Possible to respond to texts on desktop computer if connected via USB? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, is there a way for me to send/receive texts on my Windows desktop at work while connected via USB? Trying to avoid having to type on the phone....placement of USB cable is awkward

I'm pretty sure you can use Google Talk to respond to texts over the internet.

It's not free -but SMS2PC works pretty well. I've had a few connectivity issues with the latest version, but it's been pretty rock solid over the past 6 months (used it on my Backflip as well).

Mount you phone for portal and tools and when you plug it in Motorola Phone Portal will launch on your default browser. You can view and respond to messages and look at your pictures and files. Do that, its the best and easiest way. You can even do it without internet...

Awesome! Figured it out. At first, I didn't realize that you had to type in the IP address of the Atrix...but I got it all set up now. Thanks again!

Hey. You could use my app , SMS2PC, to do exactly that. Can connect over USB, WiFi and 3G if required.
Scott

You can try lazy droid from market. It's a free app that allows you to control your phone from a web browser. It's possible to send and receive SMS, has a file manager, a remote view of your phone, and so on.

Some phone networks dont allow direct connection over their networks.
For example, if you are just connected to AT&T you won't be able to directly connect to your phone's IP.
For it to work you'd need to be connected to your local WiFi and then try that IP Address.
Otherwise, you could always take the USB route and use the Phone Portal that way.

Oh dudes - Texty is the way to go here. Research here.
I use this all day, every day and it works great. Granted, it's not over USB but I think you might like this.

Nah SMS2PC The guy asked for USB not for a cloud service... how does this even help?

Ok i found out what my issue was w/ the USB moto phone portal. I am trying to do it on my work computer. Yesterday i plugged it in and it couldnt connect to the ip address provided. I have all the drivers installed so thats not a problem. This morning i come in and i plug in my phone, and phone portal pops up like it is supposed to. I was estatic. Then i have to start working and i connect to the company vpn. Then phone portal dies. I cannot use phone portal while my computer is connected to a VPN. Anybody know any way around this? when i do ipconfig /all in the cmd window it shows that the adapter is up w/ the right ip block.

Internet Sharing Issue

Have had some problem when connecting to the pc using USB or Bluetooth. On the phone itself the connection goes fine all the way (i even manage to download 200mb or 400mb files with opera)
On the computer i also have one USB 3g modem witch works fine and that was confirmed by my ISP.
Have tried Toshiba support to see what was their point, and, although they reply very fast (under one day) the messages are not very conclusive. i leave then have to see what you guys think

No it doesn't mean you are the slave of Mobile Device center.
They want you to connect to Mob Device Center once, and then download the correct drivers needed for your phone. All you have to do is wait till it says 'Connected' which means that your phone has all the necessary drivers.
I am presuming the rest of the steps are straightforward on your device - so next time you connect device, follow the steps above and it should work according to their reply!
OK, i have seen one Unidentified Device when i connect the phone with usb mode . The windows fails to install it but the connection goes ok the same way (until it fails a bit later).
Anyway, another thing i noticed is, the USB 3g Modem i have Hits the 3.2 Mbit whitch is its maximun speed , but the phone fails to even reach its 7.2.... will it be because of the missing driver? (whitch i have no clue how o install) Is this the same procedure for any phone that uses USB (Android , IOS) needs drivers to work properly?
Thank you

Can I ask if you have installed Windows Device Center or Active Sync using a CD that comes with TG01 or not?
I have installed from the Microsoft website, Windows mobile device center.
Have now tried the same on another computer with Windows XP (Active Sync), and the problem is the same as with windows7 (and Ubuntu) where i have already tried.
I am using one Toshiba OFFICIAL Rom, with USB the connections takes a bit more to set up but normally lasts more time connected, with bluetooth, it connects very fast but when it breaks, the PHone crashed completely and the only way to continue is reset..
Want to know if anyone has similar issue
thanks
Have had the following reply after trying to contact toshiba Aggain
"It is normal for the connection to be slower trough the Internet sharing than your normal computer Internet connection. Please note that the phone has different technical specification than your PC has. Also, the Internet connection that you share has different technical specification than the one you get from your home broadband.

Can someone explain what does this actually mean? The TG01 Cant be used as a 3G Usb Modem ?
thanks
Anybody used or is using the TG01 as a Data modem for the pc?

