Hello! I am new to this forum. I have a Samsung Vibrant (SGH-T959), which I successfully upgraded to Froyo.UVKA6. How do I upgrade further, to Gingerbread (Android 2.3)? I tried to Root my phone using that one-click rooting program, but I guess I was doing something wrong, and it didn't work (three times). Thank you for your response.
No official 2.3 yet
and no stable 2.3 (?) for normal daily use yet

he said "no official 2.3" CM7 isn't official but i suggest the OP tries out CM7 its fast, a few bugs, that will be fixed by the dev team, but besides that... its great!
Since there was a samsung gingerbread leak for i9000 a few days ago. I imagine we will see a vibrant leak soon.

Thank you for replying to my post! I'm not sure how to get what you suggested. Would you please give me step-by-step instructions? (I am relatively new to this whole thing.)

With All due respect, perhaps you should just stick to 2.2 for now. While CM7 is a semi-viable option it is a bit more complex than flashing many of the more "standard" 2.2 roms.
Be patient, there are many custom roms you could look into that will surely boost your phones potential greatly while you wait for 2.3 builds to grow and develop.
Try out Bionix Version 1.3 (I believe) or Trigger 2.7. Those are my personal favorites. Right Now I am using a 2.2.1 Rom called Sweet Honey, which is great, but I haven't had enough time with it to give a proper judgment.
Look at the more stable options first, get used to things, learn how to use Odin, about download mode, the different recoveries, even about jigs (if needed); before you dive head first into this cesspool of amazing roms, kernels, themes and talented developers. There's a lot of options that are far less likely to brick your phone.
This thread is a good way to start.

Don:t use the Gingerbread leak! It could ruin your SD card! I recommend Community ROM 2.1 or Evil Fascination 3.6.0.

As for the actual question, why not try jt's CM7? It's very stable and I've been using it without issue. Though it does have the same bugs as the MIUI ROM.

Okay, I guess I wasn't clear in my last response to you so let me rephrase what I said in that other thread:
There is no good reason whatsoever to use DJ05. Even if you want to run Eclair, it's still outdated.
Why you'd choose Eclair over Froyo (or Gingerbread, if you don't mind some problems) is a mystery to me, but again, even if you want to run 2.1 instead of 2.2 or 2.3 DJ05 is the wrong choice.
EDIT: Also, as the above poster hinted at, please do read the stickied posts, particularly this one about posting in the wrong section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038478
Can someone tell me the best GB rom out there and how to root it and stuff? Sorry I'm such a noob at this. I only have experience in jailbreaking lol
The best GB rom is the one that your phone responds to the best. Try em all once you get root. Theres a ton of tutorials on rooting. Read in the Development section for which way you feel comfy doing. There are one click rooters and then you can do it manually.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081930 Start here.
^^ good list of choices for roms/kernels/radios but if you're not even rooted yet, you will definitely need to check the Ref/Guide page out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013013
Here is how to root, just follow along and everything will work perfectly. If you have problems hit up IRC or check out a couple video's on youtube to help you along.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616
As for the best rom, it is best for you to check them out, download a couple that look interesting to you (be sure to read on how to flash a rom/radio/kernel) and then try each one out for a couple days and see which one you like best.

I have rooted and un-rooted a couple of times and have found it best to be rooted. so much more freedom. I have my doubts about how much good the OTA updates actually do. A couple of patches/fixes and it will still be buggy. just my two cents...
bamf 2.1 hands down.

I've tried a bunch of the roms. The bamf 3 rc4 was my favorite for the first few days. It was very fast and I really liked some of the unique things they did.
I'm using Gingertheory now. It's similar to the bamf, but it even has more loaded in things so you can mod the layout real easy. I finally feel like I have a unique phone, and not just a rooted rom.
I loaded up about 10 roms in 2 days, so it doesn't take long once you figure it out.

Same with this guy. The Das Bamf 3.0 RC4 was awesome. little buggy, like i couldn't make phone calls to specific people, but others i could. Gingertheory = complete awesomeness. and it is crazy fast too.
Current rom: Gingertheory 4.5.1 soon 5.0
Try 'em all.
Just make sure to do a nandroid backup (through clockwork recovery mode) after any ROM you like.
And...
Do not use ROM Manager or Kernal Manager to flash anything.
Use Clockwork recovery....most developers will tell you the same.
What's up guys. I need some help picking the best ROM for me. I know there's tons of them on here, by I'm a novice to Android, and honestly don't even really get te difference between firmware and a ROM. I want some very specific feature which is also why I made this thread seeking your help.
I'm an old iPhone user.. did all the jailbreaking and all myself and even though I think the TB is better than my old iPhone I would love to incorporate some of the "fluidity" it had. Specifically I'm looking a ROM that wouldn't interrupt my music when I get a text to play to notification sound, instead play it on top of the song playing at the moment. I would also like to initiate access the play/pause skip buttons without having to unlock my TB, like double pressing the home button on an iPhone and the play buttons pop up even if you weren't playing any music.
The last and most important to me would be this one: on the iPhone there is a security option that if you have a password set and let's say the phone is stolen and someone tries unlocking the phone more than an allowed number of times(set by the user) it erases EVERYTHING on the phone. These are all I can think off right now. Like I said, I'm a novice to Android and I will appreciate any help and advice I can get. I already had my TB rooted but I just updated the verizon firmware on my TB not knowing that it would un-root it.. so I'm trying to find a ROM ASAP.
Thanks
Edit: I would also like to make my TB run on gingerbread and improve the battery life.
I suggest BAMF roms. I'd give you the website link but I may get banned for it.

