I have LTE turned on in my area and when I use my wireless tether for root users I get awesome speeds between 2-3MBps but after about 150-200MB downloaded those speeds immediately drop off to just 10-20k or so. Now I rarely go over the 5GB soft cap and even when I do it's only by a few hundred MBs. Is there some sort of throttling going on and any way to stop it?
It has been discussed actually (and with that application), but anyways, at least you tried
Assuming your speeds are bad due to one application isnt exactly a very good test (more so since you did not say what version of the application you are running since that could matter). If you want to be certain, try internet connection mode via usb and download a test file from a location around you, such as from one of these data centers http://www.linode.com/speedtest/ and watch the speed. Doing that, you can eliminate plenty of variables, like the wifi connection on either end acting up for whatever reason and the application.
If it stays constant, then it's the app. If it doesn't, well that's not a 100% indication either. LTE is unstable speeds will fluctuate. If you're only testing from one location, that's not a very good conclusion either.
Whenever you have a problem, try to go through the total process of elimination only focusing on one variable at a time and try to keep everything else the same. Most likely it's you or the current setup on your phone or the application, not verizon. How do I know this? Because many have downloaded way more than you have and haven't been throttled (just from people I know locally with an LTE enabled phone).
Exusting all possible outcomes is a much better conclusion than wildly guessing you are being throttled though.
Another way you can test directly on your phone:
1) open up the terminal
2) type the 3 lines below: (downloads a file, gets the time it took and then removes it after)
cd /mnt/sdcard
time wget http://207.192.68.6/100MB-newark.bin
rm 100MB-newark.bin
*if the above doesn't work, then you need busybox, but nearly every rom/kernel has it that's not stock, so you should by default, have it. If not, search in the market for busybox installer. The reason you see an ip there is wget doesnt play well with hostnames on the android due to the way it resolves domains and busybox generally being statically linked. If you want to try another url, you have to get the ip like above (you can do that by pinging the hostname on your phone).
3)Note "real" the time it took in seconds and divide 100 by that to get Megabytes per second (MBps not Mbps) or by 102400 to get Kilobytes per second (I suppose you could get Megabits, but that's a pretty pointless measurement other than making your connection look fast compared to saying bytes, since your files all appear in bytes and browser downloads show in bytes). If you really care about mbps, multiple what you did above already by 8.
4) when it finishes you have an answer totally on your phone alone.

I believe there is a problem with the "Wireless Tether" app. I don't think it plays well with the 4G, this could be a reason for it. Have you tried used the "Mobile Hotspot" app, that comes with the phone? Do you get the same results?
I have also used the stock mobile hotspot app as well as tether via usb and get the same result. For clarification... I am downloading large files (500mb or larger) from a work server so I know that it's a problem on my phone end and not a problem on the server end. I can be on my home computer and download the files and never drop below 5MBps download the whole time... usually never drop below 10MBps to be honest.
Android police says that the way wireless tether works.. there is no way to tell if you're tethering or not without digging deep into packets.. deep enough that it would be invasion of privacy

That's all good and well but there is definitely something going on here. I've run the same test same file all 3 ways once every 4 hours since my first post and at about 150-200mb downloaded my speeds drop to almost non existent and the same goes for files downloaded from Microsoft and Google among others. Downloading the same file from my home internet does not see this slow down at all. I've even tried letting it run for over an hour like that to see if it was something temporary. It seems to stay throttled down till I've let the phone sit for a few hours without using any data then kicks back up to normal speeds until I restart another large download.
Is there any way to do a more controlled experiment to see if I'm crazy, unique or what?

