I've searched and it seems that froyo doesn't support wma and only patchy reports that any non-stock music player will play them either. Now I know wma is a fairly crap format but I've got gigs of music on my server in that format and I've neither the time nor inclination to convert it. Any advice? I want a free and legal solution ideally
OK so PowerAmp seems to support it, but why no native support I wonder. Don't really want to spend any money fixing this as a fully functioning music player is one of the reasons I got a SE phone in the first place Any free suggestion appreciated. Pretty sure the SE media player supported them but obviously I've nuked that piece of crap from orbit by installing 2.2. Well it was the only way to be sure...
I'm using poweramp, plays everything I throw at it and has a sweet equaliser. Oh you said free, sorry!

PowerAmp does look good but it seems very odd that other players don't support it. Was a longtime winamp user but no longer it seems...

There's nothing odd about that. No other player has ported ffmpeg to Android, maybe VLC when it's ready.
iv been getting ignored in another thread about this, wma files played fine in the stock music app on cm6.1.3 v4.4 .. after i updated to 4.5 suddenly they dont work again .. tried installing honecomb music app .. did work either (its a beautiful app though i must admit )
im not sure what to do .. and im really f***d cuz i dont even know how to convert the wma files on my computer even if i wanted to

So just use poweramp, it works with wma
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
There are tools out there for free to convert wma but looks like $5 for poweramp may be easier. I'm sure wma was supported in se2.1 with several free players tho. Minor for most but if you've got gigs of wma to play could be a consideration
Confirmed. Winamp or mediascape play wma fine on se2.1. Possibly worth noting as a restriction for custom 2.2+ ROMs?
I use my atrix is my primary media device and hate having to go back to the app everytime to change songs is there any other way like a lockscreen skip and playback app?

WinAmp
Hope this helped
playerpro is probably the best music player i have ran into.
If you want to waste $5.08 on a music play then go ahead and buy PlayerPro. But if you want the same thing, that works just as well if not better, then get WinAmp.
Dont be a sucker and pay $5 for a stupid music player.
Songbird
it is free

No flac support, no eq, no folders, no tag editing....
DoubleTwist is great and has airsync(wifi). The lock screen takes over the whole screen and shows a large cover with good sized rev/play/fwd buttons at the bottom
Does PowerAmp play flac on the Atrix? I haven't been able to play any flac.
Winamp is terrible, for reasons already stated. I've never used Songbird so i cannot say anything about it. DoubleTwist was my primary a long time ago, but for some reason it could not read music files on the external sd so it had to go. It may have been because I had purchased it right when the phone came out so external sd support might not have been working yet. I do not know if they have updated it to work with it or not yet so you may want to ask someone around here if you plan on purchasing it.

Yes, PowerAmp does play FLACs on the Atrix. You can check it out for 14 days. I'm getting close to the end of my trial, and I have yet to find a decent alternative that supports FLAC. May end up shelling out some dough.
On topic, PowerAmp also has a lock screen widget.
I love how people are sooooo damn demanding when it comes to what music play to get. ITS A MUSIC PLAYER!!! not a new phone!

Well we buy nice phones for cool features and a lot of us buy nice apps for nice features too. Winamp isn't bad it's just playerpro is better, in my experience at least.

For many people it is probably the most used function of the phone as well.
MixZing also has a lockscreen widget.
PowerAMP
Don't bother with anything else, nothing compares. Well worth the 5 bucks.

i downloaded a .mp4 video to my aria, but it said that it could not play it... i checked the android developer site for compatible formats, and i saw that this format was listed there... any ideas as to why it may not be playing?
thanks

My Aria can play mp4 format videos by itself, but since you have no luck in playing it, just download and install the rockplayer. It can play many more formats than the phone alone can play.

RockPlayer is great. Another good option is QQPlayer.
with the rockplayer, i had trouble with it sychronizing the music and the video. for the qqplayer, i keep on getting a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

weird... i found VPlayer (Free Trial) on my computer on the droid market, but not on my phone market... anyways, it says that the program is not compatible with my device. now that i think of it, i guess that is why it isn't showing up on my phone
any other suggestions? it seems like it doens't like these bigger files. i will even get codec format not supported. i try a 111mb video, and it force closes...

What android version do you have? Do you have the official 2.2 or stock 2.1? Or did you use Cyanogen mod to update? The Aria is capable of playing mp4 videos on its own as I said in my first post.

