[Q] wont send texts that are too long...? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ive had very annoying occurrence happen recently and i havent done anything major to make it happen that im aware of. im running an x10a that i've put the 2.1 official decrypted rom on, rooted and installed the multitouch kernel. i never had any problems after doing all this...this happened later.
if my text messages are too long (I dont know how many characters) but im assuming when it gets to "2nd message length" it always says cannot send. as soon as i shorten the message it will send without fail...everytime. this is driving me nuts, does anyone have any ideas? i've taken the battery out several times for 30 seconds, deleted call logs and message logs. i dont run any other 3rd party messaging app either. does anyone have a clue what this is about? im using ATT. Help!
--i am using ADW launcher EX 1.0, but i dont see how that could change anything, it loads the same stock messaging application.

I had this problem too when I first updated to 2.1 from 1.6 (using Handcent SMS as well). After one of the other 2.1 updates, I haven't had this problem ever since. Seems it got sorted out on one of the newer basebands.
What firmware are you using?

Ah, I see. I'm running baseband 2.1.55 and 2.1.1.A.0.6 build.
You could try installing either a new firmware or a new baseband and see if that helps. You could use either the 2.1.A.0.435 build (baseband 2.1.54) or the one I'm using as they are pretty much the same.

heres a dumb question...i know what baseband means in general--the modulation of the cell's RF, correct? so what does the "baseband version" have to do with? different baud rates?
im running, firmware version 2.1-update 1
baseband 2.0.49
kernel 2.6.29
build 2.0.2.A.0.24
I thought i had the latest ROM from sony which i figured was safest and most practical because all the other custom roms lack support for camera, etc. ill update the baseband with flashtool if someone can direct me to the latest one. i dont really want to put on another ROM because i hate restoring/redownloading everything on my phone unless its a real important update.

no one..??

The baseband version just means that it's been updated to improve it and to fix any problems that might have shown up in previous versions.
The latest firmware brings performance improvements, dual touch, and updates to Mediascape and Timescape among other things. It's up to you whether you want to update your firmware but I would recommend it.

I read somewhere that the latest .55 fixed this issue

I had the same problem. If you use AT&T, I may be able to help. When a text message (sms) gets too long it changes into an multimedia message (mms) like a sending a pic. For this you need your data connection working. When your message gets too long it should tell you that it is converting to mms.
What ended up being the problem for me was the APN settings commonly found here in xda. I don't know if that one is outdated now due to changing G speed networks or the whole smartphone/Android revolution, but it doesn't work for sending mms. I think it may be due to tracking separate data and message usage for billing.
Anyway, if you use AT&T you should have 2 APNs, not one. You should have Media Net and Media Net MMS. If you need the settings let me know, or use the "automatic search for network" function in settings/Sony Ericsson (I think that is the path. I'm on 2.2 now that doesn't have it) Make sure you delete the old APN first.
Let me know if this works or you need any help.

My partner had this problem. She fixed it by throwing the phone at a wall. And buying a Motorola
x10 running trip's MIUI. It rocks.

found it, the path is wireless & network settings>mobile networks>Access Point Names. In there it shows Media Net and Media Net MMS. only Media Net has a "radio button" next to it to select. Media Net MMS does not. but, either one i can click on and change settings. what are the settings suppose to be? that would be very helpful. also, what 2.2 rom do you have? is it stable and fully functional?

IF you go to the MENU/Settings/About Phone page at the top it should say, "Sony Ericsson" that item will retrieve your APN settings based on your sim card.
If that doesn't work for you or it's grayed out:
Service Provider NAME: MEdia Net MMS
- APN: wap.cingular
- Username: [email protected]
- Password: CINGULAR1
- MMSC http://mmsc.cingular.com
- MMS proxy wireless.cingular.com
- MMS port: 80
- MCC: 310
- MNC: 410
- APN Type: mms

I thought the X10 was only capable of using only 1 APN?
Although earlier reports claimed it uses 2.
Or is this Network Specific?
Nevermind it's not important now...
I had a huge problem getting my mms settings working and read a lot about it all over the interweb.
Looking at the settings above they should do WAP and MMS.
To get a radio button next to those settings just delete MMS from the APN type or do what I did and type "mms, default, supl" (without the quotes) in instead
The "Default" in the APN field places the Radio button next to it just as leaving the field blank.

