Before I flash this kernal... - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just to make sure I am doing this correctly. Im using a TMO Vibrant, running stock 2.2 froyo KA6. This is not the 4G model. I wanna load the kernal from cmered Overstock with voodoo
1. Rooted phone using superoneclickroot
2. Download SGS Kernal Flasher from market, and gave it superuser permission
3. moved Overstock to my external sd on phone which has 5.33gb left
4. opened SGS Kernal flasher and will choose kernal to load
5. After flashing kernal will go to market and download Voodoo app and BLN app
Am I missing anything?

Anybody

I would just backup your current kernel with kernel flasher and reboot into recovery to flash overstock. Do you have clockwork installed from rom manager?

no i dont have clockwork rom manager installed, I thought I could just use the SGS kernal flashing app? am I thinking wrong

No biggie people get wound up about backing up you can reinstall apps if you lose them
I would download Rom manager and titanium backup
Here is what i do:
1. Copy my internal sd card to my external card in a folder called "back up int" (this is in case you lose everything from a bad flash)
1.A. If you have Titanium backup I would back up everything to that.
2. Then flash your new rom
3. Then root the phone
4. Then Down load Rom manger
5. Restore from Titanium backup
Then you are good to go......
5. Then restore with

If you are on 2.2 you have to use superone click root again and run a script there is a thread on how to do this its simple but the clockworkmod wont work unless you go back to 2.1.

why cant I use sgs kernal flasher?

Nobody really uses that around here. Everybody flashes from clockwork. Id look up the info a few posts above and get rom manager working on your phone.

Once you have followed the instructions provided in that thread, you SHOULD be good to go. If you are having issues with getting the 3e mod/hack to work, hook up to SuperOneClick one more time and "Shell Root" right before you try to do the mod hack, this worked for me.
Let us know how it goes.
PS: this hack only pertains to you if you're running the official 2.2 ROM, not 2.1

Can anyone plz tell me what's wrong?

Did you follow the steps koush gave in his thread for CWR?
Installation instructions:
1.Download ROM Manager from the Market.
2.Flash Recovery.
3.Choose Vibrant as your phone.
4.Accept the Superuser prompt.
5.On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
6.Watch the backup go!

You probably tried to partition the internal memory with clockwork mod. I also had that same issue before my replacement vibrant came. Now I flashed alot of roms and my recovery still looks normal. Im so relieved.

Are you sure ur phone is rooted. Clockwork recovery wont work until its rooted. For some strange reason everytime I go back to stock to flash a new rom I have to do a full sd wipe. Even when the update.zip file is there for root there's something that on the card that wont let me root until after I completely wipe the sd card.

These steps also do not work for me. When running "reinstall package" it will see the new update.zip file but does not load it. It skips it and just boots back into the standard blue recovery mode. I have flashed and re-flashed about a hundred time. I even tried older flashes of clockwork.

JL4, I Can't Root using update.zip

I used ODIN to flash JL4.
I am trying to root, putting update.zip onto my internal sd. Upon reboot into Android system recovery 3e, and choosing "reinstall packages."
I get the following problem:
E:failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip (No such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Suggestions? Is the problem that I can't root JL4 2.2 via update.zip?
Edit:
Use the cwm flashable JL4 instead. Geoffcorey did the hard work for us and provided root.
The recovery won't let you flash unsigned zips (3e). You need to mod your recovery using untermensch's fix. Although I wonder if you can use AutoSign or something like that to sign the zip file.

I just tried the AutoSign on the cwm update.zip, jk6 recovery update.zip, and the root update.zip. None worked. Hopefully somebody has better luck. I'm going to revert back to Eugene's rooted froyo and flash the cwm version of JL4.

[SOLVED] Can't root! "E: signature verification failed"

My Vibrant used to be rooted. I just updated Tmobile Froyo KA6. I try rooting using Z4root, but it won't do anything. I manually try and getting:
"E: signature verification failed

I read this could be the problem on the forum, but I don't know how to fix it:

-for BML-"
ps.don't know if this information of the phone help:
Froyo 2.2

Thank you Ibridges! the superoneclick from TheUnlockr work for me.
Super On Click Root worked for me but I get the same message while trying to install a new ROM.
I got the "E:signature verification failed" message on my Motorola Defy (Android 2.1 Eclair with Motoblur) while rooting in recovery mode. It was using the SuperOneClick method connecting the phone to a Mac. Actually, that version of the software says once installed in your Mac that is for Samsung Galaxy S, but root all models. I followed the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304
I have to say that I tried z4root and was useless; so now I see little alternatives...
USB debugging, SD mount and everything is in the way it should... Anyone can help me please?
Edit: I saw in the mentioned thread that many are having similar problems. Someone said that manually copying the update.zip file in the SD card and then doing the whole thing in recovery mode worked. I wasn't that lucky. Now, at the bottom of the phone screen I get the following lines in yellow:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
So I am stuck here.
Same thing happened to me when I did the kies update for 2.2 ka6 and hated froyo stock. I tried to root and couldn't. Long story short, I Odin'ed back to 2.1 and used one click root which worked perfectly. Running Bionix V now no problems .
I would try to use odin to go back to 2.1 and use super one click root from the unlockr.

