[Q] How to flash the OverStock v1.3 - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys,
I have problems about flashing the Kernel like OverStock v1.3, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967861
I am using Bionix -1.3.1 now, I just reboot into the clockwork recovery, it said that I need the Red Recovery, so if it is red words clockwork recovery, so it will work?
I just put the Kernel file into the sdcard and install like a rom?
Should I disable the Voodoo? If I need to disable the voodoo, after install the new Kernel should I enable the Voodoo again?
Thanks guys!

Yes, you need red recovery for OverStock. You don't need to disable Voodoo to flash OS, but it won't hurt to either. Reboot into Red Recovery from your modified power menu (long press pwr button), select Install zip from sdcard, then choose Select zip, then navigate to the OS zip (which must be at the root of your internal sdcard, not in a downloads our other folder, nor on the external_sd), then choose Yes. It shouldn't take more than a minute or two, and then it will say the file had been installed successfully, then you choose Go Back, and then Reboot Phone Now.
This is all recalled from my swiss cheese brain, so if the selections don't match verbatim, choose the one most likely to have been what I meant.
As always, there's potential for things to go horribly wrong, and you can end up with a shiney paper weight flashing stuff, so please thank me now before you brick your phone and change your mind.
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick I like to pretend is running Trigger 2.7 on OverStock 1.3...

I would only add I would disable voodoo, you don't have to but it does lower risk of potential problems.

I'm kind of reckless with other people's stuff, so I wouldn't suggest that at all.
Seriously though, I have heard that not disabling VooDoo, even when it says you don't have to, does increase your chances of trouble. But on the flip side, it speeds the process up so freakin much I'm convinced that I can flash, brick, Odin, and flash again in the time it takes to disable voodoo, flash, re-enable voodoo. (j/k)

I personally flash between overstock and kb1+voodoo on a regular basis and never disable voodoo and have not had a problem yet,but then again i dont have hardly any of the problem most seem to get with flashing and if i do.....i oden. I cant say weather its becuz i pay attention to details or if i get more luck than others

Step by Step guide to installing a Rom

After seeing the 20th question on "why am I getting a verification error", I thought a guide for new users would be helpful. So, here it is.
First, you need to be rooted. Instructions are in every forum. No offense, but if you can't do that, don't try to change your phone yet.
Next, install Clockwork. Instructions are here: Clockword mod installation. It takes awhile, so be patient.
IMPORTANT: When you are using Odin, DO NOT PUSH THE PHONE BUTTON! ONLY USE THE PDA BUTTON OR WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!!!!
Download the Rom you wish to use, I've been on this one for several days, and it is really smooth. jt1134's Superclean D01
Plug you phone in to your usb cable, attached to your PC. Mount the sd card, put the downloaded Rom on to the card, and unmount the sd card.
Boot in to recovery. You can either use Rom manager to boot directly in to Clockwork,(Download from the Market) or turn your phone off, hold the volume up and volume down buttons in, and press the power button until the Samsung logo appears. Use the volume buttons to move to the "apply sdcard:update.zip" line, and push the home button. That will get you in to Clockwork.
When in Clockwork, if you push the home button, the screen shuts off. Just push it again to turn it back on. Use the power button in Clockwork to select your choice.
Use the volume buttons to scroll to "install zip from sdcard". Press power.
Go to "choose zip from sdcard". Press power.
Scroll to the rom zip you just put on you sd card. Press power. Scroll to "yes" and press power again.
The rom will install, and you will go back to the short menu screen. Scroll to "go back". You will be at the main menu with "reboot now" highlighted. Press power, and wait for the phone to reboot. It takes awhile for the first boot as the new Rom installs.
Presto! You have a new Rom!
If you want to install a voodoo kernel, follow the same steps to install it, except the install takes longer, and the phone talks to you.
If you to change Roms and have a voodoo kernel installed, disable it,Instructions in the first post, flash a stock kernel,Stock kernel(Thanks adrynalyne!), flash your new Rom, then flash the voodoo kernel again.
is the stock kernel really a stock kernel though? I compared it with the "Odin Restore files to get you to stock" thread and the data doesn't match up.
Nonetheless, thanks for this excellent write-up!
It doesn't have voodoo, which is all we need.
This should be a sticky!!
Do you really need to flash a non-voodoo kernel to switch between ROMs? I haven't left jt's Super Clean, but I kinda feel like doing anything more than disabling tge lagfix is overkill. I could just be outright wrong, though.

