[Q] Disable 3G/EDGE when Wifi is on - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have noticed that when I turn Wifi on, the 3G symbol on my status bar disappears. Does this mean that my phone will use the Wifi connection instead of the 3G connection?
Is there some way that I can setup my phone to NOT use 3G/EDGE when Wifi is connected?

Well, AFAIK, you could always fully toggle 3g/EDGE using the Quick Settings app from the market.

togle 3g ftw and togle 3g for the president for saving my battery .

Yes. If you turn on wifi you are no longer using 3g and the 3g symbol will go away. The wifi symbol takes place because you are now solely using wifi.

[Q] Switching between 3G and Wifi?

Heey,
I just ordered a Samsung Galaxy SII, but I still have a question...
Is there a way to know if you have Wifi enabled and it is connected, that the phones is only using Wifi and not 3G. Because I have a 1GB data plan and when I use my phone at home I want it to only use Wifi and not 3G, so I can use 3G when I'm on the go.
I hope someone can help me.
Thanks in advance!
Yes you can see it (no 3g in the notification bar)
So when I get outside without Wifi, that 3G icon will show up and use 3G. And when I go home it will switch from 3G to Wifi?
Yes
10char
Thanks a lot!
This tread can be closed.
As explained earlier, status bar shows how the phone is connected to internet. By default phone uses wifi if it is on.
I uses "3G watchdog" to keep record of my mobile data usage, this app is simply great.

3G Watchdog, hmm sound like a useful app to see if I'm over my data limit.
Thanks!

[Q] Mobile data network doesn't disconect when on WiFi

3 out of 4 times my phone fails to disconnect the mobile data network when I connect to WiFi. This is draining my battery unnecessarily.
What could be causing this unless I can fix it so it is automatic I will have to stop using wifi so it doesn't waste power keeping both connections going.
I am running a 2.3.6 rom.
Do you toggle the connections or just enable/disable WiFi? When you enable WiFi and connects, does the 3G icon (the two arrows) appear next to the WiFi icon?
my phone does both I have a program that shuts it completely off when I go to work then back on when i get home based on time.the rest of the time it is on even if I go away which then it just disconnects but wifi is still on.
I have not paid enough attention to when it happens but when it does I have both the wifi icon and the data arrows at the same time.

When using wifi is LTE still on?

I notice with the One on ATT that when I have wifi turned on it stills shows 4g lte next to the wifi symbol. Just curious if both are running.
of course not. if wifi running the lte will be shut off,
that icon just means you are under lte singnal area.

It will still use the Data Network to send MMS, access location services, etc.
yes,MMS must send by your data network, and AGPS too.

Download Booster vs. WIFI Calling

So I guess I have to choose between WIFI calling and Download Booster.
Any workaround?

you don't need to choose between the two...i'm using both right now.
the only thing is that you have to turn on the Download Booster while you're on cellular, not already on Wifi.

How do you have both running at the same time if you disabled WIFI? I.e. you're saying you are on your cellular connection, not WIFI, and you click on Download Booster to turn it on. So it automatically disables WIFI Calling while you are using it.
I want to stay on WIFI, have WIFI calling enabled, and have Download Booster enabled. Otherwise, you're only using one at a time, right?

first turn off Wifi, next enable download booster, then turn on wifi.
then you have wifi calling and download booster both enabled.
that said, i don't know if you can use download booster (i.e., both cellular and Wifi) to download WHILE you're on a wifi call.
my hunch is that the phone will prioritize the call over the download but i'm no developer and couldn't even tell you where to look to confirm.

When I do it your way, my download booster icon now appears in the status bar, but it has a no symbol icon next to it (i.e. no smoking sign icon). When I disable WIFI calling, that no symbol icon goes away.

i'm out of ideas. sorry.
Why use wifi calling and the download booster at the same time?
- Wifi calling is meant to be used when you have weak or no cell signal.
- Download Booster is meant to combine your LTE and Wifi connection to allow faster downloads for large files.
If you have a strong enough LTE signal to warrant use of the Download Booster. Then you have plenty of signal for making calls.
The only reason I can think of, is that making a phone call will drop your LTE connection while you are on the phone. Negating the benefits of the Download Booster.

That's not my point.
I can't have both enabled at the same time. I actually have to go into settings to turn off WIFI calling in order to make Download Booster work. There's no way to let the system auto-select which one to use at any given time, based on what I'm doing. You have to choose which one you want enabled and ensure you manually disable the other.
FWIW, I use WIFI calling to supplement my mobile minutes, since I'm on the 100min/5GB plan.
Unless they have changed it very recently. Wifi Calling uses your plan minutes same as if you were placing a call through the cellular network.
Just don't want you to burn through your minutes, thinking that Wifi Calling means free minutes.

Actually T-Mobile have been offering free wifi calling for some time now, you just have to add the service to your account.
You can do it yourself from my.t-mobile.com under plan > change services > extra minutes > free wifi calling.

Strange wifi symbol

I connected to an hotel wifi and I am getting a weird symbol for the wifi at the notification bar. It is like the hotspot symbol inside the wifi symbol. What is the meaning? Because I do not have enabled the hotspot or wifi sharing. Thanks.

That is shown when the wifi that you are connected to is a hotspot WiFi network, for example try to share the wifi from you laptop to your phone by creating a hotspot on your laptop and connecting to it you will have her same symbol it just means that is not a router wifi connection but rather a hotspot .
Thought that was the slow WiFi so phone decided to use mobile data icon
