What is the full size USB for? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering what can be done with the full size USB port. I've connected two cameras and my Droid X too it and none were recognized as mass storage devices. The only use I have found for it so far is that it can charge my phone. I would love to be able to be able plug in my camera (Sony, not SD card) and dump them on to it where ever I am for editing or uploading.
Thanks

Keyboards usually work right out of the box, so that can be a nice feature. Also, I think hard drives can be hooked up, but the tablet can't really power them, so they have to be connected via a powered hub. I think thumb drives/flash drives work as well, but I haven't tried them.
For me, being able to easily get a cheap, generic keyboard working has been a very nice feature of the tablet.

I believe I recall reading that you can use it for USB GPS receivers as well. I have not tried it myself.

ahhh a Keyboard, that would be a nice addition. Now that I think about it I am going to see if my bluetooth keyboard will work (don't have a USB one)
GPS is something I am missing more than I would have expected on a tablet

I have a 32gb thumb drive that works perfect. In fact, I have 5 thumb drives all with different data on them ranging from documents to videos.

That is what I use it for as well.

Anyone had success making USB controllers work for emulators? Seen the wiimote bluetooth setup, but I don't have a wiimote.

Interesting someone said that the USB port cant power usb devices, i connected my bluetooth gps to my usb port yesterday to see if it would power the gps, it did, so im not sure why we would think it does not power usb devices, as mine seems to be working fine.
Im setting my gtab up in my car and wanted to know if id need a second power souce for both the gtab and the gps. Seems to gtab will provide power to the bt gps ok.

It's not guaranteed to power them. Some 2.5" external drives and devices take a bit more than 1 USB slot can handle, even on laptops. Ever had a 2.5" external drive that randomly shows up or pops up then disappears? Also, ever seen a mini usb cable with 2 male USB connections? That's so that if the drive has issues using 1 port, you can plug another in and your devices will work. Even some flash drives at high capacity+speed may give trouble. There's def. the propensity for other usb devices to behave that way as well. Keyboards generally don't have that problem unless they're advanced (have lights, usb ports/hub on them), also mice don't generally have that issue either but anything else can.
What can work?
I'll say more than likely any powered external hard drive.
Some USB powered 2.5" external hard drives (my 320GB is seen and is usable, my 40GB is not as it is older and requires more power).
Most flash drives.
More than likely, any usb device engineered to worth within the constraints of using a single usb port (wireless controllers, remotes, mice, some keyboards, some gps units, etc.)
What probably won't work?
High capacity, high speed or OLD 2.5" usb powered external hard drive (750-1TB)
Advanced devices with a usb hub on them or lots of lights or moving parts, powered solely by the usb port
High capacity, high speed flash drives (though I'm sure this is vendor specific)

Interesting, so low powered devices will be usable, but not high powered ones, thats fair enough, both my bt gps and my fm transmitter seem to be working fine.
Ive ordered a 4 port usb hub which i planned to use to connect both the gps and the fm transmitter to the usb port to give them power, no biggie if it isnt able to do that, as i can use the hub elsewhere, but be interested now to see if it will work. Thanks for the heads up.

I also have an 'official Malata' USB to ethernet on the way for review to see if I can get it to work and see if there would be any interest for us in the States. I should have the demo today and will report back any findings?

IT2STEVE, I think you'll have takers on that USB->Ethernet adapter. I still stay at one hotel when traveling for work that does not have wireless (though most do). And sometimes at work, the wireless flakes out. This would be nice to have.

Have you tried tethering to your phone? I used my MyTouch 4g hotspot feature at two diners this past weekend and it worked well.

Wondering about the usb nic driver, is it provided with the usb nic ? or do we need someone to develop one ? Ive had a quick look on ebay and can see a few of these available, naturally none of them are official Malata' USB to ethernet. so that raises the question of using none Malata ones ?

I use it for a flash drive too.
The issue is that I copied mp3 from the flash drive to the g-tab..and when I use File Explorer I can see and play the songs, but in the Music app they dont show up.

320 external hard drive
Hello. I am looking to buy a 320 GB hard drive for my gtab. I am wanting to buy the Western Digital My passport essential. Do you think this will work with the USB on this device? It is usb powered. Thanks.

the tab usb will not power a standard hd

Anybody ever tried a USB TV Receiver? I'm doubting it would work, but would be cool...

