hello eris forum... is it possible to bypass *228? - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I found an Eris last weekend, and by the next morning when we were trying to get a hold of the owner to get it back to them, it got turned off. It has been registered as lost I'm assuming and now it is no longer active. So now that I have this Eris sitting here unactivated I figured I'd put it to good use, so I rooted it and then decided I wanted to wipe it to get rid of all the crap that was already on it. I'm a Sprint user though so little did I know that as soon as I wipe this thing I'd be presented with activation when it reboots. I'd like to figure out a way around this, but I've been drawing up blanks. If anyone can help me out or point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

searched some more on google and broadened my search away from the Eris to verizon in general and I found my answer...
Keep trying activate > end call over and over again. Apparently the activation app crashes or lets you in after a number of failed attempts. I don't recall the specifics but I did just send an exchange incredible back and this worked for me.

HELP - Can't make calls

Okay so I got my 6800 from verizon today and went to do some updates. The first thing I did was insatlled the Hard-SPL to 2.40-olipro thing. That installed fine. I had a problem where if my phones screen turned off, the device froze.
So I updated to the ROM and RADIO I got here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=371314)
Well the updates went in fine, the phone seemed to work. I had to enter my info from that SPT thing, so I did that.
Well when I call my phone, it rings then stops, then rings, then stops. It things im missing the call.
And im UNABLE to make calls, big problem. It keeps giving me this verizon woman saying we're unable to authenticate your phone.
Any help is appreciated, what can I do???
i bet you u didnt read carefully
I followed the instructions step by step. Copied my SPL info down and put it back in, etc...
Is there a way to reset this back to how it came from the factory, or am i basically screwed now.. i don't know what to do at this point... i can't use my phone And i just got it today
Use Search
Call Verizon and tell them you hard reset your phone and you need your Authorization Key.
You can search for Authorization key and you'll get many, many hits..
Authorization key goes in that ##778 area under AKEY???
I didnt see one listed when i copied my info... perhaps its just hidden?

You can't copy it down as it's never listed. You can't reuse the one VZW gives you either. If you get that message, the only option is to call VZW and ask them to generate a new one. I've done it a few times. They won't hassle you about it.

Help me help a buddy?

Ok, I'm a Samsung Captivate guy, but my buddy found a Droid Eris, and I have a couple questions.
The phone wasn't stolen by my buddy, just found by him after a college party at his house, and nobody every came back to claim it. My buddy even tried to contact people on the phone to return it to them, with no luck. So it's not like you'd be helping a criminal. Some dumb drunk college kid that's spoiled enough to not even look for their phone just left it at a house, that's all.
That being said, the phone is locked down, and I'm trying to find a way to possibly flash back to stock software and unlock the phone for him. I haven't seen the phone yet, so I don't exactly know how it it's locked down, or if you can help at all. He said the phone does turn on still. Also, I'm on AT&T, so I don't know if this is even possible with verizon, because I know you have to activate the device with them, not just pop in a sim card.
I know that for my captivate I could just use a program to flash back to stock software so long as I could get into download mode, and that removes locks on my device. I'm wondering if any of you could point me in the right direction with a link to a thread or something that could help me get the phone up and running for my friend.

He should bring the phone to the police department, or perhaps return it to Verizon Wireless. You'd think that they would be able to determine the previous owner based on the MEID.

I'd have to agree with that. Funny story is this... I was talking to an trooper today on my way home and he was telling me about a Verizon phone that was brought to the barracks earlier this week and they've been calling the numbers in the phone to let the owner know where the phone is and no one returned their calls. So today they called Verizon and said they have a phone that was found and delivered to their barracks and wanted to get in contact with the owner. Verizon will not give them any of the owners information which is fine IMO due to privacy policies and it's not something that was involved in a crime. What DOES kinda bother me and I don't understand is this.... Not only will they not release anything to the police about who the owner of the phone is... They also will not take any information from the police and contact the owner themselves to let the owner know where their phone is..
How did you call the numbers on the phone if it is locked down?

