wifi suddenly stopped working. scans but no AP's found... - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running Uruk 0.7 on Archos 101 and it seems that my WIFI suddenly stopped working. When i go to Settings -> Wireless and enable WIFI it will begin to scan for networks, but it never finds anything. I've reinstalled Uruk and it doesn't help. On another android device I can scan and find two available AP's. If I go to Advanced, it reports the MAC address of the device.
I'm about ready to open this sucker up and make sure the antenna cable hasn't come loose.

If I'm right that the antenna is actually the black wire, then it seems that the physical solder points are good. It's a very flimsy wire. Photo is attached.

I have removed Developers edition and now went back to stock. WIFI is still not working. Any ideas?

Did you format and install the latest firmware?
I don't think the SDE or Uruk change the wifi layer of the OS. There are files that you can manually edit with SDE and root, wifisupplicant and twilan, that configure your wireless settings. If those files were changed or corrupted, then you'd need to format and install the latest archos firmware or use the SDE+Uruk to copy over new, correctly configured, files.
Of course it could be hardware related, but without a format, it is tough to say.

Did you try "forgetting" then reconnecting the network? Mine periodically does the same thing. The network is available and configured, but the tablet will scan and never connect. Forgetting and reconfiguring will fix it. I have one network that uses leap authentication, and it's a bit of a pain to set up. Last time I had to reset everything I made a backup copy of the wpa_supplicant file. Now when it quits working I just copy over the backup and it starts working again.

I have tried the forget network method, but I did reformat at reinstall the stock AOS file of 2.1.08. So now back to fully stock I would think that would have reset everything, including the wifi layer. Right?

As long as you did the full wipe and not just a reset, I would say so.

For me this black wire does not look like a wifi antenna.
as you reformatted your dev. did u ever uses the 10sec. power button reset funktion. maybe your hardware hangs. a resett may be helpfull. or just unplug the accu from mainboard and try to start. then replug the accu.
BUT DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! usually this does not harm your dev.
i cant guarantee...
Good luck!!!

The black wire probably works as neutral and grounding wire. I'm pretty sure that you won't find a loose cable, I guess your wifi-card died. If a format and (hard-)reset didn't help what else would?
Since you watermarked your device by installing SDE and Uruk you can't send it back to Archos. Good luck fixing it yourself

[Q] G Tablet Wifi unreliable

I have a G Tablet that I've been messing around with for the last 3 months or so. It had been fairly solid and reliable with Calkulin's ROM installed on it for awhile. Then the wifi started becoming unreliable when connecting to the ad-hoc wifi generated by my droid. This was aggravating, but the infrastructure wifi was still fine. Then that changed for me too. I get these periods where is just says error for he wifi status. I find that rebooting solves the problem for a while, but only for 10 minutes, if I'm lucky. I tried using different ROMs and finally settled on GTabComb BETA 2.0. I like this, but I still have the same wifi issues. To try to fix it, I used NVFlash to go back to the stock rom, still had the problem. Used the format utility, that scared the crap out of me, then NVFlash to go to Stock ROM. Then reinstall GTabComb, still with the flaky wifi. Has anyone else encountered this issue or have any idea how to fix it? I can't say I find my tablet terribly useful with no wifi.
are you sure it's an issue with the tab and not the Droid? has either device had an update to their tethering software?
Currently only using home wifi from my FIOS router. I was just poking around in there and noticed the Xbox stuff is being forwarded to the same IP as the Tablet. To avoid an IP Address conflict, I've given it a static IP in the DHCP settings that's well away from where the other IPs are being assigned out of. Hopefully I'll see some improvement.
Edit: Well, so much for it being an IP address conflict, it's out again with error.
Edit2: I've run the Fix Permissions from ROM Manager, that didn't help either. I can not figure this one out. Under the About Tablet, it says the wifi is an unknown version, is there a way to update the wifi itself?
Ya i have only had mine a few days and the wifi seems to drop in and out. If i disconnect and then reconnect it seems to help but i worry it will end up like yours eventually
Can you guys tell us what roms youre using when this happen? I'm trying to figure out if this is a software or hardware issue.
Between myself and family, we have 3 gtabs. And none have the problems that you guys describe.
I'm currently using GTabComb, but it started happening while I was running Calkulin. I didn't stay on stock long enough in between the two to really ascertain if that was a problem there as well.
In another post I mentioned having the same exact issue. My wifi out of the blue just became unreliable while tethered. Going on a week & a half now. I've been on the same rom on my phone for months, so I know it's not my phone. On my tab I've been using CM7 for months as well.
If I'm connected to my wifi router at home I have no problems. I have no idea what gives. I've tried just about everything I could (different roms, fix permissions, wiped all data, nvflash). The only thing I have not done is a complete G-Tab format utilizing the G-Tab format utility tool.