I have tried messing with the APN's like you suggested, but they always automatically update themselves back to the correct Media Net and Media Net MMS. Proof is that the OP never manually put 2 APNs in, yet when he went to check they were already there. Which leads me to believe that his problems are not with the APN after all.
Maybe that's one of the differences in the X10a.... it can use 2 APNs. Mine works fine, and I don't have a radio button next to the MMS APN. I think the second MMS APN is active when data is off/wifi is on, and allows for separate tracking of data and MMS usage. Just my guess...

If you flash you will wipe your phone. You need to use the SE backup and restore app on your phone first. Also, if you don't have it, titanium backup or my backup pro are good. Search market.

I just want to make sure we're on the same page. we're talking about flashing the new baseband, right? flashing a new baseband will wipe the phone? I flashed the multitouch kernel and it didnt wipe the phone. i thought you had to pretty much load a new rom to wipe the data ??

Good question. Flashing the multitouch kernel was an add-on. I've never flashed just a new baseband. However, since you are having trouble that not everyone is having, I would do a complete install. That's just my opinion, and you should do a backup just in case anyways.

This has been discussed many, many times on here and elsewhere. AT&T did NOT release the 2.1 update yet. If you are impatient, you can go here and flash the X10a world generic firmware. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825201
^^^^^^^^^
I'm a USA AT&T customer. I used that and I have had no problems that were not my fault in the first place
I to am on at&t I flashed 2.1 generic onto my phone no problems just remember to put your apn's in ajd you will jave 2.1 enjoy

A question for those more informed than myself
Hey Guys, wondering if you all could help me out.
I Updated my Xperia X10a on At&t using the flash method and now I cannot connect to the network... I've been looking around, but I cannot find any hits for my issue.
Basically when I go to Mobile Networks and search, it finds the AT&T Carrier, but when I click it and it tries to register it says "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network"
Just stumped, that's what I am...

You need to set your APN settings
Go to settings --> wireless & netwroks --> mobile networks --> access point names and creat a new APN as follows:
<name> att
<apn> wap.cingular
<proxy> wireless.cingular.com
<port> 80
<username> not set
<password> not set
<server> not set
<mmsc> http://mmsc.cingular.com
<mms proxy> wireless.cingular.com
<mms port> 80
<mcc> 310
<mnc> 410
<apn type> not set
I tried before to put an APN in, but with slightly different settings (username and passwords)...
Anywho, I tried your settings, I go to APN's and hit menu > New... Fill out all your information, then hit menu > save... It goes back to the blank apn screen... is that normal? or shouldn't it show the new one I just made?

You can then go back and choose it as your default. The settings I have are 100% working.
If that does not work, try repairing your firmware with SEUS.
the screen after you click "Access Point Names" just says "APNs" at the top. When I make a new one, it doesn't show up... ideas?
Also, if I restore with SEUS, will it restore 2.1? or back to 1.6?

You will restore to whatever firmware you have right now. I suggest you do this first (restore using SEUS) then enter your APN settings.
Okay, so I have done a repair through SEUS and gotten back to where I was...
Same issue... I can get into the APNs area and create a new one, but it doesn't seem to save... there is a blank area where I know there should be a list.
Also, let me express my appreciation that you are taking the time to help me.

Weird. OK try Settings --> Sony Ericsson (should be top option in the menu). Make sure you are connected to a WiFi network and try downloading the settings from SE servers.