Yes, you do have to go back to 2.1 before being able to flash any custom rom.
Guys,
I have resolved this many many times... Just follow these steps -
Pre-requisite - Enable USB debugging on your phone and connect it to your pc.
1. Root your phone using SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse. You can get it at 'http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682'
2. Go to this thread and download the two files 'http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423' - '3e_recovery_installer.zip' and 'update.zip (1.34 mb)'
2. Run install.bat from 3e_recovery_installer folder to rectify the the recovery signature checking.
3. Keep the just downloaded update.zip (1.34 mb) in your internal sdcard and boot under recovery. Select reinstall package option. Update.zip will get installed and phone will reboot.
Its not done yet.
4. Now get the actual clockwork mod recovery update.zip (1.72 mb). You can get this using ROM manager. Now put this update.zip (1.72 mb) in your internal sdcard and boot under recovery. Select reinstall package option. Update.zip will get installed and phone will reboot and will be back in samsung recovery mode. Select reinstall package again and bang... You should now be at cwm recovery

Before installing a custom ROM, it is not mandatory to go back to stock 2.1. Generally it is just recommended when you are going from one custom ROM to another custom ROM and by going back to stock you avoid taking ghosts (issues) of one custom ROM to another.
So if you follow my instructions to resolve your cwm recovery for Stock 2.2, you should be good to go to Simply Galaxy/Sweet Honey 2.7.1 without going back to Stock 2.1.
Hope this helps...
Its a normal occurrence after upgrading through Kies to 2.2. The 3e recovery always used to work for me regarding the signature verification error. Accept the last time I tried it about a week ago it coukdnt get it to work for whatever reason.
So what I did was use odin & revert back to 2.1. Then root using one click root. Then just flash a 2.2 rom in clock work, Bionix for example. Then you will on 2.2. You will have no problem with the signature verification this way. Gluk

DISABLE E: SIGNATURE VERIFICATION ON SAMSUNG VIBRANT
Here goes steps to install this modified 3e Recovery:
PREREQUISITE
Working USB connection between your Vibrant and computer. You may setup ADB or install Kies on your computer.
INSTRUCTIONS
Disclaimer: Proceed at your own risk. We are not responsible if your device gets bricked or damaged during the process.
1. Download Modified Recovery 3e for Vibrant on to your computer and extract it’s content.
2. Put your Samsung Vibrant into “USB Debugging Mode”. To do it, go to “Applications”—> “Settings” –> “Applications” –> “Development” –> and check the box “USB debugging”.
3. Connect the Vibrant to computer via USB cable.
4. Run the “install.bat” file located in the extracted content.
5. Wait till the process completes.
That’s it. Your Vibrant should now have modified 3e Recovery that disables signature verification. You may now root the Samsung Vibrant or install ClockworkMod Recovery on it.
now try rooting with one click or manual
What I did is, I odin back to 2.1
Then I used an app called Z4root to root the phone. Once there download CWM from tom manager and enjoy

2.2 KA6 Froyo and Clockworkmod recovery

I tried to re-install packages after I flashed clockworkmod recovery and got an error
E:failed to verify whole-file signature

Doesn't work with the latest stock ROM
I am a noob like you. I reinstalled the stock ROM using the AIO Vibrant Toolbox. Than I upgraded to the latest stock ROM using the Kios. But the Clockworkmod recovery did not work just like yours.
After spending hours and trying several different ways without any luck, I decided to start over. This time I did not load the latest ROM update with Kios. This time I was able to load Clockworkmod recovery. I think it has a problem with the latest stock recovery software.
with the stock 2.2 you need a modified recovery. stock uses 3e recovery so you need to odin supercurios ka6 voodoo kernel or go thru the dev section and do the steps for the modified 3e recovery.

Tried that and it no worked. Can I Odin Supercurio's KA6 Voodoo kernal like another user stated...If so How do I ODIN it.....Also can I flash the Overstock kernal after that
Download Odin
open it up on your pc
turn off your phone & plug the USB into your phone
hold down both of the volume keys (not the power key)
plug the other end into pc
should be in download mode
check to see if you have a yellow COM port in ODIN
if you do, place the KA6 voodoo.tar in the PDA line of ODIN and hit start
it will take some time 5 or 10 mins...and your phone will reboot on its own..
DONOT do anything to it while this process is happening..
find an app on market called Quick boot and then you can CWM recovery flash the Overstock kernel or use Kernel Flasher to flash Overstock kernel.
there is also the AIO toolbox in the DEV section you could use
try this on for size...worked for me. Hopefully for you too.

It sounds like you are using the Rom Manager from the Market when you should be using the CWM app.
If you don't have the CWM app and you are using a kernel that has CWM, you need to boot into Recovery using Power, Volume Up and Home buttons then install your zip from the sd card.
Just use the flash update mode.

Yes of course, you should not be unzipping the files because it corrupts them. Do yourself a favour and become more familiar with flashing instructions, it will save you a lot of panic and anxiety, like what you have just been through.
