Hi everyone,
I just recently learned how to theme and create icons for your status bar, so I feel the need to expand on that and help others and create good looking things for them. I'm posting a screen shot of what I have done with my phone and would like to get ideas and/or things that you have done. I know there is a screenshot thread, but this isn't the same. This is coming together to make the best looking icons or best looking color scheme for our phones.
I am using JBoogies Orange deblur Froyo rom and I flashed his red ginger theme for a base to start. A lot of what he did is no longer there, but it was very helpful since I am just starting because it gave me a good idea of what needed to be done.
I don't know how to create a flashable zip, so if I provide you anything it will be an apk that you will overwrite your apk with, unless someone can explain to me how to create the zip.
Anyways, share your ideas.. Here is a few pics of my work so far.
Widgetlcker modded, changed battery icon to draining android, changed wifi icon, themed signal bars, themed dial pad, with the help of JBoogie created a black swype keyboard, themed the smaler icons like vibrate, alarm etc. (I have also had the circle battery icon and the regular one of course just colored. )

How can I change the Dial Pad-Number-Background?
What file do I have to change in the BlurDialer.apk?
When I put a background in the dial_num_x_... file it doesn´t work!

Yes, blurdialer.apk, you need to go into res>drawable-hdpi
You can modify the colors in there, but do not mees with any file ending in .9
then you need to change the permissions before you overwrite the existing app.
should look like this
read write execute

I know but what file exactly do I have to change?
I mean the background of the Dial Numbers!
Ahh, As far as I know the only way to do it is to theme the .9 files. Here is how you can do it http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/draw9patch.html
I have not tried, if you do let me know how it works out
Have you done the Theme above?
There the Dial-Numbers have a square around them. How do you do that? Which file did you changed?

It's the dial text field, I guess I have messed with the .9. I know usually those aren't editable, but apparently they are, I just hadn't noticed that is what I was editing. Just made those straight lines rather than the round look
that android battery icon is 2big imo
what i do like is the slidebars on widgetlocker... do u know how I could do that on default lockscreen that comes with jboogies rom?

Yes, you can do it in the framework.res apk. Let me know if you need any help
This is a Dialer themed for someone based off of JBoogies Honeycomb theme. Only tested on JBoogies roms.
Looking good! I like changing the icons. Battery looks good to me.

Ok so here's a quick gingerbread theme for wildpuzzle, i thought i'd do a quick rush/job in order to see if it would work. This is only tested on wildpuzzle, might work on other sense roms like SunaAbh, i don't know.
here's a screenie from melvnchng
v3.0
finished the framework, added settings.apk
v2.4
Changed the status bar close background, added more stuff. White text should be working now.
Nice work!
Does it work properly? I hope nothing fc's lol.

Does this theme chang only the icons or does it change the menu colors , icons and notification bar ?
Also, screenshot,.please.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
As I stated, I'm not giving screensv as I'm not using a sense rom. I tried to put the black popup menus and stuff, but I don't know if they appear properly thats why I need screenshots of the theme by other people. I can make the theme with just the status bar icons if you want.
Well, for me, only the status bar gets modified. Black Menu's dont work. But anyhow, nice theme