Lol! I didn't even think of that until I read your post but that's a very good point.
To the op your friend should take the phone to a corporate Verizon store or the police (I recommend the police personally.) Even if he didn't "steal" the phone it is still stolen property. If you find a wallet you don't have the right to keep it just because someone else lost it, by law you have to turn it in with all of the contents in place. Besides, it was probably reported lost/stolen which means it can't even be activated.

You could just run the phone off wifi so the phone could essentially work (texting and calling can now be made over wifi using certain apps) Im going to be the bad person here, if its locked down by a password or pattern lock or an app, boot into recovery and wipe data, will factory reset the phone. I cant remember if the Eris has Recovery mode stock, try it. Press and hold Volume down and end button, youll go to a white screen, press volume up to boot into "recovery." Once it boots into recovery, (black screen with green lettering) use the trackball to go to the "wipe" option-select with trackball. Select "Wipe data". then press volume down to return to the main menu, reboot phone. If it doesnt have recovery, search around here for a way to flash recovery onto it, should be as simple as downloading the correct file, place on sd card (using computer) and booting phone by pressing volume down+end key, the phone should automatically find the file and run it.
For the record I agree with everyone else. Find a way to return the phone. Give it to the police or Verizon. Im just answering your question cause I need a 10th post to post in the dev area
what kind of lock down is the phone in?

[Q] Bypass SIM Activation Android 3.2 - 4G LTE

Hey guys,
In an attempt to root my 10.1 Verizon 4g LTE, I ended up deleting stuff and resetting everything. Now it asks for SIM activation.
I have been Tabless for a few days now and need to fix this asap
Do you guys have any other idea how to bypass the SIM activation?
Thanks for the help.
PS. I do not have a SIM card.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

pleaaaz.
It would help if you actually posted this with an explination of what you did step by step. We cant help if we dont know what you did....
In all the LTE flashing I've done thus far I haven't had an issue like this on my tab. Then again I've never tried flashing any other ROMs than those identified as specific for this tab either (which basically amounts to just the liquidspeed one and the leaked 3.2).
At this point it's not clear if you're on a restored stock ROM or you're using something else since as Tdiliplane pointed out you haven't provided enough information.
More info
Thanks for looking into it. Here is more info:
I have Galaxy Tab 10.1, Verizon 4g LTE version. A couple of weeks ago it updated itself to Android 3.2. I tried rooting it so I could install TouchScreenTune.
Not sure what went wrong, but I was not able to connect to wifi. I decided to do a factory reset.
When the tab restarted, it asked for the sim card. The problem is that I don't have a sim card and I would like to just bypass this message and use the tab as a wifi device.
I read in this forum and others that pushing volume up and down combination or touching the four corners + volume up bypasses the sim card prompt, but this did not work for me.
I hope this helps.
Thanks
Ok now that makes sense and I'm not sure how to help you.
You're basically on stock Verizon ROM right now and it sounds like it's going through the default setup scripts when it's booting up since you did a factory reset.
Maybe one of the other guys out there that has this tab without SIM can chime in, personally I have a data plan so I'm of no help. I'm wondering if flashing one of the stock ROMs for the verizon tab from this site via odin would be helpful or if those too are going to ask for a SIM card.

Well, this may sound obvious, but any chance you have a Verizon 4G phone with a micro sim or know someone that does? I've swapped my RAZR micro with my tablet from time to time without issue. As far as I can tell the tablet only goes through the SIM Activation on first setup/new ROM. Once the activation check is done you can run the tablet without the SIM even inserted... I've done that too... just using WiFi instead... just to see what would happen if I decide to cancel VZW services.

... nope, I have ATT on my phone, I tried usiing but it didn't work... and I don't know anyone who used verision 4G... I will probably go to a verizon store to see what they say.
This is just weird.
I went to a Verison store. They were really nice. The gave me a new card! they wanted to help by I had to leave. So I came back home inserted the card, about 10 minutes later it says: "There is a problem activaiting your tablet. Please restart and try again, or contact customer service."
I restarted a million time in vain.
The Sim card they gave you may not have been activated or linked to an active account...