Are you using Barnacle, Wireless Tether for Root Users, or some other adhoc wifi app?

Don't bother with the G-Tab format utility, it doesn't help this issue. And besides, it has to be the scariest thing i've done to my tablet, I thought I was going to have to crack it open to make it work again after I did that.
I was using Wireless Tether for Root Users on my original Droid. Haven't tried it lately since the infrastructure issue popped up as well.
Fox_spy: If you gTab keeps dropping connections like clockwork, try flashing the zip file posted in this thread.
The wlan binary blobs in that zip file should work with all kernels, but, if you still have problems, the script saves your original wlan binary blobs as filename.bin.orig in /system/lib/hw/wlan, so you can easily restore them.
I'd like to know if downgrading-the-firmware-blobs solution works for you.
Just thought I'd post my experiences...
I've been using CM7 versions on mine, recently upgraded to 7.0.3 and my wifi connection now frequently drops. Haven't done much troubleshooting. I just disable and re-enable it to get the connection back.

This didn't work for me. It definitely changed the version though since I could see a difference in file size between the 2 files. I couldn't figure out how to change it back either since I kept getting permission denied. I've found that visiting the Android Market is a guaranteed drop and error for my wifi.
Have gone back to totally stock 3588 and that's working fine right now. Wifi is staying online and working as far as I can tell. I wish stock had the google Market so I could test that. I may have to go to another mod, but I don't want to have my wifi go flaky.
I believe I've fixed the wifi issue. As a crap shoot I typed the word "repair" into the Android Market & saw several apps for wifi repair. Though the apk description read that the fix was for other specific models I decided to give it a go. I figured well if it borks my rom I'll just restore my current backup.
I came across an app called "FXR WiFi fix and rescue". So far I've been using it for the past 2 hours via Wireless Tether & it hasn't dropped once. Previously before the fix, I was lucky if I got 5-10 min. before it dropped connection.
Just to make sure it wasn't a fluke I left my phone & tab untouched & connected for 30 min with an open web-page. When I came back to test it out, it was still connected.
If you want to try it then I suggest you back up your rom first. Let us know how it goes.
I'm running the latest CM7 nightly build btw.

Unfortunately this didn't fix my problem in GTabComb, but you mentioned CM7 which I actually don't seem to have any problems with from a wifi perspective. I put CM 7.1 RC 1 BL1.1 onto my tablet and the wifi is great, but I can't use it long term because it doesn't see the internal SDCard, which is annoying to say the least. No idea what's up on that one. Trying to find the mod I originally had on here for long term use to try that for a fresh install again, if only I could remember what it was.
Edit: Random question for those with wireless problems. Do you have a case on your tablet? I've got one of those full body skins. I really hope that's not the cause.
I put GtabComb Alpha 1.6.2 onto my tablet and it can scan networks and isn't immediately erroring out, which puts it ahead of some other ROMs I've tried. But it doesn't see ad-hoc networks so I won't know if it's stable until later when I get home.
Edit: $*^%, wifi fail at home using my FIOS router. However it occurs to me that I've got a repeating wireless bridge in my house, so I'm unplugging that and trying this again. I did manage to do more this time around before it dropped. So, I'm sort of making progress.
Edit2: I can't decide if I'm pissed or not that turning off the bridge seems to have fixed it. I may have to experiment more before I'm satisfied though.
Edit3: It's still going in and out. Damn.

That's a pity. My Wi-Fi drops were fixed after the firmware blob downgrade.
Send me the dmesg.txt that results from this command, after you've got a few Wi-Fi drops. Inside a Terminal program, type:
Code:
$ dmesg > /mnt/sdcard/dmesg.txt
I couldn't figure out how to change it back either since I kept getting permission denied.

The files are inside the /system partition which is normally read-only. You also need superuser privileges to make changes to that partition. Next time, use Root Explorer.

