Hi,
This is what I have now got, please bear with me, I am not an expert and can at the most modify the layout of the keyboard. Suggestions are always welcome, I am learning JavaScript, XML and SVG. Then I will make a web page where you can learn how to make your own keyboard, also my Java is not spectacular so I will keep adding new stuff as and when I learn it
Changes made
1. Added a ? when SHIFT is pressed in place of 0 key. Thanks jeffrey2000 for pointing this out.
2. Added the 3rd view with smileys and top level domains used while browsing the internet.
3. Added the arrow keys, finally got the thing working
4. Keyboard works normally in Portrait mode. Thanks to steflucrene for the tip.
5. Alternate symbols are available in a pop up on long press, also added Scandinavian letters.
6. Added a new version which looks prettier and also fixed the portrait number bug. Thanks to JOBooth for catching this.
Things to do
1. Make a specific version for the Archos Tablet.
2. Restore the smiley view in landscape and also add same theme in portrait mode.
Till then enjoy. The portrait mode is now functioning normally.

I wanted to add one thing, when you press Shift then you can see the Screen shot shown below and on that if you press ABC then you actually see the same symbols but if you want to change the symbols you can tell me and I will include them, what this basically means is that we can have 3 views. I am currently using only 2 and if someone wants some extra keys we have one whole view
Just added 3rd view
With Shift key pressed
Capitals now look like this
Portrait Mode

Looks great here. Downloads as .txt file, not .apk. I'm using Thumb keyboard but would like to give this a try! Thanks!
I get a FC on every change I make to its settings. When I chose Streak Keyboard 1.6 on the input choice it will not take. It stays with Android keyboard. It is checked under Keyboard & Languages.

Version 6 of keyboard, streakdroid 1.8.1, and dpi I don't know unless it has to do with the density of 160.
keys are swapped and enter does not work
I like the layout of the keyboard, but the ~ and ' keys are revered in the newest version. I also only see a box similar to this [] when the enter key is hit.
Thanks for the effort and I think you just have a few more bugs to work out and this will be a great keyboard!
I've been using SwiftKey keyboard on mine and I'm happy with it. I wish it had arrow keys, but it's fast and has a clean ui. It's available in the market with a 31 day free trial.

Well whatever problem I was having with the 1.6 keyboard posted here went away when I upgraded to DJ Steve's 1.9. It is great having the 1.6 layout back.
my keyboard
i use the BETTER KEYBOARD 7.this is a great keyboard as you can adjust the height of the keyboard(make the letters bigger). this is good if you have big fingers as it helps to increase your accuracy. i uninsatlled swype in the 02 UK official 2.2 update and installed this as the default keyboard. it also doesn't freeze on me. hope this helps
I see a few mentions of other keyboards, but will any of those do the stock 1.6 layout with the number pad on the side? This is what I am after. I do not thumb type and have no interest in split keyboards.

Far has I know it is still in beta over there in China.... but I can not read chinese....
Here are some pictures!
I really like this keyboard it has always been one of my favorites ever sense the first beta last year. now they have made lots of changes and it is even better.
When you install it it will be in chinese. you will need to go to settings and switch it to english.
Looks nice. Downloading now.
EDIT: Just tried it out for a while. Verdict: It's great!
Once you turn off the Chinese language, the text prediction is great, and the buttons are quick and responsive. I like the option to have different layouts for portrait vs. landscape (even though I just use QWERTY for both). The edit button is top center, and very handy, since I came from a G1 and the Vibrant has no trackball/d-pad to edit words. One note though, the delete button in Edit deletes the next character, not the previous. Not a huge deal, since the backspace on the keyboard still deletes the previous character and you could just select what you need to delete in the Edit screen, just a weird change. If you don't know what I mean, try it out yourself, it's worth a try at least
I love that style of keyboard with the two letters per key (Like on my original Blackberry Pearl).
@Phromik
Yeah it is a great little keyboard. my favorite feature is being able to swipe to change from T9 to QWERTY

I am new to the Android side of XDA just picked up my Vibrant 2 days ago and loving it.............
My favorite too......one of the first things I downloaded to my Vibrant and seems to work pretty well just missing the ability to save passwords or url or email adresses (one click entry in the username or password box for websites is really slick and I miss that the most). It is still beta so we will see if they implement it later on.

Um, why does the app need access to Contacts and Voice Recorder?
I ask, because we (in the I.T. dept) are being bombarded by Chinese malware and such.
The permissions do seem a bit excessive for a keyboard.
Requires these permissions:
Your personal information
read contact data
Network communication
full Internet access, view network state, view Wi-Fi state
Hardware controls
control vibrator, record a
Didn't see this anywhere on the streak forum so here's a link. This is the awesome droidx multitouch keyboard (my favourite by miles) and a certain zach.xtr has changed the colours to dark with green highlight. Recomend for anyone still hunting for a replacement for the useless Dell keyboard on 2.1

It actually works
I installed the white one, it does vibrate on keypress, but so little its hardly noticeable. It seems like thats a bug on the streak. Does the vibration on this one work better?
Can you just install this or do you have to do something special?
I ask, because on my streak it wouldn´t install. Might be because it´s not rooted yet or because I have the white one installed.
best keyboard by far
Please could someone post clear instructions how to install this onto the Streak.
I've renamed the package "LatinIME.apk" and copied it across to the SD card via USB but I don't understand what to do next.

