[Q]Hulu Region Bypass - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Apparently Hulu would come out with an app. Can a hack be developed so that people outside of US can view stuff on the app, somewhat on the lines of Market Enabler?

that would be really cool!

i assume hulu simply checks your IP address server side? if that's the case you're SOL. unless you find a good proxy maybe? a very good one

i know orbot works for pandora, i figure it could be the same deal with hulu? i might try it out

[Q] HTTP Proxy under $churli root

What would it take to get this done? Could IP tables be set up so that the built in settings or one of the apps would work? I think a lot of people would love to have this capability, including me.
You could check out Proxoid. http://code.google.com/p/proxoid/wiki/installationPhone
I've never used it. It is supposed to let you use your phone for wirer proxy connections.

Thanks, but what I'm looking for is a way to use the tablet's browser over wifi through a proxy server. There are lots of apps and even browsers that claim to provide the capability, but our tablets seem to be missing the prerequisite IP tables. My employer's intranet is isolated from the internet with a firewall, and the only way through it is by way of a proxy server.
the UrukDroid mod does support iptables. so the apps like transproxy should work.

Thanks. I'll have to read up on that a bit. Not sure how much trouble it would be. I'm hoping for a relatively easy solution.
well the mod developers want to include proxy settings in the next releases. guess that is the simplest solution we might get.
i don't expect to get a working proxy solution in the original software anytime soon.
the only hope would be a honeycomb release which is highly unlikely, as android 2.3 doesn't have native proxy support.
Could it be as simple as this?

Hi pal,
Sorry but I know nothing about Hotspot Shield neither would I trust anyone to secure my data on my behalf when I can do it myself, especially if american!
Maybe this could help you, not only Androidwise: you could use it for all your web activities (BTW what's your country?)
You can use "SSH Tunnel Beta" from the market.
As you cannot access it I am posting the apk.
Or you could search SSHTunnel(BETA) v1.6.0beta.apk on google and you might find it.
Works like a charm, I use it to encrypt and to change my IP, whatismyip.org correctly reports the IP of the ssh server.
You need an ssh server to act as a proxy obviously.
(alternative is an proxy but firemole is not available on android)
All you need is a linux box in a datacenter.
Provider gives you root and password that you should change to something super secure, adduser name, disable root logins (/etc/ssh/sshd_config) and a few more things to be secure or if you like to risk.. just use the provided rootassword on your ssh tunnel app
I hire from www.leaseweb.com which is in NL or DE, you can get a VPS linux from many providers and they cost under 10 euro / month or get superb dedicated servers like I do if you have a use for them . Bandwidth is great but depends from the network in you country and also on the backbones used but you hardly care about this others are www.lowendbox.com and www.vps4you.it that offer 30 day trial
Hope this helps and doesn't just confuse you... But if you live in a country where things are banned I guess this would upgrade your web freedom
Now lets get back to work
G
PS you could also use it on your wireless router (get a www.dd-wrt.com / opnwrt / pfsense capable router) and you're done house/firm-wide
Thanks alot for the info mate
I'll see what I can do and report back..
Really appreciate your help
PS. btw am from Sudan..

Any Hack For Region Protected Apps?

To make a long story brief, does anyone know of a hack that would fool a region protected app?
I downloaded the APK for the BBC I Player from mediafire and I opened it via Astro whilst connected to my UK proxy and also used a location spoofer app. When I tried to play content a message pops up saying it's only available in the UK. I then tried using my VPN account and got the same result.
Does anyone know of any way to make that app think i'm in the UK or is it impossible?
I did search XDA and as far as I can see is still an unresolved issue.
try market enabler from the market.

That won't have any effect. He already has the app but it's restricted to working only for those within the UK.
OP, try tvcatchup using your Flash enable browser.

Firstly, thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
Although it was a great idea (and one I hadn't thought of) it didn't work because it gave a message saying my i.p. was not compatible with the service. I suspect that's because I'm probably number 10,000 to sign up and use that i.p. and it was therefore blocked long ago. It did play the ads so in theory you're right, it would definitely have worked, so for anyone else reading this who has access to a 'clean' proxy, try it.
It wasn't a massive issue for me because I can get I Player via my browser using the proxy but it is a bit of a pain navigating it, as opposed to the clean interface of the player itself but it's better than nothing.
Also to anyone else reading this, I do get ITV Player and 4 On Demand via my proxy and I can get all the sport on 5Live, Sports Extra and Talksport, so it's only the stand alone players themselves that can't be broken.
Thanks again for the help and whilst i'm here, do you know of any other UK tv catchup services besides the one you gave me?
* UPDATE *
whatsontv.co.uk works like a charm through the proxy, the only downside being there's no live feeds but it is worth having.
Also, Blinkbox works with a proxy. Plenty of good free series but no live feeds.
123webtvdotcom is also a good service that works with a proxy and it simply gives you a grid of live tv programs that it then forwards you too.
All in all, three good finds thanks to the posters suggestion, so thanks.