I was looking to use the usb port to load pictures from my camera's sd cards via a card reader onto the tablet when I travel. Saves me from taking my laptop with me. I can do everything I need with a smaller device like a tablet now. (Might have to save them back on a flashdrive though in case the Gtab decides to delete your pictures...)
And I guess you can always use the the port for your USB Pet Rock. (thinkgeek.com/geektoys/cubegoodies/c208)

[webcam support] USB Host support that YOU can try (now in nightlies)

USB support and usb audio support were recently picked up by mainstream, so starting from nightly 135 you get all of the below (except for the webcam support). I am leaving the old information for history preservation purposes. The usb mode utility is replaced by Nook Tweaks
IMPORTANT! READ TO THE VERY END FIRST!
Ok, so I know some people want to try the usbhost mode and I am releasing this trial package to gather feedback and see how it works in the wild.
I am not responsible if you fry your nook (see below).
First, you need some hardware, namely microUSB to USB Female adapter. Something like this one. (There are cheaper ones on ebay, but delivery time is about 3 weeks, I got mine for $1.43).
Also an USB gender changer will work.
Then you need a kernel with usbhost enabled. I made a package that you can install onto emmc with CWM, or the same package could be installed on SD card if you use my installer. This package is only for CM7 users that already converted to .32 kernel. If you still run 2.6.29 kernel (ie CM7.0.3) - you need to upgrade to a fresh nightly like -87 or wait longer.
You can get the kernel here: http://nook.handhelds.ru/usbhost/update-CM7-green-usbhost-2-emmc.zip
As you probably know, the Nook Color comes a little bit crippled in a sense that id pin on the OTG controller is not connected and so we cannot rely on it to properly choose mode. Instead I wrote an app to achieve the switching.
The app is ugly as hell, sorry, it's my first attempt at writing an Android app, bear with me, it would become better (I accept free Android programming lessons too! ).
You can get the app here: http://nook.handhelds.ru/usbhost/NookUsbHostSwitcher.apk
The app requires root, so make sure to allow it once asked and make it to remember the setting.
Install the kernel, install the app.
Reboot into the new kernel.
Run the app and you'll see a big "ToggleButton". When it's in Off mode, that means your nook is in usb client mode.
When you press it for the first time it will change to On, that means usb host.
(you can connect your external accessory before or after you enable the host mode).
When you press it again, it will change to Off and switch back to the client mode.
I recommend that before switching the host mode off you first disconnect your accessory, otherwise the internal hub cannot switch off.
(note that in some configurations the host mode enabling did not work for me on the first try and I needed to turn it off and on several times before the device registered. I believe there is no such problem with this kernel, but keep in mind such a possibility)
Addition in v2:
A second button is now added that lets you to force "external" vbus source. When you make it to ON, the battery charger pump is opened and connected to vbus terminals. In this state it is safe to connect nook to a power source, usb host will work and the battery should be charging at the same time.
Even without external power if your battery has high enough voltage (usually when it's full for me), it still somewhat works.
Additionally if you try to enable HostMode and an external power source is connected already, the "external" power mode is enabled (not shown in the app, though). This is to avert a potential disaster from below and to save battery.
Now the important part: When the Nook is in host mode, it drives 5V vbus off the connector at all times. If you connect the nook to a PC in this state, the PC will try to drive it's own vbus. Last time I tried to do this, my usb port in the nook fried! You've been warned! But that was before I had the host mode working and it might have been caused by a number of other things I was doing at the time too. Anyway I am not very keen on repeating this experiment again. If you are curious and decide to try it anyway regardless of the warning, make a comment and tell me what happened
Supported devices (this is important, right?)
Note that only low power devices will work if you don't have an externally powered hub. Don't expect to be able to drive a cdrom or a hard drive out of just nook. 100mA is the current limit. (Current testing shows that if you use ISB hub, even unpowered, it hides this issue).
All keyboards should be supported. (the keymap in CM7 is a bit strange, though, you'll see it).
All mice should be supported too, though I have not tried.
I enabled Xbox and PS3 controllers support, but have not tried.
Usb camera support - I only enabled UVC-compliant cameras (Microsoft Live cameras are compliant for example, probably many others). You also need specially built nigthtly with videocam support (try Camera app).
USB storage - generic support enabled, so should work for you.
Serial port support - only generic support enabled (I guess GPS devices mostly work as serial ports)
USB audio support enabled - not sure if the Android has any idea how to support it.
The kernel is basically normal dalingrin's kernel with USB host support enabled and ipv6 disabled (to keep kernel size below 3M threshold).
Kernel source (for the curious and if you want to build your own kernel with some mode devices support): git://github.com/dalingrin/nook_kernel.git branch usbhost
Enjoy and share your experience.
Just ordered the adapter for this. Thanks so much for your efforts!
So if anything goes wrong, we can revert by just flashing Dalingrin's kernel again, right?
Going to order an adapter now
Quick (and possibly stupid) question: Would gender changer plugs work in combination with a regular micro USB->USB cable?
this is incredible, thanks for all your hard work !!!
Awesome news
Thanks for all your work on this. It just amazes me how much talent is here on XDA.
It also amazes me that Android tablets/phones struggle with something a 10+ year old Windows 98SE laptop can do with ease.
Ordered my cable and can't wait to try transferring pictures from my camera to the Nook!
Has anyone seen a netbook-style keyboard/case combo that would work with the nook? (Bluetooth and/or USB)
Great work man, can't wait to try this out!!
Just built cm7 from source as of 6AM and flashed your kernel, turned usb host on and attached my usb gender changer to my phone's micro usb cord and plugged in a mass storage device. dmesg in Terminal Emulator showed the device properly but apparently android has no idea what to do with it, the light didn't even come on. Encouraged by this minor sign of life, I plugged in a keyboard and it works (though of course the android keymap is close to full retard).
Good job! I think nullghost's idea of adding this to the CM7 pulldown menu is a good idea. Maybe also the power control?
You will need to mount the USB storage yourself.
Glad I though ahead and got an adapter
Working well so far. Will try more accessories at school!
Any advice on what adapter to buy? I was looking at this one:
http://www.amazon.com/USB-Micro-Ada...YMU6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306940268&sr=8-1
but not sure if it is what we are looking for since one review said it does not work for USB OTG.
Actually, thinking about it, is the USB host mode that is enabled here, different from the USB OTG that i am thinking of?
And since i dont mind being the first to ask a dumb question..

