.
EDIT: This is a non-ODIN solution:

Yeah, I had the same problem with my friend's phone. After you go back to stock, you can use z4root to apply a temporary root and then install CWR. Kind of a pain, but it gets the job done.

[Q] Problems Flashing ShadowRom Onto Eris (missing file)

Hey all.
I've been trying to flash ShadowROM onto my eris (got the eris dl off their site), but everytime I try to flash it on it gives me "E:missing file: recovery/recovery-from-boot.p" and "E:Verification failed" and then aborts the installation.
So I then tried re-downloading the rom, but the same thing happened again.
Any ideas on what might be going on? I did all my wipes and everything so I'm not really sure what could be going on. Also I have been using Evil Eris for a while, if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
EDIT: Also I'm currently on 2.1 so I'm not sure if theres anything I need to do to be able to put a 2.2 rom on my eris.

At this time it doesn't work with Amon's recovery. It only will work if you use clockwork, which isn't recommended. I got it to work but I use a rom kitchen and replaced the boot-img.

You don't need to replace the boot.img....the rom just needs to be signed and it will flash fine amon's. Clockwork can load an unsigned rom but amons can't....

**please ignore, sorry!**
Clockwork wont hurt your phone. Also when you go into to clockwork and flash clockwork recovery it will only temp use clockwork as a recovery just to install the rom. After that it will boot into amon.
"Clockwork won't hurt your phone" Boyyyyyyyyy I bet a lot of people with broken eris's would be glad to hear that!

He means that this rom will not work with amons recovery because it isn't signed. You can create a zip that isn't sign, meaning you never used a program that signs zips, but you can't flash a zip in amons unless it is signed. So if you just create a zip it probably won't work, but if you use an autosigner then you will be in buisness. I hope this helps, probably not because I have been drinking.
Just so there's full information in case someone finds this thread in the future.
There was a bug with using Clockwork Mod Recovery with the Eris. They squashed it, at least 2-3 months ago.
Besides, you don't have to get rid of amon in order to use clockwork. Just download ROM Manager from the Market and it will make it so that you can load clockwork from amon. Then you get all the advantages of ROM Manager and clockwork without any hassles.

This seems to be a hit or miss build for the Eris. About 50% (guestimated) of Eris users are unable to boot with v0.2.x and there is no known reason why, even after viewing logcats.
I have dropped the entire desirec device configuration (a mix of kaos & conap) and have forked over a pure conap device config for v0.3.x to attempt to fix this issue. We won't know for sure until v0.3.0 finally releases to the masses. All my testers (even myself) are able to run v0.2.x just fine.
There is no ETA for v0.3.0 at this time.
I'm sorry if this is off topic but I need to ask. Were can you get themes for ShadowRom? Do you just use anything that is for cynogen? Is it best to use metamorph or and update.zip?

We currently have zero themes for the eris. We rely on themers to provide ports, which none have done yet.

As far as I know DoW is a kernal not a rom. Make sure it will work with whatever your current rom is. Working great flashed over nero5.
I would odin back to stock, flash custom froyo rom then kernal....
By chance did you have lag fix disabled?......works fine with nero 4.1 and 5 for me.....but I found nerov5 works great without it

Also remember that not all phones will handle the oc'd kernels
if you can get into recovery, you can try flashing a different kernel or reflashing your rom.
I'm currently running Bionix oc/uv and love it.
I DID undo the lagfix before flashing this.
If I could get a link to the stock odin files to flash so I could give the amazing sounding DoW a shot, I'm sure I could get it working.
Im running DoW 1.3 on AxuraJL5, and it does the same thing. i often have to pull the battery for a successful reboot. its sucks, but ive learned to live with it

have you tried getting it into download mode? i know you said you cant get into recov. but download mode is different.
first, do you know how to get into download mode?
well in short if you dont, when ur phone hangs.. pull the battery. with the bat. out hook it up to ur comp with odin running... as ur holding down the vol. up and down buttons stick in the batt. then you will be in download mode. then flash back to JFD
Maybe im wrong but isn't the dow kernel for 2.2. Didn't he say he was on bionix and isn't that a 2.1?

you are correct, i missed that he stated he was using bionix. OP there is your problem, you flash a 2.2 kernel with a 2.1 rom. flash back to stock via my instructions and you willl be fine.

after you flash back to stock you of course are going to want to root your phone again, then youre going to want to go to team whiskey and download Nero... a 2.2 rom that works with the kernel. then you will want to flash DoW. I would also consider downloading setcpu because that kernel will drain the heck out of your bat. make sure you dont set to boot with setcpu, and just use the conservative setting.
team whiskey http://teamwhiskey.com/DownVibrant.html
again make sure its a 2.2 rom.
DoW works with any Nero (2.2) Team Whiskey Rom. You have to disable Vodoo LF before flashing, otherwise you will get stuck in a boot loop. Make sure to let the Rom run for a few minutes after flashing before replacing the kernal. You can always pull a logcat to see what your phone is doing when it hangs.