Cheers mate, look forward to it.
nice theme mate. prefer this to the wildpuzzle one that comes with the rom. look forward to seeing what else is added to it in future versions. keep up the good work
Ok updated to 2.1, ive tried to put the black menus. ill probably update later tomorrow to have more of the gingerbready menu icons like the tick boxes and stuff.
let me know if it works, off to bed now
Good News:
Black Menu's work
Bad News:
The text is black as well, until and unless you place your finger over it and select it. Don't know if it is supposed to be like that though.
Appreciate your good work.
Have you tried both the apk and flashable, I need to go look at the xmls again, arghhhhh why are you so gay sense whyyy lolol
Just tried with the flashable ZIP. (I thought the APK was for v2.0 )
Will try the APK and post back.
EDIT: Similar results with the APK. :/
ok going to upload 2.2 (apk is updated to 2.2 as well)
i think i fixed the white text, and also made the stuff more gingerbready.
if it doesn't work.. then i'll get someone else to help.
not bad since i don't even use a sense rom, i wonder why none of you guys using sense try to make a theme =P.
No change in 2.2 either. :/
I would build a theme if I had the slightest idea how to. Still looking up the tons of documentation available...
Hi everyone again,
This time I present to You HoneyComb inspired status bar icons.
185 icons, some of them are reworked from my previous theme (You can find it HERE). New battery icons, and smooth charging animation. WiFi status is a bit strange, but after a few runs You love it Hope You find them cool enough for You devices
Icons have transparent background, and they will work with all themes for SE Eclair roms, but just in some cases, like Black HTC Theme (by draco_ag) the icons are full compatible. What that mean? It means that the battery icons will update every 1%. In other themes cases the battery stat icon will be updated every 10%. This is about the xml files in framework-res.apk. Not every theme is capable to update battery icon every 1%, sorry... Please notify themes authors, maybe they consider updating.

Tutorial HOW-TO-INSTALL:
- Open framework-res.apk with 7zip
- Select "res" folder from downloaded archive, and drag him to opened 7zip window
- When prompted "Are sure You want to copy...?" select "YES"
- Close 7zip
- Push framework-res.apk to your phone

Please have in mind, that it's the only fast, and safe method. Don't try to update framework-res.apk another way, or You get a bricked phone after pushing file to system folder!
If You aren't sure how to do this please ask. Asking don't cost, and can protect from messing up Your phone!
The safest way to push framework-res.apk to Your phone is using ADB Mask Controller. When You f*ck up Your phone is always a chance to get back with this app. Please be careful, and read everything before You try to install!

Well, You can try color them in photoshop. I think it's not a big problem. For now it's just white version from me.
i need to integrate these icons into cyanogenmod...but for that I require bigger icons 25*25 pixel
i had made a request for bigger icons in your other thread too...please can u provide them (i need the icons from ur older thread, not these)

Sorry, I don't do nothing for the CM until it's out of beta.
You can always resize these icons by yourself. Just canvas images to 25px if You want to keep the quality. Ofc notice me if You do that.

Resizing the image degrades the quality....
Canvasing the images preserves the quality but the icons look tooo small in cyanogenmod...
thats why i want the original icons in 25*25 dimension

how long does this usually take? uhmmm just tried it now, and its almost 5 min... will play dota and check out after 30 min,,
i manually replaced the framework-res.apk using root explorer, phone automatically died after pasting then hangs on the SE screen... more than 30 min and nothing happened...
care to share?.. T_T
do you think i still need to set the permission like this?
if ever this one is the missing link, can you help me combine your two themes... sorry for posting in your two post, =[
NOTE: I just happen to tweak it more for better visual.
ATTN: Stay tuned for more versions of motocharge with modified visuals !
Do know that this app actually eats up battery (not much though) but if you're desperate to know on what % your battery is, then this is the application for you !
This application is meant to show your battery life in increments of 1% on the left side of notification bar.
I appologize if there's a bug with the application as i don't have my defy with me for now. So do report if there's such thing.

Looking good! My ROM has a light grey status bar, so the white numbers makes it hard to read. Will there be a version with black numbers?
Thanks for your work!
OK i've got it sorted - had to uninstall the original version.
Only thing is can you make the numbers black as they are really hard to see in white.
Looks good though - well done and thanks

open the zip ....change the pictures with black numbers?
ull find icons in another thread (i think its circular battery something)
repack and done
When you install the application, you can go to the app drawer and go to motocharge and in that, i believe you can switch from Black bar to White.

