SGS2 to have USB OTG? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't believe my eyes but the specs page on Samsung's website says it has USB OTG!!!!!!!!!!! I can finally use my portable DAC with this beast!
Check under Connectivity
galaxys2.samsungmobile.com/html/specification.html

That's great news for us audiophiles; I actually just sold my UM3Xs to help find for new stiff (the galaxy2 mainly) . I don't really listen to music that much anymore though.

my Fiio E7 USB DAC is also happy for it!
I just need to find short USB mini to micro cable.

Sorry if this might be a n00b question, but I don't seem to be clear on the subject. Will this allow for me to attach a usb harddrive or usb-stick as add-on storage via a usb-micro-usb connector?
Thanks

Yes, it should work providing the microUSB port can provide enough power to drive your HDD (or if it comes with an adaptor).
I remember having USB OTG on one of my Cowon players and it made life so much simpler when I wanted to copy somebody's music over to my player, or pictures from a camera. Only question is, what kind of devices will Samsung give us support for (I guess once they give out the kernel sources this should become less of an issue).

Guess it will provide an easy way to add much more storage to the phone without having to swap multiple memory cards

^That never occured to me, I'm really excited now. Being able to hook up a hard drive or something to copy a movie or two over before a long trip is a plus.

Wait does it have a microusb or full one

It's micro. Being the world's thinnest smartphone, it doesn't really make sense to have a full USB port does it.

SGS2 isn't the world's thinnest smartphone. I read an article on Engadget saying a recently released Japanese phone is.

Fine, I'll concede that. Let me rephrase: Being an extremely thin smartphone, it doesn't really make sense to have a full USB port does it.

Yea, there's this 2.2 Android phone coming out that is a couple of tenths of a mm thimbleful; however, there are things called set points which are the minimum points where we can discern differences. I think 8 mm give or take a tenth reaches that.

will this also allow for usb Kb or mouse ?

Possibly, but the phone should already support BT keyboard and mouse anyways, which is much more convenient.

Yes it has

you are talking like everything is possible with x10(like quadcore).not that i dont like to have HDMI,but its very very unlikly
(dont get me wrong brother)
Anyone know any dev to show him this?....
Every dev most likely already "thought" about this many times, but this is a dream, it could be possible to get somehow a video output using usb or even the phone connector, yes it would be possible, but that would be a very poor output, because they would have to remap somehow a software encoder inside the phone to redirect data using USB or phone connector and connected in the usb or phone would have to be an adapter that would again translate the information in some vga, A/V, RGB, or at max S-Video, nothing like HDMI could ever happen as there is no such hardware for this built inside x10.
Don't dream on this guys, this is not like something that you can build on drivers.
Here goes an example of things that may be developed in future for x10:
Mass storage like pen drive(connecting a pen drive in the phone directly)
Mouse, keyboard and other input stuf.
Further undervolt and overclocks.
Multitouch, real multitouch(no dual touch as it is now with axis issue)
This may be developed sooner, and only maybe...
HDMI is too far from possible, not impossible though, but yet they would have to find a hardware in the phone to use for that which i don't really know if there is such a thing in x10, but i doubt.
@ all dev...
Is it possible to use USB OTG...?? like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224676
Or
Live Dock support for x10??
any hope..
This would be amazing but highly unlikely. I just don't think the X10 has the necessary hardware to push HD video out of the USB controller. The only thing I would add is there is a HDMI section in the Service Menu. I don't know if that would help us but it's a place to start.
@xpaa thanks for the interesting link.
My wife's Samsung Infuse 4G came with the hdmi adapter and my first thought was, "How the heck would you get HDMI speed out of a USB anyway?"
i also try so many ways to share my videos and photos on TV via Hdmi out .. even i found some suitable cables for X10 which was selling for that aims. try to search vivaz audio video cable , it is working like output from audio jack , in vivaz it shows videos but in x10 only audio no video , but it is possible via Wi fi share photos and videos on TV
About Live Dock to regret it doesnt support X10 ( only neo , arc , arc s , pro ) as i know