yeah...backup your current rom, flash and restore your phone back to near stock (still rooted) and try without any meddling (custom stuff) http://www.multiupload.com/26WG1UZCXR http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423
you also never mentioned what android version and rom you are currently using. if it's anything other than froyo, that could be your problem since nothing else is anywhere as stable (by stable, i dont mean "oh it works" i mean as in tested throughly and was put out for non testing release).
Though the above suggestions stated above likely are the culprit, and will help you...there is also a chance that you are indeed being throttled occasionally. Infact, I'm sure we all have been. Verizon has several manned data centers throughout the state who monitor all the traffic happening, and can, and will, activately manupulate the speeds, thoroughput, etc depending on how conjestion things are. And yes, they can even pinpoint it on an individual level...though they rarely do that, tending to focus on what's happening on a more macro level.
I actually wasn't even aware of this until recently, but some guy who worked at Verizon who was also in school for that sort of thing let it slip when we started chatting for a second, to which he received a scathing look from the ***** manager, so that ended the conversation.
I was running DasBAMF 1.6.3 and I did return to stock without root this morning to try it out that way as well and I'm still seeing the same results.

Find someone else with a 4g device and have them download next to you at the same time. Only other option I can think of doing.
I'll try that.
Update:
I got with a few friends and tried a few different things. 3 people with Thunderbolts and 2 with Droid Charge. 2 in Seattle and 3 in Spokane. The Thunderbolts rooted and running DasBAMF 1.6.3 and the Charges fully stock. We tried the download using 3 methods for the TBolt's (wireless tether for root, mobile hotspot and USB tether) and the Charges used the mobile hotspot.
We all downloaded the same files. A 512mb video file, 400mb zipped picture file and a 300mb document file.
My Seattle friends who have had the "official" 4G LTE launch had no issues downloading at all... 1 TBolt and 1 Charge. Download went smoothly and never throttled down at all.
All 3 of us here in Spokane saw the same throttling going on. Could this be more an effect of LTE not being "officially" deployed in Spokane yet? It's not supposed to be officially launched till June 19th but we've been able to access it for several weeks now.

I would say that's a possibility. I get around 130 kbit/sec down, and LTE was officially launched here in december but only at our airport. I've been checking for nearly two weeks now and it's stayed the same. the upload is normal, was 3.5mbit/sec today.
This is all good to know. I'll be in Seattle next week for work. Can't wait to have 4G for a week
hey guys ive been really really trying really super hard to figure out why my android os is always at 80-90 percent cuz after 10 hours my battery is almost dead (in the red) so i got os monitor, cpu spy, and betterbatterystats to try to hunt the prob down and i have spent countless days since i got the phone to figure out what it is thats draining my battery so im on stock with codeworks kernal for cwm and rooted with superoneclick i froze a lot of apps and what not but still had the prob so i left my house one day to hit the beach and i said well i dont need wifi or gps so i turned it off for the 1st time and at the end of the day when i get home and pull out my phone from my bag it said it was on for 10 hours and i was only at 80 percent!!!! so i tested it some more and it seems that my android os is not high at all when wifi and gps are off plus i get awsome battery so my guess would be wifi drain i just want other ppl to try it also and see if that fixes there probs too idk just thought i would share my story sorry its so long but plz dont bash me if ive said noob stuff thx
Ya because when I'm right next to my router which is awesome I don't even get full signal so I think its the wifi.signal.

You should always turn off WiFi and Bluetooth when not connected to something. WiFi has been a thorn in my side too. I don't use it very often, and sometimes when I use it at home I forget to turn it off.
One of the things I miss most from my WinMo phone was the constant LED and notification indication WiFi is on. With Android and iOS if you are not connected you don't have any icon showing its on. There should be a WiFi with an X, like when you have no signal, to indicate: Hey you! Yeah, you ... you left WiFi on, you dope! Or, an option built into the OS that will let you turn it off automatically when disconnected for so long. I know there are apps to do this (juice defender is a popular one), but this such a core common sense thing that should be built in. At least with Bluetooth you see the logo staring at you when you leave it on.
Sorry to rant, that's been bugging me for 3 years.
GPS on the other hand only activates and uses battery when needed. However all sort of apps can call the need. Again, this warns you when its in use, so its not a surprise later.
I get much batter battery life than with my captivate, but I keep on top of WiFi and BT when not using them.

For wifi you can just set the policy to When screen turns off.
So far, not a single person has been able to actually find a wifi bug.
Every time someone thinks they've found it, things have been working as intended.
If you have an app that causes lots of network traffic, it'll inhibit deep sleep, but since most of the time spent handling the network traffic is in excessive suspending/resuming, Android OS gets the blame and not the responsible app.