Very fist, I wanna say thanks a million to all the replies and help. :-D
Ok...now...to set the record straight, my phone just tries to boot to the DoW and does nothing after. It just hangs.
Yes. I was running a 2.1 rom (Bionix) with a 1.2ghz oc, the uv kernal and the voodoo lagfix (which WAS DISABLED before flashing) but I thought I did everything right. If I had known that switching from a 2.1 rom to a 2.2 rom would have been this much more involved than I thought, I might have reconsidered...lol
I did a Nandroid backup using clockworkmod prior to doing anything else. I got to the red recovery (not 100% sure how I did it, to be honest) and tried to flash my backup and it didn't work.
I'm going to try the previous post about flashing back to stock, then doing the DoW flash but that's kind of a last resort. I'd like to not wipe my data, nandroid, etc before flashing but it's kinda whatever at this point since my phone doesn't work at all right now...lol
Thanks once again all of you!!! This is what makes Android what it is.

Bootloop, cannot find my files in recovery...

Was running Trigger with TW's voodoo recovery, tried flashing Eugene's new kernal.
I disabled voodoo, installed the kernal, rebooted. Boot loop.
So I figured, no big deal, right? Wipe, toss on an old stable ROM. CWM is cyan again and won't get into the "choose zip from sd" mode.
...uhhh... anyone have any ideas? Do I need to ODIN?

OK, so just yesterday, I realized that for some reason, I cannot play any videos on my Vibrant. This includes both videos I have put on my phone as well as those I have taken with my camera.
I am running Bionix 1.3 ROM. I searched but didn't find anything. I have not had this issue before. Any help is appreciated.
Reflash,I suggest odin to stock and reflash or try just flashing the new vrs of the overstock kernal.

This happens no matter what if you haven't rebooted in a while. My buddy on his completely stock KA6 was complaining about it all the time, just reboot at least once a day and you will be fine. If this is the route you want to take (I highly recommend it as well), I would check out this thread or even this thread (although it is on Android Central, so you will need to make an account to see all the links if you don't already have one). They are pretty similar (the latter is a bit overboard on detail, but that can be a good thing if you are new to the process) and should at least get you started on learning what it is you need to learn to ultimately wind up at ComRom 2.1. I hope this helps!

Evil Fascination and Community Rom are two different roms and both will root your phone when flashed... this is how mine's set up for ComRom and it works flawlessly:
1) download odin, samsung mobile phone drivers, debloated/debinged/deodexed EB01 all in one package, CWR3-Voodoo, and ComRom 2.0 package of your choice and the 2.1 patch... place ComRom and its patch onto your sd card
2) use odin to install EB01
3) boot up phone once to let it format itself
4) power off phone and use odin to then install CWR3-Voodoo
5) boot straight into CWR, wipe data/cache/dalvik 3 times each and assuming you don't want to backup/restore data (I usually just use Titanium Backup app from the market) proceed to install .zip of ComRom 2.0
6) select reboot phone and let it boot up, it may take a while the first time
7) congrats, you're rooted and running ComRom 2.0
8) to install the patch simply hold the power button down until the menu pops up, select recovery
9) this will boot you into CWR again, no data/cache wipe necessary simply install .zip ComRom 2.1 patch then reboot phone again
10) congrats now you're rooted, voodoo'd, and running the latest ComRom
hope this helps, that's about as simple and short as I can make it

this should give you a current recovery (CWM), I use the first one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046905
most everything else can be found in landsharks thread here: odin, the samsung drivers, debloated/deodexed EB01 and ED01, and how to install all of that (props to landshark68 for putting it all together)

superchunkwii put up a pretty nice detailed thread on how to get to ComRom if you're at stock (or need to go to stock, then go to ComRom):

yes it has an option for enabling/disabling lagfix but its optional.. even if you decide to flash a rom with no voodoo kernel you can still use that CWM with no worries

Thanks. Since I'm allready rooted, can I skip to steps 20-24 and do that?

yeah if you're rooted and running the baseband you want (ED01 or whatever) the boot into CWR and flash the rom you want... you're going to need to do a data/cache/dalvik wipe before flashing the initial ComRom 2.0 package so make any backups you want.. once its done installing reboot phone to make sure everything works right, then boot back into recovery and flash the patch (no wiping or anything needed) any questions or problems be sure to post them