Would this be something done in the terminal, or through the settings UI (aka, it will show up on the same place that the SD card shows up)?
Using my mouse with my Nook at the moment
I went out and bought a gender changer, which seems to work. Thank you a LOT!
No luck with my Xbox 360 controller. It lights up and then keeps on blinking. I tried to assign hardware keys in FPse but it didn't respond to any keypresses.
Also, my Nook froze when plugging my mouse back in.
Dangit! How am I suppose to get any work done when you release something like this. Gonna have to run out and get a gender changer during lunch so I can play around with this!
Thank you verygreen!

OTG cable is only needed when hardware is supporting OTG mode natively.
All it does is has an extra connected pin. Nook ignores this signal unfortunately.

Nook cannot have fully automatic otg mode where you just plug an accessory and it works, then unplug, lug a host and it works.
Instead you need to manually control the mode from the provided app.
This is so awesome, if the nook can support a usb Ethernet adapter i'd be in heaven, I wouldn't have to lug around my Sony UX. Who has the best development community in the world? Nook does!

Thanks for the cable info - adapter is ordered.
As for the mass storage, i guess what i was asking in a round about way; what IS the proceedure to mount a USB flash stick (for instance) so that something like Root Explorer could see the files?
Personally, i am REALLY interested in this for my photography. I would love to be able to connect my nook in the field, and get a sneak peak at what my shots are looking like, without having to haul out a full on laptop. My camera connects as a mass storage device, so assuming that Android could read a mass storage volume, i would be in business.
I hate you guys! =( Always making me spend more money that I don't have! Now I need to go find a good solid case with a usb keyboard!