Plenty more errors towards the end of the file, and all of them are SDIO-related errors.
On the gTablet, both the wlan hardware and the SD card use the SDIO interface, which accounts for your SD card and wlan problems.
I see that you're running a custom Clemsyn kernel, so, I can't decide if this is a kernel problem or a hardware malfunction. Here's what I suggest you do.
1. Install ClockworkMod v0.8--the safe and stable version for gTablets.
2. Shut down the gTablet for ~5 mins.
3. Boot into clockworkmod and run that dmesg command again. I want to see the messages from a safe, standard kernel.
There doesn't seem to be an attach file option, or I'm missing it

[Q] Wifi will not auto connect

I have had this problem for awhile where my phone will not auto connect to my home WiFi, at first I thought it was due to me doing a lot of updates without wiping and was fine with that but I just updated to official LS8 and did a factory reset and it is still happening.
I did nothing but the initial login setup then left my phone when it lost the connection it would not connect again. I have to go through settings and manually select my AP and hit connect. Luckily it does save the credentials which is good since my passphrase is 63 characters long.
Anyone know what could be wrong. My cousins S II on the same software works fine connecting to my WiFi.
To reiterate I did do a factory reset and had the problem within minutes of starting the phone with zero changes other then logging into my Google account.

may be the problem is with the firmware or software you are using!!!!!
just do one thing and try if it works!
install any of the custom Rom present here which you like the most, maybe it stock or what else it doesn't matter!!!
do a full wipe in recovery and do format data, system and cache and then install the custom Rom!!!!
formatting will solve some of your basic problems related to Rom!!!
format options are available in recovery under Mount and storage option!!!
just try this once and let me know Bro!!

at least it works somehow
wifi doesnt work at all with me in LS8
it's buggy I can tell.
which kernal are you using some kernal have issues with certain types of routers because either the router or the phones wifi files are not upto date or cannot communicate with each other properly.
Flash other modem.
Don't ask how, use search, plenty of info.
I finally got it working, it turns out the JB firmwares were more picky about router settings then before. I found some advice on a different problem that unexpectadly fixed it where I specified the routers channel and width to 36 and 20mhz instead of auto.
That worked but caused massive slowdown on my LAN transfers for my laptop 8.5 MB/s instead of 12.5 MB/s I did some trial and error and found channel 64 and 40mhz also worked for my phone and gave me the better speed.

[Q] WiFi obtaining ip address

Hi,
As my title said, i don`t know how to get pass this problem. Until a few days ago my home wifi connection was running smooth but one morning it`s just got stuck on "obtaining ip address". I`ve tried factory reset, changing to another JB stock rom, changing kerrnel to PhilZ v5.06.6 Safe Stock Kernel, again the same problem. Reset my wifi modem was not the answer either. Do you have any other suggestion for me ?
Thank You !!!
Allocate static IP rather than dynamic via DHCP (Google is your friend). Someone else asked this exact same question/had this exact same problem last week & fixed it by doing this.
Edit - Update your router firmware if that doesn't work, then try with both a dynamic IP & static IP again once you've done that/if you need to do it.
the static IP is for the phone or for the modem ?
EDIT : Never mind mate, I found the solution! Thanks! I changed my phones IP into static.
Good man. And good job working out how to do it yourself
You're the 2nd person this has worked for over the past week, so we'll make this the standard 'first thing you try' when people are having this problem (I will at least).

Yes, but this is a solution only for your hot-spot at home where you can change the settings of the router, not for every hot-spot you encounter.
That's right. But you're never going to be able to fix problems like that (accessing a 'public' hotspot, etc) because you obviously don't have access to the router you're connecting to. Every now & then, something funky gets introduced to WiFi drivers in some builds of some kernels (exactly what, ??), causing problems with connecting to/maintaining a connection to some routers.
So, the problem is back... After few minutes of working, the Wi-Fi is yet again making problems. It keeps connecting to the network and then it keeps disconnecting and, while connected, the internet isn't working. In the attachment you'll see the setting I made on the phone. Is there anything wrong with them?
Then you try the other thing I suggested.
Edit - Also, what I meant when I said 'allocate static IP' is, at the router's end, tell the router to issue a static IP for that device (your phone), normally you can 'tell' the router - for device with MAC ab:01:cd:23:ef (as an example, the MAC of the WiFi adapter in the phone), allocate whatever static IP you want to use. Almost all routers should allow you to do this, I'm not going to tell you how to do it, because 1) It's not a phone thing & 2) How to do it will vary widely depending on the router.
So, after trying all software methods i found out that it`s a hardware problem. After making some deeper research i found that the faulty component was BAT500 leaking acid on the motherboard right on the Wifi circuits ( sadly this is o common problem on the s2 after going on ICS or JB ). Now i had two choices: either send my phone back to samsung service or to fix it myself. Since my warranty was gone i`ve tried the second method which was quite simple. All i had to do was disassemble my phone and clean the leaking with a brush and some alcohol, and now the wifi is working flawless.I don`t know if this is a permanent solution but i`ll try to update on the progress.
Nice work tracking down what was causing the problem Hopefully this thread gives people something to look at when they've tried everything else & it hasn't worked.

