with my old diamond I could control my mac throught salling clicker: salling.com
I was wondering if a similar program exists for HTC hero & mac
(controlling itunes etc)

Unfortunately none, there is not Salling Clicker for Android, maybe next year. I was looking for it too. At the moment I could get it work with my Sony Xperia X1 and Nokia E65. While there is Compatible problems for the Htc Diamond 2. Very good on Xperia X1, very good indid, perfect !!
Remote Buddy works well, and it has a web interface so you can use that on your hero