The Aria requires very specific specifications for MP4, or else it will not play.
Try using Handbrake and follow closely with these instructions.

it seems to work, just a little sluggish :/
Rockplayer tries hard to play the video, but plays it extremely sluggish, like 1 frame per second or so.
Try yxplayer it works fine ...

I tried different players and saw that most of the players work the same way. They all play the same files and cannot play the other ones.
Except Moboplayer, which played a 900mb AVI file very well, with synchronized audio, video and subs.
So it seems Moboplayer is a good option. Although on Aria it's a >10mb phone memory hog.

Player Pro does this.
Agreed +1 on player pro (current player with sense skin)
Also use the folder option as well...so that option won me over entirely
I think there is like one more player that offers a folder option (trust me I went through them ALL) but cant think of it to save my life...might of been miui player??? idk?? dont hold me to it...
I think Mixing had folder option as well. I started using Player Pro a couple years ago and never looked back.
It's good but i prefer poweramp

It has a nice interface, but messing with the EQ too much causes it to hang. And if music is playing, you can't control it in any way, the only solution is to force close the app.
I usually just use Amazon MP3 to play music. The stock Blur player leaves a lot to be desired, and Google Music doesn't (seem to?) differentiate between cloud and local playback. With Amazon MP3 it's real easy. Plus, I buy music from them and I've ripped and uploaded my CDs to their cloud (and to Google's, it's nice to have options, heh). It isn't a great player, but it's reliable. And while I enjoy music, I don't play it on my phone often enough to need a fancy player.
But, thanks for the link, it was fun to try out.
Hi, thanks in advance for the help.
I recently copied a lot of music from my computer to my phone, and I use Poweramp to play it. Everything is fine except for an annoying problem which I will try to describe as best as I can:
Each song has a length obviously, however, when in Poweramp, this length is increased for every song, producing a sort of very long gap at the end of every song. For example, if my song is 3:20 of music, Poweramp will add 15 more secs of useless space at the end of it, making it 3:35. Should I click the progress bar right at the end of the song, it will do nothing but immediately change to the next track (for example, if I want to play the last 5 seconds, nothing will play but it will only play the next track).
Summary: Poweramp adds useless, not even playable space at the end of every track.
I have tried doing a full rescan, a rescan, changing track names, clearing data, clearing cache.. nothing.
Can you please help me?

I've had this problem before and I still have it now. It seems like poweramp doesn't like manually encoded mp3's. So did you encode some? Like used a youtube to mp3 converter etc? If you did then the problem will arise. If you are patient enough you can encode the mp3 files again using audacity and export them as a 320kbps ones or you could just buy the original music through itunes or somewhere that legally sells downloadable mp3's

damn, I actually bought the cds, then ripped to lossless and then converted using Audials prior to adding them to iTunes and then gave the cds away!
It makes me no more happy to know that you still have the problem. :/
What you recommend would take a long time indeed. I am certainly never using Audials again.

I don't know about Audials but yeah somehow Poweramp doesn't really like programs converting the mp3 files. And about Audacity I just accidentally found out about it and it works wonders after it exports the mp3 files and weirdly poweramp doesn't add those additional 15secs of playtime.

BUT you tend to lose even more quality when converting from lossy to lossy AFAIK... It would work as a temporary solution though. Thanks for the tip!
I had contacted their customer service and they knew NOTHING, they even asked me to send them a sample song just to tell me to do the Full Rescan. I would ask for a refund, but the app is so good at everything else!
Did you contact them?

i'm no music expert but yeah it would lose quality but the difference is unnoticeable imo. The app is really quite good and really stands out of all the music apps on the playstore. And nope i haven't contacted them about this issue as I've downloaded most of my music on itunes so no additional encodes were required.
If you don't add any more compression and change encoding - you wont lose quality. Its not the process that loses quality, its your settings

Nope the update didn't fix it.
I was checking and analyzing everything today and it does have to do with the encoding. I had mp3s that were shown on iTunes as 'MPEG Audio' and some others as 'MPEG Audio File'. The first ones had the problem when added to Poweramp, the other ones didn't.

And to me it seems like MaxMP (creator of the app) is ignoring the problem. Oh well... the app is superb however when it comes to problems like this the support is quite disappointing.
