Kernals - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone tell me what kernals are good for both speed and good battery life??
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

It's really all a matter of preference!! There are a ton to choose from. I would say try a few and find what works best for you. I am using Bionix 1.3.1 with the KB1 + voodoo and it's great. Search the stickies on the android development section for different kernels. you can flash just the kernel. I have heard a lot of people have good experience with ka5 and ka7 with voodoo. Good luck!!
BTW...it's kernel not kernal. common mistake. : )

the best i can tell you is to get bionix-v-1.3.1 And Then Install Dead_Horse_221 Kernel...Thats The Best Combination....The Baterry And Data Is Grat..Gps Too...I tested mah Self...If Any Question Ask Me...There Are Some Things Yuh Need To Know if yuh wanna flash the Dead Horse Kernel...

I'm running the latest bionix with overstock. I only have edge where I live currently so that helps. My batteryleft widget reports near 40hrs of charge after 3 cycles
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I'm enjoying Bionix 1.3.1 w/overstock. I THINK there might be a better kernel out for battery but this combo has really made me happy and the batterylife isn't horrible, definitely manageable.

I have used All the roms and kernels. It really is preference
As far as kernels Dead horse and Overstock seem to work the best.
As far as roms, my experience has the roms as Axura, Trigger, and Bionix in that order as best. But you should try all out and find out for yourself

My stats are certainly a little biased. My phone stays forced on EDGE/2G only and because I am on campus nearly all day it stays in my pocket with the data turned off (XDA SuperPower) and it is scheduled to come on every 2 hours for 5 minutes to sync my data if I do not have it up and out for an extended period of time.
My normal use is also pretty sub-standard at maybe a few hours of browsing/streaming and listening to various scanners. If I really need to use data I just use WiFi from my home or campus.
As for ROMs I've tried the main ones you see on the Dev page (Axura, Trigger and Bionix-V) and they all have their ups and downs. I personally like TW's ROMs but would not hesitate to use the others for a change of pace (Trigger gave me a few wonky issues when running it with Dragon however).
Either way if you treat your phone nicely, the battery should return the favor assuming no funny hardware or app usage issues.

Best battery life.

Alright, I'm on the quest for the ultimate rom. Specifically for battery life, but I want a good honeycomb or even honeybread mix with good/great battery life. Im getting decent battery life with Nero v5.

These battery life questions are being asked all the time. Try looking around the forums a little bit and see what people have to say.

All the ROMs you will find will have the same BASE battery life (since they are ALL based on Samsung code [except CM of course, which has worse battery life as of right now]). Here are the factors that DO affect it:
apps
gps/bluetooth/wifi
low signal
kernel
Obviously the biggest eater is the screen. No matter what you do, you'll get a max of around 2 hours display time (that is, 120m of the display being turned on).
The next eater is data. Apps that refresh themselves in the background are notorious for eating battery life. Twitter apps, facebook, or widgets that update automatically are the first thing to look out for. I believe they all default to automatically updating or something.
And if you use the stock voodoo kernel, that will give you the best battery life out of all kernels available.
I get about 4 hours of display being on with the lowest brightness setting. Stock battery, 2 hours is very low.
Yeah I have the brightness as low as possible. Im only getting 15 hours, and I've heard rumors of up to 20 hours with some roms. Any body know any good gingerbread mods with good life?
Sent from my sexy vibrant running the ancient nero v5
White's version of gb will give you better life. CM7 is 12-14 hours with poor standby time.
Best battery life will always be axura.