Hi i am facing the same problem. wifi in my s2 got stuck in the middle. Its not powering on, also it doesn't show powered off as well. I am on stock rom with mods. Did nandroid backup, factory reset, complete wipe, used other roms as well but non of them worked. Could there be some hardware related problem or heating problem or problem with BAT500? How did you diassemble your phone and cleaned that acid? can you please suggest some video links on this?
Search for the Samsung service manuals. Do a Google search; appending 'XDA' to your search terms should throw up some threads here where people have attached the files to posts. The manuals detail how to do pretty much every fix they do at service centres with pics, have parts lists, detailed diagrams that show where everything is. That should help.
Edit - Please don't post to multiple threads one after the other about the same issue (you revived a >6 mth old thread in that other one you posted to).

[KERNEL] 2.6.32.61-nAa-jb-06 [ROM][JB-4.1.2]Release 4, broken wifi and camera issues

love the x10 mini so flashed it to JB hoping to get a little more life out of the old thing. but I have run into a few issues.
1/I have two wifi routers, with this rom my phone will authenticate on neither, sitting right next to one it's telling me my signal is low, I had been able to connect to wifi once at random when toggling wifi off / on several rooms away but only once. wifi is a deal breaker, I need it else the phone is no good to me, I tried disabling DHCP but I have no idea where to start troubleshooting this one?
2/camera, the default camera apps sucks, I switched to opencamera but for some reason with both apps recording video is extremely choppy, any suggestion on this? Im just using a standard 2gb card at the moment, worth getting a faster card? is this an issue with the rom? it's choppy enough that I would say it renders this feature useless (also I don't have swap on yet)
3/loudspeaker in calls, iI exclusively use loudspeaker when making calls, Im not sure where this is on the new rom?
4/a full keyboard is cool but is there no way to get the phone keypad back as an option?
thanks

1 About the WiFi: Remember that the phone only does WiFi b/g, if you have your routers set to n it won't authenticate, if it's set to automatic (where it chooses to use n or g depending on the device trying to connect, it may already be connected in n-mode to another device, and can't or won't switch down) Try forcing WiFi-g in your router and you may have more luck.
2. The choppy video is ROM-related, there is a fix for it. I'll attach a zip below that you can flash through CWM. (omx_fix.zip)
3. When the call is connected there is a loudspeaker-button on the call-screen you need to press. With an outgoing call you can press it as soon as you start dialing, with an incoming call you have to answer the call and then press that button. There is no way to answer a call on speaker directly.
4. I use the Sony Xperia S ICS Keyboard, which works nicely in keypad mode. I'll also attach that below, just flash it with CWM

thanks so much on helping with the other issues, the loudspeaker, I guess I just missed where the button was? the wifi is still an issue tho...
the router is an oldish one (netgear dg834g v5) it was set to G only, I changed it to B & G but still just sitting on "connecting" authentication mode is WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key) if that makes a difference and my phone is baseband M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404015, not even sure where to start with this one? the other access point is also an old one (WL-HDD) both use strong passwords (upper and lower case characters and numbers)
Thanks

still no luck, but its worth mentioning the phone works fine as a tethered hotspot, restarted the router made it connect but as soon as I was out of range back to hanging on "connecting...."
Thanks for all the help video recording is a lot less choppy but it is not as smooth as it was with the factory rom (thinking faster SD card maybe help?)
The wifi just has me scratching my head, I see 6 nearby adapters, the phone is saying none of them have any signal (the list seems to be refreshing rapidly) my router is just flashing between 5 and 0 bars stuck on connecting.
are there any other functional roms that anyone can suggest I try to see if I can get some different results ?

