Eris and Windows 7 Drivers.... - Droid Eris General

Believe it or not there are actually a lot of people that don't know this but, if you want to get Windows 7 to recognize your device without having to install SDK or manually installing drivers or you feel like you're just stuck. Go to this site, http://junefabrics.com/android/download.php download and install PDAnet and it will fix your drivers issues !! Just wanted to post a topic about this because I've had quite a few people ask me about getting drivers for HTC to work with Windows 7.

i pulled the driver out of the install for htc sync. it is a zip file posted here: http://www.multiupload.com/C2VKYM1RDH
Note: this is a file to extract on your computer in order to point your windows 7 search for drivers to the correct folder. DO NOT TRY TO FLASH IT
it worked for me. if it doesn't work for you, let me know and i will pull it.

You can also download the driver files from htc http://developer.htc.com/ thats what i use
Sent from my GSBv1.6-ERIS using XDA App

Yea pretty much just used HTC Sync. Never had an issue on either of my Win7 PCs.
Sent from my GSBv1.6-ERIS using XDA App

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying I myself am having problems with the drivers. Just have had a lot of people ask me about them over time and figured I would tell them about installing PDAnet as a little workaround.

I don't remember ever doing anything except plugging my Eris in and letting Win7 find drivers.

I'm guessing you're the one who recommended that link in another thread, that I thanked you for. I'm a "latest version hound", so I was very happy to find that file at the bottom of the list at that link that has just the very latest HTC drivers alone, no HTC Sync, and that both the ADB and the RNDIS drivers were updated in October or so. Probably won't make any practical difference, but it's nice to be updated.

I work on people's computers for a living, so I install Windows 7, both 32 and 64-bit, quite a lot (several times a week). I believe you. I just have to say that Windows 7 most definitely (not even with SP1, which I'm using) still doesn't include any of the Android drivers.
I don't recall if Windows/Microsoft Update might have the drivers, so that if you have Windows 7 set to look online for drivers it might've found them there. I'm guessing that might've been how your Windows 7 retrieved the drivers. Either that or you didn't realize or remember that you had already installed HTC Sync or something else which included them.
This isn't a flame or anything, so I hope it doesn't appear to be.
I will add that I avoid drivers coming from Microsoft Update except as a last alternative, since they are normally not up to date, and/or crippled versions of the full driver installations from the original manufacturers.

This is all I did, and I did not have to search online for them, I plug my phone into 3 different Win 7 machines regularly.

Maybe we're talking about two different things. If you're only referring to mounting the phone as a USB storage, then I think that'll work without any special drivers; as far as Windows is concerned, it's just another thumb drive.
It's for using ADB or any Windows software which uses ADB that requires the drivers which are not included in Windows 7. Also for tethering, which is a separate driver than the one for ADB. http://developer.htc.com/ at the bottom of the list has an updated zip with drivers dated from October or November. It includes drivers for both ADB and RDNIS (used for tethering) for Windows XP, Vista, and 7; 32 and 64-bit in the cases of Vista and 7. It doesn't include drivers for 64-bit XP, but that should be so much even more rarer now than it was even when before Vista came out.
No idea what all drivers PDANet includes. As an OEM, I always go straight to the manufacturer for drivers. Not always user friendly for the average user, but if you know how to navigate around the different manufacturer's websites, then you always wind up with the most up to date, bug-free and feature-full driver.

Didn't mean for this post to turn in to "who has the better way to get drivers." This was simply a post for a little tip that a lot of people don't know about. No need for everyone to list where they get drivers from and why it's better than installing PDAnet. No offense to some of you, I know you're just stating your opinion. However, this was just a tip for some users who have tried windows update and htc sync and the htc site itself.

I hope you weren't offended by me, either, and I apologize that I continued to lead the thread off topic since I felt strongly about clearing up what drivers Windows does and doesn't include, since I deal with that every day. For the record, I have no issue at all with recommending anything, including installing anything as relatively innocuous as PDANet, to help people, in order to make things easier for people.