I got it to work. I WAS able to bypass the activation message by tapping the four corners of the SCREEN + volume up. The first time I read about this the guy said touch the top left corner, right corner.... of the tab. Ignorant me, I was touching the external corners of the tab. Till I re-read detials of this method on another forum that explicitly says touch the )(*&^^%%$$#@@@ screen.
Anyway, thank you guys for you help.

LMAO!! Well I'm glad you kept trying and got that all sorted.
i have one - and have original sim but device stuck on please wait while your tablet is prepared and dont go to next screen , combination bottom left e.t.с dont working on any official firmware
It worked for me on stock ROM. Are you tapping the corners of the screen or the edges outside of the screen. My mistakes is that I was tapping outside the frame, the metal parts.
Please, I really desperatelly need an advice on this , I bought a used Gtab 10.1 LTE from ebay and since I got it I cant bypass the activation screen , don have sim either to activate it. I tried the four corners plus volume up but nothing happens ... Paid $400 for a useless tablet I belive it comes with stock android but not sure as I cant get to the info screen. Can somebody upload a video showing the activation bypass process ? I think I am doing it well tapping on the four corners of the SCREEN (not the frame) , top left, top right , bottom left (as if i tap back android control), bottom right (as if I tap on the battery status) and then press volume up once, but it only ends increasing the volume ....
Any help is so much appreciated. Thanks!

i have the same problem
Well , never found an easy way (aka secret code or buttons combination) to bypass activation screen on this thing. What I had to to is to root the device, then oppening settings tab with help of the phisycal OEM keyboard then going to about tablet/legal information/open code licences and selecting any text from there then from the upper menu select web search so you get to the web browser so you can google for Home Manager apk , install it and run it, now just select launcher from the app (make sure to set ti as default) and it will get you straight to the home screen where you can now access all device's features and menus but there is still a last step, go to the play store, search for and install titanium backup and freeze or remove UICCActivation process so it wont ever asks for activation again (unless you restore your tab again) and you will be able to fully use your unactivated tablet now. If someone finds an easier method for bypassing activation on this model on android 3.2+ would be great to have it posted here.

Galaxy SIII flashed to Cricket - cant send mms & more

Hi, I can see that this has been a problem for many users but darned if I can find anywhere that the question has been answered. The one answer that I did find said to download the Android Messaging app from the Playstore. I immediately went to do just that only to see that the app doesn't handle mms anymore. My phone is not rooted, and I'm really terrified to do that. I don't think I can root it anyway, see issue number 3 below.
I bought this phone Christmas 2012 and went with Verizon. We've recently moved and I changed my provider to Cricket. I went to a general cell phone store and they flashed the phone. Since then I've had a few issues. I'm really afraid to root my phone and would rather not have to go that route. Even though this phone is giving me problems, it's still far better than my previous phone, a Huawei Ascend.
First, I can't send pictures. I can receive them just fine, but when I try to send pictures the whole text fails to send, not just the pics. Also, I have to keep any text messages basically within the little window that you type in. If my message is longer than that (I don't know how many characters) then the receiver only sees what has been described as jibberish. So, even though it drives me batty, I have to send texts like "R U NE were near us? Hw mch longer will U B?" Or, instead of "I wanted to go to Kroger but had to got o Walmart instead" I write "at Wally's, hate it here!" arg.... I'm a word/grammar/English nut, shortening my words like that is really irritating.
I've tried the regular stock messaging app, GoSMS, Chomp, Handcent and something else, I can't remember off the top of my head what it was. Apparently it's not the app that's causing the issue. I've tried turning off wifi and just using the cell data, which didnt work.
Second, I am constantly getting a popup message that basically says Please wait while we prepare this application for it's first use. I can't get out of it while it's doing that, I just have to wait for the error message to appear.
Third, for some reason I can not connect my phone to my laptop so that I can back it up. My phone will charge while it's plugged into the USB port, so I know it's connected, but I can't see the phone on my laptop or the laptop on my phone. I've installed, uninstalled and re-installed the Samsung SIII drivers for Windows. I've tried Kies on my desktop, but it wont connect, neither by USB nor wireless. I can get to Kies Air, but I can't figure out how to do a backup from that angle. I've also tried Helium, which tells me to connect my device. This issue is a little worrisome, because sooner or later, I'm really going to wish I had my backed up!
I also have 2 questions ... since I'm not on Verizon any longer, are there any of the Verizon stock apps that I can safely uninstall, without damaging my phone? And, an sd card. I remember on my Ascend I could take out the sd card (at least, I think that's what it was!!) and put it into an adapter thing I bought, then plug that into my computer and do backups, etc that way. I can't figure out if this phone even has an sd card that I can take out like that. I dont see that any of my apps are available to move to the sd card, and the option to mount the sd card is greyed out, so do I even have one?
In spite of these problems, I really do love this phone. It is so much better than my previous phone, a Huawei Ascend. It sure would be nice if these issues could be fixed though, so here I am. Your help is appreciated, thank you in advance!!!