I'm on wifi and I'm able to browse the internet on the phone

Guys, it is not APN issue - it says "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network". I had the same message before unlocking mine. But maybe I have a working hunch. When I received mine locked to TMO UK phone and tried my TMO US SIM, it just stuck on screen with network unlocking key input that is the way locked phone behaves under 1.6. But I blew away dust from my old proxy SIM card for unlocking iPhone 2008 and it worked! I was glad to save some bucks, but when I flashed 2.1, after around 16 hours I got the same error message about network and no service anymore. I had contact issue with this proxy card, so I tried several times and eventually broke it, so now I am unable to research it deeper. Without this proxy SIM card my phone behaved differently - it wanted network unlock code just after turning on. With proxy it booted silently and just showed that the network is unreachable. So I see exactly the same behavior in your phone as mine with proxy SIM card. It sounds weird and I didn't find another case like mine, but look like some way your phone is locked. I remember when iPhone wasn't cracked yet, some phones were hardware unlocked by installing some proxy cards inside the phone (by soldering), so you just need to insert your own card and it worked like unlocked. It is the only logical explanation for me now. How did you get your phone? If it is officially from ATT store, just replace it. If not - Houston, we have a problem.
No, its nothing like that... The phone is a stock att phone from an att store... It was working previously just fine and this whole mess started aster I flashed it to 2.1...
Could I have missed something while flashing I wonder?

Probably not. The only thing is getting the APN settings and all should be working fine. This may be dumb, but are you sure you are entering all the info correctly and then saving the settings. You should then choose it as your default APN.

So one more time:
Settings --> Wireless & Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Access Point Names.
Then press the far left button with the 4 boxes on top of it and click New APN and enter the settings as mentioned earlier.
If not, then try a hard reset. Remove the battery while the phone is still on, remove the SIM card and wait 10 minutes before putting it back in and turning on the phone.

[Q] (Q) Data connection is gone after firmware flashing - How to fix??

I'll try to make this post as short as possible while still including all the details. I own an unlocked samsung galaxy s 2 in the US and have ATT as my provider.
After flashing different ROMs and firmware (exynos, lite'ning, cognition and the chainfire version of my firmware to be exact), my data connection is gone. I wrestled with it yesterday to no avail, because in the end my "Mobile network state" is always disconnected. Today, however, I changed the apn settings to the old ATT "wap" settings and the internet was restored. The speeds were somewhat slow, but i didn't care so long as they remained functioning. About two hours later - the connection crapped out. Oh, and I should also mention - I got a new sim card from ATT today assuming that my issue was a messed up and card from flashing too many roms with it still inside. Needless to say, that didn't work.
So, I'm here now attempting all sorts of remedies with no luck. ATM I am on cog 5.1 with the "correct" apn settings found here on xda, which hasn't worked either.
Has anyone else has this issue of losing their data connection altogether (although keeping wifi)? Does anyone have suggestions that might bring the data back to life?
Thanks!

what correct* apn settings are you using?
I'm using "phone" for the APN and leaving the rest blank (with the exception of APN type, which is internet).
Just minutes ago I reset to default APNs one more time to see if it would work, but nothing. I'll try the wap.cingular APN now to see if it at least picks up some data.

If you are still ' Rom hunting' as such, it is always a good idea to use program like apn manager so you dont have to manually enter your settings after every flash.
As my provider has nearly every field full, it can be a very timely exercise every time you change roms - lets face it, it can take some time to find the one we love

Those settings, wherever they're from, WORK. I had memorized the other common one already, so as soon as I saw the differences in yours I knew it would work. Unfortunately, I (literally) couldn't thank you enough for it.
Is that apn yours personally or just dug up from elsewhere here on XDA? I'm hoping it stands the test of time and continues to work after tonight... The speeds are all over the place for some reason, but at this point it doesn't matter to me, I'm just glad I don't need a WIFI connection at all times.
Oh, and the APN manager is downloading as we speak - good call. I've followed DG's from when I had my captivate a while back, so I'm gonna continue testing Cognition out for a little longer. Maybe like another day - then back to flashing =)

Have you tried other ICS ROMS?
What network re you both on?
Maybe a dumb question, but have you tried sending to several would-be recipients?
I ask because I had the same problem - all ROMs, all kernels - a few weeks back, or so I thought. But the problem was with my wife's phone, not mine.
Took me about 40 attempts before I thought of trying someone else...
Tried Wanams 10.4 ROM. It seemed to send earlier. Then after ive set my phone up.I tested again, and it gave me the.
Unfortunately messaging has stopped

