sooooo yea. haha. I had an issue with my phone but this started a few days before. I would click delete thread, and it would take that thread and delete all the messages but the thread still stays shown up in my messaging with (no subject) as the title. they wont permanently delete. I ended up doing a reset to stock the other day and of coarse, did a titanium backup, I couldnt find the file in titanium backup which backs up all the texts so I could uncheck it. so now theyre all back and its doing the same thing again. wont delete any text message threads.
anyone else ever have this issue?? I've looked all over XDA and cant find anyone else who's posted something similar.
Do you have an app like sms backup+ or an equivilant that restores/backups the sms?
Anytime I flash a rom, or ODIN, all sms are gone. Never heard of someone not able to get rid of them. Almost sounds like something is making them sync back...
haha i know right? I used titanium backup and it synced everything back up to where it was, all settings and contacts popped back up, and text messages. Works like a charm. and it deffinitely wiped everything. but I was having this problem before that anyways. and now after the reset, I am still having this darn issue haha. Its beyond me, and as far as I've looked around here in XDA, no one else seems to have this issue, with any android device for that matter
edit: forgot to mention. no I dont have SMS backup or anything. just regular stock texting app
UPDATE: I was looking further into this, all text threads that I delete show up underneath the other on the thread list and are showing as "Dec 31st, 1969"
And again, whenever I try to delete a thread, It will delete all the text messages within it, but the thread remains at the bottom of the list and shows "(no subject)"
something is wrong here haha
could it be the kernel I placed on here? I put on the Voodoo KA7 stock kernel from here ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870480

Hi All,
I have an sms thread that's ~5000 texts (sad, I know), and I get a force close every time I try to delete. I've read about clicking "wait" when the force close message appears, and I've done that but it hasn't helped.
I've also searched through XDA and found a post in a Hero G2 Touch forum (I can't post a link because I'm new). There was a code posted to put in the command prompt, but it's not working for me. Here's the code:
mkdir c:\temp
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db c:\temp (this will backup the database to your computer at c:\temp, just in case)
adb remount
adb shell
rm /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
reboot
Can anyone please help?
Thank you!

Just read that it is the one thread that is over 5000. Thats a lot ridiculous, i dont think a lot of the people on here have ever tried to delete that many text from an eris. I honestly have no idea aside from backing up your stuff and factory resetting it.
Dang. I didn't realize Eris couldn't store the texts... I guess I'm just going to delete a few when I get time each day because I don't want to take a chance and screw it up by resetting it. It's a work phone...

it can store the texts just 5,000 in one thread is a little excessive and i think you could agree
there is an app on the market called sms delete or something, just search for it, it cleans up old sms's based on how old they are. takes a while, but it works.

I have. Mainly because I've got a girlfriend that I don't see every day, a boring job, and I'm used to not having to delete texts (since I had an iPhone for so many years).
SMS quick delete and all variants DO NOT GET RID OF THE PROBLEM. Those programs will force close just like handcent, chomp, and the stock messaging apps will. Do a factory reset, and just delete your threads before they get too far over 100 texts. Yeah, its a pain in the ass, but I can tell you that my Eris runs SO much smoother without a 5000 thread of texts sitting around...
and as far as the Eris and holding texts goes, it starts getting buggy with 150+ in a single thread. something about the Eris not allocating memory properly or something, and just completely ****ting the bed. or at least thats what I gathered from googling the problem.
Yes, I agree 5000+ is a little excessive, but similar to bill d's situation, I have a boyfriend who's 2000 mi away right now in a place with sketch service, so we text more than we talk on the phone.
I found a program "SMS cleaner free" (I can't pay for any apps b/c this is a work-issued phone) that doesn't work completely (it still FCs here and there), but has come the closest to being better than deleting each text one-by-one or compeltely resetting my phone. But, sms cleaner allows for me to delete texts with certain words in them so I search for mildly common words like "we", "me", etc which come back with ~400-800 entries and delete those groups. I'm down to 3600 texts now.
I'll get there eventually. Thanks for the help guys.

Hi Guys
Im just get a samsung galaxy s2 this week and am having a small problem.
Ive looked around for answers but cant find any. Ive just remembered how helpful this site was a when I had my HD2 so thought id ask here.
The problem im having is deleting messages. In the messaging app you can press and hold on a thread then a box comes up asking if you want to delete. I hit yes and all the messages go but it leaves behind the empt thread to that contact. Ive tried deleting through thr menu, hand sent and clearing the data and catch from manage apps menu but noth seems do get rif of the empty threads. Any one had this problem too?
no problems here i hit the delete thread and it deletes
Just done a factory reset and the threads have gone. sent some new messages to test it and right back to the begining again. New threads wont delete. Only the messages inside the threads delete and the contact is left in the message app. Please any help would be great. Im tempted to take it back to the shop and get a new one.
maybe some thing in settings i carnt even replicate ur problem
Well I took it back to the shop and they gave me a new phone which worked fine. It wasnt untill I used backup pro to re load my apps and data that I noticed it was happening again. Must be somthing to do with this. After another factory reset and not using backup pro everything seems to be working fine.
Stock ICS, rooted
I still have the yellow pages contact as the first one. I can't delete it. I deleted all the yellow pages apps through TB. When I click on the yellow pages contact I get a black screen then freeze. "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped" then something about TW launcher stopped. Finally get control back. Same thing happens if I try the contact again.
Help please without saying "then dont click on that contact"
had Go launcher then deleted it. I dont know if that has anything to do with anything but I thought Id mention it.
The contacts app is a touchwiz base so if you screw with it you screw with many other things. You're going to need to say exactly what you deleted, then ask for another member to send you that app.
A factory reset won't put back deleted apps. It only wipes data and resets all settings to default.
For future experiments use Titanium back up to freeze an app so you can see the effect of that.