Let me guess - you are running Skype or another IM application that does not use Google C2DM? (As far as I know, only Google Talk and Tango use C2DM)
I'm surprised that turning off wifi didn't make things worse, unless in your case the app responsible behaves differently when on a cellular network, or you have packet data disabled.
BetterBatteryStats is almost useless for hunting Android OS drain, as it does not show kernel wakelocks. The only way to get the truth is to get the contents of /proc/wakelocks
thank you entropy for that info but yes im stuck at the fact that even on mobile network it dont drain like it does with wifi which im not a pro or anything but im just assuming that it cant be an app cuz if it was i would think it would use the same amount of data whether it was wifi or mobile cuz internet is internet but for me i dont know about other ppl everytime i turn off wifi my battery dramatically increases by alot and my android os is never the highest anymore when its off so i dont know if this will do anything but i will do a factory reset and try my testing again like that and see what happens.... plz correct me if i say anything wrong im just trying to help but i only know so much im not a dev lol

I agree on Bluetooth. I disagree on wifi - Even for background data, wifi is FAR more efficient than cellular data in terms of power usage. There is no longer any reason to turn off wifi, unless you have a misbehaving app that consumes lare amounts of data when on wifi.
Unlike previous devices, the standby drain of the BCM4330 chipset in our phones is EXTREMELY low.
If Samsung's power_profile.xml numbers are correct, the wifi standby drain current of the BCM4330 on the Galaxy S2 is less than 1/10 that of the chipset used in the I9000/Captivate.
However, radio data is far less power efficient than it was on the I9000/Captivate - A change in the architecture of our phone's radio interface means that any radio data transfers, even for a single packet, incur a minimum 6 second wakelock penalty. (Compare to an average of 1 second for small wifi packets.) This doesn't even count the power penalties involved in transmitting to the tower vs. transmitting to a wifi access point.
In fact, when taking these two things together (high wakelock penalties for radio data, and wifi standby drain 1/10 that of previous devices), you should actually not only avoid turning off wifi, you should set the sleep policy to "never" so that it prefers wifi to the cell radio.

You are incorrect. Some apps specifically check whether they are on wifi or on cellular data and change their behavior accordingly. "Internet is Internet" is not true - cell data is fundamentally slower and more expensive in nearly all situations, and as a result, many apps behave differently on wifi.
For example, normally Google Talk will not allow video chat on cellular data, only on wifi, unless it has been hacked to change that behavior.
Some apps specifically have "use this feature only when on wifi" checkboxes, such as Amazon MP3.
I am 90% certain you have such an app somewhere driving data transfers.
Turn on wifi, reproduce the drain, and pull /proc/wakelocks as documented in the threads I linked above.
There has, to this day, not been a single documented case of the wifi chipset just randomly "wigging out" and keeping the device out of deep sleep - in EVERY single case, root cause was eventually traced back to network traffic, which could then be traced to an app. (For example, Skype in AndreLux's case.)
You might also want to install something like My Data Manager to see what is generating your network traffic.
When I first got my GS2, I was getting rapid battery drain and high heat. Turns out, I had put a SD card in that used to be in my old phone, and Google+ was uploading all the old pictures and videos that were on the card. My Data Manager showed me that this had used almost 800M of mobile data.
My data manager will show you what your usage is on mobile and on wifi, and which specific apps are using how much.

I gave the ADB commands necessary for pulling the wakelocks file in one of the threads I linked on the first page.
For getting ADB set up, if you're on Windows you may want to look for Droid Explorer (Google it) - it's a pretty nifty frontend to ADB and I believe it helps you install ADB.