Same here on pays-rom 5.0 with black status bar, no white numbers.
Looking forward to it. Good luck with the tests.
Edit: red numbers <15 are visible though. Perhaps its a transparancy thing with your white number icons? Did you use transparant numbers at a white canvas?
I've attached the app for white status bar as well. Check the first post !
Can't get the white one to install. Tried uninstalling the old version but the new one tries but then states application not installed.

Hi guys,

Sent from my TBolt using my f**king thumbs...
Yep, part of the theme. If you open up a Tmo theme engine apk you'll notice "frameworks_res_text_select..." pngs which are the bounding arrows then there should be an xml indicating the highlight color.
If you just want to swap out the ones you currently have instead of applying a theme, they're located in /system/framework/framework-res.apk named "text_select_handle...". Find a theme with the color you want and swap away.

thanks for the info.
I'm currently running the basic GB debloat. I've looked in the
framework-res.apk but I didn't see the stock icons. So I then
looked in the htc.resources.apk and I found them:
- text_anchor_bar.png
- text_anchor_bar_top.png
So i used ninjamorph to replace those 2 pngs but it still shows
the stock icons :/
any idea where else those icons could be?
I just downloaded the GB debloat from here to check (i assume that's the one you're on).
As I mentioned, they're in /system/framework/framework-res.apk/res/drawable-hdpi and they're named "text_select_handle...".
Also, remember to reboot after changing to see the effects.

yup that is the one
Yes i did look I did find that folder earlier:
/system/framework/framework-res.apk/res/drawable-hdpi
the thing is it already has those orange icons in there below
however it still continues to show the top green/black ones.
ah, I get what you're saying now. Yea, sense uses those custom ones from htc.resources. I don't mess with sense roms any but I'm pretty sure replacing the green ones like you did with ninjamorph then finishing the project and rebooting should have worked.
You might also want to try deleting those files and see if it falls back to the ones in framework (not sure if that will work but easy to try). As I said, I don't mess with sense roms so I'm not completely sure. Maybe someone that themes sense roms can help you more.

cool thanks for confirming for me. obviously we were on the same
page lol because I just did both of the above before i read this
- deleting the stock green icons, ended up crashing the mail/msg apps.
I was unable to even open either of the 2.
- i then used ninjamorph to replace the stock green ones
in htc.resources. even resized them to match.
but they reverted back to the original ones after reboot lol.
thanks again for your help @absolute
does anyone know how I can apply this messaging icon without using a ROM that has one. I want the stock look and feel but just with the icon changed. Or at least does anyone know where I can get that specific icon?

Hahaha thats neat, I feel good knowing that I'm not the only one that noticed the different messaging icon from the boxes and previews. Though it'd be cool if you could change the look of it to that; looks a lot more elegant than the stock one, I'm interested in this.
For the longest i wondered why my weather widget was bigger than the one in all the preview pictures of the phone but then i realized it was resizable..
it bothers me so much.. but I deal with it.. there are themes with this new icon but I really don't want much/anything changed but the messaging icon itself

Hmm, heres an idea, it will LIKELY work I'm thinking, ask the devs for their messaging apk, and replace your messaging app the one from the custom rom using root explorer. Im betting it will work! Its at least worth a shot id say.
hmm.. you're right.. I never really thought of that! It wouldn't hurt giving it a whirl.. while making a donation in return.

Yeah, worth a shot, just back up your entire rom/app beforehand though. in case it doesn't work.
did u try to put out our mms.apk from root/system/apps on ur pc. open it with winrar go to this directory res\drawable-hdpi and just replace the .png file of ic_launcher_smsmms.png i think... and after that put the whole .apk back to your phone. the only thing u need is root and rootexplorer or es explorer, which i used
for it worked that way and it was preaty easy... give it a try
yeah but where would I get that icon to begin with...
EDIT: i did what you told me (i found a ROM that had the icon I was looking for) but it looks a little low res for it to be a good icon.. any ideas on how to work around that one?
EDIT II: I figured it out.. edited the apk but when I go to install/reinstall? it says "application not installed" and I have no idea how to edit it in Root Explorer.