Only thing I deleted is the yellow page and att apps. Nothing else. All other contacts work. Its just the yellow pages contact that gives me issues.
Well, what are you looking for?
How to either get rid of the yellow page contact
Flash the Flapjaxxx UCLF6 rom over yours.
Is there a comparrison of ROMs? I dont want a troubleshooting nightmare. If anything I want the same or added functionality not reduced.
XDA is no longer worth my time.

Has nothing to do with Go Launcher.
The issue is that the YP is added by default now to the Contacts.apk file. It's just a shortcut to the Yellow Pages app that you uninstalled and so it freezes the phone when you try it.
There are several versions of the Contacts.apk file without the Yellow Pages link, but I haven't had success trying them yet on my UCLF6. I am seeing if I can decompile and recompile my own Contacts.apk without the entry. If I succeed, I'll update this and the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528631
I deleted the contacts apk and odex and copied the contacts apk from this rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766933 No more YP in contacts! All seems to be working fine. You can probably pull the apk from Flapps rom as well.
Hi,
Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere, but I couldn't seem to find anything on it, and everything I did find seemed to mostly be for Froyo on much older phones... The cause might still be the same but don't know.
Anyway, I recently installed SynergyRom on my Galaxy S4, I'm also admittedly a hoarder of text messages, and have 11,000 or so text messages backed up through sms backup & restore. I kind of like having them all on my phone (yes, I've read before that sometimes restored messages cause minor issues, but I like it *shrug*). Anyway, I restored the messages to my phone, and eventually when I was texting someone, the stock messaging app got a force close, after which, all of my messages had disappeared. I didn't think much of it, restored again, and then today when I received a text the app force closed again, and all my messages disappeared again. Any thoughts?
Hopefully the answer isn't just I need to be less crazy about saving texts, but if that's really the cause, that's it.. Anyway, help/suggestions would be appreciated. T hanks!
Waiting for the answer too. I did not root my phone or anything, just the original phone from store. Sometimes the messages in message app disappear. The phone shows "there is no message", the only thing I can do is create new message. After I restart the phone, the messages come back in the message app.
I know by default in the messaging settings that there is a setting check box for "delete old messages....seems after so many message it will delete from a certain point...something like 200 messages...deletes oldest first. Go in and uncheck the box...see if that helps. Having that many texts is nuts...your a texting border...

Yea, I know about limits, and that's definitely not it.. I've heard other people say the text messages come back after you restart, but I'm not sure if that's only if you restart right away without sending more texts.. Mine didn't come back after a restart at least, but I didn't restart until much later.. Thanks for the suggestions so far though!

I konw some data recoverying program will help to restore text messages from phone directly.
Not sure about retrieving from an app.
Visit CNET you might find something useful.
Was this ever solved? I'm having this too on STock mj7
What's the deal with this phone not giving notifications? I don't get half of my text notifications even if I use Go SMS and the pop up feature. Any ideas? I have the apps protected from sleeping so I'm at a loss.
Happening to me also with gmail and Google Voice.
Yeah its kind of ridiculous. Does this thing deep sleep that much that it doesn't allow the notifications or what? If its a bug in their version of JB then this thing is going back for a refund since we're not getting any updates.

I had the same problem a little over a month ago.
The solution that worked for me was to find a twrp from someone not having the issue, (someone has posted one on this forum already).
Pull your most recent twrp to your PC. Open their twrp with clean system file, copy three files related to system backup over your system files in your twrp.
Put your twrp backup back to your SD card and restore from it.
I had the same problem you guys are having and this solved it. Hangouts was the only app still broken after and it barely even mattered to me.
Hope this helps. Please look further down the list in Q&A section to find original posts regarding this problem and solution.

I had the same problem
My gmail email were not getting pushed. The reason was is the phone was not reporting to apps that it had a interenet connection. Check your google now search page. At the top it will say no interet connection. even though you are connected. I had one twrp image that was connected to the internet but on the lock screen it said no service. I had one good twrp backup that I used and got it to where I am some one pleased with it. If you modify too much stuff in that build.prop that might be the casue or if you have renamed the provider folder in your cust folder that might be the cause or if you mess up you local.prop file that might be the cause. I'm only guessing on those from the things that I have tried.