It's really about trying them out for yourself. Alot of what you want is available through apps. Not even sure you need to root.
As far as bamf ROMs, they decided to leave xda but if you google them, you should find them.
XDA does not like you linking other sites that do the same thing.
I suggest them because they ate always updating their roms, they have a good group of people happy to assist you, and the roms are just really well done. Chingy does great work too. But apparently posting to another forum gets you banned these days. Google "Team BAMF". :-]

it is against the rules on xda, and its their site.
OP, I've been using gingertheory, which is a gb rom with a hybrid sense of 3.0 and 2.1. Very smooth and fast. The same dev also makes a senseless version of GB that is very light and you can add custom lockscreen to that can have audio controls.

The one that fits your needs the best, which may or may not reflect the opinions of those in the thread. In short, you need to research and/or try many different ones. The lazy way of asking others won't give you the best results.
Synergy is my favorite. I've tried CM7, BAMF 3.0, Gingertheory, Injectedtheory, and Tesla Coil.
CM7 was my second fav, but Synergy was just farther ahead in development. They are doing nightlys now and things are very smooth. Running on the newest leaked GB base and radio, and it runs on ziggys kernel, which seems to be second to none.

Now that Netflix has officially come out for the Thunderbolt, I am sticking with the official MR2 ROM that is the same as stock but rooted and deodexed. All of the apps I want to run work fine plus I have root for things like Titanium, LBE Privacy Guard, SetCPU and VNC so I see no reason to change. I was considering it for Netflix but since that works fine there is no need to. Perhaps when the other roms have stable releases rather than just nightlies/betas/RCs I will switch to a custom rom.

Do you...
[] Find something and see what sticks and wait till the next update?
[] Flash the newest thing that available?
[] Flash the one with the most replies in a thread?
[] Google and cross reference the info here with Google and then pick one and stay with it
[] Not care and do your flashes an a whim?
[] Run stock and just come here to see whats out and convince yourself to root?
I try to flash the newest thing available and mess with it before returning to what's tried and true like ShoStock.
*If any mod see's this please be kind and turn it into a poll. Thanks*
with the captivate, I found myself flashing something every couple days because it was very slow and unreliable. With this phone, its so fast and reliable that I generally stick with what I have until the next update. But occasionally, I'll get the itch to flash something different so that happens once in a while, too.
I've tried all the ROMS to see which one I like best. Once I find the one that works for me that becomes my default as a nandroid backup.
If a new ROM comes out and it's stable then i try it and see how good it is. Same with Kernels
See my current config on my sig below

I miss that like crazy, but iOS is one version while we have thousands of roms and phones.
There is some universal themes in the i9100 section, it was posted somewhere here but not everything worked correctly.
Still running manually debloated Hellraised VillainROM 3. I usually only flash other stuff to confirm/reproduce bugs with said other stuff.
I, of course, am flashing kernels all the time, most of which never go beyond my phone. Less often lately as I try to come up with test cases for the regression I'm hunting.

Longtime XDA flasher here. I've recently moved on to the GSIII and am going to be giving my beloved Vibrant to my 65-year-old Mom, who wants a touchscreen phone for easier dialing (LOL). She will not be using a data plan, so no need for working GPS, etc.
I'm looking for the most stable, fastest (without bloat) ROM available that will not cause me frustration when getting calls from her asking what a "force close" is!
Right now, I've got Chimera v1 on there. I was thinking of reverting back to maybe GB or even Froyo, but I really haven't kept up with the development in the past few months. So, any suggestions? Thanks!

I would definitely pick Bionix V 1.3.1 as one of the choices. That rom is amazing. I would definitely not go with ICS or JB since both are still developing and have bugs here and there. GB is kind of unstable. I would find a nice, stable Froyo ROM :good:

I think that froyo would be your best bet,
There a quite a few stable roms to choose from in that department.
Something from Fish is always an awesome bet
bionix 1.3.1 BUT, there's a further development on it, its fishman's or fishmod Bionix 1.3.1. It is the most stable Vibrant rom, ever, imo.

Agreed.
Even though ICS/JB is much faster and newer, froyo/gb is pretty simple and easy to use, less settings to mess around with, and its more basic to use than the newer versions. I had quite a though time just changing most of the settings in JB but in froyo/gb, it was much easier.
Being a smartphone, it can tough for even older people to use, but the only thing shes probably would need it how to use the touch-buttons, how to make a call, how to unlock the screen, and your good. Goodluck!
Stick with a 2.2 rom, don't want to leave mom with a phone that won't call 911.