On but not connected shouldn't be a problem for our devices - see my previous posts about the fact that our standby drain is supposedly VERY low.
On but transferring lots of background data when connected will go killtacular on your battery.
What are the major issues with CM7 on the Touchpad?
Well, its an alpha port, meaning not everything is gonna work.
First of all, its not stable, some apps WILL crash, wifi settings sometimes will fail to work, fluctuating your signal. Almost every popular app seems to work now, netflix, facebook, gmail, youtube works alright, the quality of the videos is not that good but bearable. Sometimes random SoD (sleep of death) occur putting your table into a semi perm sleep stage, and you have to press the power button and home button and hold them for 20 seconds or so.
Overall, its 6/10 of what it can be. don't expect 2.3 to work as good as your phone.
The main problems for me are:
Incompatible apps, either from the resolution and screen size, or not landscape optimized.
No VOIP integration.
Video does not play, either from youtube or flash, it shows lines and other static.

The wife and I have had virtually no major problems. The biggest one was not being able to connect to wifi outside of home but that seems to be fixed with a post I found here. Otherwise its small things, occasional app crashes, the odd app that wont run. Its no different than just about any custom rom on a phone (and I have seen many). Once in a blue moon ill get a random freeze/reboot. Never had the sod problem, Netflix, YouTube, flash videos all run like butter, I can stream anything I want, really, the TP has taken over as my main home device

Thanks for the replies. I bought my TP with the intention to install Android on it. Ive been waiting for a stable release, with ICS out it will probably be another 2 mths.
The main issue ive read about is the WiFi, which is pretty critical for what I use the TP for. Why do some people have the issue and others dont? Is there something that can be done to lessen the issue?

I turned off the setting that allows the wifi to turn off when the tablet goes to sleep. I also used the SOD fix just in case as well after I installed Alpha 2. That seems to do a good job keeping it connected.
Another thing I had to do was use my wireless G signal instead of my wireless N signal (I have dual band). On wireless N, I was getting a very weak signal but with wireless G the signal was very strong. Using WebOS, the wireless N was as strong as the G so I have to assume there is something weird with CM7 for this.
My only main issue is with wi-to. It's very sporatic and frustrating. Is anyone aware of a fix? Other than, just typical issues nothing critical. It's a surprisingly stable Alpha other than that. Facebook also doesn't work for me, but not a large issue.
My major issue is that I can't connect to my work's wifi with enterprise level encryption. I once got it to connect, but webpages would only load sometimes. On my home wifi, I have no issues connecting.
The other issues I've seen are that I woke up this morning, and my Touchpad was off instead of asleep. The battery wasn't dead or anything, and it turned back on fine. When I loaded Angry Birds, it crashed twice, but the third time it worked perfectly.

Every time I want to shutdown my TP in CM7 it gets restarted instead, and there was one time I got nut and forced shutdown it when it was booting and the system crashed. I had to uninstall and install everything which wasted my whole night in that day.....

I've run many custom ROMs on my Incredible and on my Eris, without app issues like this. The eris has a lot of apps that don't run well, but I can assure you this is not a custom ROM issue. I have yet to see an app that won't run on my incredible with custom ROMS.
BTW the wifi seems to work better for me at least with alpha 3. Before flashing alpha 3 my wifi was completely non-working, it would crash when I went into wifi settings.
I need my youtube and its not working properly on alpha 2 or 3. Once thats fixed I'm good on cm7.
But I"m still waiting for some one to do honeycombo or ICS
Just thought I'd share an issue that has followed me from 3.5 roms on the Dinc to 3.5/6 roms on the Rezound including both ics and gb roms. That issue is- Streaming music/radio apps when on wifi leads to drops/buffers/resumes, etc. I had hoped this was a hardware limitation of the Inc that couldn't quite keep up with the beefiness of sense 3.5-- but now it's confirmed- the same dang thing happens on 3.5/6 even with this sweet hardware. Now- there are workarounds. The stream will not drop in and out if:
A. Phone is charging
B. Enable "Best Wi-Fi Performance" under advanced wifi settings.. Problem with this is it's not a setting you want to leave on all the time cause it's a real battery killer
C. Just ditch wifi all together and use 3g/4g for your streaming- not a prob if you're on unl data
Hope this can help anyone out who's been frustrated by streaming drops on wifi. I really believe this to be a htc software issue- now that it has followed me to a different phone.