So far I've flashed and re-flashed several different roms. I've never used a stock rom in between. Maybe I've just been lucky but, for the most part, I haven't had any serious problems. I'm interested to hear others' experiences.

Nandroid backup question

I noticed something since i updated to JI6 while using Clockwork recovery. while on JFD i was able to do a backup using the following steps:
HOW TO MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP *ALWAYS BACKUP BEFORE YOU FLASH A NEW ROM
1 - Open Rom Manager
2 - Click on Flash Clockwork Recovery (you can skip this if you have already flashed the recovery before)
3 - Click on "Reboot Into Recovery"
4 - At the prompt, click "ok" to reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery
5 - If this is your first time, you may be at the stock recovery on the Vibrant. Thats normal. Click on "reinstall packages" (ALSO: Volume up and down navigate, and power is used to select an item).
6 - Now, you are at ClockworkMod's Recovery. Scroll down (volume down), to "Nandroid" and select it (power button).
7 - Click on Backup. It will run it's course. After it finishes just reboot.
8 - You now have something you can always fall back on in case you F up. Thank Koush and all the testers.
Now when i tried to do a backup on JI6 i no longer see Nandriod option all i see is "backup and restore". is this normal? has anyone else noticed this? will impact the backup/restore process?
That might not be a JI6 thing. Koush just updated rom manager. Thats most likely the reason.

clockworkmod 2.5.1.2
when i select "check for rom updates" it says that i am not set for OTA and i need to contact dev.
Your all good bro! Thats the same version Im running and I just checked, I dont have NANDROID anymore either. That was all part of the recent update I guess.
As for the second question, ROM updates is talking about the actual ROM the phone runs off of, You know like ECLAIR 2.1, or Eugenes or Sombionix's roms. Not the ROM manager APP. The APP will let you know when it needs to be updated, it checks what version you are running versus what the latest version availible is everytime you open it.

what about flashing to a old clockworkmod? or is there no need to? i just want to make sure that when i backup i will not have any issues if i need to restore..
one more Q. any particular way to name the backups? i know there is not that much room to be specific with the name.

well answer my own question, i reflashed clockwork to 2.5.1.1 & 2.5.1.0 and the nandroid option still does not come up only "backup & restore"....
anyone on the best way to name your backups? not that much room to be specific.
if you choose to back up from ROM manager you can name it whatever you want. Just go into Rom manager, tap backup current rom, when the little box pops up click it and change the name to whatever you want. It will automatically boot into clockwork mod and take care of the back up for you. let it finish, patience is critical whenever flashing anything or backing anything up. And your done. You will now have a complete backup you can use when the going gets tough. Are you running a stock vibrant?

Dont worry, you wont screw anything up, all four of those choices wipe everything and flash a kernel. My suggestion is to flash bionix1.9.1 with JAC's OC/UV kernal. its pretty sweet. Stay away from voodoo right now. No offense, but your not ready yet. VOODOO really can F*%k your stuff up if you dont disable it before flashing other stuff. Trust me, once you start flashing you will never be happy! LOL Thats how i started.
The best thing you can do is read read read. Then when you think your ready, READ some more. If you ever need help feel free to pm me. Im always on. Sorry I didnt even look at your sig. And HAPPY FLASHING BRO!

No need to disable lagfix it will get wiped and reformatted. However I did see a way to do it, but i dont use them so i dont know how its done. The whole point of backing up is so you can get back to where you were in case something goes wrong or yu dont like what you see. As far as one click lag fix (OCLF) and voodoo go, its like night and day. VOODOO is INSANELY fast. ALL THE TIME. but they are truely different approaches at the same goal. But for now i reccomend you stay away from voodoo.