Dock with USB OTG & Charging

Hi All,
I now have the Atrix with lapdock and it's really useful for travel in that I get a small lightweight system without having to lug a company issue laptop. I'd hoped to replace it with Note and a small hub to allow me to use my HDD to move files from say the HDD to my phone or to another USB drive in case I have to give another person files, etc.
Does anyone know if this is available for the Int'l Note?
Been looking but haven't seen much. I could buy a mini powered USB hub I guess but a dock would be nicer. AND if the hub had say 3 or 4 USB ports then I could plug mouse, kbd, hdd, and have one open port. BUT, that's so messy and half/ass looking. Plus I would have to prop up the Note to either type on screen or use a keyboard.
This is about as close as I can think of. http://www.spider-foot.com/battery-...ng-galaxy-note-n7000-i9220-i92h5e-p-1125.html

You can get a OTG adapter cable for your GNote which allows you to upload and download files, picts, video, music etc to a thumb drive to and from the GNote. I got mine from Amazon for like $3.50 or so. It has a micro USB to hook up to the phone and a USB for the thumb drive. I have not seen much luck on using the cable with a HDD, and I have not tried.

Any further info on this dock? Did it receive it yet and are you happy with it? I bought the official samsung dock that is compatible with the AT&T Note but I have a slim case on it so the Micro USB port didn't reach far enough! This one looks nice but it probably has the same issue with a thin case preventing a good contact with the micro USB port.

Ubuntu on docked dual core Androids coming soon!

Really hoping to have this setup on my sg2 when its released. Basicly you dock your phone to a monitor, KB, mouse, speakers, etc.. then you boot up Ubuntu on your phone. Only for dual core phones. Well, hmm, how would the dock work now... Is it for phones that already have a docking capability like the Atrix that now will have an Ubuntu alternative, or; will Samsung and other manufacturers make these docks so that their users can dock and use Ubuntu, or; will Ubuntu make a somewhat universal dock using the microUSB for example, which then spreads out into mice/keyboard/display. Overall, I'm just trying to see whether or not we're going to be included.

initially at least it didn't seem like this is going to come for us, right now it looks like the work they've done with the Atrix is mostly just to change webtop application that it normally runs with and I think I saw that it was only for devices with micro USB and hdmi output
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
Yeah, the HDMI thing lost my hope a bit, but I think our phones do have a way to output via HDMI, or at least, my point is, a dock could be made to support the GS2 if someone were to make it. But yeah, the line:
Easy to integrate with existing Android phones in development

Confuses me as it sounds like it can be easily integrable, but at the same time, I just really don't know. We'll see what happens, I guess...
The SGH-I777 does have an MHL port, just like the GT-I9100 and the Infuse - it just, for whatever reason, didn't come with an adapter in the box like the Infuse did.
So if we can output to a TV/Monitor via HDMI and MHL we could use the slick web top type application?
I wonder if this will be downloaded-able as an "App" or will need to be more built in to the framework/rom itself (seems more likely). Very exciting though, to have desktop capabilities on a phone would be awesome.
Plus the exynos running on our phone would be much smoother than the Tegra 2 running on the Atrix.
any news? when will be this ubuntu solution available?
Give that this is from Feb, think its safe to say no news. Lets try to avoid necro-bumping threads like this...

Using an external camera with 4.0

Basically, I want to connect a Microsoft webcam to my SGP 4.0, and probably using a custom made .apk, just record the video from the webcam. No preview display or anything.
My plan so far is to wait until TeamSuperNova finishes their ICS for the 4.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1712668
And I already have the webcam and I ordered a USB host-mode cable from Amazon (not sure if I would still need that with ICS though).
So the plan is to connect the webcam to the 4.0 with the cable, but I'm just curious if you guys think it'll work, or if any experiments have already been done in this field. I have seen the video of a webcam running on the Nexus, but I really dont care about a preview, just recording. Imagine the most ghetto Go-Pro possible, that's what I'm shooting for.
Thanks guys

Make sure you can get it working with desktop Linux. That'll give you the added benefit of knowing what driver it needs. From there you can find/port a program that'll read your /dev/video* devices, something like gstreamer, ffmpeg, mencoder, or an Andriod app.

Because Android is a Linux system, though the userspace is mostly different. You don't necessarily need to have a Linux system, but I imagine it'd be harder to do Android work on another system. Though chances are good that you'd be able to do it on another kind of UNIX, such as Mac OS X being the most popular.