Stupid question, maybe Im retarded... Web OS

One question about HP Web OS...
I saw their tablet on display at Fry's and the web OS looked very interesting.
Is there any way to port this set up to the Gtab, or any other Android device?

technically webOS runs on the linus kernel so It's not impossible, but the porting of all the stuff they put on top of the kernel + drivers + everything else would probably be too taxing and not really worth it, so I would say you will never see a port.
no i don't think that its possible to port it since they are two different operating systems, but maybe someone really really really techy could. Its like Mac and PC you can't install Mac OSX on a PC. <- ignore that i feel really stupid now. lol

That point doesn't matter too much.
On my HD2 I can run WM6.5, Android, WP7, Ubuntu, and winxp, so the "other operating system" thing doesn't apply.
And you actually CAN install maxOSX on a PC and you can install windows 7 on a Mac.
I think it is technically possible to port WebOS, there's just no developer interest in such a taxing project.

It may have been, but you can actually run the OS on the phone too.

Looks like I jumped in late? Can I get an update?

So it seems we finally got out phones rooted.
Can someone post me a link to a good guide on rooting the phone and also recommend some good things to do once it is rooted such as a good ROM or any other tweaks such as removing bloatware or anything else that improves the phone overall?
Thanks for the help,
Dakota

I know I have a lot of learning to do, and I know it helps to have step by step, instead of just jumping right in. There are a lot of people saying a lot of different ways to do things right now.
I used to come here to load roms onto my old windows phones, Evo 3d is my first android phone, things are a lot different. I feel a little over my head right now. I'll probably wait until I find a video or something to walk me through it, just to be safe.

Hey NOOB, I was thinking the other day about why your MIUI guide isn't stickied yet. What would it take to get that done because there is a ton of useful info in there and I would hate for it to get buried 3 or 4 pages down, even though no one reads stickies anymore.
Also, I an going to write up a Battery Saving guide and could use your help with CM7/MIUI tweaks. I will write up a mock up this weekend. PM me with any thoughts.
Thanks. Actually, I was wondering that the other day as well. I'm just not sure how I would go by doing it...
A Battery Saving Guide is an awesome idea! And I would be privileged to help in the making of it. If you could, PM me the mock up and I'll see if there is anything that could be added. However, knowing your knowledge on battery life I'm not sure how much I will be able to add to it
I'll hit you up on Saturday or Sunday night. I need your 2.3.x kernel knowledge. I got all the 2.2 ROMs and kernels down, just not the 2.3's too much.
Also I put a note in your guide to hopefully get the mods to look at it to at least see if it is stickable.
Sorry for the hijack, but View attachment 801941

Juopunutbear's S-OFF not Windows Supported anymore?

Anyone have the windows files and is willing to share it? I really need to go back S-OFF'd. And Hasoon's S-OFF toolkit isn't on his dev host.

why does using Ubuntu scare so many people? you can have it on your computer without effecting windows at all.
two options
1. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/install-ubuntu-with-windows
2. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
They removed the windows versions for certain reasons. 1 was because people were completely disrespecting them and the hard work they put into achieving this for us. BUT a big reason was that some users have reported bricking their devices using the windows tool! so just remember, they didn't take it down just because wanted to see XDA get flooded with "what happened to the Windows s-off tool" threads, it was for a reason. So why take that risk, just use Ubuntu..

It doesn't scare me at all. It's just the hassle of having to do everything, especially if you prepared yourself with the files. Like how it would take time to transfer them to a USB, install another OS, then load the files on it for another ten minutes. It's time consuming! I hope you understand what I'm saying. As for the reasons why they removed it, I never had a problem with the tool at all, and to the people that dissed them, :flickoff: to them, because I think these guys are cool for contributing their work and putting their time on it

I just ran Ubuntu from a DVD and did the S-Off. You don't have to install it or change your system in anyway. This was the first time I used a non-windows OS and it wasn't that hard. I just used Google to figure out what I was doing because it is very different than windows.
Don't get mad at them. It's for users' own good! They are trying to stop people getting bricked! Ubuntu is nothing to be afraid of either.

Don't make a thread with such a wild title, if everyone did this - how could anyone navigate without reading every single thread.
Additionally, what makes you think it'll work on your phone? It's not even supported anymore by Ubuntu. Even when it was, it was extremely incomplete.