[Q] Working with VPNs

I bought a subscription to PIA last night. Seemed like a reputable provider, highly recommended. I'm not really trying to hide anything that needs to be hidden, per se, just like my privacy. I know how to set up a VPN on a computer, Win/Linux, and PIA even has an app for Android that I'm using, but I've still a question or two for those knowledgeable on the subject...
By activating the VPN, is everything secure? As in, everything that users DATA (apps, Facebook, email?) Or just browsers? I don't even see the option, but does each browser have to be configured with the VPN? I mainly use Firefox Aurora. Are there any NONOs that would cause data/dns leaks (like, say, with TOR and pdf/flash?)
I also have a few questions about TOR on Android if anyone has knowledge with that. Like I said, I mainly just Facebook and Google searches, crack flashing, and mod the phone itself. However, with all this NSA/PRISM crap talk, I figured it was just time to protect my data from mining... Because it's mine.
I realize to truly keep some sense anonymity to not login to FB, Email and the like, before anyone starts in on that, but refer to the top about not hiding anything worth really being hidden I searched for a board on VPNs and security, but didn't come across one. SO, if I should have this moved, no problem.

I believe that all your traffic is redirected by the VPN, but I'm not sure. Traceroute your traffic to check, but that doesn't mean that certain apps aren't rerouted through the VPN. I would look deeper into Android VPN before assuming that all traffic is redirected. It is a good question.
Yeah I was hoping the app would have a root mode (it doesn't), like TOR proxies all apps, but TOR is slow. Will do that though, good idea.

Don't forget to check VPNRoot app. It allows you to connect without any security lock on the device.

Anyone using CumulusTV?

Looks promising, but Live Channels sees it as not set up after is parses the channels. Wondering if anyone has this app working?
Its exactly what i have been seeking the past few days, but its unfortunately too buggy for me right now
it keeps popping up with JSON errors, cant sync properly or parse the JSON with google drive and when i try import the channels into the live chanels app, it shows them being added but then still says cumulus TV is not set up.
After leaving a review on the play store i got this response promptly after
Hi, I am aware that there are occasionally stability issues. I do read crash reports and fix the ones I can. Additionally, I'm in the midst of a massive overhaul. If you have any specific issues you'd like me to fix, feel free to send me an email. ([email protected])

Sounds exactly like what I"m getting. I was able to copy a JSON file I found online and can get the streams to play in the cumulus TV app, but live channels is doing what yours is...showing not set up. I emailed him from his Github page and he responded almost instantly and said he was pushing an update to see if he could fix it and to try in the morning. Tried again this morning after it received an update and still doing the same thing. Haven't heard back yet from him.
I havent had any more json errors and the app feels more stable since that update, however it still wont integrate into the live channel app
EDIT: its been said that integration to live channels will be fixed in the next update, until then the last working version was v1.4.6, i sideloaded that and it worked fine
grab the 1.4.6 apk HERE
Also didnt know that you can set websites as channels from 1.4.7 onwards, really cool!
Where can I find some us json files?

serpent, are you using this to watch the free to air channels via IP? could you share your config, please?
The thing looks really good, however where can I find such channels to add? I mean, m3u8. Is there a directory around? (And please don't tell me to google it...)
I'm watching a few local stations (Australia) that offer a live stream from their website, no station will offer a direct link to their stream so you need to do a bit of digging in the websites source code or just grab a program such as a m3u8 or rtmp sniffer to get the link
Cant say at all if its legal or not, but the channels im using are free to air in my country, so unless im taking advertising revenue away from them by not viewing it in their website, i dont see a problem.
long story short, this program gives you the ability but you need to put in the legwork to find the streams

I second that post. Without some "sources" listed somewhere, the app isn't pretty much useful (for us lazy people - or, inept people) lol
Well I've just searched Google for the past few days looking for some US json files, to no avail. No one wants to lend a hand?
There is a good chance that you will not find any JSON files for cumulusTV on the internet.
The JSON is generated from CumulusTV and most likely has its own formatting.
Your best bet is to add a 2 or 3 of the supplied sources (nasaTV etc) to generate your initial JSON file, then open it from google drive to see just how its formatted.
In general though you need to go on the hunt for your stream url's to add
A great website to find streams is www.squidtv.net
Generally you wont find many entertaining streams, most are news based like bloombergTV,Al Jazeera, ArirangTV etc
but some can have some good documentaries like NHK World
Countries that offer their main channels online like UK's BBC/ITV are usually geoblocked and require a VPN to view.
To add them to CumulusTV is an entirely seperate matter, you need dig through the source code to find the stream link (typically a .m3u8 file) or use a stream url sniffer which are freely available on the internet.

Thank you for the "head start". That seems like an awful lot of digging and work for not much return. In my head, I was thinking that I'd be able to get all the regular USA channels the "foreign" ones aren't really of use or, interest.