download wifi stay alive from the market and set it to always leave wifi on. That usually helps me. Wifi by default likes to turn off after the screen has been off a while (usually 15min), then it goes back over to data.
Interesting- I'll give it a shot. I see wifi keep alive in the market- is that what you meant?

yeah that one. I run it anytime my phone starts dropping streaming with the screen off and set it to always on even if it already says it. Seems to help.
Well- it was worth a shot.. D/l'd - set to always on- and within 5 minutes of starting back my radio station with tune-in-radio pro- it was dropping again. Thx for the suggestion though.
Hey guys, lately my wi-fi connection has been very slippery, as if it drops and then reconnects often, although it remains physically connected to my router. I don't know if it could be my router since every other device in my home is connecting to it fine. My phone is able to connect well to networks outside of my home, though, so I am unsure. Do you guys think it's the routers fault or maybe a kernel issue of some sort (I'm running stock kernel)? I've been having this issue on Tranquility and Viper ROM (maybe also on Mean) so it can't be A ROM issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
sounds like u have a gaf phone man.. if every other phone in ya house connects fine.. its not the stock kernel.. also the update we just had the OTA was supposed to fix wifi issues.. so u mite have something up with your phone.. alot of people had wifi issues that why they had a fix in the for it in the OTA we just got... my phone did the same ishh before the OTA now its fine..
I drop 3G like It's cool but that's sprints problem, never had that issue on WiFi. This phone has very powerful radios.

Check your wifi settings and make sure that your wifi connection is set to never sleep. Also Check your wifi frequency band in "wifi advance settings" and make sure its set to 2.4 only. That might help.

I doubt my phone is bad since it can connect find everywhere else. I'll try those tips, thanks

In wifi settings change the frequency from auto to 2.4 ghz. It fixed my wifi issues.

There's an app in the Market called WiFi analyzer. U can use it to see what other wireless networks are operating in your area. It will also reccomend the best channel for your router to be on.
Sometimes there is a lot of interference on your channel and switching it will help or has helped quite a few people with your problem that I know of.
I had a problem at work with a linksys router not issuing an ip address to my phone consistently. What I did is take a screenshot of my ip address, subnet mask, DNS address defaults, etc. when u could connect. Then I made myself a static ip using that info. A good app that basically let's u run ipconfig and other network troubleshooting applications is an app called Fing.
I've worked on this issue far and wide. If the new ota didn't help and u still get random disconnects thru WiFi then u need to exchange your phone. It is actually a problem with the radio. My first EVO LTE did it and I could fix WiFi disconnects temporarily, but not permanently. This, my 3rd EVO LTE works great with no ota installed.
Good luck. Hope I was of some help. Pm me if u need more help.

For me, I was on a different channel than my neighbors with no other wireless device ever had a problem in the 12 years I've been there.
What I do, Go into wifi advanced and click on the high-performance setting.
Only use it when needed as it burns battery.
Post back if it fixes the drop issue for you. Fixed it for me.
.,
Last night I flashed the awesome kernel and set the frequency to 2.4 seemed to go away. Today I flashed tranquility rls 1.a and I'm running it as is and having the issue again . I'll try out your suggestion throughout today and tomorrow, thanks for the tips guys!

I've been hearing about people talking about the wifi issues since day one, but never actually run into them. The past few days though I've been trying to stream and download things (exporting through dropbox) over wifi, and OMG, what the hell is this? Every 2 or three minutes the connection just stops - the wifi bars at the top still show the wifi connected, but the the stream or download just stops. Sometimes it starts up again, sometimes I have to disconnect from the wifi and reconnect. And the whole time the wifi indicator doesn't indicate any loss of signal - once in a blue moon though you'll see it disconnect then reconnect. I don't want to hit that high-performance setting (although it seemed to help the in the limited time I used it), because it uses more battery. I thought the update was supposed to resolve these issues. I know I never had these issues before the update. None of the tricks mentioned in this thread seemed to help. Just wanted to report the issue in case some other people are having it also, and hoping an update will come out in the near future to resolve it. On Viper4G, btw. If have time at some point, I'll try to flash another rom to see if I get the same issue.