Good friend trying to use modem to get internet on her XP computer

Hey guys long time no see. im usually in the Android Kiaser section, but I got a different question for today. A good friend of mines recently got a old computer. It had a lot of viruses on it and I cleaned them out. Once I was done with that, I had her o/s up and it was running a lot faster than before.
Anyway, she wanted to use her Optimus T as a modem because she doesnt have internet connection or DSL in her house. She is a genius and all, so she picks up stuff very fast . especially in IT and computers .
Well she followed the tethering instructions for XP and downloaded it to her phone. She then hooked it up to her computer and when we searched for the file, it was there but it could not be launched.
Now I advised eher to come here and ask you guys for help, but she is very prideful and wants to figure it out on her own. Now if this were a simple hardwre issue no problem . but since this is a networking issue , and well you guys are far more experienced in these matters, I was wondering if theren were a special program she needed or something like that for her computer to properly launch the program needed for her phone to go online
Well I used to be in the same boat With the internet. Although It wasn't a smartphone. The solution i came up with after days of trying was the phone in question needed an initialization command pointing to the apn of the phone. This was accomplished with no special software just windows built in capability, on a standard sp 2 machine. I would try my optimus but i have win 7 x64. Anyway not sure whether it helps or not but the proper initialization command would be something like AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”epc.tmobile.com” the number to dial should be " *99# "
The post below me is also good. It is usb network instead of modem.

You basically have two options to go about doing this. Switch on Data on your phone ..
1. Connect the phone via the USB cable and select the LG PC suite application, under Tools there is a option of Internet connection using Phone.
OR
2. Connect the phone via the USB cable, do not run the LG suite, instead on the phone in Settings -> Wifi & networks Use the portability and tethering option. The first option is USB tethering, the second is Wifi. Just select the USB one. THis will create a local network between the phone and computer and allow you to access the internet ...
Cheers !

..Well third option is to use P500 as a bluetooth modem to access Internet.
You have to pair the devices and use bluetooth dialup profile. This post is sent that way from my Compaq nx8220 laptop

Tethering Issue... among others.

Tethering worked for me just once, through wifi. Now, everytime my laptop, or any device connects to my O1 it doesn't detect the internet even if I am able to browse on the phone through my 3G connection.
I can ping the phone's ip address and access shared folders on my laptop through ex file manager so I know the connection is there. Somehow, though, the Internet isn't going through.
My other concern is how this thing manages the sd card. Ever since I bought this, as long as there are no apps installed to the sd, my phone works perfectly fine. Once I move any app to it, though, weird things start happening... like the phone reboots randomly, or freezes, or the sd card unmounts and remounts without loading the apps on it, forcing me to do a manual un/remount or reboot.
I tested this by moving all apps back to internal. 2 days passed with no reboots. Then I moved just one app to the sd and let it sit. No more than 30 mins, the startup sound alerted my attention.
Except flashing custom roms, which I refuse to do until stock works fine, I've already done most of the suggestions I could find floating here on xda and other forums... rooting, unrooting, clearing cache, factory reset, reformatting sd card and so forth... so I was wondering what else I could do to fix these problems.
Phone has been up now for almost a week without rebooting after I took the app out of the card and back to internal. But I don't see the sense of having external memory if the phone goes crazy with apps on it.
Otherwise, it's a perfectly decent phone.

I would like to up this post and ask about the initial concern again. Wifi Tether works like a beauty, but I noticed it's an ad-hoc network. Not all devices see my "router".
So back to the original concern of using the built-in Wifi Tethering of this O1... why can't I get any internet on the devices that are able to connect to it? Again, the I.P. address is correct, but there is no Internet connection.
Well, no info here... so. The usual network troubleshooting drill, like...
Code:
ipconfig /all
route print
(on Windows boxes)
Code:
ip address show
ip route print
(on your phone, either via terminal emulator or via adb shell).

If by info you mean what kind of phone, it's a rooted stock P500 v10b.
I already mentioned in previous posts that the ip addresses report fine. Again, all devices can connect to the built-in tether, they get correct ip addresses but just no internet. It worked just once when it was new. Never again after that, even after the first factory reset.
But here's what terminal says.

Well, what do you mean by "no internet".
E.g., what does the following produce (on Windows)?

Doesn't that usually mean that I can't go online the normal way?
On windows, tracert www.google.com doesn't do anything. Surprisingly, it worked for the I.P. address. Browsing using I.P. addresses works, as well.
That being said, I think there's a problem with the way the built-in tethering handles DNS server numbers, which is why none of the devices that connect to it is able to connect through to the internet.
Any ideas on why this is happening? Or how to fix?

Go online the normal way does not really mean much either, so - no. Internet != web browsing.
Meanwhile, since your DNS is apparently not working properly, stick 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google public DNS) to the TCP/IP settings on the clients and it will work.
"built-in tethering handles DNS server numbers" - those are IP addresses. If you can ping/traceroute using DNS names (like www.google.com) from the phone, then obviously your clients are not getting the proper DNS servers assigned from the phone via DHCP server.
For further debugging, you need to post which DNS servers are being used on the phone and whether those match the ones assigned to the WiFi clients (or if any are assigned at all). Again, ipconfig /all or whatever similar according to the clients OS.
Using built-in tethering, I checked the DNS server assigned to a windows client, it's the same as the ip address it got from the phone. No browse using urls. Pings are ok, tracert only works if I use the ip address as shown on the ping, and I can browse to a website if I use the ip instead.
Using Wireless Tether, the DNS server is the same as the assigned ip address, but I'm able to browse and tracert using urls.
The only reason I'm trying to get built-in to work is because not all devices can detect Wireless Tether's adhoc network. Even a fellow Optimus One can't see it. (On a side note, I can't detect wireless adhoc networks, either.)
I don't know how to check the DNS assigned to the phone. But looking at ip route, it's probably the first two numbers.
Code:
#ip route
202.126.40.5 dev rmnet0
222.127.143.5 dev rmnet0
10.31.40.196/30 dev rmnet0 src 10.31.40.198
10.10.1.0/24 dev wlan0 src 10.10.1.254
default via 10.31.40.197 dev rmnet0
#
Up until the time Wireless Tether will be able to start as a true access point, I will be wondering what's going on with the built-in.
If assigning a DNS server to a client would work, that still doesn't address the fact that you can't manually assign DNSs on all devices.