Should be standard little mic next to space bar, it doesnt always appear only in normal text input areas. If you don't have it check that its installed or possibly reinstall the keyboard?
I personally like some feedback, but very subtle. Would be cool if someone managed to add the level of haptic feedback as an option in the settings.
HOLEE CRAP this keyboard is amazing... Thanks for sharing!
I'm wondering if anyone has tried porting the stock 1.6 keyboard.
I love the numpad and would hate to have to change to different keyboard as I'm used to using it now.

For all who might be interested to try... Following the instructions in this article will help you to install Gingerbread keyboard:
http://www.droid-life.com/2010/12/06/download-gingerbread-keyboard-for-rooted-devices/
Cheers
Confirm, it's working. It is better though to have the language set for English...if one would choose another language, it may have some missing characters. For example, I had also Romanian selected. When I switch to it, the first row displays only some of the numbers (the ones that are typed when you long press on the key). 1,2,4, 5 and 9 are shown (if I remember exactly) the rest of them being inaccessible. If you switch to English, everything looks just fine.
Keyboard seems (and looks) better than the standard Froyo keyboard (and this is how it's advertised too), has some new functionality, but I still prefer Better Keyboard. For those using English layout and don't have Better Keyboard installed, this Gingerbread ported keyboard will be a better option than the standard one (and best thing...it's free)
it works but that's about it.
The dictionary doesn't know some of the basic words even though it supports dutch. :s
And I don't think its made for hdpi, it looks pretty small.

Also, my phone has the same resolution as the legend (480x800) and the keyboard seems to be sized correctly.
Anyone else with this FC issue?
The Legend is 480*320, not 800*480.
When I tried, the installation failed because it couldn't verify the zip file.

I got it to work by downloading the keyboard zip made by fabulous. Google it. If you have a problem with the keys being to small, you need to download the LCD Density app, set it to 240 and restart, then set it back to the default of 160 and restart.
They keyboard should be fine after that. I've been using it for a while and prefer it to Swype, HTC, and Android 2.2.
One last note. Restarting the phone may cause the keyboard to revert to a small state so be prepared to do the LCD fix again.

Guys, I wanted desperately to ask someone to port the keyboard from standard stock rom SE 2.1 for froyo 2.21. So far I have not found a good keyboard like that. Please do this for me.
I have alreadya lot of keyboards ....... but no has a facility that think it's essential to me, to position the cursor on the words at the touch Swype right and left in a bar above the keys.
Look:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
To make matters worse my situation, the button on the keyboard cursor not appears when I click in the text box to enter. It is a struggle to position the cursor when editing text.
I realized that the roms based MiniCM do not have the cursor button when we click the in the box text.
This is terrible because it makes it very difficult typing and correction of the text!
I liked this rom and do not have that cursor button.
Sad, 'cause when I like the rom, for exemple this ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036335 ) do not have that button.
So I wanted the keyboard's original SE. Even without the cursor button to place it in the text where you want to just doing Swype to right and left in a box that appears on top of the keyboard keys.
The only way to fix this is by placing the cursor button or by installing the standard keyboard of the original SE 2.1 rom.
Please, someone helpe me.
I'd like to stay with Stable 2.2.1 ROM for X8 | Based on miniCM | 19/5/2011 Update, but the bug of the keyboard is annoying too much.
hide keyboard is on a lot keyboard
HTC IME, Gingerbread Stock Keyboard, Swype have "Hide Keyboard" when you push "back" button
Ask somebody who´s still on 2.1 to upload it or go back to 2.1 and copy it yourself.

You can use "Chinese Keyboard" from SE 2.1. There's no the text preview. But at least you can move around the text cursor. Haha.. :-D
cursor have HTC Ime and Gingerbread stock in FroyoBread
If you have a backup of your SE 2.1, you can extract your backed up /data partition on your PC and copy the keyboard to sdcard, then install it.
I´ve attached the program you´ll need for this.
You can find the instructions how to use here
Keyboard will fc if you just copy it, I asume that needs some changes in the framework or something

I can't access keyboard debug menu on my tablet so I figured I would try ICS keyboard and well...that didnt go well so I thought...why not the gingerbread keyboard? And poof! It works perfectly minus voiceinput*because I cant get into debug menu* so, time for instructions?
First, you need to put the APK on your SDcard:
Download link: here
Next you need to push to your SDcard either through adb or just using USB mass storage.
Afterwards copy to system/app/ using a file manager *ES file manager or Root explorer is recommended. Root Explorer for those of you who use paid apps or ES for those of you who want a free alternative. I used Root explorer.
Here is the VERY important part, mod the permissions to the following:
Code:
Read, Write
Read
Read
Finally, just reboot and you will have it.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Code:
You can redownload the stock APK from [URL="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15069134/LatinIMEbackup.apk"]here[/URL]
and follow the rest of the guide starting after you download. It's the same universally. Also note that not all keyboard apps work well in system which is why I did it with the stock gingerbread app. Ice cream sandwich keyboards aren't too /system friendly.
it works well. I hope we can get the ICS keyboard up and running. Their is just a small visual issue with background behind the keys being white not black like in your screen shots.
I'd be happy if I could get Swiftkey Tablet up and running, but I'll give this a shot. I found the menu where you can change the colors of the default keyboard, but some other ones have added functionality that I'd like to have.