[Found] OTG hard Drive

Today, a friend asked if I had an extra laptop. He needed one for his 10 year old son.
While rummaging through my closet (you know, the one with all the old computers, shotguns, and half empty Jack Daniels bottles) when I found one of these.
Two Pics … http://db.tt/GY4wfof6 and http://db.tt/rzkodoMi
Now, I have no idea as to how, where or when I got this. I had to search the net to even know what it was.
Ebay link … http://www.ebay.com/itm/230328510631?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2648
Continuing my search of the closet I also found a 2.5 inch 160 gig IDE hard drive. Assembled the two and I now have a portable battery powered drive that works great with my Flyer.
That looks kinda old school. =)
So you connect to the flyer via bluetooth or microUSB?
It connects with microUSB.
Now that I’ve had a chance to use it a while I’ve found I can set its switch to PC or DC.
When set to PC I just plug it in to my Flyer and can copy files both ways.
When set to DC it will function as a standalone unit (because it has its own battery power). I can plug thumb drives and USB sdcard adaptors into it to move files both ways.
It will even plug into my camera and copy the pictures.
Kind of handy as the Flyer doesn’t supply power at its microUSB port to spin a hard drive.
It’s not what I call well built but seems to work.
At least it does the job! I didn't know we could use OTG harddrive for the flyer...
That's very cool. Vastly increases the number of movies I could take with me on a long trip!
ARRR
Ok so spent about £40 on one of these and it doesn't work with my Flyer(32GB WiFi 3G). Flyer is not rooted and running the latest official version of HC. I have tried both DC and PC but device still does not detect the OTG drive. My samsung mobile finds the device fine.
Are you using a standard micro usb cable ??

Yes using a standard micro usb cable
Try this ... Shut down your Flyer (make sure Fast Boot is unchecked in settings) then turn on your drive in DC mode and restart your Flyer.
Your Flyer should find it then and will work from then on.
Using your file explorer of choice you should see a new folder called USB
Hi, tried this but still no go. Ran a USB host and USB OGB diganostics app which still fail to detect the device. The drive works with my camera/Samsung phone and brothers PSP. May have to fork out for WIFI drive.
Still no go with the OTG device. Tried with a friends Flyer and same results. I am going to try this device, is fairly cheap.

I have an OTG cable from my samsung but this did not work. what OTG cable are you using? I gather you are connecting the USB device into the OTG cable via a powered hub?
Got it working but it's a hackjob, was going to root but having to downgrade then upgrade again was a pain and was not guaranteed to work. Tried running the OTG cable into a powered hub but for what ever reason would always come up USB device not recognised when plugging in any memory device. Tried 3 USB hubs with the same result. Ended up cutting up an OTG cable and a few other USB cables so I could provide power to the device and then power to the tablet as well. For whatever reason i need to provide power to he memory stick before plugging into tablet. I have tested 4 different memory pens and 1 external harddrive and they all work.
I just bought a generic OTG cable, its about 6 inches long. I think it may have come from HP. I have used both a powered hub and a y-usb hard drive cable and both worked for me.
You have to have power on the device before you plug it onto the FLyer so that on connect the Flyer software knows what type of device it is and can load the driver. Otherwise the Flyer will label it unknown and disable the device.
Managed to get USB on the go to work on my Jetstream. See the following post. as the flyer very similar, should work for flyer too.

Flash drive on USB Hub

Hi there.
I got my Galaxy S3 about 3 days ago and love almost everything about it.
I've been experimenting heavily with USB OTG, and it's such a great feature to have. I have got a Mouse, keyboard and USB flash drive all working over the USB OTG cable. I can also get the Mouse and Keyboard connected at the same time over a USB hub. However, USB flash drives refuse to work over a hub on USB OTG, even though they work directly from the phone to the USB. This is pretty confusing to me, considering two higher power devices work over the hub.
I've tried two different varieties of hub, both giving the same result and have also tried two flash drives. I'm using an un-powered hub and I honestly don't see how just because I'm using a hub the USB Flash drive isn't working. There is no way that it can have a higher power usage than a mouse/keyboard at the same time.
Just to note, I'm using the hub unpowered externally, it's going directly into the phone. I can't seem to find the power cable to try.
I have the UK (GSM) variant of the phone in blue and am running on the Stock 4.0.4 ICS firmware (i9300XXLF2) and haven't tried to root or anything.
Could someone suggest what might be the issue I'm having, or some things to try?
Thanks
Its a common IT issue that not everything works through a USB hub. Or even US extension cables.

It works through it regularly through a PC.
Both USB sticks. And I've seen a video of someone doing it on youtube. I've also tried both FAT32 and NTFS with the same result.
Can you explain your exact set up please?