if you want battery.. Its always been either axura or nero/bionix
Battery life is entirely too subjective a topic to get hard data from.
- People running different roms
- People running different kernels
- People running different modems
- People running different background services
- People knowingly or unknowingly running apps that create excessive partial wake usage. Or not running them as the case may be
- People with widely differing signal levels, which vary from area to area
- People with different screen preferences (insofar as brightness, auto brightness, animations etc...)
- People with Vibrants a month old and Vibrants nearly a year old. (i.e differences in battery degredation)
The only way to get a quantitative set of real data to work with would be to painstakingly eliminate all the above variables per case, which would mean (at this point) dozens or even hundreds of dedicated test scenarios.
I've recently ran Bionix, Bionix Frost, Trigger, Sweet Honey, Atriarc, and Darkys (yeah I get bored a lot...sue me ). I've yet to notice a significant enough degree of difference between any of these in regards to battery life, running the stock apps and services I always run. Enough to notice? Perhaps so, but only if I were going through my day with a stopwatch (which would seem a bit anal). Enough to care? No.
I'd rather just use my phone and say "screw you guys I'm going home!"

super noob question, will the themes involve the tv turn off into sleep mode? or is that a bigger form, like kernal etc.

Nope.
Any 2.2 or 2.2.1 build will never have that its integrated into gingerbread and as far as I know you cant just copy and paste..
But there are alternatives such as a app someone made that locks your phone using the search button and shows the tv out animation
It really just depends on how you treat your phone, I text a lot, and only check xda and I get about at least 19 hours Stock kernel, and now I'm trying out Tigersblood kernel, and I undervolted my cpu clocks, and set setcpu profiles in Setcpu, and downloaded Superpower from the market (turns off data when screen is off) and monitor about every other week which apps I installed are eating my battery (if any) using System monitor, and I should atleast get about a couple more hours ;]

what is the major differenece between this 3 ROM and which one do you like?

I used to be on Bionix 1.3.1 / bali 1.8.3/ KB1. I want something that is fast in data, battery and gps just like everyone. I keep flashing all the ROMS but still not finding to my needs.
I kind of like Bionix Next Gen/ trigger 3.2 / and Galaxy Extreme. I want your advice on what is the major difference between each ROM. I live in Chicago and want to know what kernal and modem is good if you are from that area.
If you even tell me what you use and what combination of kernel and modem, and why that would be greatly apericiated.
Than you in advance.
Bi winning v2 getting 5 to 7 mbps dl and about 1mbps ul . Also in chi

Whatever rom you use, just make sure you use dragonmodz ssj v. 1 undervolting kernel. In addition to that, use juice defender.
I promise you, you will get at least 14 hours on a single charge. My wife just got 1 day and 10 hours with 40% still on her battery.
Let me know how you make out.

i use to have bullet kernel with bi-winning but revert to the one that came with the rom. idk but my phone feels like a hand warmer with bullet i also use juicedefender highly recommend . get about 15 to 20 hours of heavy use and about 25 to 30+ moderate.
Thank you guys, what if I don't use juice defender. And what modem do you use and specially in chicago. I dont want to overclock my phone because it can do more harm to my phone.
Thank You
I use Bi-Winning V2 with the bali kernel and KA7 modem. It works really well for me but then again I'm not in Chicago lol.
try trigger 3.2 kb5 modem roughly about 14+ hours moderate to heavy use. or bi-winning with kb1 roughly about 13+hours . kb1 for me is faster than kb5 in chi

You don't have to use juice defender but by having it, it essentially shuts off your internet when your screen is off and not being used anyway (my intervals for turning it on are in 1/2 hours). I'm currently using KB1 which has excellent battery life and internet speeds. I tried KB5 and didn't notice much difference so I decided to revert back to KB1. Shouldn't make a terrible difference though.
Download the free version of juice defender and see how good of battery it gives you without changing your current configuration. You might be surprised...
i'm trying trigger 3.2 with KB5 modem and its great on DATA and GPS. Dont know about the battery because I'am still calabrating my battery.

battery is what i need!