Vibrant doesnt want to load rom (AXURA)

I installed for first time AXURA rom with Vodoo Lagfix..
It booted fine, and everything was good (sign, data, fast, stable)
But I always like to format both my internal and external SD Card when I flash a new rom, so I did.. and also I went to recovery and wiped all user data.
Now when I turn on the Vibrant, it shows the initial screen (Vibrant - Samsung) and then it load the boot up animation, but anything more happens...
Is normal to have to wait, was good to format and wipe having Voodoo Lagfix enabled? or did I mess everything? I can get to recovery mode.. But I want to learn if I did something wrong? What should I do now

it certainly sounds like wiping with voodoo running may have caused it, but im not entirely sure.
thats the only downside to running voodoo, is that its so damn touchy. ive learned (the hard way, many times) to pretty much disable voodoo before doing ANYTHING on my phone, in order to avoid problems like this.
you are going to have to reflash Axura and start from scratch. if that doesnt work, youll have to ODIN back to true stock 2.1, and then flash your ROM of choice.
Dont mess with Voodoo magic..........

This should have an "IF" at the end of it. Because you SHOULD mess with the voodoo if you want a faster phone. You just need to play carefully with it and disable before flashing (unless what you are flashing is also voodoo).

If you wipe after flashing it's not doing anything for you especially since Axura wipes during install. If anything, by not wiping first there may be something still stuck in there that affected the flash of the Rom.
I would boot into CW and re-flash Axura. When it's done just hit reboot and wait for it to load up.

[Q] Did I brick my phone while flashing Minimal Green Theme ?

hi,
I have a rooted eris with the tazz v28 rom installed and followed the 1 click guide [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228] to root my phone a few months back [this uses adb, I belive].
Today, I was following the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913839 to install the minimal green theme on my eris.
I downloaded the minimal-green-updated.zip file theme [posted in the OP of the minimal green theme thread], put it in my sd card's root folder, rebooted my eris into recovery, then flashed that zip in recovery and rebooted.
[In retrospect, I didn't do a full wipe or davlik cache wipe, because I thought it wasn't necessary because this was a theme, not a rom].
Upon rebooting, my phone comes to a screen with the HTC logo and the little guy dancing around [no skateboard]. This dancing sequence continually repeats itself.
I'm really hoping I did not brick my eris. How can I revert back to my nand backup that I made yesterday or fix this situation ?

how to go back to your nand.
1. pull battery
2. place battery back in
3. hold vol down
4. while holding vol down, press and hold power button
5. should see white screen
6. press vol up for recovery
7. should see recovery menu
8. go to the restore option on the menu
9. restore from your nand (i believe the exact menu selections from this point vary based on which recovery you have)
this should get you back to where you were prior to flash. good job with the nandroid prior to flash. other should be able to help with where the flash went wrong. if it doesnt work, post back here.
edit: was the theme designed for froyo? does the md5sum of your file match the original file posted? either could lead to a bad flash. although it may have to do with not wiping. not really my specialty though. oh yeah that's right, i don't have any specialty...lol. hope it helps.

Thanks for the quick help !
I'm relatively sure the theme was designed for froyo. After reading the replies in that thread, [after I flashed the theme] I think I may have needed to first use another application to make the .zip flashable.
I followed your instructions and when I tried to restore the nand backup, I received the following:
Code:
error: run 'nandroid mobile.sh restore' via adb!
Also, my battery was relatively low [20%] when I flashed the theme... is it ok if I charge it right now ?
yes. you need to turn charge it now. note: it will not charge while in recovery, but should charge when powered off. this is why it is a good habit to only flash on a full charge. let me know right away if the charge light does not come on when it is powered off.
edit: do you still have the flashable tazz v28 on your sd card. if so, you can wipe data and cache and reflash it. if it is not on your card, you should be able to mount your card via usb in recovery and add the tazz v28 to the root of the sd and then flash from there.

i believe the minimum for some things such as running an ruu is 30%. it might be the same for nandroid, but it is best to do on a full charge, that way if something more serious does happen, you have some time to try to fix it. there are some ways to "jumper" your battery if it dies during a flash, but they arent fun.
just making sure, the charge light is on now correct? also, are you using amon ra recovery or clockwork? if you don't know, don't turn on you phone to check, i am just checking because once your phone is back up and running, you may want to get amon if you have clockwork, it does a better job of checking the integrity before flashing.