Yeah, just tried sending one to myself. No-go.
I had the same issues you have, but a mate of mine who works as an O2 Guru helped me sort it out
I now have only 2 APNs, just the ones I need, as I deleted all the others myself (you probably don't have to do this yourself)
You need one for internet/3G access, and one for MMS:
Internet APN (jpg image)
MMS APN (jpg image)
Passwords should be "password" if I remember correctly
These are O2 postpay/contract settings btw, not pay as you go, those might be different.
Also, screenshots were taken on CM9, so some of the settings (like APN type) may look different. The Internet APN's type should just be Internet and the MMS APN's type should be just MMS.
According to my mate you also have to do a battery pull after saving the APN settings, but I just rebooted.
Also just to make sure you're not as dumb as I was, make sure your mobile data is turned on
I wondering for ages why my MMS wouldn't work until I was told I needed mobile data on

Manually switch APNs

I've searched to the best of my ability and can't find much help. My problem is that when I'm any custom ROM (tried about 5 including CM7, CM9 and RootBox JB) I must manually switch APNs when I get a MMS message. So for example, if I receive a picture message, I have to go into my APN setting and manually select my MMS APN, then go back to my messaging app and hit download. Then once it downloads, I have to go back into my APN setting and switch back to my internet APN. On the stock ROM this was not the case. I have all the correct settings, I'm absolutely sure. I've tried editing the apns-conf.xml file to add my carriers settings. Tried flashing without the sim card in. Can't seem to get it to work. I'd really appreciate any help you guys can provide.

I assume you mean combine the two APN settings. I've tried that. All that does is leave me without internet or mms capabilities.
Seriously? what provider do you have? I'm guessing since you're in the USA judging by the american flag in your profile that you're on ATT or straight talk? Telling us what provider you have would help quite a bit..
Edit, I thought help me, help me I'm dying questions belong in the QnA forums?
Sorry, knew I was forgetting something. My carrier is Viaero. I live in the middle of nowhere in Colorado so its basically the only option. AT&T doesn't cover our area. And now this isn't an urgent issue, just something that kind of annoying. All I was looking for were some ideas on how to remedy the situation, so I thought general would be more appropriate.
Post both apns please
I've verified these with Viaero and with another SII running stock. also had an unlocked iPhone before which these worked with. Another side note, on custom roms if I put in the "APN TYPE" I get neither internet nor MMS. So I have to leave those blank to get it to work at all.
NAME
Viaero Connect
APN
internet.vedge.com
APN TYPE
internet
NAME
Viaero MMS
APN

MMSC

MMS PROXY

Did you ever figure this out? I have the same issue.
For MMS Part .... change port number "9401" to just blank

Getting MMS to work on RingPlus

A number of folks have posted about the inability to send or receive MMS in various threads, especially the RR and CM threads, without an answer. Let's work together to try to solve the problem.
I'm on the latest version of Resurrection Remix. Hoping for more guidance, as MMS works when I go back to stock... but who wants that?
The error I get back from Textly is: Failed MMS: Turn on Mobile Data (tap to resend)
Here are my APN/MMS settings:
Carrier Send Limit: 1MB
MMS Behavior: Legacy
MMSC: http://mms.plspictures.com
MMS Proxy: 68.28.31.7
MMS Proxy Port: 80
Here are some of the other threads I've stumbled upon to try to help, without avail:

Using Qksms and with the custom mms apn settings, I can get it to send using 1x. It will not send using 3G or LTE. Maybe someone can modify the apn-conf.xml in /system/etc to make mms only use 1x.
I changed the bearer under settings->cellular->apn->ringplus to 1x and unspecified but it still wont use 1x for mms. I suspect it is just missing an entry in the system apn-conf.xml.
I do not know what the values are or what entries are missing or will test it out.
This is kind of embarrassing, but I got MMS to work now. I thought for sure that mobile data was turned on, but a recent update must've turned it off.
That, and I also just re-flashed the APN settings for RingPlus: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...t/flashable-lte-fix-moto-e-6-x-boost-t3290719
I don't know which of those things ultimately fixed it, but it's now working for me, even on LTE (via Textly... I don't want to go back to the stock messaging window).

I still can only send/receive when I change to 1x or 1xRTT. But it's fine. I don't use mms much. I get the free 100 mms a month but hardly use it.
This is on CM13 official build. Maybe resurrection remix is a few build behind. It used to work on LTE for me.