It's kind of strange, mine has been dropping but the actual indicator in the status bar goes off when it does.I've seen it connect and disconnect 10-12 times per minute.I'm also running latest firmware/radios on the latest version of ViperRom.I'm also running Enoch's Kernel but not sure if I had the problem before the kernel flash or not.
im having the same issue. ive only really started noticing it because i was running chameleon pretty much since i got the phone and this never seemed to be an issue. now im on viper4g and my wifi will drop sporadically. it drops, i see the 3g icon for about half a second, and the the wifi reconnects. sometimes itll do it just once, sometimes itll do it continuously... the longest ive let it go before interfering is about 30 seconds. but my battery usage screen tells me that it goes on for way longer than that if left alone.
anyway, im on the lastest firmware, and i have the channel set to 2.4 (5 seems to knock everything in my apt, including my phone, off the router). i use the best wifi performance option sometimes, but as has been mentioned, it drains the battery. the phone wont sleep with that option checked. also, it seems to happen more frequently when im on the opposite side of my apt from the router.
ive read stuff about using a screwdriver to pull the antenna pins up a little, but that scares me. i dont really think that has anything to do with it anyway as ive tried that test where you squeeze the phone to see if your signal changes. it doesnt.
really, im kinda at a loss here. im thinking that i might try to exchange the phone if i cant get this figured out soon, but i dont want to do that if its something with my router or if the replacement is going to do the same thing.
I am using Viper 4G and have been having issues with my wifi connection dropping but more recently my phone has been restarting only while connected to Wifi. I haven't tried changing the wifi Frequency band to only 2.4GHz , but I will once I get home after work. I hope it works because its getting kinda annoying to have my phone restart so much while its just sitting idle.
I believe the rapid connect/disconnect issue some of us are having is also related to the phone not playing nice with particular routers. HTC referenced that fact when the 1.22 OTA came out. The changelog said the issue was fixed on how the phone communicated with certain routers and the disconnects should be eliminated. I can attest that the new update has made it a little better, but still not 100%.
The router at my work has been perfect, I've never disconnected from it once.
The router at my house is a whole different story. I have given up on downloading a ROM with my phone, directly to my phone. I will start the DL, sit the phone down and go do something, only to come back and find "download unsuccessful" every single time. I know it is because it is disconnecting. I can sit there and watch it happen.
The router at my friend's house is fine. Connect once, and never worry again the rest of the night. Obviously I need a new router. More obviously, HTC's software needs fixing. I shouldn't have to buy a new router just so one of my devices can stay connected to it.
Interesting seeing all these reports of dropped connnections with Viper4G. I've been running it for a few weeks and have never had a connection drop while it was in use on either the 2.4ghz or 5ghz bands of my d-link router. This thread over here suggests that replacing your Sense Settings.apk with an AOSP Settings.apk solves the problem for some people. I can't verify since I wasn't experiencing disconnects, but the AOSP menus are cool anyway

My issues (detailed above) have apparently resolved themselves. I haven't lost connection once today, and I was streaming and downloading all day.
I don't see how this actually did anything but here's what I did. I decided to try another kernel instead of the stock one that comes in the viper rom. I knew the wifi fixes that HTC supposedly made were in the new kernel, and I knew I wasn't having any issues until I updated, so I thought I'd give a custom kernel (based off the old base) a shot, and play around with some new governors and overclocking while I'm at it. I did a nand backup and flashed awesome sauce. Wifi issues were gone, but I didn't like the kernel, stock seemed smoother. So i restored my backup, and for whatever reason, my wifi issues remained gone. Like I said, I can't explain it, but there you go.
Nice to know I'm not alone with this. My Wifi drops every so often, particularly at night time or with downloads. Hopefully HTC figured out a way to sort this out 100%.

If you have a wireless router like myself that operates at two distinct bands, go into your Wi-Fi settings and choose the band that is at the higher range, and setting best performance is also a good idea, although this might result in greater battery drain. HTH!
