[Q] Phone won't let me download apk files? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to download apk files such as the Gingerbread KB on one of the threads, and I get the following ..."Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone". It's not the first file I was not able to download. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
Thanks in advance,
Brian

I have the same problem with the stock browser.. I started using opera browser and it works so far

By default, installing non-market .apk's is not allowed.
However, if you use a tool called SuperOneClick, you can enable the use of non-market apps. Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960336
Also, this isn't the right section for a question like this, this forum is for developers working on the phone.

I use astro file manager to allow browser download

I did that when I rooted the phone. Thanks

I got the comment and it was correct
I was trying to download an unsigned .zip file. I'm rooted and can download .apk files.

I guess the browser blocks it by default. I'm sorry about the bad advice, I don't use the stock broswer.
I can confirm that you can download .apk files with mobile Firefox.

This is what I use as well. Download astro file manager, go to preferences and choose allow browser downloads- this will allow you to download apk files and other file types from the stock browser.

If you are trying to download from and XDA attached file, it wont work, xda doesnt pass the right mime type for apks for whatever reason.

Moved to Q&A as not android development

Look for an app called download crutch or download crutch lite. It'll let you download anything.

With Dolphin-HD I can download Zip files and others, but not all.
Install an app that opens Zip and Rar files, then you should be able to download them. Like a filebrowser.
i was able with firefox.
with the original internet app i couldn't.

Thanks fyi, gonna try it.
"Download all files" (get it @market) should do the trick, still haven't tried it though!
I'm using Download All Files and it's working flawlessly.

Is there an app to put files/folders into a zip or rar?

I have searched the Market and Google but cannot find the app I need.
Basically, I am looking for an app where I can put files and folders into a zip or rar file, and password protect them.
Does anyone know of such an app?
Thanks

Haven't used it for a long time but give a try to ES File Explorer.
Rot explorer will let you zip up files but I'm not sure about the password protect part.
Have you tried androzip?
Edit: I just checked and androzip will allow you to put a pw on zip files. Its free in the market as best as I can remember.

If you're downloading through the browser, I believe they go to /sdcard/download

The root/install apps are in system/apps - I'm still looking for the others

Other browsers will default to different locations. Miren, for example, will download to its sdcard folder.

I am having the same problem. I sideloaded the Amazon app, but it only opens if I go to the downloaded APK and reinstall it. It says I am replacing an installed app, i Okay, and it works just fine, until I close it. Search reveals nothing.
any thoughts?
Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the Amazon app?
Also, if you have access to a rooted device that has the app working correctly, use root explorer to grab the apk from data/app and put it into the same directory on your new device.
I have also had success just installing that apk. I have always used 'package installer'... never 'app installer'.

Ways to install an application on my phone...

Hello, and thanks for entering!
For certain problems with my phone I have no way to install an apk since I have no file browser, or wifi, or bluetooth, etc.
Now, is there any way to install an application alternately?
Thanks in advance!
Install using adb
Try downloading the app on your pc and install it using adb.

Of course, the main problem I have is that neither does the USB detect me ... Am I ruined?
If you have a browser installed, you probably don't need a file browser, just download an apk from any website, and open it from the downloading list in the browser. you may start with a file manager.