Ok guys, Lately i haven't cared about battery because its summer and im home all the time so if battery's low, i charge... but now its different.
School starts in a few weeks over here in Texas. More importantly, my Football camp starts TOMORROW. I won't need a 48 hour lasting battery, but i do want one that will last me no problem to maximum 16 hours, i dont need anything more.
I currently have CM7 glitch kernel kb5.
My phone is usually on standby. If CM7 had a great standby battery i'd stick, but it doesn't...
The most i use my phone is..
A couple calls, no more than 5 a day, 100 texts maybe more a day, and games but you guys dont have to count the games, I play games at home, I don't play games while algebra is going
So just a good ROM, with amazing battery life specifically on standby.
Obviously most of the choices i have will be Froyo based roms, but I guess thats okay for now, im not looking for anything "spontaneous" just a good rom, battery life, i dont want some funky theme on it either. just a simple one.
got any suggestions? Name away
Also if you're using or have experienced the rom your suggesting, try to give me more info on what kernel you used if it was different than stock, what modem etc.

I suggest Project V. It runs smooth and snappy. I've never had any issues (at least nothing I haven't caused myself), have gotten great battery life and since installing Bali my battery life has been f***ing awesome.
I think you have at least a partial answer to your question: three different posters recommending three different roms but we all agree that you should be using the Bali kernel.
It's all in my signature. I've used all of the ROMs listed so far, and Toxic's has been my favorite by far. Love the near endless stream of themes that come from the group besides all the great tweaks.
I've easily gotten 48hrs with light use, or 5hrs of nonstop gaming.
I was just about to ask this. Im on Revolution rom and ill get about 6-7 hours with moderate usage. Not the best but ehh its entertaining. But back on track i too would like to know what rom has good battery life

Just run any 2.2 rom with overstock. Have a sleep profile of 400/100 and use superpower (free) from the market and have it not turn on the mobile network for 2 hours and let it run for 1 min. Use startup manager to kill all the unnecessary apps that want to run and be done with it. It requires some work on your part but well worth it. Do note you can really cause problems for yourself by doing what I suggest by one mistep, you might not have any cellular signal at all. But I can tell you the battery savings are great. I work at a factory 12 hours a day and I leave there with 50%. This is also in an area that just barely gets edge. Every ones phones are constantly trying to grab a signal and dying.... but mine I'm working on the new Simply honey JVR right now and after a few days once it gets settled ill post a little picture in the battery thread.
I'm going to suggest bi-winning V3. I'm running it with the kernel that came with and get great battery life. I turned my phone at 10 am with 100% battery at 10 pm with several phone calls, some texts, checked the market for updates I was at 80%. I've read that some people have used Bali kernel undervolted and are getting even better. But honestly dude, bi winning runs so good and is so smooth that I just can't bring myself to change anything about it.
Bi-winning V3
if you don't care about the thickness/weight of your vibrant, could get a bigger battery..
mobimega makes one that works

Bi winning seems to be in the lead and I shall try that out! With Bali
Thanks guys really helped me
Going to football practice now. Cya
Excellent choice my good man!! You shall not be disappointed!!
I'm currently on CM7 Trigger Redux and I can tell you that battery life only lasts around 15 hrs depending on usage. I usually just check my email, check the time every now and then, put in a few texts, and some randoms. I can tell you that Bionix 1.3.1 was a lot better but you couldn't really do much with the Bionix. On average, I would get 18+ hours. I have been told that any GB or Froyo bootloader ROMs would usually always have better battery life than CM7 just because of the system files CM7 uses.
So you dont have to stop using ur phone like its meant to be, buy a couple of cheap $4 batteries and a cheap $3.50. battery charger from ebay like that u have a fresh battery when ur about to go dead. That's what I do cuz I got tired of killing this, freeze that, install this, uninstall that, lower this. ....u get my point. I use my phone like its meant to be. I listen to music all day at work with my bluetooth earbuds and on my breaks I play a game, browse the web, watch something on netflix, etc. without having to worry about battery life cuz I'll just pop in a fresh charged one when needed. I keep a battery at work, home, and car. No matter what ROM ur using with whatever kernel or tweak applied ur still gonna kill ur battery fast watching a video or playing a HD game. If I have to limit myself doing those things than whats the point of having a phone that could do all that if ur gonna be worrying about battery life all the time. Don't get those extended ones that will make your phone fatter in your pocket and hard to get a case for, just to add about 50%-70% more life for about $20-$30 when you could get 3 regular $4 batteries that will hold as much charge as ur OEM battery. No matter what brand name they have, they all come from the same place (i.e. China) anyways so who cares if that's where they come from. They worked fine for me.
Get the extra batteries. Trust me.
.....aaaand NO! My theme is not just funky....its Blutiful.