I did just head over to the page
"Downloads -- do NOT mirror files anywhere"
click downloads
Sorry we shut the site down.....
yeah should have mirrored those downloads!
the download pureslim worked, using same kernel (E10_2.6.32.61-nAa-06.ftf) behaved exactly the same and wouldn't connect to wifi but from what Ihave seen I think this kernel has a newer wifi driver, maybe I should go looking for an older one with different drivers? or even reflash with the same one? thinking of going further back than jellybean, maybe ics or gingerbread worth it ?

Definitely not ICS if you want to go back,it had a very short development period before JB came out and is a lot less mature than JB. If you want to try going back, go for a gingerbread ROM. There are roms that work with nAa-s GB kernel and some that work on the stock kernel too.
ok different issue now .......
I try flash to gingerbread E10_nAn-14_2.6.29.6-nAa-14.ftf which went fine
first boot spamming the back button, dosn't take me to clockwork, trying all sorts holding down power up / down nothing
decided to flash back to JB but I cant turn the phone off to get it into upload mode, its just stuck rebooting, power button dosn't seem to do anthing, can't remove the battery so how do I power down?
help (digging myself a deeper hole, should I just leave it running until battery dies to get it into flash mode)
EDIT:forget that last one managed to get it into flash mode... power +home (still holding jsut home) connect usb release home hold back
wondering if there is an E10_2.6.32.61-nAa-05.ftf anywhere ? id like to try a slightly older JB kernel see if that gets the wifi fixed, maybe I should ask in a more generic section about troubleshooting the wifi?
the official downloads page goo.im being shut down is making it very difficult for me to find things
Thanks

Ah yes... flashing back to a GB kernel would require you to do all wipes (data, cache, dalvik, etc) from CWM in the JB kernel first and then flash the GB-kernel and then format the partitions from CWM in the GB-kernel to get them back to original size. (Since JB uses an extended /system partition and slightly smaller other partitions to create enough space to fit the ROM on)
You did format all the internal partitions (/system, /data and /cache) when you flashed the JB-kernel right? If you didn't, it may be an explanation for the troubles you've been having.
Flashing the GB-kernel twice will get you out of trouble if you forgot to wipe the data from the JB-kernel though, CWM will show up the second time you flash it, as far as I remember.

Thank you for all the help SmG67, I really appreciate it, I would have given up long ago if it weren't for you
Im sticking with JB on the x10 for now. it still refuses to connect to the netgear hub but I have tried it on a couple of others and t connects to every time without any issues, for some reason it just doesn't seem to like the netgear ?
any suggestions on that? if not Im still happy with it, I think it has given the old dog new life

Quite odd, you would think there is something in the Netgear router's setup that's different from the other routers then maybe...I haven't really had any issues regarding WiFi on JB, apart from trying to connect to N-configured routers. But glad to know that it connects fine now Hope you enjoy it, I know I did.

[Q] permanently disable/ delete wifi

Hi.. Im looking for a way to permanently disable wifi from my device, either by deleting the drivers, or changeing inner settings to turn off immidiatly when turned on.. I also want it as a permanent solution, not by installing an app that can be uninstalled...
I found a few other solution but none is good for s2, there is no /systems/lib/modules folder, and theres nothing about wifi in the Build.prop file...
Phone is rooted, stock 4.1.2
Thanks
Try looking these two files at /system/etc/permissions/ folder:
com.android.hardware.wifi.xml
com.android.hardware.wifi.direct.xml
Rename these both files (in the case you'll need them back later), for example:
com.android.hardware.wifi.xml.bak
com.android.hardware.wifi.direct.xml.bak
(When rename them, just make sure they don't ended with .xml extension)
Now reboot the phone. The system shouldn't detect the WiFi presence now. You can check it from Android settings, WiFi parts should be gone.
The drawback is, if you upgrade your ROM or install a new one, you need to repeat this procedure again. Also, I don't know if WiFi still can be detected someway from Android system.
A bit off topic:
I also have similar problem with my S2 regarding to defected WiFi. I've been thinking of pulling off WiFi chip near leaked clock battery (which is causing phone's date time always reset every time I remove the main battery). The only thing to prevent me doing that is because the bluetooth still good— well, sometimes it won't turned on before I switch the WiFi on (in that case, bluetooth goes on and WiFi still remain off).
Hope this help.
Is this - theoretically - possible with any process on any android phone? Would be the solution for a problem i'm doing research now for hours...