You can find out what driver you need (if it exists) from the camera's datasheet and some Googling. If you want to test it on a more well known platform before you test it on the device, that platform would be an x86_64 linux. It's just a good refernce is all, and would come in handy in case the plug and pray method doesn't work.
Those commands only coincidentally take the name of their project, of which I was referring. See:

yeah i got the OTG cable too, and it didnt work with the 4.0, but I believe thats because its not getting powered due to the 4.0 not having true 4.0 host mode, which powers the usb, so either i splice in the required 3-5v in the usb line or i wait for Team SuperNova to complete their port of CM9 (4.0.4) for my player (the 5.0 actually already has it so you should be good to go).

I tried it on my 5.0 running my CM9 rom, but no luck. I'm not sure if the player series supports USB Host seeing as the GT-I9000 does not have this feature. As far as I'm aware, USB Host started appearing on devices in the same generation as the GT-I9100 so about a year later.
EDIT:
USB Host appears to be a kernel feature:

The new HDHR4 should be coming soon (they said mid 2013 at CES), it is a network dual tuner that connects to your wireless router via ethernet ... you can then access the tuners on many different devices.
The new version is said to have a native android app, hardware transcoding and DLNA.. I can't wait, i will be buying it on day one.

Well the biggest problem with that app is that it only supports Android 3.1, at least that's what it says in the description.
There is a TVMan app that seems to have good reviews but I don't know if you can use it with any dvb-t stick and I don't really know much about dvb-t sticks...

It states only for 3.1 in English, that's what I read it in the first time, hence my comment. I find it very odd that he has yet to update the app to at least 4.0 if it works in any way. The only positive review he had was when the guy tested it at his house, when he went to work (where he wanted to use it mainly) it didn't work because he had to forward ports (I think that's what he said) and even then it still didn't fully function. It seems really really sketchy to me.

No, he didn't delete it. He jacked the price up to $6.50 and changed the name of it so he could get rid of those negative reviews and sucker people into buying his app. It wouldn't surprise me of he has done this several times before. Here is his new link:

I am considering reporting him, I don't like to make a fuss but it was obvious his app was **** and didn't work at all and noe he has changed it to get rid of the reviews so he can make more money on people who don't know any better.
Edit:
Now it has changed from the app only supporting "android 3.1" ,which there was no 3.1 only 3.0, to only supporting kernel version 3.10.

Definitely not a trust worthy dev, you're right.
I wonder how people can try this in 15mn allowed by Google, he has not even a demo version, and if he change name of his app refund will be hard to get ! Not a good bet in long term, he will rip fews people maybe but negative review will come back sooner or later.
no problem for reporting him as he isn't honest.

I did a bit of thinking after my initial pay and deleted him. I explained everything thoroughly so hopefully Google will do something. It would help if other people reputed him as well. I hate to see people lose their hard earned money to some scam artist.

DTV would be good but isn't having loads of wires defeating the object of have a small, lightweight portable unit? Out of curiosity I'd like to try with my USB DVB-T tuner but I don't think it's something I'd use all the time.
I set up a Mediaportal Server running from my main NAS which has a Dual DVB-S2 tuner. With a little messing I now have full live TV on the tablet anywhere. I got the 16GB wifi version so I use my phones 3G for it when I'm out and about. I also set up a web server running from the same backend that links into my Movie and TV show database. With Dolphin and the Flash plugin, you can get Live TV, Video, TV Shows and Music from your home server/NAS in a browser. The easiest way is to set up Mediaportal and MPextend, then just use aMPdroid on the tablet. It's not a 5 minute set up by no means but worth it in the end.

I have a Nova TD USB but I've not tried this direct in the tablet. My live TV comes via my NAS server.

Ah, gotcha.
Do you have any plans to test the USB stick in your XTZ?

Oh yes I'll try at some point. Trying to find a driver that will run it will be the hard part. Maybe when the CM people and Ubuntu really start digging into these devices we may get a working one but up to now I've had no luck. I have a few old USB types to try so I'm not limited to Hauppauge.
I must repeat what I said before though.. With the tools we have these days, there's no point in having bits hanging out of any wireless enabled device. The benefits just aren't there. I can get any UK channel on my tablet nigh on anywhere that has 3G if I wish. I don't worry about DVB-T/S signal strength as it's fed from my home aerial or dish. And as a bonus I get my film and TV collection too. From what you guys have said, you have the hardware and the software for both PC and Android is free so you might as well put it to use until it can be tested direct in the tablet.... Or that's the way I see it
I'll let you know if I find anything out and we will see if we can get one in the tablet running.