There's been some views but no replies. It's only been a day and we're heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, so perhaps people have other things to do that are keeping them away from the forums. I'm moving back to San Diego this weekend, so I completely understand being busy! I'll keep checking back, cuz if there's one thing that I know, I am not gonna stump xda-developers. Found Samsung A51, did a hard reset, but original owner's lock is on it

I'm currently working at a sandwich joint in Garden Grove, near my house, and there was this Samsung A51 phone that has been there for over 8 months now, apparently someone left it in the bathroom awhile back and never came back to claim it, so the manager challenged everyone to unlock it, whoever unlocks it, keeps it, simple ja? Well, it was a 3 x 3 dot lock, and there are over 200,000 answers to crack it, so he gave it to me because everyone gave up on attempting to unlock it. Upon bringing it home, I erased the entire data, in case I might unlock it and accidently stumble upon the previous owner's data. I then went around on Youtube on how to unlock it (since the original owner's Sprint SIM card is still on there, and his/her pin), and I got nothing. So now, I'm left with a clean phone with the previous owner's lock on it, and I'm trying to unlock it so I can clean off their data so I can claim it (Since I could use a new phone anyway), note, I've already did a hard reset on it, so there is no trace of the original owner's data on it except their pin and gmail on it. Is there anyway I can unlock it, and 100 percent clean it so I can claim it? Thanks
-Nguyen
I'm not going to help you unlock that. Maybe someone else will? I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but here's my 2¢ about this.
Personally I wouldn't keep the phone, and I definitely wouldn't try activating it. If the original owner reported it stolen, then police will be knocking on your door within a few hours of trying to activate it. The honest thing to do, and what someone should've done 8 months ago, is turn the phone over to a Sprint store. They would've been able to contact the owner and get it back to them. The owner probably didn't come looking for it because they didn't remember that they left it there, or it was stolen from them. I also think it's really sh*tty to wipe someone else's device. Very important information or irreplaceable data could've been on it. Not everyone backs up their data on a regular basis. Again, I'm really not trying to give you a hard time. I understand why you did it, and I've been guilty of doing the same in my younger years. I just want you to know, there's much better ways to handle this kind of thing in the future.

Eaiser said than done. I'm gonna return it though, knowing the fact the police wouldn't knock on my door, considering the manager left it on for awhile and everyone attempting to unlock it already, now then, how do I explain to them I wiped out one of their phone's hard drive clean? I tell them I found it like that or sumthin?

I wouldn't say anything. Just drop it off and say that it was left at your work. They only know as much as you tell them. ;-)

Okay, one more thing before I actually give it to them, awhile back, I put on my gmail as an attempt to link it with the phone, and once I realized nothing can be done, I did a hard reset, any way my gmail is still linked to the phone, or its still clean without any traces of my info on it?