Samsung galaxy S3 connected to a small unpowered USB 2.0 hub, via a standard USB OTG cable. Connected to the USB hub is a single USB flash drive of which I have tried a 16GB (14GB actual) stick formatted in FAT32 and a 128mb stick in FAT32. When I connect the OTG cable, it's recognised by the phone. I then attach the USB hub and nothing is recognised, but it is infact working. I can confirm that because I've tried both a mouse and keyboard separately and at the same time through the hub. I have tried another hub with the same result. I then unplug those and put in the flash drive, the red light on the flash drive flashes for a bit and then dies, nothing is picked up by the phone.
Is the hub connected to a PC or not?
Are you saying:
Flash > Hub > PC it works
Flash > hub > Galaxy it does not?
Dont forget a PC USB kicks out 500mA of power which is about the minimum a flash drive would need. If the PC is not supplying the power to the USB via the Hub, I doubt the galaxy could supply that much.
Can you power the hub using the PC?
Yes, that's what I'm saying.
The hub works with the galaxy, but USB through the hub does not. I can connect a Keyboard and Mouse (Both with lots of lights on them) at the same time to the hub on the galaxy which SURELY takes more power than a single USB.
Everything works through the hub on the pc, and most things work through the hub on the galaxy but not flash drives.
So:
Keyboard + Mouse > Hub > Galaxy it works
Flash Drive > Hub > Galaxy doesn't work.
That's why I'm so confused. And power is going to the flash drive, the light turns on and flashes for a while, but is not picked up by the galaxy. The usb flash drive also works under normal circumstances directly through the OTG cable.
Human input devices take next to no power. A USB flash drive needs More. I believe this is your issue as previously mentioned

Seriously?
How come I can't just use one USB on the hub then... I'm only plugging one device into the hub, surely that should just be extending it? Or does it constantly try to power all of the ports? Is there any way I can debug the USB port on the galaxy? Or even limit power to just 2 out of 4 ports?
EDIT: I just read that a micro usb port is generally rated for 500mA+, which explains why the usb works normally, is it just the fact that all of the ports are powered?
MicroUsb is rated for 0.5A, that's correct.
However Usb-to-go is not rated for any output power, only for a list of compatible devices.
It may or may not work with other normal Usb-Devices, and could even be damaged if the slave device uses too much power.
(Unlikely with highend-devices such as the S3)
LED's take next to no power, the keyboard too.
Modern (=optical) mice got some electronic but it's not really high either.
Usb-Hubs however take quita a bit of power and flash drives do so too (especially when erasing "overwriting" blocks).
You could try a powerd usb hub , there might even exist some with a battery pack.
If not, it shouldn't be too hard to strap a battery pack to a hub, however that makes it heavier, clunkier and requires charging...

If not, it shouldn't be too hard to strap a battery pack to a hub, however that makes it heavier, clunkier and requires charging...

Okay, that makes sense then.
The hub is tiny and that's the idea, if I could get a tiny battery that'd okay, just irritating really. To be honest, I could do with just two ports, it is just that I sometimes want to use my flash drive in conjunction with another device or something and it's yet another inconvenience to buy another hub.
I may buy a charging pack for my phone, because honestly the battery life is abysmal, do you reckon that I could hook that battery pack up to the hub? Although I don't see that working because the hub in question has a dedicated power input.
Is there a set up you think might work? The idea is to be able to connect some extra storage and keep it fairly compact so that I'm not lugging a load of extra crap around. The hub I'm planning to use is a tiny square, probably about 1.5inches large.
I love the idea of my phone being a mini computer, it really does do just about everything I want, that would make it even better.
EDIT: I've tried a 2 way female splitter, no success there either. I think what I'd really need is a bluetooth keyboard that I can connect to my phone, that also has a usb port I can connect a mouse to, so I can then plug in my stick and use a mouse+keyboard combo.

USB-C capabilities?? USBpens, HDD, HDMI etc??

Anyone who knows the capabilities of the USB-C port?? Is it possible to use USBpens, external harddrives, card-reader etc? And how about USB-C to HDMI, a seller in a store told me he did it with his m5... But I have my doubts to whether that was "salesmens talk"...
Don't have an M5 yet (tomorrow), but the Mate SE (micro usb) port can be used for many things people are not aware of. For many things all you need is an OTG cable (usb-c or micro to usb). I've plugged in usb thumb drives and even a wireless keyboard and mouse using a logitech unifying receiver (first set usb connection to midi).
A quick search turned this usb-c to hdmi adapter on amazon, looks like there are many different ones available. Have never tried this with any of my android devices, but if they make these adapters, well it certainly gives one hope that it *might* work, it certainly must in some circumstances.