I do not understand. Their DNS is set to their local IP address? Well, that obviously cannot work unless you install a DNS server on the computer.

I tried putting google's public dns on the wireless network connection's tcp/ip v4 properties, but it still came up with no browse, no ping, tracert ok on ip address.
By the way, cat /system/etc/resolv.conf doesn't exist on the phone according to terminal emulator. I checked with root explorer as well to confirm.
Unless there is a running DNS server/proxy on the default GW, it will not work. Check with nslookup or whatever similar tool.
/system/etc/resolv.conf does not exist? I do not understand how are you able to browse anything from your phone then. It specifies the DNS servers the phone is using.

Getting totally lost here. Why on wireless? By "built-in" tether you mean you connect the phone via USB cable? Well, that does not use wireless at all, so setting any DNS there will not do any good.
Oh well, to sum this up - if you devices cannot see an ad-hoc wifi network, those are broken, not the phone. Messing with USB cable and internet connection sharing on your PC is just a waste of time, IMHO.

Total of three brand new Optimus Ones, all unable to see different adhoc networks that work on other wireless-capable devices (this laptop and an iProduct)? I'm just not seeing how the adhoc networks are broken.
It might be a waste of time for you, but this is the way I use the internet at home: my laptop tethered to my phone. I'll probably just wait for Wireless Tether to upgrade to access-point capacity.
Thanks for helping me out with this!

Could be a million things going wrong...password, diff key algorithm, MAC address filtering (if he has it enabled on the router).
You need to do more troubleshooting before asking the question...give the forum a starting point.
Check to see if your phone supports the type of the router.
For example, if your router is N and you phone only supports g/b, it won't work.
Check if the router supports as many devices are connected
is it normal that my ip address in wifi settings is unavailable ??

I guess it is since you haven't connected to a network that would have assigned you an IP address.

Ummm...NO. N is backwards compatible, both on 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

It would help to have more information about the way the router is set up, etc. Can other phones connect to it? Are you getting any error messages?
I bought a used WRT54GS a few weeks ago and couldn't get my phone connected over WiFi until I updated the firmware. You may want to look into that. It said it was connecting and then said disconnected. It never said it was connected though.
Once I got the new firmware installed then I was able to connect, encrypt the connection, etc.

~ we already updated the firmware but still got the problem .. we've done all troubleshooting we can do .. i even change my rom and kernel but nothing happens .. other device can connect to his router, mine was the only one that can't connect ...
btw i can connect to other wifi .. i guess the problem is in the router ?
Well, at least you know it's not your phone ...

Sorry to hear that.
If other devices can connect to it and yours can't, even with different ROMs and kernels, then it looks like this particular router just doesn't like your phone/setup for some reason. Especially since you can connect to other WiFi units.
Very frustrating.
If the router is set up to allow enough connections and isn't filtering out your phone's ==> WiFi <== MAC address then I don't know what else can be wrong.
Hope you can find a workaround, but I can't think of anything else at the moment.

no wifi at work

hey people,
here is the issue. i am able to connect to my wifi at home no issue. when i try to connect at work it says connected but i have no access to the internet. the bars are grey with the up and down arrow going crazy but the bars never turn blur. sound like its not authenticating. i noticed when i connect its always trying to connect to the same DHCP IP. i asked the network guys to release the address manually but it does not seem to have helped. any ideas. i do not know much about DHCP so i could be blowing sunshine up your a$$. ; )
i own the i757m so there is only 1 radio to choose from.
talk to your network administrator and ask them to verify if the router is actually seeing your phone.
it maybe trying to connevt but the router is not acknowledging the phone is sending a valid request.

I've had this in situations where free wifi is given out. My phone connects to the router but not the Web until I've registered with the service provider. It's not your phone it must be an error in your log on details, password etc

Maybe their DHCP server is acting up. Try setting your IP address manually (assuming you know the rest of the networking configuration as well).

i also tried that. should have mentioned these things, sorry. its really irritating me. i see its connected and it says its connected. it seems like it connects to the router but the DHCP server will not authenticate if thats makes any sense.