i have tried many roms on mine and i find team whiskeys nero 5/voodoo to be the best with battery life. no wifi calling support though but excellent rom.
I can confirm that Bi-Winning 3.0 does an incredible job in battery life. Bionix also does a good job but I feel the battery lasts longer with Bi-Winning. I'm probably going to be testing Toxic battery life soon just because theres more things to customize.

most economical rom?

Hey guys I love all these custom ROM's but honestly the battery gets drained so fast it takes the fun out of it. I was wondering if there was any specific ROMs that were easier on the battery>?? The only feature I truly use on these things is the wifi tether, other than that I don't care if the phone is a litte slower etc, i just want to be able to make it a day on 1 battery..TIA
I can easily make it a full day with the PowerWashed 2.0b3. Yet I also have Juice Defender Ultimate installed.
Ill be quite honest, gingerbread is not what its cracked up to be imo... I have found that powerwashed 1.2 ed05 froyo w/ pbj 0808 kernal is one of the most stable roms out there. Im getting between 1.5-2% percent battery drain per hr. That means I go 2 days without charging the phone with normal use. Heavy use such as browsing the internet for a couple hrs and sending dozens of texts usually equates to charging the battery once a day or slightly better. The only issue is not all fascinates play nice with the -100 undervolt that the pbj kernal has built in. If thats the case, then just run the otb fusion kernal that come with pw 1.2...battery life is still good(2.5% per hr) and you can overclock with that kernal, but truthfully overclocking does not really improve much imo.
Wow thanks guys! Yea I am on MIUI and its horrible.. I will look into the ROMs you guys suggested..thanks!
vanilla gb is insane. running with the glitch 9/15 kernel, undervolted, smartass, noop and usas tweak applied, simply the fastest rom i've ever used battery is also holding up really well, but I have the naztech 2400 installed just yesterday, so battery should only get better with more charges. pwgb is also really good, but the file system is still samsung rfs, which is really slow. Pw froyo is probably the better choice for most people with pbjt kernel which has voodoo. Ill stick with vgb and see how battery does and if it doest yield me 6hrs of screen on time ill switch back to pw froyo and see how it does.

Im not sure why he did that... Its a very functional rom and is up to date as much as it needs to be. Read my guide, uses that rom for an example on how to install a froyo rom. You are not limited to what your base band shows, you can flash 2.3.4 gingerbread roms if u like,, but they still have a few minor bugs. Actually 2.2.2 pw 1.2 ed05 is the most functional rom up to date imo... everything lse still has minor bugs to work out.

Stay away from rom manager!!!! It only works for the mtd based roms such as cm7, miui, aosp... even then odin is a much more reliable way to work with the fascinate. imo just get use to the fact that your going to have to use odin most of the time when flashing.

And cmon guys stop tagging this post as span n other **** I am new to this all new android stuff and I see people with effin 3 days of battery life while in 100% mine only lasts for 8 hours.
Be more serious.
So, did you read up on how they were getting it? (3 effin days battery)
Have you then tried the same thing?
Checkrom revoHD.
Well for me checkrom revo HD with leoMar kitchen app is simply the best. This combined with Dark Knights Siyah kernal is the best combinition for me. I get a full day of battery charge with heavy usage.

This will depend on so many variables, network, location, Modem, ROM, Kernel, user installs of software, wake locks, bad signal.......
Hence the only way to find is via flashing bedding testing....
As you will notice users can have same setup but very different outcomes..
Using CWM backup you can always revert to stable setup.