Charge light is on and I'm 99% sure it's amon_ra . I specifically recall that, before rooting my phone reading that one of those two recoveries was buggy with eris and I purposefully avoided using that one.

alright, good stuff. when your phone charges, go back into recovery, go to backup restore, nand restore and see if you can. if not, if you have the tazz rom on your phone, go to the main menu, wipe, wipe data and dalvik, back to main menu, flash zip from sd card, flash it. if it is not on your card, plug phone into your computer, from main menu of recovery select usb-ms toggle, this will allow you to access your sd from your computer, place the flashable zip on the sd, then follow the above instructions. just post back if you end up needing any more help.
I just tried to restore my nand backup and it worked. Looks like it's all smooth sailing here. =)

You would need to flash a kernel that has VooDoo sound in it...like:
Categorically Worthless (which is what i'm using)
Dead Horse
OverStock 1.4
Destroyer of Worlds (DoW14)
Dragon
I'm not really sure if they work on stock ROMs...they might but idk.....i see very few people on stock these days...but those are the kernels that will get you VooDoo sound, color and lagfix.
I recommend OverStock 1.4. But Categorically Worthless is just as good. Dragon is quite a stable OC kernel, in my opinion, but you know what OC means, you could end up with problems. Lastly, stay away from Dead Horse and DoW for now if you're not advanced.
Im gonna use this kernal http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967861..... Which is the OverStock 1.4. How do I load it on my phone. I'm rooted with superoneclick. Can I use baywolf's vibrant toolbox? Once I get the kernal loaded and my phone rebooted can I use supercurio's voodoo market app?

Ok...honestly i have no experience w/ stock 2.2 as i've been running custom ROMs since i got my Vibrant.....but i'll tell you the steps anyway as if you're on 2.1......anyone feel free to correct me...but here goes:
1. Download and install ROM Manager for the market
2. Open ROM Manager and select the top option Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
3. Select Vibrant when asked and let it do its thing...when its done hit "Reboot into recovery"
4. When you do you should get sent to the stock recovery screen....hit "reinstall packages" and it should reboot
5. When it comes back up it should send you to ClockworkMod Recovery, if it doesnt then hit re install packages again and it should send you straight there.
Now that you have ClockworkMod Recovery you can flash the kernel...should be self-explanatory if you read the directions on the kernel's thread....i still suggest you do a bit more research before you do this...especially since you're on stock 2.2...also make a Nandroid (Full System Backup) before you try anything and have Odin ready....stuff happens...hope it helps and good luck
I'm running a voodoo injected stock froyo kernel, I seem to get better battery over Overstock or Categorically Worthless
The instructions say to use red recovery, do I just place the ziped kernal on my sd card?

I backup my kernel using SGS Kernel Flasher and then flash a new kernel from clockwork recovery. Red Recovery means voodoo is already installed, CWM recovery is green by default. I'm not real sure what all it takes to run voodoo on a stock rom

red recovery is just a VooDoo injected version of clockworkmod....when you flash your Overstock or whatever yours will be red too....also....expect a robotic woman to start talking to you when after you flash your kernel....its Linda activating the VooDoo lagfix...

Pretty much only but the kernel on your internal sd,
download the app to backup your kernel
reboot into recovery (assuming you already have clockwork recovery installed)
install zip from sd card
choose zip to install
scroll down til you find it
choose it then scroll down to yes
it'll do some magic and then you'll be at recovery again, reboot and wait for linda to do her magic, takes about 5 minutes.
Doesnt rooting install clockworkrecovery, if not do I install it from the market place. What if I have other items on my sd card like music, pictures etc. I have 6GB left on my sd card. Once installed what is BLN and do I have to get an app for that. And can I use the voodoo market app after install kernal?
Yes you download Rom manager from the market, run it, let it check, if all good install the very top choice flash clockwork recovery.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

Once you have ClockwordMod Recovery, which is green by default I believe, flash a Voodoo-injected kernel using the methods other people described, and you will have a red ClockwordMod Recovery. Red is to indicate that the phone has Voodoo lagfix enabled.