I have a HDMI adapter I use for the Nintendo Switch (which also should work with Samsung devices) and that one doesn't work with my M5 8.4.
I also have a USB-C OTG adapter and a USB memory stick works, but I haven't yried anything else.
It doesn't appear that the M5 is capable of hdmi output. Mhl and slimport seem to be absent.
I used a USB c combo dongle , it had USB A female and sd card slot.
On holiday I used it to copy my gopro videos to ssd. It wasn't pushing usb 3 speeds and the system acts a little weird when it is plugged in - movies that are downloading on amazon or Google play would go to the ssd or sdcard plugged in from otg, even though I have an sdcard in the external asd slot

Weird, I've tried it with Hugo 2 / UAPP playing hi-res flac and it seems to work fine. I set it in bit perfect mode and the bit rate indicator LED showed the correct bitrate. I did have to try a couple of unplug/replug to get the tablet to do some permission requests. It also worked with Youtube and the default Android audio system - though I did have to stop UAPP kicking in.
USB C can power external hard drive, and ive got one of those USB to 2.5in adapters that powers a 1tb toshiba laptop drive and that's ok too, the tablet also give me the option to reverse charge, so i presume it is capable of high amp output on the port, maybe up to 1A or more
I've tried an USB type-c to hdmi cable and it doesn't work , the same cable works on a P20 Pro.
Yeah the USB port isn't working correctly. It's supposed to be USB 3.0, but i am copying at 18MB/s (onto an SD card capable of 100MB/s)
Confirmed with Huawei it's USB 2.0
Seriously dissapointed, and I know it sounds silly but this device isn't useful without USB 3.0, I have an action camera and hence I copy video to internal SD card. What use is a device if you can't input/output to it fast enough.

"Thank you for contacting Huawei Support.
The USB specification on the M5 tablet are:
HDM-Out does not work. I tried adding the necessary lines to the build.prop file as well with no success. Seems the hardware physically does not support MHL. We're stuck with MirrorShare which works pretty well.

Have same experience. Really regret buying high end Huawei M5 and then realised I could not use it with HDMI cable. Wireless projection is really lag!
For folks with slow USB data issues, it mat be that you need a powered hub for it to work optimally. I've had this issue with a few Android devices over the years.

USB OTG HUB and ANDROID AUTO

Hello Everyone. I have a Mazda 3 with Android Auto that does not natively support FLAC files. So I figured out a Solution where using Android Auto I am able to use MD Player to play the flac files on my phone. Now before anyone says that I am streaming over Bluetooth so it doesn't really matter. I am also able to go into my Mazda Bluetooth settings and Set Bluetooth to only be the source for Phone calls. This forces Android auto to send the Sound over USB. And there is a huge difference in Sound. For example over Bluetooth I have to crank up the sound to 3/4 to hear what I want while over USB Audio i get the same volume at 1/2. There is also a clear difference between Flac and MP3. Especially at higher volumes.
When I discovered I could do this I thought to myself let me order a USB C Hub, connect my Phone to the HUB, Get a USB male to USB male cable for Android Auto and a 256gb Thumb Drive to fill up with Flac Files. This is where my problems start. Connecting the 256gb Thumb Drive to Hub works perfectly, except that I have to use FAT 32 which is fine, since I wont be using this for movies. When I connect the Android Auto cable to the Hub though it does nothing I tried a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 cables to see if that would make a difference. I also tried using a USB OTG adapter without the HUB to see if that launches Android Auto and it does not work either. I tried using my old phone a Nexus 6p and it also did not work. So now I'm thinking Android Auto does not like USB OTG. Could this be Kernel Related? Or am I wrong to assume that something like this would even work on a Phone.
Additionally I bought a USB C powered hub so I can charge the phone while in the car. But when I connect power to the device it charges the phone just fine but it will no longer see the Thumb Drive. If I disconnect power it will not recognize the thumb drive until I restart. So far I have tried 3 hubs. The first one was the cheapest one I could find so I thought that could be the problem. I then tried another Hub I had lying around with the OTG Cable. This did nothing, finally I ordered a nice Anker Hub that works just fine with my wifes Macbook Air, but not with the phone. Any help or Guidance would be appreciated. I am open to installing a custom Kernel if this will solve the problem. Thank you.
Did you ever find a solution? Looking doing the same thing with my pixel 3 xl and either a thumb drive or ssd. I think it has to do with the way the otg cables are wired. The data pair might be the same for the drive as android auto. The otg cables dont have all pairs wired as a true y cable.
Thanks
